Re: [OGD] bush snails

2006-01-13 Thread K Barrett

Did anyone have anything to say about using caffeine to kill bush snails?

K Barrett

Thanks to all who responded to my plea for suggestions on eradicating bush
snails. An astonishing variety of solutions were offered, all undoubtedly
practical and effective under certain conditions. Somewhere in there I
will find a solution to my problem. Thanks again.

Re: [OGD] Bush Snails/Bark

2006-01-11 Thread K Barrett
Are you going to bake the bark? I understand it kills weed seed too.
Process batches in 13x9 inch pans at 325 for about 20-30 minutes, stirring
occasionally. Yum! You probably don't have to go as high as 325, anything
over 212 (boiling) would kill a snail egg.

I have a bush snail infestation that I believe came along in a recent batch
of bark. I am now embarking on a program to sterilize all remaining
bark. Can someone please advise me on the most practical way to kill bush
snails? I have about 2 cu. ft. to process now, and will have more in the
future (intend to process every new batch from now on!).

You can also look into "Solarization" rather than baking or steaming to kill snail eggs, and a multitude of other unwanted things. All it takes is a week of bright sunshine and some clear plastic. Should be easy in CAPaul and Diane LeBlanc Species Orchids http://www.bluemoonexotics.com -Original Message-From: K Barrett [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2006 11:51 AMTo: Orchids@orchidguide.comSubject: Re: [OGD] Bush Snails/BarkAre you going to bake the bark? When this thread was re-opened I decided to scout again. No slugs or
bush
snails on 40 potato slices!!! I still have a bottle of unused caffeine
 solution.

 It's a matter of _intent,_ Martin! ;-)

Once your local gang of molluscs find out you've really got the means to
nuke them to the last degree, in the depths of the night they confer and
concur, (without your knowledge or permission) OK, we'll go.

We mentally threaten to really throw out that 'valuable' plant which
hasn't
flowered for the last decade, and lo and behold, it sprouts a host of
buds...

And when, thru personal growth or true serendipity we at last acquire the
emotional skills to deal harmoniously with a certain class of nasty
person,
they disappear forever from our lives!

 Very frustrating.

It's enough to make a gentleman drop his handful of mashed potatoes.

 Enough already

Re: [OGD] bush snails and Mesurol

2004-09-18 Thread marianne.fleurimont
Hello Everyone,

I found some Mesurol for slugs (and snails, I assume) in the local garden
centers. On the label it says poison... so I assume it should be VERY
strong. Unfortunately, I found this in a German shop, and the instruction
manual is in German... and I understand extremely little of what is written
there. So: can anyone provide me with dosing info and what precautions I
should take? Are they suitable for use indoors?

Thanks

[OGD] bush snails

2004-09-17 Thread Jorge Melendez
They are not a problem here, but sometime ago I found several in one or two
pots, chewing roots and damaging some bulbs too. I looked and found some
info on Zonitoides arboreus in Hawaii (I assume there could be some other
similar sp also). It includes some photos. Got rid of them by submerging the
pots overnight, btw.

what are bush snails? I have no time to look at 78,100 entries (besides I am
too lazy)
if you give the latin cognomen I will look it up
(the only snails I have live on the underside of the pads of my Nympheas and
chew ugly holes)

[OGD] Bush Snails

2004-09-14 Thread Dorris
I have been privy to lots and lots on info on Bush snails for all of my 30
years in the orchid area...Sorry to report that they are a true menace and
are not easily controlled. The big problem is that they have no sense of
smell so that the normal deterrents do not work well. The only tried and
true method is to flush the entire pot with a fluid that will do the
job..You must also consider coating the area of the bench where the vector
started..That WILL do it..but forget bait..unless they just happen to crawl
over it..the bait will do no good. Bill Bergstrom

[OGD] bush snails

2004-07-27 Thread CC
We had the same problem in a commercial Gerbera operation up here in Canada.
The bush snails were causing irregular leaf growth and no flower production,
looking much the same as a viral or broad/cyclamen mite infestation. I took
some plants that showed more pronounced symptoms and drenched them in plain
water. Within minutes, the snails were crawling out of the soil and up the
leaf stems. In my experience, I would suggest using a slug and snail bait.
We have a bio-friendly product up here called Ferramol, the Active
Ingredient is Iron Phosphate. It AI is a naturally occurring mineral, used
in many agricultural fertilizer products and is found in the soil. It is
harmless to people, animals, birds and aquatic life. The bait actually drew
the snails out of the soil, where they fed on the pellets. The label
suggests that even a small amount of ingested bait causes the snails to stop
feeding and within 3-6 days, they begin to die of starvation. Within 2
weeks, the plants were growing normally and we could not tell which plants
had been infested.

Hope this helps!
