Many
thanks to everyone who responded! Looks like the outcome will be PL/SQL
Developer licenses for our developers, while I get to keep my Toad Xpert / DBA

Paul,

I've used PL/SQL Developer by Allround Automations to develop PL/SQL procs,
packages and it's fine including a well featured de-bugger. I believe that a
site licence costs $3,000. As to it being a DBA tool I'd have to say it's
not in the same league as TOAD Xpert with DBA module.

Management have been grumbling about the cost of TOAD Professional licenses,
and have been recommended a cheaper product called PL/SQL Developer by
Allround Automations (available from Inthink Corporation at $150 a pop).
Now, I've been to the product website, and read up on all its features, and
it basically looks like a nice enough product, but aimed squarely at PL/SQL
developers, rather than including all the DBA-oriented goodies we find in
TOAD. My first reaction is to respond by saying fine, give it to the
developers to replace their copies of TOAD, if they find it adequate for
development, but it's not a DBA tool, so I'll keep my TOAD Xpert with DBA
module, thanks very much!.

But if anyone on the list has tried both products, I'd be interested to know
what you think. Is it as usable as TOAD Professional for developers? Does it
have hidden charms which would make it a suitable replacement for DBA use?
How responsive are the product developers to requests for enhancements? Any
input is very welcome!

RE: RE: Opinions sought on possible TOAD replacement

2003-10-16 Thread Patterson, Mark
Hi,

I'll second Chris' statement. I found PL/SQL Developer to be a great and
inexpensive PL/SQL development tool. Its debugger is especially good. In
fact from a development perspective I found it to be far superior to TOAD.
Have no idea about support and consideration of user suggestions as I had no
issues to report.
However as its name suggests it is purely a PL/SQL development tool and not
an administration tool, but then I don't think its trying to be the latter.
Would recommend you stick with TOAD for administration, I don't know of
anything else significantly cheaper out there to replace TOAD and any small
licensing savings will be lost to lower productivity during the learning
curve anyway.

Regards,
Mark.

FYI... Golden is a query tool (and a damn good one)... In my
opinion, it's what SQL Worksheet should be... Simple to use and
fast... The PL/SQL editor from Benthicis separate tool called
PLEdit... It's ok but not great... Like Golden it is quick and
simple... But, if you are looking for advanced functionality then I would
definitely go with another solution... I took a peek at PL/SQL Developer a
few months agoand thought it was a nice tool... Especially for the
price... That being said, I use PLEdit for my own use...I buy
my own tools and don't do enough to justify the cost...

Management wants to standardize to a single tool for support and
maintenance purposes. At least that's the story here. I have heard
good things about PL/SQL Developer. If it's an option, you could checkout
TOra (http://www.globecom.se/tora/)
which is comparable to TOAD and $100 a license on Windows. This option
offers some middle ground anyway.

toad on linux

2003-10-03 Thread becker . bill

Hello,

It appears that Toad does not run on the Linux desktop, or
at least the system requirements mention only Windows platforms.

Does any one know of any toad-like tools that do run on Linux?
Specifically, Red Hat Linux? The server would be a 9.2.0.4 database
also running on Red Hat Linux AS 2.1, or the soon-to-be-released
Enterprise Linux 3.0.

Also, does Oracle Enterprise Manager run on Linux?
Thanks to any responders.

There is a TOAD like producty called TORA that runs on linux. Google

I'm a dedicated TOAD user, so would steer you in that direction. We used
SQL Navigator years ago, before we moved to TOAD. SQL Navigator is not a
bad product; and I haven't kept up on the new releases. I'm sure it's grown
a lot since I last used it. But overall, I just prefer TOAD's user
interface and way of doing things.

TOAD has a very active and dedicated user community, and a beta program
that's open to any registered TOAD owner. If you suggest a new feature in
the beta program, it may literally appear in the next beta version (released
twice a week). All of TOAD's developers are active participants on the
list. TOAD is very much a user-driven product. (I don't see any equivalent
activity for SQL Navigator.)

But it should be easy to decide for yourself. Both TOAD and SQL Navigator
have fully-functional limited-time demos available on their web site
(www.quest.com). Download them both and have at it!

RE: ORA-03115 (TOAD question!!)

2003-08-01 Thread Charu Joshi
Jared,

Snip from my original post

   However, I have set the
default home to ORA_8i_HOME(which has Net8) using the 'Home
Selector' utility. Also, TOAD is reading the TNSNames.Ora file
from this home, so should be using Net8 rather than SQL*Net.

/Snip from my original post

The question is, is it TOAD that uses the LAST_HOME entry, or is
it Oracle itself? TOAD documentation suggests it's Oracle.

Reading LAST_HOME entry to decide which version of SQLNet to use
just doesn't sound right (can't see any logic). I think
DEFAULT_HOME setting should always be used. I read note
Note:73963.1 regarding this but it doesn't mention this behaviour.

Maybe I will look for a higher version of TOAD and see how it
goes.

Regards,
Charu.

You may find it easier to just run the Oracle Home Selector
that appears in the Startup-Programs-Oracle Installation
Products
menu.

It has the benefit of also modifying the PATH variable.

   Hi,

I have Oracle 8i Enterprise Server, Oracle 9i Enterprise

remote/local databases through TOAD 6.5 (which supports LOBs)

I think that this error is due to the limitation of CLOBs in

Can

RE: ORA-03115 (TOAD question!!)

2003-08-01 Thread Jared Still

Sorry, I must have been shooting from the hip.

Not taking enough time to read more carefully.

The LAST_HOME is likely being read by TOAD.

Could be that TOAD stores the Oracle home it
was last initialized with, compares it to the
current on on subsequent startups, and tries
to revert by using LAST_HOME.

Take a look at any ini files or TOAD registry
entries.

2003-07-31 Thread Jesse, Rich
rant

Man, I hope not. The complete reversal of the security in TOAD from deny
all / grant some to grant all / deny some in 7.3 made maintenance a
nightmare (we're stuck at v7.2 for this reason). Security granted by
default is not security -- it's a welcome mat with the key tucked
underneath. This problem has been compounded by the lack of version
specified in the call to DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO.SET_MODULE that TOAD does.
If it had this, I could use a logon trigger to weed out non-standard
versions of TOAD on our production DBs. I'm not looking to hamper our devs,
just help prevent them or TOAD from making happy accidents.

So now, if the freeware version's updated, I'll have zero control over who
uses what version of TOAD against our DBs. And if the freeware version is
using the new and improved security-less model, it's an open door.

Also, this version is not free. It's listed at just under

Hi,

It
worked!! As suggested by Raj, I browsed the TOAD help on SQL*Net installation
and found out this piece of information:

**
When Oracle connects, it will look in ALL_HOMES for the
"LAST_HOME" value, which in this case is zero "0". It appends zero to
"HOME" to produce "HOME0", then it looks in HKLM\Software\ORACLE\HOME0 for the
ORACLE_HOME value.
**

I
modified the LAST_HOME key to point tothe 8i HOME and restarted TOAD and
was able to query CLOBs successfully.

Thanks
a lot!!

You may find it easier to just run the Oracle Home Selector
that appears in the Startup-Programs-Oracle Installation Products
menu.

It has the benefit of also modifying the PATH variable.

It's a TOAD issue. It's fixed in one of the v7.x versions. The current
supported version is 7.5.

  Hi,

I have Oracle 8i Enterprise Server, Oracle 9i Enterprise Server
and Oracle 7.3.4 client on my NT4 machine. When I connect to
remote/local databases through TOAD 6.5 (which supports LOBs) and
try to fetch a CLOB value I get the 'ORA-03115: Unsupported
  network datatype or representation'.

I think that this error is due to the limitation of CLOBs in
SQL*Net 2.3 which comes with 7.3.4 client. However, I have set the
default home to ORA_8i_HOME(which has Net8) using the 'Home
Selector' utility. Also, TOAD is reading the TNSNames.Ora file
from this home, so should be using Net8 rather than SQL*Net. I
have Googled and searched Metalink, but got no clearcut reply. Can
you please suggest any way to rectify it?

  Thanks regards,
  Charu.

7.6 is BETA. 7.5.2 is the current release. New betas appear frequently.
Also, this version is not free. It's listed at just under $800 US. The
freeware version is v6.x, which has the LOB bug, among a host of others.

RE: TOAD vs BMC's XRAY

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse, Rich
OK, I got the e-mail to try a trial of DBXray from BMC. Crap, I tell you.
Crap. Crap, crap, crap. To be truthful, I'm not sure how much we pay for
Spotlight, but for $2500/user, DBXray has a LOT to be desired.

I've apparently been spoiled by Quest's Spotlight interface. After a
15-minute trial of DBXray (granted, that's a little slim), here's what my
kneejerk of what I see to be the advantages of Spotlight on Oracle (SoO)
over DBXray (DBX):

1) It's in freakin Java. 60MB of mem to launch and it's slw, even on a
2.4Ghz w/512MB. Half of this is a Java Windohs service.

2) It doesn't understand ONAMES, so I would need to manually maintain yet
another repository of Oracle Network connections.

3) SoO's color scheme is configurable. DBX seems to be fixed on a scheme of
light gray on light blue. Very low contrast and I can't imagine this is
viewable by color-blind folk.

4) SoO's interface is scalable. DBX's main dashboard is fixed in size.

5) No menu access to drilldowns in DBX. Difficult for neophyte or
occasional users to locate the correct image map on the main dashboard of
DBX.

6) Session drilldown has fixed set of columns in DBX. Tune button only
provides weak text-only explain plan. SoO provides two different methods
for doing explain plans out-of-the box, and is expandable with optional
software like the-product-formerly-known-as-SQLab.

7) Very few options for data display in DBX. SoO, for example, allows you
to turn off BCHR collection as well as configure which columns to return
from V$SESSION for the session drilldown (see #6).

Man, there's so much more I don't want to take more time on it. SoO is
clearly a *far* superior product when it comes to instance monitoring and
tuning. I tried thinking of a single advantage of DBX over SoO, and I can't
come up with one.

Now to see if DBX will actually uninstall...

I haven't used DBXray (yet -- maybe it's not an automated
process to download a trial?), but I don't feel TOAD is the
best at DB administration, especially for performance
tuning/monitoring. Then again, it's been awhile since I've
used TOAD's optional DBA module, since it's no longer
available in the beta. For development, I think it's the
best, especially at US $795/user. I've been a TOAD user
since v4, when it was Jim McDaniel's freeware baby.

For tracing into running SQLs I prefer using Quest's
Spotlight. Aside from a slick interface (makes impressive
screen shots for management-types), it is very easy to drill
down into problem areas, like resource hogging sessions you
mention. I still think that any tool requires knowledge of
the underlying queries they use to fully understand what the
tool is telling you, I just happen to prefer Spotlight's interface.

If I ever get the email for the DBXray trial from BMC, I'll
let you know what I think of that compared to the others.

great review :)
I told them the same thing, but they're developer driven. The customer using
the product comes 2nd. A flashing widget is more important to them than
useful data to the DBA. The slowness has a been an issue since web dba. That
required 256mb of ram. I asked if they were going to include memory and they
said everybody runs their desktop with 500meg of ram or even better They'll
need to upgrade. :))

Hi List !

My problem with TOAD was fixed.I do not call it great.
Solution Obtained:
1. Reverted back to TOAD 7.2 (IT still did not work even though I was
able to connect thru SQL *PLUS)
2. I took a back-up of my database and ran the catexp.sql script. I got
a few warnings but all my data dictionary objects were re-created.
3. I am able to connect to my 9.2 db thru TOAD !!

Thanks one and all!

 Subject: Problem with TOAD

 Hi List,

I am facing a strange problem with TOAD (ver 7.3.0.0).

I am not able to log onto my Oracle database server ( 9.2.0.1.0) thru
TOAD. I am getting ORA-00980: synonym translation is no longer
valid. I do not know how this correlates with this error while
 connecting. I am
able to connect to any other database thru TOAD.
I am able to connect to my database using SQL* PLUS but my
 comfort level
with TOAD is high that I do not want to revert to SQL * PLUS. ;)

The things that I will list out are :
 1. Tried running the TOADPREP.sql from SQL*PLUS. The script goes thru
fine without any problems. 2. Nothing has happnened to my PC/Database
since the last time I logged
in to my machine. Very normal behavior.
 3. I can desribe all my toad specific tables from SQL* PLUS.
 4. The strange thing now (after running TOADPREP.sql) is that i can
access all user tables but not dba tables(dynamic performance views)
 5. Stopped and restarted the servies but to no effect
 6. Even reinstalled TOAD but to no effect.
 7. I have checked the trace files, seems fine to me.

Even though this issue is specific to TOAD, plz help me on this.
I am in touch with the support also but I cannot wait for 1 day for
 their reply.
 Any pointers?

Re: Problem with TOAD

2003-05-30 Thread rgaffuri
Cause: The synonym used is based on a table, view, or synonym that no longer exists.

Action: Replace the synonym with the name of the object it references or re-create the
synonym so that it refers to a valid table, view, or synonym.

looks to me like one of the data dictionary views that toad is trying to use no longer
exists or after the data dictionary synonym was created the object no longer exists.
wierd, i thought synonyms were deleted when their corresponding objects where dropped.

best way to fidn the problem is to an anti-join on the synonyms to the data dictionary
views. you will need to use a wildcard for the v$ views.

im curious about this. please post what you find.

Re: Problem with TOAD

2003-05-29 Thread Doug
Don't know if this helps but there are a handful of bugs with ORA-980's..with 9i
Some of them are inaccessible. I ran into this problem and switched the
synonym from private to public per Oracle's advice and got around it for the
time being until I could put on the .3 patchset.. or was it from public to
private? Not sure.
I still haven't gotten the .3 patchset on either. The symptom was that a
synonym appears valid by any stretch until it is accessed by a procedure and
then the error is thrown. To track down these problems I put each synonym in a
3 line procedure that just did a select count.Maybe Toad is trying to do
something other than make a simple connection.

Hi List,

I am facing a strange problem with TOAD (ver 7.3.0.0).

I am not able to log onto my Oracle database server ( 9.2.0.1.0) thru
TOAD. I am getting ORA-00980: synonym translation is no longer valid.
I do not know how this correlates with this error while connecting. I am
able to connect to any other database thru TOAD.
I am able to connect to my database using SQL* PLUS but my comfort level
with TOAD is high that I do not want to revert to SQL * PLUS. ;)

The things that I will list out are :
1. Tried running the TOADPREP.sql from SQL*PLUS. The script goes thru
fine without any problems.
2. Nothing has happnened to my PC/Database since the last time I logged
in to my machine.

Satya Prakash

TOAD

2003-02-05 Thread Ehresmann, David
List,

I have a developer that I want to grant access to change another schema
owner's packages in TOAD. I have granted connect, resource, and roles which
incorporate DML on the tables and execute on the packages. When he goes
into TOAD he can see the package spec but not the package body. How do I
set up his privs to allow him to make changes to another's package bodies
thru TOAD?

thanks,

Same as Oracle privs
...

If you give execute,
other user can see only package spec, if you grant 'create any procedure' they
can see the package body/procedure/function body as
well.

* to see
procedure/function/package spec you need on of
 1. execute (if
grant is made to public)
2. execute
any procedure
 3. create any
procedure

* to see package body
you need "create any procedure"

The ROWID parameter is used by the Oracle ODBC driver (and I assume
everyone else's ODBC OLE DB drivers for Oracle) whenever the driver needs
to provide functionality like scrolling a resultset (jump to row 1.000.000
without going through the other 999.999) or to update the data in the
resultset. In these cases, the driver know that the ROWID will uniquely
identify the row, so it just has to remember the set of ROWID's and it can
call up any row. Similarly, if it needs to update a row, it can put a
'where ROWID=' clause in the update statement to ensure that only one row
gets updated.

Any links to the info would be helpfull in understanding the query.

Also, you might try turning off the 'editable queries' in the options. That causes it to do a select rowid, * from table, so that once you edit the grid, it will use the rowid to go back and actually make the update to the data.

Ron,

Are you using VB with ADO to return XML? ADO does some mighty strange stuff
under the covers. If so, then I would guess that this is the cuplrit.

My other guess is the VB is doing it in preparation to perform an update
using the ROWID column in a where clause.

Seema, you dont give us enough information, so I am
not sure what your problem is, I think you dont have
the configuration of your DB in your TNSNAMES.ora file
in your desktop, look at your ORACLE_HOME dir and then
in /net80/admin (oracle 8.0.x), just configure there
your BD and then choose which one to use at TOAD
SERVER LOGIN window, (the one that shows up when you
open TOAD)

I hope this helps you!

Clob, toad, and a trigger not working

2002-04-25 Thread Shaw John-P55297

I've encountered a weird error (no it's not my boss). It's on W2K and
happens on 8.1.6 an 9i.

I've got two tables with clobs
CREATE TABLE CLOB_TEST (
  EIDNUMBER,
  CLOB_TEST  CLOB ) ;
--
CREATE TABLE CLOB_TEST_AFTER (
  EIDNUMBER,
  CLOB_TEST  CLOB ) ;
and created the following trigger:

CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER CLOB_TEST_AI AFTER INSERT ON CLOB_TEST
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE

   buffer   long;
   len  number(10);
   eid  number;
   clobber  clob;
   sql_stmt varchar2(100);

BEGIN
 eid := :NEW.EID;
 clobber := :NEW.CLOB_TEST;
 len :=  dbms_lob.getlength(clobber);
 DBMS_LOB.READ(clobber,len,1,buffer);
 insert into clob_test_after (eid, clob_test) values (eid, buffer);
END;

This trigger works fine when I do an insert into the first table from
sqlplus
but when I do an insert from TOAD or another third party application I get
the following error messages:
ora-21560 argument 2 is null, invalid, or out of range
ora-06512 at sys.dbms_lob line 648
ora-06512 at clob_test_ai line 17
ora-04088 error during execution of trigger
clob_test_ai

Anyone know why this error occurs from third party stuff and not from
sqlplus - or better yet a work around?

Is it possible to remove default (TOAD users)

2002-04-12 Thread Shaw John-P55297

8.1.6 NT TOAD
I have a developer assign a default value to a column, and they don't want
it anymore. I can reset the default to be NULL (the default default so to
speak) but they are able to see the fact that there is a default in TOAD on
that column and of course the other columns don't have a default of NULL on
them so they would like it removed - it makes them nervous. Is there any way
to just get rid of the default showing up without deleting and re-adding the
column? Should I tell them not to meddle anymore?

TOra - Toolkit For Oracle is an open source clone of TOAD for Windows and
Linux. http://www.globecom.se/tora/ It has many of the same features and a
better price(free). :) I have been using the Linux version for quite a
while and am very pleased with it. I would be interested in hearing from
people using the Windows version.

RE: TOAD Software???

2002-01-14 Thread Kimberly Smith

We use it. I really like it. I also got it purchased for the developers.
Small footprint, reasonably priced, new features added all the time, not
a lot of bugs.

Hi DBAs,

Not sure, whether this has already been discussed on
list. If so, then please mail me directly instead of
mailing to list.

I just wanted to check how good TOAD software is. I am
evaluating this software for my company.

Has anyone bought it?

Will appreciate quick response.

Thanks in Advance,

Regards,
RS.

RE: TOAD Software???

2002-01-14 Thread schmoldt

TOAD is the one Oracle tool I would refuse to give up. We used to use
SQL*Navigator, and I much prefer TOAD. It has a well-thought-out interface,
and has useful features for both DBA and Developer. All of our developers
and DBAs use it.

The support from Toadman and his development group is outstanding. There is
a very active mail list (http://www.egroups.com/list/toad) and an active
beta program open to ALL registered TOAD owners.

I can't recommend TOAD highly enough.

Warning: if you are offended by fogeyism or curmudgeonly attitudes, you
should not read the rest of this message.

Thank you.

As for TOAD vs SQL*Navigator, I would certainly agree with you there. TOAD
has a much better interface.

As for the tools that I would steadfastly refuse to give up, sorry, TOAD
doesn't make the cut.

Tools that do make the cut:

SQL*Plus
vi or vim
korn shell
Perl
Guiness
Yukon Jack
Bombay Saphire Gin
Martini and Rossi Vermouth
Lagavulin Single Malt

Not necessarily in that order.

Jared,

I find it somewhat curious that while the first four tools suggest a
preference for the home brew approach, the last five are certainly
third party tools. I'm certainly with you on the first four, but I
think the others need more research. If you are ever in Dallas, we'll
have to go to a lab and compare results

Yukon Jack !? I would never have guessed it.

Lagavulin huh? If only I had known. I am partial to Dalwhinnie myself.

Oh I absolutely agree on the other important tools, though I admit you did
have me wondering what the Guiness software suite had to offer.

As for TOAD, I would definately give it a thumbs up. I used to work for a
client that owned a copy. I admit it was the GUI tool that made me
begrudgingly begin to accept GUI tools.

Re: Re[2]: TOAD Software???

2002-01-14 Thread Jared Still

While the first four are required low level tools, those
following are indeed outsourced from a third party.

Though considered by many to be used only in case
of emergency, I find that modest application of these tools
tends to relieve situations that might otherwise induce panic.

Overuse on the other hand, tends to throw a wrench in the
works and complicate issues, as third party tools are
wont to do.

Look at TORA, for the cost ($0.00) it is a nice tool ... not way too many
