row creation or update date??

2001-11-22 Thread Denham Eva
Title: row creation or update date??

Hi

This may be an easy question or mentioned before, apologize if so,
But is there some way of finding a row in a table's creation/update date, without there being a date column specific for that purpose. Something like rowid?

TIA
Denham

Ed:
If you choose to upgrade your database from 8.0.5 to 8.1.6, there's a
potential difficulty you need to know about.

If you're not aware of the dictionary corruption problem, be sure you read
the metalink alert (96117.1). This has something to do with block checking
enabled in 8.1.6 Essentially, you need to analyze all your system tables
to insure no corruption has been introduced.

If you have any problem finding the info on metalink, take a look at the Tim
Gorman's web site (www.evdbt.com). He has some info about it under
"downloads".

This is of course a little less trouble if the developers
are a little less ( *ahem* ), sloppy when developing.

Lack of case sensitivity is not a good excuse for bad practice.

Re: OORDBMS?

2001-11-22 Thread Connor McDonald

I use them for transient collections , for example,
the "table" and "cast" operators to pass 'chunks' of
rows about in PL/SQL. Thus this is really just
creating various types in the dictionary and
referencing these in PL/SQL routines.

I'm not really a fan of using object-segments (for
lack of a better terms), ie physical tables of objects
et al, since if you dig under the covers, Oracle is
just implementing the whole lot as relational tables
anyway - in which case, I'd rather have the control.

Is CKPT process is Mandatory in 8i

2001-11-22 Thread Muthaiah

Hi List,

Today we had a big argument at our work place whether CKPT is
Mandatory/Optional process in 8i. My contention is that it is an optional
process. I am sure it was optional in 7.3 and later became mandatory in 8.

Gurus, can you please clarify whether CKPT is a Mandatory or Optional
process in 8i.

TIA,

Muths

2. Extract the cpio archives with the command "cpio -idmv < "

Re: 9iAS

It is a challenge to make Forms60 & Reports60 work on *nix
due to the fact of file name case sensitivity; since these tools
were built on Windows which is a case insensitive OS.

Yes, it's called dynamic SQL. EXECUTE IMMEDIATE is fine if it's DDL or
hard-coded INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE. SELECTs are more or less complicated,
depending on whether you already know the number and types of the items
in the select list. The less you know about the statement, the more
complicated it becomes. Check the demo programs.

> 2- How can I move a cursor to first record?

Although OCI functions are beginning to have parameters pointing into
the direction of scrolling back cursors (but so far only one direction
is allowed, forwards), this is inherently unnatural to Oracle. Close the
cursor and reopen it.

Re: Odd Listener.ora Stanza

Hi ,
The settings in the listener.ora point to

"EJB specifies Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) as the transport
protocol. Oracle8i JServer implements RMI over IIOP. Because the CORBA
Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) is the transport protocol for CORBA and
for a future version of RMI, Oracle8i effectively enables direct
object-oriented access to an array of open systems.
"

So for Oracle 8i Jserver connections (PRESENTATION = GIOP) is specified.

Re: Fwd: A problem

2001-11-22 Thread Dias Costa

Hi !

May be this will help you (I hope).
This solution is for Windows (X) but
with some work it will do also in UNIX.

A procedure called BackupOSC is created by
the DBA in his schema.
A job is created with at command, invoking
the batch command file backup_OSC.cmd wich
in turn calls SQLPLUSW to run the above procedure.
The outcome is a batch command file called exp_OSC.cmd
wich is invoked by the firts batch file to perform the
real export.

The "secret" is to use the SQL to create the second file
since DOS hasn't the ability to handle strings.

The example files are within an attached zip file.
The file exp_Ora.ftp is a parameter file for to FTP
the DMP files to other machine.
If you find some strange words in the files, they are
Portuguese.

Hope it helps.
Dias Costa

P.S.: My apologies for I have sent the files unziped.

Or do I have to use that db assistant and do an Upgrade Database objects.

by PL/SQL are automatically closed at each COMMIT. A value of
FALSE signifies that cursors opened by PL/SQL are held open so that
subsequent executions need not open a new cursor. If PL/SQL cursors
are reused frequently, setting the parameter to FALSE can cause
subsequent executions to be faster.
A value of TRUE causes open cursors to be closed at each COMMIT or
ROLLBACK. The cursor can then be reopened as needed. If cursors are
rarely reused, setting the parameter to TRUE frees memory used by the
cursor when the cursor is no longer in use.

Hello Guru's

I hope someone can shed light on this problem, more a nuisance really.
The below Alter Session statement has been appearing in the *alrt.log file.

ALTER SESSION SET close_cached_open_cursors specifies an obsolete parameter
ALTER SESSION SET close_cached_open_cursors specifies an obsolete parameter
ALTER SESSION SET close_cached_open_cursors specifies an obsolete parameter
ALTER SESSION SET close_cached_open_cursors specifies an obsolete parameter
ALTER SESSION SET close_cached_open_cursors specifies an obsolete parameter

The system is a Compaq 8500R system, Win2K and Oracle 817.
Does anyone have an idea of what this is as everyone I have approached here
at my work claims not to be using it, I suspect a third party product.

Absolutely any info will be appreciated.

TIA
Denham
