[OGD] Thank you, Oliver re: comments on diacriticals

2008-03-07 Thread Chris McCutchan
I actually enjoy pushing my language skills by reading non-english posts, but
the constant 's, ee's, etc. elevate my frustration level more quickly than the
satisfaction of burnishing my versatility.

[OGD] RHS Search Question for Iris

2005-06-08 Thread Chris McCutchan
I know that you are an expert on this handy resource and am wondering if you
can help me find a way around a little bug in the search engine.

With complex crosses it would be really convenient to just copy the name of
a resulting parent, back up in the browser and then paste the name into the
search engine. Oddly, more often than not, I get a result of 'cross not
found.' If I do take the extra time to actually type the name of the parent
into the search box, the results almost always show up.

Taking an extra step and pasting and then re-copying the text from Notepad
(yes, I'm using a PC) yields inconsistent results.

Any tips? Or should I just become a more willing typist?

Thanks for any help,

Chris

[OGD] Simple 'sling psychrometer'

2005-03-23 Thread Chris McCutchan

Occasionally, to get a rough idea of humidity in my small (read: I would dent the walls if I were to swing things around my head!) growing area, I tilt my small floor fan to a horizontal position and thenput my thermometer face down onthe gril. Then I start to check e-mail. Half-way through, I record the temperature reading andthen tear off the corner of a tissue (Kleenex), dampen it with water and place it on the thermometer bulb, and place it back on the fan. (The wet tissue sticks really well!) After I have finished reading my mail, I take another reading and use the temp differential and a web page such as this http://members.nuvox.net/~on.jwclymer/wet.htmlto get a rough guage of humidity. Works for me as a ballpark guestimate.

[OGD] Love the literary orchid references!

2004-12-16 Thread Chris McCutchan
Quite contrary to being off topic, I really think that it enhances the
appreciation of these fiends of nature - thank you Marianne and Viature!

This quote caught me particularly:
tired of artificial
flowers aping real ones, he wanted some natural flowers that would look like
fakes.
Disappointed that our guests rarely comment on the blooming orchids I
liberally plunk around the check-in area, I commented that my efforts were
not being properly appreciated. My co-worker immediately set me straight -
Don't be silly. They all notice them. They just don't say anything because
they think they are silk!

Unfortunately, I think that this is more an indicator of our clients'
perceptive deficiencies than my horticultural talents!

Best -
Chris

[OGD] Fun in Borneo

2004-08-17 Thread Chris McCutchan
After reading Into the Heart of Borneo by Redmond OHanlan, I am convinced
that the leeches might be rather on the benign side of Borneo's diverse
opportunities for natural encounters! While not mentioning orchids
specifically, the descriptions of habitat are fascinating. I highly
recommend it.

I can understand the danger of an orchid market, but what, dear Iris,
impugnes your minicat with insidiousness? You've sparked my curiousity here!

Congrats on the discovery!
BTW, I don't find you difficult to like!
I also sympathize with the plight of your daughter and her flight traumas.
Don't be too hard on Andy - he finds it hard not to like you as well. Notice
he says he probably would dislike you INTENTLY. I would have to use big
reserves of intention not to appreciate you as well.
