RE: looking for job

2002-02-14 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

Surendra,

Sorry, I don't know of any jobs for you ... Do you live in the New Jersey
area?I'm looking myself, actually.

I have a question about Sony in New Jersey ... I hear they're doing some
SAP work, and I was wondering if you know of any positions either available
or opening up for SAP Basis or SAP Basis/APO Contractors. Do you know
anything about the project?

I will be coming out of my project by the end of this month.
Please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], if you have any Oracle DBA

RE: Upgrading from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7 - Please help

2002-02-12 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

Fred,

Don't waste your time installing 8.0.5 unless you plan to go back to it some
time in the future (Back to the Future?). Install 8.1.7 and patch to
8.1.7.2 (or higher).

Copy your datafiles to the new system. Make sure that you copy them to the
exact directory structure that existed previously! If you don't, you will
run into major difficulties, especially if you haven't done a backup control
file to trace!

Read all the documentation on the migration, and perform the migration which
should be relatively painless.

Hello list,
I am attempting to upgrade my database from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7. I had the old
8.0.5 database on a SunOS 5.6 database. I performed a full cold-backup of
the database. The SA then did a rebuild on the server to upgrade the OS to
SunOS 5.8. There is no Oracle software or data on the server now.
My question is: Now that I want to go to 8.1.7, do I have to first
install 8.0.5 and bring the database up prior to installing 8.1.7 and
upgrading, OR ... can I simply install 8.1.7 and perform a migration using
8.1.7 on the old 8.0.5 datafiles? How does this work?

Thanks in advance,
  -Fred S.

Backup and Recovery

2002-02-03 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

Listmembers,

Are there any "gotchas" with restoring just one
datafile from a hot backup and applying the archive logs? Will applying the
archive logs only affect the restored datafile? For instance, if I have a hot
backup from Monday and all the archive logs to the current date and a disk
crashes which contains the datafile, can I restore just the datafile and apply
all the archive logs from Monday forward? Are changes only applied to the
restored datafile?

RE: Centralized Alert Log Monitoring

I like your plan a lot. I'd like to hear about you accomplish step 2.

I already use a centralized monitoring database to store statistical data

Dennis:

I read an article in Oracle Magazine about a technique called
'Do-it-yourself
Views' (called DIY$ views in the article). The article is at
http://www.oracle.com/oramag/webcolumns/2001/index.html?diy_dynamic.html.
If you have 8i or above this would work for you. Basically, it allows
you to read flat files with a 'SELECT' statement.

I've been thinking about a tool like this, too. My plan is something
like this:

1) Create a 'DBAMON' database instance. This instance needs current
database links to each instance you want to monitor.
2) Write the scanning algorithm in PL/SQL, and store it in the
DBAMON instance.
3) Create a DIY$ view in each database. A DIY$ view is kinda like
but not quite the flat-file select in 9i. A DIY$ view is
file-specific. So you create a view and call it something like
DIY$ALERT_LOG in each database instance, and each instance knows
where the alertSID.log file is and how to read it.
4) Create a job using DBMS_JOB in the DBAMON database to periodically
scan each instance's DIY$ALERT_LOG view and look for errors.
5) If the job finds any errors, use the UTL_SMTP package to send
you an e-mail, or beep your pager, or whatever.

The beauty of this method is that it's all done from inside Oracle,
and doesn't rely on outside factors such as WinBatch, ksh, csh, sh,
Kix, bash, or Perl (sorry, Jared). My DBAMON database is on my NT
workstation, and I can read alert_SID.log files from both NT and
UNIX operating systems.

So far, I've got step 1 done, step 3 done on a test database, and am
working on step #2. Film at 11:00 if you're interested.

Remember, YMMV!

Cheers,
Mike

Hi All,
Currently I am the only DBA for the 15 productin databases in our company.
I have written shell scripts on all database servers to parse the alert.log
file and look for Oracle errors and send page/E-mail if problems are found.
While this works it is sometimes painful to maintain - if I want to change
something I have to go to different servers to change the scripts one by
one. I figure it would be nice if we can have a centralized solution where
I can monitor alert logs remotely and don't have to hop from server to
server. Are there any tools/scripts that enable DBAs to do this? I know
OEM can do that with the Advanced Events but now you have to buy the
Diagnostics pack for that.

Either he's full of crap, or they're paying him way too much unless he has
some other managerial responsibilities. The only way to make 200K is to be a

$100!)

RE: Becoming a DBA questions

2002-01-04 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

I'm sorry ... but a little over $100K + $7K is way over what any
reasonable person would pay for a newbie DBA! I stand by my previous message
... this is full of crap unless he's doing more than DBA work! (Or the
company is EXTREMELY generous and I want on board!)

Note that the article doesn't say that he is making $150K. It says that at
his old position he was making a little over $100K, and getting Oracle
certified got him a $7K increase. Well, changing jobs and getting a 7%
increase isn't a big deal. It says that this position has a potential
maximum of $150K. I would rate the article as misleading but not an outright
lie.

I agree also, I've been working with Oracle since
version 4 and the rates here in austin,tx are anywhere
from $35/hr to $75/hr, and chances are pretty slim finding
an company willing to pay $75/hr for an senior person, and
usually its an 1099 job when it comes to $75/hr job.

 Lemme get this right.

This guy is a *new* DBA. He's making 150k and he's not
even a senior DBA, where he can make 200k?

That's all from me. I'm gonna go sulk now.

RE: A DBA's career development

2002-01-03 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

I went the ERP route after having been an Oracle DBA for 3 years in 2001
when I was recruited by SAP to become a Basis consultant even though I had
no SAP experience whatsoever (I think there were around 40 of us, many
without any previous SAP experience). They put me in boot camp and fully
trained and certified me in SAP Basis, but then the market dried up and they
were unable to keep me (and many others) billed at their ridiculous rate. As
a consequence, I was laid off along with 10 others from the new hires. (I
believe SAP America also laid off to what amounted to close to 8% of their
workforce the next month).

But, I firmly believe the shake-down was merely an adjustment and partly
due to the economy as well customers demanding more value for their money.
ERP will be around for a long time and people with those skills are very
much in demand. I've been contacted by recruiters all over the country (but
I have no desire to relocate!). I think it's very desirable to be working
for a shop running ERP, SCM, or CRM packages as well as multiple flavors of
databases because many companies are branching out and taking a best of
breed approach and the experience will prove to be valuable.

must know clients already, and they have to be comfortable working with you,
because of the impact -- they have to trust you. Hence potential higher

Re: database administration questions

2001-12-24 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

For questions 11 and 12:

All different kinds of companies use Oracle DBAs (or have
hired!) DBA's. They range from restaurant chains main offices, hospitals,
Defense Contractors, Internet Companies,Office Supply just about
any field you can think of. All of the above are currently hiring in the Denver
area, although competition is fierce! I have seen a couple junior positions, but
they require at least training and some work with Oracle. Internet companies are
still risky, but defense contractors like Raytheon and Lockheed are sure bets,
although may require security clearances(both are hiring in the Denver
area for certain specialized Oracle related positions).

Companies are extremely "picky" at the moment and are
requesting specific skill sets. For current real examples in the Denver area:
Oracle DBA with Sybase, DB2, and Access experience as well as Unix and NT
administration with a Bachelors degree. Another is Oracle DBA with SQL server
with strong C / Pro C programming skills. Another is Oracle DBA and SAP Basis
Administration experience (which I have the good fortune to have experience in
and hopefully will be hired by the company soon!). Still another is for a 10
year+ Unix Admin (HP9000 preferred) who has recent Oracle DBA experience. I
think you get the picture.

For question 13

Getting started in Oracle seems to be pure luck. For example:
A systems administrator can be asked to do some DBA duties if the main DBA
becomes too busy or leaves the company. In this case, the employer may send the
administrator to some Oracle classes and eventually he becomes a bona fide
Oracle DBA (you can say this outloud with a Redneck accent!). So, your best bet
is to work for an Oracle shop where you have a chance for exposure to Oracle,
ask to be involved with Oracle projects and Oracle training.

questions
Hi! I'm looking into getting into the field of Database
Administrating. Right now, I have experience with MS Access and have
created several databases for companies that I have worked with in the past
with Access. I'm looking for a jump in my career and the next
logical step for me, I would think, would be in database field.
However, I also have some networking knowledge (Cisco certified...).
So, I'm looking into the advantages of both fields. I have some
questions I'm not sure who to ask or where to get my answers.
But, here they go: Questions for a Database
Administrator: 1) What is your typical workday like? 2) Do
you work a lot of overtime? 3) What are the most valuable databse
programs to learn? 4) If I was to look into learning these, should I
take classes? Where would you recommend I look for classes in the Los
Angeles area? 5) What language, if any, are important (Java, XML, Visual
Basic, etc.)? 6) What programs are starting to get obsolete? 7) Is
it worth it to get vendor certifications (Microsoft, Oracle)? If so, are
there certain books that you recommend to study? 8) Is it worth it to
get a degree? If so, what specific one? 9) Are there any other
programs or technologies that are valuable to learn? 10) Are there any
associations or other groups that you belong to as a DBA? 11) What kinds
of companies hire DBAs? 12) What companies do you recommed to work for?
Know of any currently hiring? 13) With my background, what is the
best way to advance and work my way into a real DBA position? Thank
you, whom ever reads this and answers back with at least some answers to
some of the questions. I really appreciate your help!!! Please,
respond to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] smiles, me thank
you!

Re: Move data from Oracle into Access

2001-11-15 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

As long as you're planning to keep it in Oracle, the ODBC method is the way
to go. If you're trying to do something else where you need to physically
move the data easily, then you can use a select statement to create a comma
delimited file (quoted or not quoted). You can then easily use the Access
tools to import the data. You'll need to concatenate the data as follows.

SELECT  ''||column_1||','||column_2||','||column_3||','||','
FROM table
 WHERE this condition is met

This way you get exactly what you want in the format you want. You can
change the order of the columns. order of the data, etc. based on your
select statement.

Make sure you spool to a file and that your environment is set correctly to
handle the amount of data.

Wellwhen it comes to people skills I am THE winner
in my company.every Duhveloper and some went and
complained that I don't entertain their whimsies and
Fancies to CIO ( they put it much harsher, of
course..;) ).But you know ,when you have 20 database

system , then you don't have a chance to look at your

   1. How perceptive your manager is. We can't pick

 their perceptiveness. I have
had some non-technical managers that were remarkably
 perceptive.
   2. Most of us didn't become DBA's because we had
 excellent

Often we tend to concentrate on resolving the

 Recently my company

 interpreted it as more job

Robert,

Maybe, maybe not. If someone on this list can give me a lead to a position
in northern Colorado, then the extra exposure would be more than welcome. I
was laid off a couple of weeks ago and I'm finding DBA jobs in this area
hard to come by which is a completely different situation than what was
happening just ten months ago.

RE: New Oracle Install and Old Data Files

2001-10-29 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

The datafiles contain the tablespaces which contain the data for the tables,
indexes, etc. If she has all the datafiles, then she'll have access to all
the data. I haven't tried it, but this should work for the system tablespace
as well.

But does she just want the old tablespaces or does she want the tables and
indexes that were in those tablespaces? I don't think that simply
recovering the tablespaces will recover the tablespace contents, though it
is the way to start.

Doesn't Oracle have a recovery tool -- pay big bucks, they come in and
recover your database and then remove the tool -- that will do this?

Regina,

Yes there is - but you probably don't want to do it yourself if you're not
a
DBA ...

do a backup control file to trace:

alter database database backup controlfile to trace;

shut down the database and modify the sql in the file you created so it
contains the information for the tablespaces you need.

use the sql file to start up the database

hopefully everything starts ok. Can't guarantee what happens to integrity,
etc. if you don't have all the tablespaces.

Okay People,

I am not the DBA and don't have all the details but this is our situation
the way it was explained to me:

We had a server crash to the point where Unix and Oracle had to be
reinstalled, however the disks containing our data tablespaces (that is,
everything but the system tablespaces) are still good, and apparently for
several reasons, we have not had a good backup for at least a week. Is
there anyway to get a new Oracle install to recognize old tablespaces?

TIA, Regina

RE: Oracle ODBC Drivers ???

2001-10-27 Thread Randy Kirkpatrick

Faiz,

I've often run into problems with Microsoft's ODBC drivers. Use drivers from
Oracle. The error message sounds like a permissions problem but ... the
driver shouldn't be referencing RDB so it sounds like you're using the wrong
driver anyway. Get the
Oracle driver from your client software CD or download it from
http://metalink.oracle.com (as long as you have an account - and you should
or someone in your company does).
