Re: [OGD] Publishing private e-mail on the web

2007-03-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen

Thanks for the link, I will include your sentence in the ‘Rules of Conduct’
for the Conifer Obsession Discussion Groups.
We only had one problem last year: The owner of the Gymnosperm database
posted some E-mail comments from a conifer expert from Kew Botanical Gardens
onto his website. I was shocked and asked him to remove it. He never did.
So, how can you really enforce it in a private group?

I am sure, you know, all our posts appear on the Internet as well. I am
always a bit reluctant to comment. Perhaps a screen-name is in order.
I was very upset, when I found two of the last posts about Garden Web World
making headlines on Google. See for yourself:
  http://www.google.com/search?hl=enq=Garden+Web+WorldbtnG=Google+Search

scroll down to # 5 and #6. Barbara, your name shows up as well!
To be honest, I wish, our post would be private. I personally do not
appreciate the publicity.
This is the main reason for getting all this unwanted spam mail.
For instance, click on Barbara’s post, scroll all the way to the bottom and
you will find in the left corner:
  Reply via E-mail to
  Barbara.
Click on Barbara and you have her E-mail address:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, all of your posts show up in the same matter with your E-mail address
hidden, however the Spamers know how to find those. I am sure each and every
one of you receive an uncontrollable amount of Spam Mail.
Perhaps our host would consider in closing this ‘Spam loop-hole’.
I am sure, more members would participate in the discussions as well.
  Thanks and best regards
  Siegrid Stern

have any problems.

[OGD] Presenting: Garden Web World

2007-02-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Hi everyone,
here is the web site I have been working on for almost a year and ready for
editing.
I was unable to get any help, so I had to do the whole project by myself. An
extremely difficult job.
We have set up a Garden Web World Association in Geneva and in the near future
a second one will be set up in USA. The two will operate as one unit.
It is a gamble, however the goal is: Success!
You all know, funds are desperately needed for saving those endangered plants
and research projects. Hopefully we will be able to generate those much-needed
funds.

Garden Web World is an unique and prestigious site and Google has pushed the
site to the top in many categories. Very exciting! So, everyone listed on this
site will get a lot of publicity. We cannot list everyone; therefore we list
only the most important and best places from around the world. We will only
list a very few for each country since space is limited.
There are three sites marked as ‘Advertising available’: Nurseries pg. 2, Tools
and Supplies and Décor. On those sites we will list anyone for a small fee to
raise funds.

We only concentrate on the Gems of the Plant world:
Orchids – Bromeliads – Cacti/Succulents and Conifers.
It is very important to receive a link from all of you who have a web site to
get publicity.
You may use any one of our logos, located on: http://gardenwebs.net/logo.htm

So, please start editing. If you have any photos to contribute for those
empty spaces,
please send those to me. If you think, someone should not be listed; I would
like to know about it. I like to know about other important places from around
the world, which should be included here. The top row is reserved for three of
the most important links. I would like to fill those as well and need
recommendations, appropriate to the site content.
Any of your comments on who should be deleted and added and the reason why,
please send them directly to me with the subject line: Garden Web World.
If you find grammar or spelling mistakes or broken links, please let me know as
well.
Have fun editing http://gardenwebs.net/
Thanks for all your help in advance.
Best regards,
Siegrid Stern

[OGD] Need Greenhouse shading advise

2007-02-06 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Hi everyone,

I use a Four Seasons sunroom as a greenhouse. The glass is clear and during
the summer I use about 55 % shade cloth. It is getting very hot during the
summer and in addition some of the plants still burn near the glass. The
orchids I have to grow on the floor.
I like to change the roof glass to a darker shade thus avoid using any shade
cloth.

Four Seasons have 2 types of dark glass:
MC 56 with 0.38 shading coefficient and
MC 16 with 0.18 shading coefficient.
  Clear glass has 0.99

Is any one in the group using one of Four Seasons glasses and could provide
some info.
MC 16 may be too dark? Will MC 16 provide enough shading to avoid any plant
damage? Any ideas what percentage of shade a 0.38 shading coefficient
provides
The term is confusing to me.

Here is their explanation of a shading coefficient:
Shading coefficient (SC) : A measure of the ability of a window or skylight
to transmit solar heat, relative to that ability for 1/8-inch clear,
double-strength, single glass. It is being phased out in favor of the solar
heat gain coefficient, and is approximately equal to the SHGC multiplied by
1.15. It is expressed as a number without units between 0 and 1. The lower a
window's solar heat gain coefficient or shading coefficient, the less solar
heat it transmits, and the greater is its shading ability.

Another thought would be to alternate rows of MC 16 and MC 56 on the roof.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Siegrid Stern from Michigan

Re: [OGD] message from Leo Schordje about new Charity Web Site - Vol 8, Issue 206

2006-08-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Dear Leo Schordje, I just found your message now. I did not ask for any kind of donations. I only asked for the names of the best orchid nurseries around the world. The OGDisabout exchanging orchid info. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. This is my volunteer project and I don’t need any help - donating time etc.I can get as much help as needed from the local UniversityExtension. The site is still ‘under construction’. It is a trial site to see if we can attract advertisers. It may work and it may not. In the meantime everyone who is listed on the site is getting a lot of free advertising. I am the one who is donating a lot of time and money on this mind-boggling project. The search engines are providing all the advertising needed. The site is already on top and listed on their first pages in many categories.
What is my reward? The satisfaction of doing something grant, doing it well, being successful and helping others. Our University has a large volunteer force. I am one of them. Volunteer work and charity are very important. I know the site will get linked by many Arboretums, Botanical Gardens and Plant Societies. I am sorry I have bothered you and the rest of the group with this web site. Very very sorry!! intellectual property is valuable. It is unreasonable to ask for donations of either without more information. What is the name of the Non-profit group that would be benefiting from my (and other OGD member's) efforts? Is your non-profit a registered 501(c.)3 entity. What information can be supplied that would demonstrate that this is not just another for profit site who wants to use content other people have worked hard to create. Give us something more than "Hey kids, Let's rent a barn and put on a Show" to mis-quote Mickey Rooney in an old movie. Reply to the group, as I am sure there are others in the group who would donate time and content if they thought this was actually a real conservation group. Leo

[OGD] Bromeliads - orchid companion

2006-07-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen
For those of you interested in Bromeliads and orchid companions, check out my web sites, photos as well. I grow them all: orchids, bromeliads, jungle cacti and conifers - the gems of the plant kingdom. They compliment each other. All the non flowering green orchids are hidden by the colorful foliage of the broms, thus creating a fantastic display. Bromeliads provide a home for countless geckos and treefrogs. Some of the large broms hold a few gallons of water and will humidify your greenhouse air. Grow your orchids outdoors and surround them with a circle of the succulent bromeliads. Squirrels will not touch those. The spines of the bromeliads will stop them. You may place all your plants between dwarf conifers and you will have a dazzling exotic display. Most members of the Michigan Orchid Society grow Bromeliads as well and use them in their shows, including the fantastic Tillandsias
(Airplants) Hopefully I have given you some ideas for orchid companion plants. Check out some of my web sites: http://siegrid.stern.home.att.net/ http://home.att.net/~Conifers/Photos.htm P.S. Make sure you check out Leping Zha’s fantastic photos. He is the best in the world.Regards,Siegrid

[OGD] copyright - using your photos

2006-06-28 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Hi,It has been done to my photos and one of my copyrighted names as well. 1. contact the person and ask them to remove the copyrighted photos or the name.It may take several e-mail's. You could tell them, you will use legal action.2. as a last resort you can contact Google's copyright department andcomplain. They can removeany site from their search engines. It could backfire though, so caution is in order.Their also is a procedure where you can mark your photos so no-one can use them.Siegrid

[OGD] A plea for HELP

2006-06-10 Thread Bromeliad Queen
Hi,I am asking the second time. I need some help for a charity web site. I have spend many hours setting it up. Some of you are crying about endangered species. So, lets do something about it.You may not know, but the Internet is all about Advertising and those big companies pull in millions from it. I had an idea, I got a domain, I set up a web site for advertising. This is my volunteer project for Michigan State Unversity Extension. However, those pages need to be filled with information. I am asking all of you, please provide some information. The proceeds will be donated to a ‘Fund for research and saving endangered species’. There is no site like it on the Internet, so I am hoping for a ‘big hit’ and hoping all of you will help. I can not do it alone, I don’t know the names of Orchid or Conifer Nurseries in Germany or Denmark etc.On the web
site I am concentrating on the ‘gems of the plant kingdom’. I grow all four of them, they compliment each other They are: orchids, bromeliads Cacti/succulents and conifers . Here is my question: What are the best nurseries (please specify if they specialize in orchids, bromeliads, cacti/succulents or conifers) for the following countries: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Norway, Sweden, USA If you know of any ‘Hidden Treasures’ places to visit from around the world, please list those as well. I may have more questions later on. Hopefully, the orchid community will help, since I don’t want to fill up the pages with just nurseries specializing in conifers and bromeliads. Let’s show the world: Orchids are the aristocrats of the flowering plant world. Thanks for helping. Best regards,
