Re: Any Oracle 9i Data Guard limitations specific to Linux implementations?

2004-01-08 Thread Tanel Poder
I've done sync physical DG on linux (over direct gigabit ethernet). Didn't
encounter any serious problems.
With physical standby you can forget about nologging operations -> use alter
database force logging or at least on tablespace level for important
tablespaces.
Also I set LGWR running on higher priority on primary in order to transfer
log records to standby with smallest latency.

Go with async if your business requirements allow you to lose few bits of
data in case of disaster on primary (especially when servers aren't
connected via low-latency high-throughput network).

And logical standby is only a prototype yet.

Tanel.

Re: Any Oracle 9i Data Guard limitations specific to Linux

2004-01-08 Thread Carel-Jan Engel
Hi William,

During the past 2,5 years I've been responsible for appr 20 DG
installations, varying form 9.0.1 to 9.2.0.4, most Physical Standby.
Logical Standby is not ready for High Availability purposes yet, but
Physical Standby definitely is. The biggest production systems I've worked
on were severel hundreds of Megabytes, most of them on Solaris. The biggest
Linux site I've worked with was around 100 MB. Today I configured a Linux
RH installation for one of my customers.

No experience with DG in combination with raw partitions.

I'll send you the materials I created for several classed I tought on DG,
and would like to stay in touch with you about your experiences.

Regards, Carel-Jan

I have heard that there is a problem with performance but... if you get to
5.2 with ML01, that is supposed to resolve the issue.

If anyone knows differently... I would appreciate the knowledge too.

Re: Oracle 9i reports

2003-12-18 Thread Ron Thomas

This was true even for 6i after about patchset 6, IIRC. Many notes on metalink
concerning this.

In a nutshell..
1. install VNC
2. start a vnc server at a specific screen address, such as 11
3. add a "export DISPLAY=host:11" to the .profile of the reports server.
4. go have a beer.

I haven't installed Oracle 9i on Fedora, but it appears the installer can't find the
shared library indicated. Perhaps this will help:

On my Fedora Core Release 1 laptop, /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 is a symlink
that points to /usr/lib/libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so, which is installed by the
compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118 package. Make sure you have that installed (should come
with Fedora) and see if that fixes the problem.

rpm -q compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118 should tell you whether it's installed or not.

Hi,

I am running into a problem installing Oracle 9i on Fedora. I get
the following error when starting the Oracle installer.

error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I figured I would ask if anybody has worked through a solution
before I start pounding away on the same wheel.

Thanks much,

Hi All,

I am running a big batch reporting program that does way too much SQL (but
that's another story)
and when I profile the trace file apart from one pice of SQL all the others
are only doing 1 block reads.
As you can see from the example below it did 63,209 physical IO calls and
they were all for one block only
Even though it's via Primary Key why doesn't Oracle get even more than one
block per read if the index range scan is long?
This is just an example from about 45 SQL statements that have the one block

2003-12-01 Thread Daniel Fink

Ian,
Index Range Scans are single block i/o (fast full scans use multiblock
i/o). This is why you are seeing the high number of single block reads.
If you want to use multiblock reads, use full table scans or fast full
index scans. Be warned, response time could drop dramatically (along with
your employee rating and salary...).
The real question is "Does this have any negative impact on response
time for the businesses most important processes?"

Is it possible to run Forms6i in client-server mode against an Oracle
9.2.0.4 database? One of the developers where I work flatly states that
Forms 6i (in any mode) doesn't work against (any) Oracle 9i and I cannot
find any specific information either confirming or denying this assertion.
Searches on Metalink and Google both came up with nothing of relevance. I
would assume that with an Oracle8i client it shouldn't be a problem, but I
haven't worked with Forms at all since v3.0 and she is adamant that it is
simply impossible - with no explanation of why.

We have successfully used forms 6i against Oracle 9i databases (9iR1

Just a note that 9iAS Rel1 comes with forms6i.
Only in 9iAS rel 2 and above are forms 9i used.

Just make sure the correct forms 6i patchset has been applied that
fixes the
relevant forms bugs.

Hi Don

We have moved to oracle 9i (9.2.0.3) and are running Forms6i without any
problem. According to the Metalink certification matrix Forms 6i patch
set 13 and above are certified with Oracle 9.2 (or 9i). The matrix does
not distinguish between minor releases of Oracle (i.e. 9.2.0.3 and
9.2.0.4).

It is not finished because at the end I miss files (like runInstaller). So it looks like a corrupt file on technet.

Anybody been succesful doing the same lately??

init 3 is useful for updating a system, as it eliminates a lot of
extraneous stuff that you may not want running.

Or even init 1 (single user mode ) if necessary.

For some reason, my habit is to use the init commands (init 6 for example)
to restart workstations, and /etc/shutdown for workstations.

Is there any reason the list is aware of to prefer one over the other?

Basically the main difference is:

init can change you among levels... while shutdown no!
and... shutdown cannot take you into levels 2 and 3.

check the -i option for the shutdown command.

Solaris, I believe, uses the System V shutdown command. Although you
could use init to switch to the appropriate reboot runlevel, the typical
way to reboot a Solaris system is:

# /etc/shutdown -i 6 -g 0 -y

I'll assume you haven't mucked with your inittab.

(This provides no grace period for users to log off. Adjust -g
appropriately.)

RE: Import/Export file is limited to 2,147,483,647 Bytes for Oracle 9i on Sun Solaris (32-bit)?

2003-10-06 Thread Gary W. Parker
Another option is to list multiple *dmp files in the FILE parameter; ie
FILE=(file1.dmp, file2.dmp, ...)
along with the FILESIZE parameter. When the file1.dmp reaches the size specified in
FILESIZE, then file2.dmp
is created, and so on. The trick is to list enough files in the FILE parameter to
complete the export.

Yes, I have a 4.5G export file on a Solaris box.

Have your System Admininstrator check to ensure the filesystem you are
writing the export file to is configured for "large files".

Once you've verified that, then you can export (or import) via a named
pipe. See Note #30528.1 or one of many other Metalink notes. If named
pipes are not sufficient for your export you may also use the
combination of named pipe and "file= & filesize=" parameters.

PC is AMD Athlon/windows 2000
I've downloaded Oracle 9i release 2 from technet.

When running setup.exe I have the following message
The Java RunTime Environment was nout found at:
C:\DOCUME~\ADMINI~\LOCALS~1\Temp\OraInstall\jre\bin\jawaw.exe. Hence the
Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
Please visit

Then, I've removed all Oracle stuff (OWB, Oracle 8i,..) that I had following
metalink note.
I've cleaned the path, the registry, the environment variables,...
It still doesn't install, even if I run from ../install/win32/setup.exe

Any ideas ?

the latter's due to it being Acrobat and not a PowerlessPoint... :)

RE: Oracle 9i and DB2 8.1 comparison article

2003-09-10 Thread Mladen Gogala
Title: Message

Let me quote the conclusion of the article:
ConclusionIt is not true that Oracle 9i
Database is better than DB2 Universal Database v8.1or vice versa. Both products
can be used to build stable and efficient systemsand the stability and
effectiveness of your applications and databases depend rather upon the
experience of the database developers and database administratorthan the
database's provider.
This is feature by feature comparison, made by using marketing
materials from both companies as  the main source. The purpose of this
comparison is quite
unclear to me. It underlines the differences in the approach
between marketing teams from IBM and Oracle and will not be helpful to magazine
reading
damagement in deciding what database to buy. Marketing materials
are, as expected, grossly inaccurate, so in comparison with SQL Server there is
statement that maximum row size for SQL Server is 8036 characters, which would
render it completely useless, while the maximum row size for Oracle9i was set
to  255000
which would directly
contradict to the existence of LONG columns, which as we all
know, can go to 2GB. Author, nevertheless, puts this information in the
"comparison".
The conclusion is the same at the bottom of all 3 comparisons
and that is that it's not true that one database is better then another, which
is
obviously not true.  What is more, open source alternatives
like Postgres and MySQL were left out of  the comparison and they are
rapidly gaining ground,
especially Postgres, which supports transactions and can use
perl as it's internal scripting language.

Vivek - This subject has been discussed on this list from time to time. You
can go to Google and search for Oracle-L "SQL Server" and variations to pull
up previous discussions. Awhile back eWeek magazine did an extensive
benchmark. It is a little date, but make sure you re-read that for insights.
They also had a recent article discussing the shortcomings of their

Hi

Can anyone help me with Oracle 9i database - ie 9.2.0.3 where there are
issues such as memory leaks and other issues or bugs. Has anyone doing data
warehousing or transaction processing encountered any issues with this
version of Oracle and what have you done to fix it.

I have found errors with using FOR CURSOR loops - encountered problems with
it where it took extremely long to run due to a memory leak in Oracle. We
had to apply a patch to fix this. HAs anyone encountered any other problems
as DBAs or Developers?

I have created my first 9i database on OS/390 v2.10.

On my Oracle 8i instance, I can connect to the database
using:

sys/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

HOWEVER, In Oracle 9i, I cannot do this. I am FORCED

to connect using:
sys/[EMAIL PROTECTED] as sysdba

I was wondering if this was a new 9i "feature"
or if it was configurable? Or just a weird thing
because of the mainframe environment.

Comments please.

Thanks in Advance

RE: Oracle 9i and connect as sys

2003-08-18 Thread Babette Turner-Underwood
The security is not as bad as it sounds.
The patch is to release major software and the
user gets prompted to enter the password. It
is not stored any place (just UNIX variables
during the running of the release). The
software upgrades are released once every
six months to year.

Not all patches require SYS access. Only
in earlier releases that granted access to SYS.
However, when I build a new environment,
I needed to run through the entire set of patches.

Even if I use SYSTEM to grant access to SYS
objects, I would need to go back and change
the scripts to refer to SYS objects instead
of currently connected users. And we are not
supposed to go back and change scripts that
have been released already :-(

But we are migrating all of the application
to the mainframe and none of the original
release scripts will work soon any way :-(

At least as part of the move, we have been
going through getting rid of the public synonyms
and public grants the previous DBA put in place :-)

I will have to try that GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE
and let you know how it goes.

Babette,

This is how database security unravels. Pretty soon, the password to SYS is
embedded everywhere, used everywhere, and everyone knows it. Thus, the DBA
ends up with the pager and responsibility for fixing stuff, but everyone
else can cause that pager to go off with a stupid goof at 3:00am where they
shouldn't have been able to goof up.

It sounds like the patching utility only needs a couple privileges, but
instead all of the goddess-like privileges of SYS are provided. Pretty
soon, it seems normal for people and programs to connect as SYS on a regular
basis. And so it goes...

A couple alternatives:

* use 9i "GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE" to let another account have
an incredible amount of authority, which is OK if you don't know
exactly what permissions will be needed ahead of time...
* grant specific permissions WITH GRANT OPTION to another user, a
more focused approach than the shotgun "GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE"
approach, provided you know what permissions will be needed ahead
of time. This has been around forever...
* encapsulate such actions within a stored procedure owed by SYS,
which may seem cumbersome but allows all kinds of control. Not just
"who can do what" (which is basically what permissions and roles
provide), but also "during what time", "from where", "from what
  program", "from what location", etc...

Just this Friday, I was wrapping up an installation engagement and one of
the last things we did was change all the passwords. Standard practice.
Immediately, one of the development managers comes boiling out of his office
screaming "Who changed the passwords to SYS and SYSTEM?". I 'fessed up and
asked him why he thought he needed it. He turned red and snarled that he
just needed it and never you mind, turned on his heel and went in the CIO's
office, then came boiling back with approval. We turned it over, and within
5 minutes I logged back onto the system and saw SQL*Plus running with the
SYS/SYSTEM password visible to anyone and everyone who can run the UNIX "ps"
command. I looked at the scripts he was running, noticed that all he wanted
SYS/SYSTEM for was to create PUBLIC SYNONYMs. I left to catch my plane...

Hope this helps...

Hi!

Note that if you set your init.ora parameter o7_dictionary_accessibility to
true, then you can connect as sys *without* sysdba or sysoper. But setting
this parameter to true (old behaviour) isn't a good idea anymore, but might
work for patching & maintenance type of work.

First off, you should not be connecting as sys on a regular basis, so making it harder
is a good thing. Makes us think about what we're doing. Anyway, my experience is
that whenever you want to connect as SYS you have to do so AS SYSDBA.

CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM is a permission I'll give away freely, even to a PHB.
It's DROP PUBLIC SYNONYM that really needs some thought...

Installing Oracle in a shop that has never used UNIX or Oracle before is
never cheap, whether I do it or not. This particular shop was
OpenVMS/Ingres coming into Solaris/Oracle, so the real expense will come
after their current staff is fully retrained and discovers Monster.com...

A manager who has to create public synonyms himself! Ordinarily I would have
had nothing but pure respect for the man who is obviously such a grease
monkey; but he proved to be just a monkey.

Damagement title with sys password; boy how I hate to be DBA there! No, to

Re: Oracle 9i and connect as sys

2003-08-17 Thread Tim Gorman

-Tim

Re: Oracle 9i and connect as sys

2003-08-17 Thread Arup Nanda
Babette,

You can still achieve the objective using SYSTEM, which does not require a
SYSDBA connection. Or for that matter any user with DBA role. The trick is a
new privilege named "grant any object privilege"; any user with that
privilege can grant anything on objects owned by other schema. If you don't
want to use SYSTEM for this, you could create a special user and grant only
that system privilege directly to it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Oracle 9i and connect as sys

2003-08-17 Thread Mladen Gogala
Well, you don't need to log on as sys to do that. There is a
new privilege in 9i (granted to DBA role, of course) called
"GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE", which enables the DBA to grant
object privileges on objects belonging to other user. You can
easily log in as "system" and grant select on sys.dba_views or
whatever other table you need to grant.

In Oracle9i, SYS requires connecting as a privileged user using the
sysdba parameter. This is equivalent to "connect internal" in Oracle8i
which is now obsolete in Oracle9i.

This is a feature of 9i. using SYS you have to always use "as sysdba "
same thing on Windows and Solaris at least and I am sure it is all other

Object programming with Oracle 9i

2003-08-16 Thread tjambu_fatcity

hi object/relational developers

Please bear with me if I am not using the right terminology.

Am intending on using java to access to the underlying relational tables.
Was thinking of exposing the database to java using Object views over the relational
views.
Trying to isolate the complexity of data access in the DB from the developers.

The questions I have are

1. Updating DB using a java obj

I know it is possible to do the following:
UPDATE Addr set street = JObj.street,
city = JObj.city

But can you do something like
UPDATE Addr set Addr value = JObj

2. Updating only dirty data

Given an object , is it possible to update the database with
only dirty data without comparing every attribute/column and traversing
thru the object?

Any comments or help is appreciated.

RE: Oracle 9i refuses to allow client connection -- I need

2003-07-28 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS

Technet (aka. otn) is good, but sometimes it helps to have a book help
you get started. Consider picking up a copy of Oracle9i DBA 101.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0072224746/qid=1059408389/sr=8
-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-8977984-5541669?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
Don't worry too much about Windows vs. Unix. There is very little with
Oracle that is Windows or Unix specific. Most of the differences relate to
file naming and starting/stopping the instance. Pretty much any of the books
give you the syntax for each system where there is a difference.
Actually, you are probably fortunate with your training being delayed for
a few months. The class covers so much in a few days that if you are really
new to Oracle it is hard to comprehend everything. By messing with it for a
few months, the class will make a lot more sense.

Thanks for the encouragement and yes I would like to know some of the good
Oracle 101 under a windows environment books. I'm pretty certain that my
approved training will be funded with year-end money, but that means the
earliest I'll get to class is in late October or early November.

Hope you don't mind me bugging you all a while until I get squared away.

2003-07-28 Thread Ron Rogers
Stephen.
OTN is the abreviation for Oracle Technology Network
http://otn.oracle.com/. It is a source and startup point for
documentation, softrare , news, and other Oracle related "stuff". I
would surf the site to see what is available for the Oracle applications
you have and to locate the documentation that you might need.
I would also suggest that you get a MetaLink account
http://metalink.oracle.com. Metalink is the Oracle site where an
Oracle answered forums exist, patches reside, cetrification is listed,
ITAR's are created, etc. If you have an Oracle support contract you
should have access to the MetaLink site without any problems.

Re: Oracle 9i refuses to allow client connection -- I need

2003-07-25 Thread Ron Rogers
Stephen,
I also would like to extend a warm welcome to the world of Oracle. I
hope that you find it interesting and challenging and rewarding.
I would suggest that you get a head start on your training so you
won't be overwhelmed when you attend, by acquiring some of the "Oracle
101" books that are available on the market. They are a valuable
resource that I refer to constantly as I can't remember as much as I use
to.
I don't mean to slight any of the excellent authors that are on this
list by not listing their works here. I am sure that if you asked for
references you will be supplied with a list that will be quite complete
and up to date.
Again,
Welcome.
Ron mª¿ªm

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/25/03 08:59AM >>>
there are a number of logs that could help:

first, does the application itself generate a log? If so, does that
log
reflect the actual error returned? It might look something like
"ORA-nn"

Second, on the Windows Box itself, look for a file name
"alert.log" (I'm not that familiar with Oracle's configuration on
Windows as I run Unix but it should look something like that). Look to
see if there are any error messages in that file at the time the
connections are refused.

If increasing memory on the box itself helped, it's likely that what's
happening is that users are connecting to the box, never dropping or
closing the connections so that memory stays allocated. The box runs
out of memory, you reboot (closing the connections and releasing the
memory) and you are good for another week or so.

if that's what's happening -- you either have to get the users to LOG
OFF (yeah, right) or find a way of closing/killing the connections
after x amount of time (look into the online docs --
technet.oracle.com, specifically look at the network manuals).

and welcome! It's always nice to see a new face here, especially one
who is willing to LEARN

RE: Oracle 9i refuses to allow client connection -- I need some h elp.

2003-07-25 Thread Boivin, Patrice J
Title: Message

Check
Task Manager, Physical Memory, and Peak Memory Used.

If
Peak Memory Used is getting close to half of Physical Memory, your server is
running out of memory resources for user sessions because in Windows2000 the OS
splits memory half and half between user and kernel processes, and Oracle runs
as a user process.

We had
a 4G Windows2000 server that stopped accepting user connections for about 5
minutes because its memory usage had reached 1.4G of memory.  We had a
problem on an iAS server when it hit 1.6G or memory used.  The workarounds
are either add more memory or shrink the size of your SGA(s) to allow for the
memory allocation limitations.

Solution?  Windows2000 Advanced Server lets you put a /3G switch in
the boot.ini file, but that would only give you access to 75% of your server's
memory.  (I also read on the 'net that W2K AS comes with SQL Server
built-in, I don't know if that's true).  Needless to say, Windows Advanced
Server costs more than Windows2000 Server.

I'd be
curious to know if you were at or near half your physical memory
used.

Patrice.

  Might find something in your
SID.log.  This is in your Oracle_home\admin\bdump
directory.  Might also find something in your
Oracle_home\network\log\listener.log depending on if any tracing is
enabled.  I used to have this problem.  Found that stopping and
restarting my listener service a few times a week took care of it.  Also
adding more memory helped.  I had a TAR with Oracle on this and they
recommended the stopping and restarting the listener service.  I am on
windoze though so it may be a platform dependent thing, not like M$ has any
  issues with their OS.  ;o)

I need some help.
I'm an Oracle
administrator-To-Be, I'm awaiting funding for the basic Oracle DBA courses,
the
training has been
approved, just hasn't been funded.

Anyway, the only
things I do are add, modify, and reset application users' password via EM
and run
patching scripts via
SQL-Plus.  The application I have running on this particular 9i server
is TPOCS,
Third Party
Outpatient Collection System -- a billing system for the DoD's Military
Health System (MHS).
Oracle 9i is running
on a Windows 2000 server.

Anyway, the TPOCS
client is a PowerBuilder client and connects via SQL-Net -- I'm still
learning about that
mechanism.
Here's my problem.  Occasionally, Oracle refuses to let any client
connect to it -- it does this about
every 7 to 8
days.  It use to do it every 2 days, but the Tier 3 TPOCS helpdesk
recommended we increase the
ram on the server
from 512MB to 1GB.  Then the problem started occurring every 7 to 8
days.  To make the problem
go away I reboot the
server -- it only takes 10 minutes, however, I feel this a very poor
work-around.

Which logs could I
look in that would give you guys more information (like an error code) on
why Oracle refuses
client connections
and then how would we make this problem go away.  it is becoming a
PITA.

first, does the application itself generate a log? If so, does that log
reflect the actual error returned?

Might
find something in your SID.log.  This is in your
Oracle_home\admin\bdump directory.  Might also find something in your
Oracle_home\network\log\listener.log depending on if any tracing is
enabled.  I used to have this problem.  Found that stopping and
restarting my listener service a few times a week took care of it.  Also
adding more memory helped.  I had a TAR with Oracle on this and they
recommended the stopping and restarting the listener service.  I am on
windoze though so it may be a platform dependent thing, not like M$ has any
issues with their OS.  ;o)
