[Origami] Origami sighting: Five-intersecting tetrahedra
Adam Savage (of MythBusters fame) and Matt Parker (Standup Mathematician/ numberphile) collaborated in their attempt to show how to build a polyhedra model, based on an origami model (Tom Hull’s five intersecting tetrahedra) that someone named Polly apparently folded for Matt. They discuss the maths, symmetry, logic, and ultimate frustrations of building the model in one day. The long YouTube video is well worth one’s time to watch, IMHO. But then again, I enjoyed vicariously geeking out with them as they plan, with excitement, to build their colorful non-paper model. https://youtu.be/s_F4uD8wAs0 Enjoy, Belle Belle

[Origami] Origami-inspired designs wins James Dyson design award
An origami-inspired line of clothing (Petit Pli) for children wins the James Dyson award. The clothes employ pleats & corrugations, allowing the clothing to stretch and expand. It is also sustainable since the garments grow with its wearer. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/sep/07/origami-inspired-clothing-range-that-grows-with-your-child-wins-dyson-award Last year's International prize of the Dyson design was awarded to Isis Shiffer (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/17/folding-bike-helmet-wins-james-dyson-design-award), whom many may remember or met at a number of OUSA conventions held at FIT. [Origami] In search of the creator/designer of self closing box
Thanks to all who responded to my query (both here & privately) about the creator/designer of the box that I plan to teach at Special Sessions in December. 1) Francesco Mancini identified the box as that of Giovanni Maltagliati's Gift Box, diagrammed in Paulo Mulatinho's Origami 30 fold by fold projects. Initially, Arlene Gorchov also thought that it was Giovanni's model when I showed it to her; however, on closer inspection, she believed that it was not the same model since Giovanni's is based on thirds and my reverse-engineered model was not. I tend to agree with Arlene. 2) Phillip Chapman-Bell wrote, "When I first folded the model in 2009, I called it Dibs Cube, because I imagined it must have been discovered before, but if it hadn't, I wanted to call dibs on it. A crease pattern and some step photos here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskHbhmzG If there are no prior claims and my dibs stand, the model would be in the creative commons realm and would not require permission to teach." Based on the step folds posted on Phillip's Flickr site, I think that the box I have is Phillip's design, at least IMHO. I did not learn it from Phillip, nor has he taught the model during OUSA convention. How I came to fold the box remains a mystery, but Dibs Cube is what I'll teach. Thanks, Phillip, for a lovely design. Lastly, Phillip & Giovanni granted me their permissions to teach their boxes. If time allows, I may teach Giovanni's box as well, provided I am able to fold it well enough to teach it by December. Each box will be attributed to their respective creator & designer. Cheers, Belle
[Origami] In search of the creator/designer of self closing box
Does anyone recognise this self closing box, folded from a single square? A picture and description are posted on OUSA's December Special Sessions: https://origamiusa.org/specialsessions/self-closing-box I don't remember how I came to fold the model, from whom I learnt it, or where it is diagrammed. I've inquired if anyone recognises the model, but no one seems to know the creator or designer either. I am scheduled to teach the model and I would like to have the creator's permission to teach it, but can't since its provenance is unknown. It's my hope that someone from the O-List recognises the model, is able to identify its creator and/or provide a reference of where it is diagrammed or published. Many thanks, Belle

[Origami] Fwd: origami sighting - somewhat - in the movie HER
Begin forwarded message: I recently watched Spike Jonze's movie HER [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Her_%28film%29] and it was great. What caught my attention too was the set and clothes design, which has lots of color blocking and simplicity too. The protagonist is Theodore Twombly (actor Joaquin Phoenix) and above his work space was a mobile with simply colored polyhedra. I'm not sure if it was origami but it definitely looked like it was made of paper. I haven't been able to find a photo of that shot but it looked a lot like this mobile show at this DIY website [http://crafts.tutsplus.com/tutorials/make-a-beautiful-paper-polyhedron-mobile--craft-4771] I think I found what mobile they used in the movie. [Origami] Tesseract
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had designed an origami Tesseract... Here's wiki link for Tesseract... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesseract And then to take it one-step further, see this link for a dynamic Tesseract (I'm calling it that, but wiki page calls it a rotation in 4d space!) http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-dimensional_space During the 'rotation', the edges change length; even so, d'you think it's possible to have an origami model of this? Any one try? Thanks... Best, Vishakha va26us at yahoo dot com .

[Origami] Q re: paper cup modular
Hi there, I had a question re: the very simple model- the paper cup modular. It's an 8-piece modular using the simple paper cup folds. The model ends up being a flat coaster like model with neat 8 pizza wedges on one side a twist kaleidoscope effect on the other side. It's a neat little simple model, especially when made w ombré or hued papers. So my question has to do w the paper cup model itself. Typically when folding the paper cup model, it isn't that critical how accurate or equal the two (left right) folds are but for a modular, accuracy is critical. So how do you make a perfect paper cup? What's the geometry? Any one know? Thanks for your input... Best, Vishakha NYC

[Origami] Origami sighting (BBC's IQ)
During an episode of BBC's show QI (Quite Interesting), aired on Monday (Sept. 9th) in Edinburgh, Scotland, host Stephen Fry, challenged all four members of the panel to fold various paper airplanes launch their folded models. Two glided, while the others crashed on launch. The segment discussed how a 3-inch paper cylinder stayed afloat longer than a paper airplane if launched in a twisting motion, as when an American football is passed. So, has anyone ever folded a truly nice Jasckstone and could share his/hers input on how to achieve nice results? I speciafically want advice for Jack Skillman's model, neither John Montrol's nor Sy Chen's. -- Jorge Jaramillo Hello Jorge, back in the late 1990s, iirc, at an OUSA convention in NYC, we learnt the Skillman Jackstone model from Vicky Mihara Avery. I took that class cause every attempt I'd made till then, to fold the Jackstone, had been less than. It's not an easy model the diagrams in Harbin's book were not the easiest for me to follow. In any case, Vicky, who is an amazing teacher, taught us - there were only a handful students in the class - it was incredible. Not only did she break down the folding sequence to make it 'easy' to fold, we folded the first model so fast that we were able to fold several more Jackstones in that one class they each turned out better than the previous. I know this doesn't necessarily help you fold the Jackstone. I'm sorry I don't have precise or any notes on how Vicky taught us but my suggestion would be to reach out to Vicky request her to teach it again. Learning the Skillman Jackstone from Vicky was a highlight for me my father... Best, Vishakha
