Hi Yong,

One thing I should have mentioned when I posted my "epic" is that it not
only attempts to correct the numerous technical errors in the article but
also attempts to answer the various questions the article raises but totally
fails to address. What I find most astonishing about the article is that the
author confesses at the conclusion he has no idea when and why an index
rebuild is beneficial. And as the author doesn't know, then surely it must
all be so difficult, a "scientific-less phenomenon".

If I can convince anyone who makes it through my email that this isn't
rocket science, then it's been worth the bandwidth.

BTW, does anyone know what a rocket scientist refers to when they say "Hey,
this is all quite easy, it sure ain't ?" ?

Cheers ;)

instance on the server, this situation
gets more complex if you have several instances on a server.
There's also the possibility that the
instance(s) shared memory is in more than one segment. You can use
ipcs and oradebug to decipher which memory segments belong to which instance.  Google for ipcs and oradebug,
several helpful references showed up

John! When I've run into this problem it was because there was a memory
segmentbeing forced open.  If you have the same issue, I can hep.
First, assumingthat you're on Unix (if you're not, please ignore the
rest of this email andjust have a lovely day), and that your database is
down (otherwise, if youwanted to do a shutdown abort, that wouldn't be such
a bad thing), you cando an ipcs -mAIf that was the only
instance on your box, the rest is pretty easy, cuz theoffending segment is
the only one owned by oracle in the list.  If itwasn't, and there are
other oracle segments on the box, you have to find outwhich one is your guy.
The memory segments associated with a particularinstance should have
very similar (but not exactly the same) CTIMEs.  Ifthere is one way out
of whack, that's your guy.  Now, this is where mymemory gets a little
fuzzy (age, doncha know?)... if the instances startedup at nearly exactly
the same time for some reason, you are looking for a"0" in the segsz(?) column (anybody remember fersher onthis one?).
By now, you should know which memory segment to kill.  To
kill the offending memory segment, do an ipcrm -m
on it.  You, of course, want to be exceedingly
careful here, and just assumethat all the usual disclaimers apply.  If
you kill the wrong segment, yourother database is not going to be very happy
about it.But assuming you killed the right segment, your database with
the LGWRproblem should be well and truly down.  Bring 'er on up and the
LGWR processshould come up just fine.Bambi.-Original

Title: RE: decrease initial extent

Mladen,

Keep reading, it's further down.

From the 8.1.7 SQL Reference Manual, under the ALTER TABLE entry
(top of page 8-36):

"If you specify KEEP, then the specified amount of space is kept
and the remaining space is freed. When the remaining
number of extents is less than MINEXTENTS, then
MINEXTENTS is adjusted to the new number of extents. If the
initial extent becomes smaller than INITIAL, then INITIAL
is adjusted to the new size."

I don't understand. Here is what manual says:

deallocate_unused_clause

Use the deallocate_unused_clause to explicitly deallocate unused space at the end of the table,
partition or subpartition, overflow data segment, LOB data segment, or LOB index and make the
space available for other segments in the tablespace.

It's not supposed to change the characteristics of the initial extent. Funny. I'll test it
at home.

Opinions sought on possible TOAD replacement
Management have been grumbling about the cost of TOAD Professional
licenses, and have been "recommended" a cheaper product called PL/SQL Developer
by Allround Automations (available from Inthink Corporation at $150 a pop). Now,
I've been to the product website, and read up on all its features, and it
basically looks like a nice enough product, but aimed squarely at PL/SQL
developers, rather than including all the DBA-oriented goodies we find in TOAD.
My first reaction is to respond by saying "fine, give it to the developers to
replace their copies of TOAD, if they find it adequate for development, but it's
not a DBA tool, so I'll keep my TOAD Xpert with DBA module, thanks very
much!".

But if
anyone on the list has tried both products, I'd be interested to know what you
think. Is it as usable as TOAD Professional for developers? Does it have hidden
charms which would make it a suitable replacement for DBA use? How responsive
are the product developers to requests for enhancements? Any input is very
welcome!

Thanks for the replies so far. Considering the fact that my database is
tiny ( just around 3 GB ), How many of them can work on same server? I can just
test with 5 instances, with limited hardware. Will the CPUs be able to take load
of 100 instances? Is it worth experimenting this?

I am on 8.1.7.4 and the application is already built. I stand no chance of
changing the code. That is why using individual schemas for individual users is
not an option. Right now I am just asked if 100 instances can run on same server
and I don’t have solid answer.

Just on side note, can I ask, What is the maximum number of instances
anyone has ever worked/heard being installed with in same server?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure of the export compatibility, but you should know that 9i
clients won't talk to a 7.3.4 database, and 7.3.4 clients won't talk to a
9.2 database, which could be a problem.  At least, they're not certified

Hi,

We are investigating possibilities for migration of an oracle 7.3.4 to
oracle 9i. We want to separate our
production DB from the app-logic such that we can migrate from oracle
7.3.4 on hp-ux 10.20 to oracle 9i
on hp-ux 11. Problem is our development and test-environment because we
cannot separate the logic at the
same time here also from the db (costs). Does anyone have any experience
with exporting from oracle 9i
to oracle 7.3.4 ?

I found the underlying note on metalink about the same problem but with
oracle 8. I have limited experience on oracle8
and none on oracle 9. So I hope you can give some tips.
..
You need to run the 7.3 version of export against your 8.0 database via
sqlnet/net8. Beforehand, you need to run rdbms/admin/catexp7.sql against
your 8.0 database. This creates the 7.3 export views required. Note that
if you have used any 8.0 specific features (e.g. objects) these will not
be exported for obvious reasons.

Tia,

Jeroen

It's
due to Oracle using multiple archivers.
For

RE: copy a datafile to a raw device

2003-06-19 Thread Adams, Matthew (GECP, MABG, 088130)
Title: RE: copy a datafile to a raw device

It's been a number of years since I did anything with
raw devices, so this is all ancient and possibly
out of date/incorrect.

I believe Stephen to be wrong.  The bits and bytes
written on the data file are identical, regardless of
whether the device is raw or cooked.  However,
back in the day I worked with these, the file could not use
the first block of the raw device, as that was reserved for
operating system usage (and back then on those devices, this was
8K).  So, we had to do something like

dd if=system of=/dev/raw obs=8192 seek=1

to force the dd to skip the first 8K.

Since you have already overwritten the first block of the raw
device, you might have to drop it and re-create it.

Also, since the first 8K was reserved for the OS, the size of
the raw device must be at LEAST the size of the datafile + 8K.

Well heck.  Nobody else has replied, so I might take a stab at it here.  I
suspect that the format of the data (bits and bytes) required on a raw
device is different than the format of the data in a file in a file system.
I'm stretching a bit here, but I think an analogy would be what would happen
if you dd a file from UFS to NTFS.  The data on the NTFS might be a digital
copy of what was on UFS, but it's format is totally useless in the context
of NTFS.

median function

2003-06-10 Thread Adams, Matthew (GECP, MABG, 088130)
Title: median function

I'm attempting to write a query to calculate the median
of a column of numbers.

The first solution I came across was

Select avg(col1) MEDIAN from
( select rownum row1, col1 from a where col1 in (select col1 from a )) a
where a.row1 in ( select floor(count(*)/2 +.5) from a )
  or a.row1 in ( select ceil(count(*)/2+.5) from a )

This does too many FT scans (4) of table a, so I tried to write
a simpler version using the analytical functions.

I have gotten as far as

 SELECT col1
 FROM
 (
 SELECT col1
 , row_number() OVER (ORDER BY col1) AS r
 , CEIL(COUNT(col1) OVER () /2) m
 FROM a
 )
 WHERE r = m

However, this only works for an odd number of values.
IIRC, if an even number of values is present, the median
is defined as the average of the two middle-most numbers.

Before I spend much more time on this, has anybody already written
one ?

RE: Quick Question -- 8.1.7 logs applied to 9.2.0 database

2003-03-25 Thread Adams, Matthew (GECP, MABG, 088130)
Title: RE: Quick Question -- 8.1.7 logs applied to 9.2.0 database

We did this in order to get a test db up in a new
environment that would eventually become production.
We knew that for the production cut over, it
would be a cold backup/restore to a new server, so
there was no risk in trying it.

By causing a log switch immediately after taking the
tablespaces out of backup mode, I am making sure
that all transactions that have all transactions that
have hit the DB up until that point.

I have also used this technique to move/clone and
upgrade 8.0.5 databases to 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 for
testing environments and have never enountered any
problems.  I would NEVER NEVER NEVER (is that
enough nevers?)  use this to generate a
new production system.

I did not recover the database in 8.1.7 and
then upgrade because the
destination machine did not have the 8.1.7 code installed
on it at that time.

Courageous and it looks like it worked.  But this wouldn't be supported by
Oracle.
Why did you have to go by time ? Why not recover until cancel and apply
all available archive logs ?  Ensure that your online redo logs with the last
few transactions are also archived out of the 8.1.7 environment and then
recover till the last archive.

I would apply all the archive logs in 8.1.7, recover the database in 8.1.7
and then upgrade it to 9.2.

RE: Quick Question -- 8.1.7 logs applied to 9.2.0 database instan

2003-03-24 Thread Adams, Matthew (GECP, MABG, 088130)

I did
this a couple of weeks ago.  The
answer is yes, but you recover
first, then
upgrade.

You've got to

0)
Note the sequence number of the log file being written
to in
the source database before you start.
1) put
source in hot backup mode
2)
copy files to new destination
3)
take source out of backup mode
4)
NOTE the date/time
5)
'alter system switch logfile' on the source
6)
copy all archived log files from the one
noted in the step 0 to the most recent
(inclusive) to destination
7)
(optional) on source, do a 'alter database backup controlfile to
trace'
8)
(optional) copy the trace file to destination
9)  (optional) using the 9.2.0 executables, use
trace file to re-create control file, renaming database
10) on
destination do 'alter database recover automatic until time 'TIME NOTED IN STEP
4'  using backup controlfile'
 The 9.2.0 executables can read
and understand log files from 8.1.7
11) on
destination do 'alter database open resetlogs'
12)  On destination, perform steps for manual
upgrade from 8.1.7 to 9.2.0
13)
Celebrate with a couple of truely great beers (i recommend Sierra Nevada
Celebration Ale)

Good
luck

Title: RE: How long to hold onto old Oracle CDs?

It figures.  We're one the largest accounts Oracle
has got.  Heck, Oracle has two people at HQ that
deal with nothing but GE business units, and I
STILL can't get 7.3.4, 8.0.5 or 8.0.6 for NT.

Even my dedicated account rep struck out getting
these disks.

Oh, well.  I'll go back and try it again.

I cut an iTAR on Metalink back last Oct. It would have been simpler. If
someone had maintained our support agreement. But while that was being
resolved. The sent me the CD. I got the CD in a couple of days.

I was informed by someone at IBM that Oracle could burn new CD's. If you
truly have a need for the CD. Such as lost/broken. Put pressure on them via
your account rep.

I hardly think it is likely for a vendor to say they don't have the code. If
we have people on the list with software dating back to Oracle 4, I doubt
Oracle is purging its archives of the software. It would be irrational. It
is more likely they are just being difficult. Doing nothing is always the
easiest route for the vendor.

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

It seems to me that IOUG has become a wholly owned
subsidiary of TUSC. TUSC in turn has an incestuous
relationship with Oracle. All very cozy.

No real complaint about the arrangements. Someone has
to step up to the plate if IOUG is going to continue
to be a viable organization and in this economic
climate few can afford to do it.

Should IOUG be able to survive without Oracle?
Probably. Will it be able to survive without Oracle?
I doubt it.

Subject: Version Controlling in Oracle database - Ideas ?

Looking for a solution to version controlling of database objects in Oracle.

The scenario is like this:

Multiple people simultaneously work on the same database object in TOAD.

How can we implement a version controlling feature.

Putting this in simple words,

If X checks out a file from TOAD and Y needs to work on the same file
(assuming they have the same privilege),
Y should not be allowed to work on the object till X finishes working on it.

We want to put a restriction on the database objects such that simultaneously no two
users should be able to work it.

Integrating VSS with TOAD was not acceptable since it would be file based(saving the .sqls).

Qs. Is there any feature available in Oracle(with oracle 8.1.7) or any third party tool that does this ?

I'll go along with Dennis, their online brochure offers
no compelling reason to investigate this.

The lack of any mention of MV's ( as in, "Why our product

it won't require tuning by the DBA make it seem rather
suspicious.

It depends on how much data is changed in the database.  If there is no data
manipulation, then you need very little archive space (just enough for the
online logs when you run a backup).  Look in the alert log to see how many
log switches occur.  I think this will give you a reasonable estimate of how
much archiving will occur.

change the log mode from non-archive-mode to archive-mode. I want to change

enough if I change the log mode of my tablesapces?

I want to know if it's possible to do the OS upgrade first and then the

The Oracle certification matrix only says that 8.1.6 is desupported and
therefore doesn't list any certified OS versions for it.

Did anyone run 8.1.6 on Solaris 8 or remember if it was ever certified?

Of course, sacred cows make the best steaks (sorry, Gaja).

An excellent example is the age old ideas that the earth was the center of
the universe, that the world was flat, that the Cubs will never win another
World Series (okay...bad example). Knowledge is limited by what we can
currently test. We are always restricted by our physical world (I don't have
a clue as to how I can personally test if the world is indeed round) but
also by what we choose to accept as fact. What happens to indexing
strategies when disk reads are faster than memory access operations? Before
you say, "It will never happen" think about it...Can you predict the future
with absolute certainty?

Even the 'experts' choose to accept certain facts. Look at the scientific
world. Many of the most 'brilliant' ideas now can be proven false. According
to the experts, we only need 5 computers worldwide with 64k of memory.

I checked by Data Server Internals texts from 1999 and they preach 15% of
rows returned for indexing, and this series is certainly looked upon as the
'expert'. Anyone out there with a more recent version? I wonder what it
says...

IMHO, the bottom line is that many of us are so concerned with just keeping
systems running that we have no time for our own personal research and
development. Until I decided to write an article about rollback segments, I
never applied the scientific method to my understanding of Oracle. Will
application of the method explain everything? Nope, but it will come close.
It requires a lot of time and hard work, something that is a precious
commodity these days, especially in the corporate world. I am very grateful
for people like Cary, Tim, Anjo, Craig, Gaja, Kirti, et.al. who take the
time to say "prove it!" and then perform the experiments and, most
importantly, are willing to share the results with us on this list and at
meetings like IOUG-A.

I think the question "Is nothing sacred?" is an interesting one. Lots of
these things we're talking about have been false for a very long time.
It's only that people are finally starting to notice them. Product
changes are often *not* what's driving "new knowledge." In many cases,
the "change" that's taking place is the improvement in the quality of
our conclusions.

"Is nothing sacred?" I think it's perfectly legitimate to confront
people's (and companies') conjectures with scientific data.

Jesse,

No, nothing in sacred any more.  Change is the theme of the day.
BTW: did
you experiment with caching these tables in the keep_pool??  I've had
some real
good luck with unindexed tables that are small (in the 1 to 10 block
size) that
get assigned to the keep pool and retained in memory forever.

Also, BTW: I'll disagree with Cary and Hotsos on the costs of a PIO
vs a
LIO.  In my experience it's not such a clear cut distinction.  Whenever
Oracle
needs a block of data that data must be in memory which means that a PIO
requires 2 LIO's to fulfill the request and on top of that there may be
other
memory management routines that get called if an empty data block in
memory must
be created.  All in all it's a very mixed bag that needs to be
considered case
by case.  I believe that was one of the reasons Oracle allows us to
configure
the cache three ways.  Static, seldomly changed tables in the keep pool.
Large
constantly changing tables in the discard pool.  Also to index or not to
index
are no longer such clear cut item, especially with CBO which loves to
ignore
indexes.

There
are two check boxes at the end of the DBCA steps.  One is to create a template, the other
is to create scripts.  The tricky
thing about the 9i DBCA is that the options are different if you choose New
Database rather than the other choices.
I’ve checked and edited the scripts after using the Create New Database
option.

I must disagree. There is no
$ORACLE_HOME/admin//scripts. There is no admin directory under
$ORACLE_HOME. In 9.2.0 you must create a template first by using the default
configuration, save it, then exit the OUI. Then start it up again and use the
existing template.  Go through the normal prompts and then select the
option to have it generate a shell script file near the end of the
process.  Have it save the script file in a directory of your choosing or it will
put it in
$ORACLE_HOME/assistants/dbca/templates by
default.

I always like to create my
databases by hand via
the create database statement.
However, whenever a  new version comes out I use the dbca assistant
to  generate the
create database script so I can see
what  Oracle does by default (although I usually don't
run  this generated script.)
I'm trying to do this with my
new 9.2 installation, but at the end (step 7), it doesn't seem to
allow the
generation of the script without creating
the  database.

Is dbca creating a script to
run and if so, where is it storing it?

Title: RE: Get together at OOW

Not all the time.  At the IOUG-A Live in Ananheim a few years
ago, we all met
at a resturant for dinner.  We had just one bill, I collected the
cash from everyone and paid the bill.  Everybody insisted that they
only gave me enough money to cover their portion of the bill and
the tip (which was an automatic 18%).  After paying the bill and
tip, I still had about $15 left over and everybody insisted that
it wasn't theirs, so we went back to hotel and I bought a round.

This is just that kind of group.  Generous to a fault with
time, knowledge, and on occasion, money.

Jesse,

I'll refrain from personal comments, but on CJ's quote, he's correct.  Nulls
are an oddity.  They cannot be true or false ( = NULL or
!= NULL), nor can they equal anything.  They are in effect a third
logical state of nothingness.  You also have to code most applications with
indicator variables to check for their existence.  All in all a real pain in the
backside.  BUT, if you give me the possibility that nulls exist in the data I
much prefer using them vs. many a third party solution of a single space.  No
application that I can reasonably think of should use NULLS, except those pre-81
where there are obsolete columns.

On the link below is this quote from C.J.Date:

"I don't want you to think that my SQL solution to your problem means I
advocate the use of nulls.  Nulls are a disaster."

Of course, he doesn't expound upon it (probably not a need except for
dummies like me).  Anyone care to comment?  (On the quote, not on my
