RE: DECODE AND SELECT

2003-07-11 Thread Kevin Lange
 One thing you could consider is to make functions out of each of the sql
statements in the case. Then, in your decode statement you could call the
correct function based on the value of X. Either that or put the entire
logic into a function that has all the case statement broken down into
individual IF tests .

Re: DECODE AND SELECT

2003-07-11 Thread Mladen Gogala
You are lucky! My sinuses are getting better. Decode is
a function which is to be called within a SQL statement,
not the other way round. What do you translate a "CASE"
statement into? That's elementary, my dear Hrishy: a sequence
of "if ... then ... else ... end if" commands.

RE: Sparky auth file

2003-07-11 Thread Cary Millsap
Barb,

Hi, I wrote Sparky, but it's been so long that it's going to take me a
little time to catch up with my own code. We have some users running fine on
OpenVMS, so there's certainly hope :).

Would you mind privately sending me your whole trcfiled.log file? We can
take it offline from here until we figure out the answer, and then one of us
can post the list.

Ok, this is a REAL reach.
But does anyone out there know how to specify the dump
directory in the auth file for sparky

on an OpenVMS system?

OpenVMS 7.2-1
Oracle 8.1.7.4
Perl 5.6.1

The background dump desitnation from v$parameter is
ORA_DUMP. The system logical ORA_DUMP equates to
disk$dbtest11:[db_amdev.trace].
Sparky wants to append the trace name file to the end
of this. I've tried both ORA_DUMP: and
disk$dbtest11:[db_amdev.trace] in the aut file. They
don't work.

if I use diskname:

Authorized directory 'disk$dbtest11:[DB_AMDEV.TRACE]':

1 not authorized to
read 'ORA_DUMP' (trcfiled.pl v3.04 line 536)

if I use ORA_DUMP

Fri Jul 11 16:18:34 2003 WSVR

(no such file or directory)

I get the error message "trace file server daemon has

'DRAX11' (ip) at port 2297 for details.

I'd be most grateful for any ideas.

Thanks!!

I think the backend is probably just /dev/null. It's much faster than
Oracle, and requires a lot less space to store those 10,000,000 phone

No, you don't lock a row when you select it.

There's no need for a read lock of a row in Oracle to maintain consistency.
If Oracle can't produce a consistent row, it throws an ORA-1555.

Well, what I actually thought you meant from your

match the auth file.

Something I hadn't thought of until I read your

So you might have stumbled upon the answer after all.

Anyhow, I'm going to give it a shot!

Re: RAC system Calls

2003-07-11 Thread Mladen Gogala
I've seen a problem with CLIC interface, which are, for some
reason, not used by oracle. It is a bug (Oxford is on HP-UX)
and there is a specific one-off patch. This was OPS, not RAC.
The symptoms are very similar: one of the processes was spinning
like crazy in the kernel mode. However, RAC != OPS and I don't have
any experience with RAC.

RE: RAC system Calls

2003-07-11 Thread Ravi Kulkarni
I have tested using cluster_interconnects parameter.
Oradebug IPC dump shows it chooses first IP correctly,
recognizes the 2nd interconnect, but with a wrong IP -
0.0.0.0. Looks like a bug.. Has anyone seen this
earlier?
(I understand there is a bug in HP with similar
behaviour - we are on Solaris)

SSKGXPT 0x3066b00 flags info for network 0
socket no 9 IP 164.22.21.1 UDP 61635
sflags SSKGXPT_UP
info for network 1
socket no 12IP 0.0.0.0  UDP 61636
sflags SSKGXPT_UP

Is there a workaround to make Oracle choose the
correct IP for the interconnect?

TIA,
Ravi.

Re: Sparky auth file

2003-07-11 Thread Mladen Gogala
user_dump_dest=dua3:[oracle.admin.SID.udump]
You can use whatever device sou have instead of "dua3". My last
VMS experience was in 1995, with OpenVMS 5.5-2, on a VAX 4400, so
it might be just a little bit rusty. Allegedly, there is a wonderful
new OS, created by David Cutler, the creator of VMS 5, that is easier to
master. Given the financial might of the company which is selling it,
I wouldn't quite dismiss the claim that the whole world will be running it
very soon.

Re: Unique constraint violation question.

2003-07-11 Thread Mladen Gogala
Well, DBMS_RTFM package is a package on double secret probation,
accessible only to people who ask questions like "how to get records which
have the same unique key as a record that I'm trying to insert".
I usually pull out references like that when Jupiter is in the 7th house and
Venus lines up with Mars or, alternatively, when the weather is humid,
I'm suffering from alergies and I encounter a question like the one above.

There is a way, but you have to master the Tao first. When you
do, you will not ask questions like that. Short of that,
you could try selecting the record(s) from the table which
have the same unique key as the record you're trying to insert.
Truncate table will also rid you of the problems with duplicate
keys.

RE: Oracle security question

2003-07-11 Thread Jacques Kilchoer
In addition to what Dennis said:
if Orace init parameter O7_DICTIONARY_ACCESSIBILITY = FALSE (the default in 9.0 and
9.2)
then to connect as user SYS you need to specify the connect string like this:
connect SYS/password AS SYSDBA

The reason the user SYS is more protected than the user SYSTEM is because:
a) the user SYS is the owner of the data dictionary - the set of tables that are used
by Oracle to store internal information about the objects in the database;
b) the user SYS is the one you use for tasks such as starting up or shutting down the
database.

SYSTEM is s DBA user created along with the database.

In general, you should do the following:
only sign on as SYS to startup and shutdown the database, or for recovery.
create another DBA user and sign on as that other user for any DBA tasks.
I hardly ever use the SYSTEM account except for creation of some Oracle-related
objects (like a public PLAN_TABLE or the PRODUCT_USER_PROFILE table.)

   Sounds like a trial-and-error to me. Someone else's settings probably
wouldn't help you because maybe they only have 12 standby databases. My
guess is that your objective is to minimize the memory usage. Some thoughts:
  - Try reducing the settings until the database won't run, or fails
frequently enough to be annoying (like 4031 errors).
  - Monitor how far behind production the standby lags.
  - Too much reduction may be self-defeating. For example, making
DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS too small might cause the same blocks to be continually
reloaded, increasing I/O.
This sounds like most DBA work - make a pass or two at it, then move on to
the next fire.

1. Other standby databases (14).
2. Disaster Recovery. Automatic process applying logs only.
3. Bare essentials. When/If we have to turn to it we will replace the init
file with the production init file.

I am looking for exactly what you said. A bare essential init file.

Hi Kevin,

I guess all I have is more questions:

1) What else do you have running on the server that has your standby
database?

2) What is the purpose of the standby database (disaster recovery or
reporting)?

3) If it is for disaster recovery, shouldn't the settings
on the standby reflect the settings for your non standby database or are you
looking at handling bare essentials and not your normal capacity?

Maybe some of the answers to these questions will help answer your question
to the settings.

Evening folks;
  Does anyone happen to have any recommended init file settings for a
standby database ??

We are running Oracle 8.1.7.4 on a Solaris system. I think that we may have
the settings on the standbys too high and are therefore wasting resources.

Re: Oracle security question

Dennis

Thank you very much. My data in that database is changed three times. The first
is whole data being delete. The second is over ten thousands records being
added. The third is whole data related to a month being deleted. I know my
working environment is very complicated. For this report application, I write
shell scripts and C/C++ program to parsing Apache web server access log file
(www.welch.jhu.edu) in order to get client ip, access date, and host ip, which
are associated with the special pattern as "ntlinktrack.cgi", which is
associated with Library E-Book,E-Journal, and E-database. Then I need to
schedule a solaris cron job to process access log daily and load parsed data
into database. Also I create some log files for saving intermediate information
from my program. Then I create some ColdFusion pages to post these results into
website. In my database there are over million records. Oracle DBA is new duty
for me since I had found that my data was missing. This is the reason I post my
question on Oracle user group. Now I am trying to read as much as I can but I do
not have much time. I want to make sure my database is secure as early as I can.
So what do you think of my reason?
Thank you very much!

guess is that your objective is to minimize the memory usage.

 I knew I would be providing more information.

We are running Oracle 8.1.7.4 on a Solaris system. I think that we may have

Database benchmark

2003-07-11 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
The last published database benchmark was the one by eWeek over a year ago.
The following article provides some insights into why database benchmarking
is such a tricky business.
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1186144,00.asp

Since the benchmark showed great performance by Oracle, the article mainly
discusses why certain seemingly insignificant factors caused MS SQL and DB2
to perform poorly.

Title: RE: Security, private vs. public synonyms and contention data dictionary

A lot of people have posted messages like: "I have
several applications in my DB, but I can't create new public synonyms for my new
app, because public synonym with that name already exists!".
So, this should be one major reason why not to use
public synonyms,

But yes, check ixora, there is a very good
explanation about impact of synonyms.
Generally, public synonums are worst performance
wise, private synonyms aren't that good either, referencing to tables directly
in your SQL would be the fastest way (talking about parsing speed). Since from
developers point of view hardcoding the schema names would be quite bad, there's
an alternate solution of not hardcoding schema names to SQL, but using alter
session set currecnt_schema in your application to set which schema should be
used (of course in multi-schema environments you won't get away with that
easily).

Re: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

2003-07-11 Thread Tanel Poder
Hi!

> Actually, it is the FOR UPDATE that locks the table.

No, for update still locks *only the rows* selected with for update clause.
All other parts of table are available for both reading AND writing (of
course if other transactions don't have locks on some rows).
And you can read the whole table, despite any insert, delete, update or for
update clauses.

So, don't give false information here.

There's an exception (as usual), if you have set ROW_LOCKING init parameter
to INTENT, then the whole table is locked during update clauses. Also, you
can use lock table command to lock tables if needed, but this goes beyond
scope of this posting...

of CURRENT OF? Here are my two separate examples:
/*   1  this one has a CURRENT OF  */

DECLARE

   CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
   SELECT  *
   FROMEmp
   FOR UPDATE;
BEGIN
FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP
UPDATE EMP
SETSALARY = SALARY * 1.08
WHERE  CURRENT OF EmpCursor
END LOOP;

END;

/* 2 same as above, except without the CURRENT OF */
DECLARE
  CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
  SELECT  *
  FROMEmp
  FOR UPDATE;
BEGIN
FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP
UPDATE EMP
SETSALARY = SALARY * 1.08
WHERE  EMP_ID = EmpRec.Emp_ID;
END LOOP;

END;
/
Is one more efficient than the other? If I could have done
business without the CURRENT OF, then why did oracle made
it available?
thx

maybe nobody cares. but anyway, more experiments show as long as striped raw LV is
bigger than 4092MB (4K block size), oracle datafile size could only be several MB or
something, not even close to 1000MB. seems like there's some kind of overflow here.

problem went away after loaded 9.2.0.3.
again there was no problem w/ 8.1.7.0 either.
so i think there's a bug in 8.1.7.4.

installed users

2003-07-11 Thread Rachel Carmichael
Okay, I have, as Mladen suggested, been running the following

begin
dbms_rtfm.database_concepts;
end;
/

and even the lesser_known one of dbms_websearch.metalink

to find out exactly which installed user is for what Oracle option.

I've started a project to review all users in all our databases and
remove unused/unnecessary users or at the very least restrict the
privileges they have to the minimal ones they need. In several of the
databases there are both ORDSYS and CTXSYS. From what I've been able to
find out by running the above procedures, ORDSYS is for Intermedia. I
could have sworn CTXSYS was the Intermedia account. So... is there a
manual I've missed that tells me exactly which of these two I have to
have in my databases and why?

In addition, I know you have to install Spatial Option as part of an
Oracle installation, even if you don't want to use it. Some of these
databases also have the account MDSYS, some don't. All but one are
9iR2. We don't use Spatial. The two databases that have this account
(8.1.7.4 and 9.2.0.2) both use Intermedia. Does that have something to
do with it? I don't want to remove an account I need, but I don't want
to leave ones I don't need in the databases.

Let's not even begin to talk about the fact that just about EVERY user
seems to have "unlimited tablespace" priv.

This is not going to be pretty, easy or clean. But I will have secure
databases. Except of course, every app has a configuration file in
which they hard-code the passwords. Sigh

Thanks for your message. Now I have changed sys password by the following

alter user sys identified by xxx
But when I try to login from sql plus window by using sys, I cannot successfully
login. Also I get an error message. The message is something like "connection to
sys should be as sysdba or sysoper". So my question is what sys for?
Thank you very much!

RE: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

2003-07-11 Thread Chris Stephens
Title: RE: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

Locking if something oracle is very good at.  It happens all over the place and it happens quickly...there is very little overhead to it.

Block headers.  ...each block in the affected table.

By updating the table by rowid, you get the best of both worlds assuming no one is re-orging the table (or somehow altering rowid to row value relationship) and that there is no need prevent users from touching the table while you are doing the update.

Cursor c_crud is select rowid, col1 from t_crud;

For v_crud in c_crud loop

Update t_crud
Set col1=whatever
where rowid = v_crud.rowid;

End loop;

(I remember reading about this in Guy Harrison's SQL tuning book...if you have a copy, I'd check that outbecause I am very prone to memory recall error :) )

So CURRENT OF has to lock, so its slower, right?

Do you use 1 or 2 interconnects? Does your oradebug
ipc dump show both IPs? For me shows:

SSKGXPT 0x3066b00 flags info for network 0
    socket no 9 IP 172.168.193.2 UDP 41143
    sflags SSKGXPT_UP    info for network 1
    socket no 0 IP 0.0.0.0   UDP 0

Even 172.168.193.2 is not one of the (2) IPs we have
for interconnect.

Thanks for your message. The reason I ask this question is that now I am
responsible for creating some reports based upon this database. But I have found
that there are unaccountable data in my database, which is not from my insert

Re: RE: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

2003-07-11 Thread rgaffuri
when you update inside of a cursor you have two steps.

Fetch data into the cursor
Update the table based on what you selected.

So while you are selecting data and before you update, the record could change. This
means someone else could update it and youc ould update over it without knowing it.
This is a bad idea in the database world and is known as 'disapearing updates'. So you
lock the row when you select it. Not when the actual update is processed.

Updating inside of cursors is generally a bad idea. Its more code and its MUCH slower
than a straight update statement. Ive seen some publications stating that it can
before to do this way, but Ive tested every case I can think of and not once was it
even close.

what is the update statement you want to put inside the cursor?

Repeat after me...readers never block writers...writers never block readers...

The update will lock the row(s) of the result set, but it will not block anyone from
reading the data. However, they may not read the modifications made by the update
until it is committed.

RE: RAC system Calls

2003-07-11 Thread Ravi Kulkarni
Do you use 1 or 2 interconnects? Does your oradebug
ipc dump show both IPs? For me shows:

SSKGXPT 0x3066b00 flags info for network 0
socket no 9 IP 172.168.193.2 UDP 41143
sflags SSKGXPT_UPinfo for network 1
socket no 0 IP 0.0.0.0   UDP 0
sflags SSKGXPT_DOWN

Even 172.168.193.2 is not one of the (2) IPs we have
for interconnect.

Thanks,
Ravi.

RE: Oracle security question

2003-07-11 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Don
   If only you can make updates to your Oracle database, then you must enter
all the data ;-)
   From the tone of your posting, I'm going to assume that you are pretty
new to Oracle. You may want to get a good basic administration book like
Oracle9i DBA 101.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0072224746/qid=1057949734/sr=8
-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-2287688-5574335?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
It is also a good idea to always mention your Oracle version and platform
(Unix, NT, etc.) in your posts.
First, log in with the SYSTEM username. Then change the password for SYSTEM
and SYS with the command:
ALTER USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY x;
Where x is your new password.
You should be able to make these changes without affecting any end users.
Next you should identify your groups of users and how they access Oracle.
Basically you need to identify what their access requirements are and then
audit the usernames they use to ensure the privileges granted are just what
is required. This is also a good time to see about changing passwords, but
first buy the book and read up on the basics of Oracle security.

Change the password of all Oracle related users (sys, system,...)
Revoke access from all other users or make sure all other users have select

What is the use of such databases ?

We are running Oracle 8.1.7.4 on a Solaris system. I think that we may have

RE: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

2003-07-11 Thread Kevin Toepke
Yes, using WHERE CURRENT OF is faster. It is the same as saying "WHERE rowid
= emprec.rowid", just more readable. And accesses by rowid are faster than
index accesses.

Also, what happens if you don't have a unique or primary constraint on the
table and whole rows can be duplicated? Then you pretty much need to use
WHERE CURRENT OF.

Could anyone give us an idea as to the full usefullness
of CURRENT OF? Here are my two separate examples:

/*   1  this one has a CURRENT OF  */

DECLARE

CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
SELECT  *
FROMEmp
FOR UPDATE;

BEGIN
 FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP

 UPDATE EMP
 SETSALARY = SALARY * 1.08
 WHERE  CURRENT OF EmpCursor

 END LOOP;

END;

/* 2 same as above, except without the CURRENT OF */
DECLARE

   CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
   SELECT  *
   FROMEmp
   FOR UPDATE;

BEGIN
 FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP

 UPDATE EMP
 SETSALARY = SALARY * 1.08
 WHERE  EMP_ID = EmpRec.Emp_ID;

 END LOOP;

END;
/

Is one more efficient than the other? If I could have done
business without the CURRENT OF, then why did oracle made
it available?

thx

Subject: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

Could anyone give us an idea as to the full usefullness
of CURRENT OF?  Here are my two separate examples:

/*   1  this one has a CURRENT OF  */

DECLARE

    CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
    SELECT  *
    FROM    Emp
    FOR UPDATE;

BEGIN
 FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP

 UPDATE EMP
 SET    SALARY = SALARY * 1.08
 WHERE  CURRENT OF EmpCursor

 END LOOP;

END;

/*   2 same as above, except without the CURRENT OF   */
DECLARE

   CURSOR  EmpCursor  IS
   SELECT  *
   FROM    Emp
   FOR UPDATE;

BEGIN
 FOR EmpRec IN EmpCursor LOOP

 UPDATE EMP
 SET    SALARY = SALARY * 1.08
 WHERE  EMP_ID = EmpRec.Emp_ID;

 END LOOP;

END;
/

Is one more efficient than the other? If I could have done
business without the CURRENT OF, then why did oracle made
it available?

thx
maa

RE: full usefullness of CURRENT OF ???

2003-07-11 Thread Chris Stephens

I believe
(I could be totally wrong here) the reason for the CURRENT OF is both for
performance and consistency.

The second example has to run the update statement seperately.  CURRENT
OF can go directly to the row(s) affected.  CURRENT OF still has to modify
each block header in the table to lock which is a small performance hit.
To prevent that you could update by rowid and avoid the header updates.

Also, the CURRENT OF locks the table so that no one can modify (or even
read) it while the transaction is taking place.  This guarantees nothing
is changing between retrieving values from the cursor and updating the table
based on those values.

Store and retrieve image from bfile in Oracle 8.1.7.4

2003-07-11 Thread Liu, Jack
Hi,
I use Oracle 8.1.7.4 to store some images with bfile. After I created a
directory in DB with "create or replace directory MY_FILES as '/mydir' "
and insert one image file with dbms_lob.loadfromfile(), then I found I don't
need to insert other images in that directory. I can retrieve and display
them in Web with dbms_lob.read() after I put some new images in that
directory, whatever the size, format (gif or jpg), even pdf (as long as I
use owa_util.mime_header to set mime type).
My question is: is this fine? I don't need to use ORDSYS.ORDImage and set
properties for them?

Thanks,

Jack

RE: RAC system Calls

2003-07-11 Thread Gogala, Mladen
The "times" call is very cheap and could not possibly consume so much time.
Here is what man page says:

NAME
  times - get process and child process times

 SYNOPSIS
  #include

  clock_t times(struct tms *buffer);

 DESCRIPTION
  times() fills the structure pointed to by buffer with time-accounting
  information. The structure defined in is as follows:

   struct tms {
   clock_t tms_utime;  /* user time */
   clock_t tms_stime;  /* system time */"
   clock_t tms_cutime; /* user time, children */
   clock_t tms_cstime; /* system time, children */
   };

  This information comes from the calling process and each of its
  terminated child processes for which it has executed a wait(),
  wait3(), or waitpid(). The times are in units of 1/CLK_TCK seconds,
  where CLK_TCK is processor dependent The value of CLK_TCK can be
  queried using the sysconf() function (see sysconf(2)).

Your problem is with the preceding "read" call. Try to figure out where is
attempting to read from, is there a process handling the file/device and
to which process is all that kernel CPU time billed. Try with ps -el and
top. Also, try with "netstat -i" to see whether you're retransmitting on
the high speed interconnect.

Mladen, As mentioned earlier, I have lots of "times"

ODS architecture

2003-07-11 Thread Stephane Paquette
Hi all,

For those having built or working with an ODS, we are in the architecture
phase of building an ODS.

How do check integrity between the source systems and data in the ODS ?
In case of the ODS and the main source systems have lost synchronism, how do
resync the ODS ?

Any other major topics we should planned for ?

Thanks

2003-07-11 Thread Li, Xiangli
Hi, All
I have a question on how to interpret materialized view log, which has a
field change_vector$$. I think this fields record all the changes on master
table, I need to understand the updates on the master table so I can
develop my own API to copy the change to a flat file.

Any help would be appreciated.

I agree that Regularly Irregular meetings make more sense for people with
tech jobs.
Makes the meetings less "boring and predictable".

So I've come up with this model:
1st meeting
2nd meeting after a week
3rd meeting after two weeks
4th meeting after four weeks
5th meeting after eight weeks (around here or at next iteration they
start complaining...)
6th meeting after a week...
7th meeting after two weeks...

Don't know if what we do in our shop here qualifies for your question or not, but our dev groups do "stand-up meetings." Relatively quick meetings (that can be done standing up; no meeting rooms required) that are usually finished in about 20 minutes. In the stand-ups, we get heads-up for things and specifications that might be coming down the pipeline from the product management and design side. We get a quick update on the state of deployment (what version has rolled into production, what version is in the QA pipeline) and what the next impending set of changes are about to get pushed onto the dev servers. If there's any potential "gotcha"s that have been experienced (especially on the coding front) they get publicized in the stand-ups as well.

The main point of our stand-ups are to make sure that all the developers are relatively aware of the scheduling and direction of the product, and to highlight any programming difficulties and workarounds that might arise so that when different developers hit those gotchas, they'll already know that a solution might already.

These stand-up meetings are basically within a development team/group. Project leads have their own meetings with the product management group. So essentially, the product manager has his own meetings; then the product manager has meetings with the dev project leads to convey what they want in the next iteration of the product; the project leads then present these to the dev group in a stand-up meeting.

Just wondering if your organization has tech meetings, and what is discussed and what the goals of the meetings are?

I've been asked about this, and was wondering if there is a quick list out there any where.

RE: Billing cpu usage on a monthly basis

2003-07-11 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Hans
I just returned from vacation and thought I'd fallen into the Twilight
Zone and returned to the glory days of time-sharing. My experience is that
you are talking real money here and be sure whatever you build, make it
bulletproof. It sounds as if you're already on the right track by
considering the consequences of aborted sessions.
You could use the underlying O.S. usage statistics for this. However, if
you use a single instance installed as the "oracle" username, then nearly
all of the resource usage will be tagged to that username, rather than your
customer usernames. One way around that obstacle would be to create a
separate instance for each customer and have Oracle installed separately for
each customer.
That is about as profound as I can get on a Friday just returned from
vacation.

Hi,

We're planning to consolidate a large amount of our production
databases into one database. Our customers will be charged based on
their use of the central machine's resources (other suggestions are
very welcome). I saw a method of keeping track of resource usage, by
means of the auditing mechanisms in Oracle:
- build a system trigger which recognises logon and logoff.

I assume that'll work just fine. However, I'm not sure how to charge
our customer for aborted sessions.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

HTH,

There is a way, but you have to master the Tao first. When you
do, you will not ask questions like that. Short of that,
you could try selecting the record(s) from the table which
have the same unique key as the record you're trying to insert.
Truncate table will also rid you of the problems with duplicate
