RE: converting sybase stored procedure into oracle sp

2003-11-03 Thread Rothouse, Michael
I believe Oracle Migration Workbench will convert your Sybase
(Transact-SQL) procedures to Oracle (PL/SQL). The tool is normally used
to migrate an entire database, but I believe it gives you the
opportunity to be very selective on which objects to migrate. The tool
may require more effort than you're willing to put forward, but it's an
option.

Hi List,

Does oracle provide any utility to convert sybase stored procedure into
oracle stored procedure. In OTN I found some document which docs about
"conv72" which was distributed with oracle 7.2v. I dodn't see nything
similar in oracle 8i or 9i.

Does anyone have any idea or experience on this? Any 3rd part tool or
something?

Thanks

RE: Oracle pricing ain't going down

2003-10-26 Thread Rothouse, Michael
I realized in my hasty response that I failed to complete my
thought/question. My response should have been:

IOT and clustered indexes are not comparable to each other. Are they?

As you mention, by definition they do appear similar. I originally
thought more about how they are used as it appears (from my experiences
anyway) that clustered indexes are utilized more frequently in SQL
Server/Sybase than IOTs in Oracle. I too am curious as to when it is an
advantage or disadvantage to utilize an IOT. I read somewhere that IOTs
are best suited for lookup tables. Tables with a large number of
columns are not a very good IOT candidate. I'm just not experienced
enough in understanding why that is.

Really? I'm curious, because after reading up on Index-Organized
Tables, they sound actually pretty similar.

Clustered Index: an "ordering ruleset" for the data on the disk.
IOT: a method to store oracle rows in a b*Tree format instead of the
default rowid-controlled heap.

So, generically, both are ways you can control the physical order of the
data on your disk. Is there more to it than this simplistic
explanation?

Followup question: why not have EVERY table be an IOT in oracle?

(notwithstanding the known limitations of IOTs; no longs, no clustering)

My workplace is going in the same direction as David Mitchell's. Our
OLTP systems are Oracle, basically everything else is being (or being
considered) migrated to MSSQL2000.

I am not that familiar with SQL Server, but I believe SQL2000 has
sequences. I think MS calls it identity. I think MS also has IOT, which
they call clustered indexes. MS might even have function based indexes
with SQL2000, but not very sure. Anyone care to comment?

RE: Opinions sought on possible TOAD replacement

Management wants to standardize to a single tool for support and
maintenance purposes.  At least that's the story here.  I have heard
good things about PL/SQL Developer.  If it's an option, you could checkout
TOra (http://www.globecom.se/tora/)
which is comparable to TOAD and $100 a license on Windows.  This option
offers some middle ground anyway.

Opinions sought on possible TOAD replacement
Management have been grumbling about the cost of TOAD Professional
licenses, and have been "recommended" a cheaper product called PL/SQL
Developer by Allround Automations (available from Inthink Corporation at $150
a pop). Now, I've been to the product website, and read up on all its
features, and it basically looks like a nice enough product, but aimed
squarely at PL/SQL developers, rather than including all the DBA-oriented
goodies we find in TOAD. My first reaction is to respond by saying "fine, give
it to the developers to replace their copies of TOAD, if they find it adequate
for development, but it's not a DBA tool, so I'll keep my TOAD Xpert with DBA
  module, thanks very much!".

  But
if anyone on the list has tried both products, I'd be interested to know what
you think. Is it as usable as TOAD Professional for developers? Does it have
hidden charms which would make it a suitable replacement for DBA use? How
responsive are the product developers to requests for enhancements? Any input
  is very welcome!

Hello Gurus,

Have some disk space issues, so looking for ways to cleanup.

Please confirm that my thinking is correct.
I run the command and example output below:-
SQL> archive log list
Database log mode Archive Mode
Automatic archival Enabled
Archive destinationC:\Oracle\oracle.
Oldest online log sequence 2334
Next log sequence to archive 2338
Current log sequence 2338

I can write a script (Perl) to remove all archive files < 2334?

Much appreciate any input or confirmation.

Look at it in terms of an IF statement. Once the criteria has been met,

Good morning all

Im experimenting with partitioning a table and do not understand the
concept of the less than value

Say I have a end_date date field

01-JAN-00
01-JAN-01
01-JAN-02

and I create a range partition

(PARTITION SO00Q1 VALUES LESS THAN (TO_DATE('01-JAN-2000',
'DD-MON-')), PARTITION SO01Q1 VALUES LESS THAN
(TO_DATE('01-JAN-2001', 'DD-MON-')), PARTITION SO02Q1 VALUES LESS
THAN (TO_DATE('01-JAN-2002', 'DD-MON-'))...

My mind is thinking

SO00Q1 will have the desired < jan 2000
But SO01Q1 would have < jan 2001 and since the first partition is less
than 2000
It would include what is in partition 1

And partition 2 would have 1 and 0

Between would make more sence to me

How does the less than N work?

Thanks!

Subject: more on Oracle Standard
One

http://www.crn.com/sections/BreakingNews/dailyarchives.asp?ArticleID=44997
Oracle Standard Edition One, based on the current Oracle 9i code,
will cost $5,995 and is limited to use on one-processor servers, the company
said. Alternatively, it can be sold for $195 per named user with a minimum
of five users. Support and maintenance add an additional 22 percent of
license cost and Oracle's eBusiness discounts apply, an Oracle spokeswoman
said. So support and updates cost $899 on the one-CPU license and $214 for
five named users.
40% of list for Standard Edition. interesting.
If I were a support analyst, I'd be groaning, as here comes a new market
segment of users that no nothing about administration, that will need to be
supported prior to the rollout of 10g.
If I were an OEM such as Dell that was reselling Standard Edition
pre-installed on new servers, I'd be figuring how to makeup the markup on
the 15K USD version.
has anyone heard anything concerning grid pricing strategies?

query : select max timestamp value from table
I have multiple timestamps values  for single ip in a table, I need
the max(timestamp)  for each ip I select out.
  example:
  timestamp
  ip
  2003-09-29 13:20:23    68.209.182.42003-09-29
  13:20:44    68.209.182.42003-10-02
  12:53:38    68.209.182.42003-10-02
  12:35:06    68.75.94.1582003-10-02
  12:52:03    68.97.33.69
  Thus
select distinct ip, max(timestamp) from table
  group by ip, timestamp;

returns every timestamp value per ip.
Any ideas on how to get only the max(timestamp) for each ip?

RE: Oracle 9i and connect as sys

2003-08-16 Thread Rothouse, Michael
In Oracle9i, SYS requires connecting as a privileged user using the
sysdba parameter. This is equivalent to "connect internal" in Oracle8i
which is now obsolete in Oracle9i.

I have created my first 9i database on OS/390 v2.10.

On my Oracle 8i instance, I can connect to the database
using:

sys/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

HOWEVER, In Oracle 9i, I cannot do this. I am FORCED

to connect using:
sys/[EMAIL PROTECTED] as sysdba

I was wondering if this was a new 9i "feature"
or if it was configurable? Or just a weird thing
because of the mainframe environment.

Comments please.
