RE: How can I use an BLOB datatype

2000-11-29 Thread Tim Endres

Gernalizing this one step further. We have a situation where
we want to place large ( larger than 10MB ) into the DB. Thus,
when I get or store I would really like to have an InputStream
or OutputStream to read or write the "object". However, it does
not appear that EJB really supports this. Has anyone build an
entity bean (or session for that matter) that can stream large
amounts of data into and out of the database? How?

Thanks,
tim.

Adding trusted CA's to SSL enabled Orion site.

2000-11-29 Thread David Elliot

Hi all,

Has anybody managed to add additional trusted Certificate Authority's
to those available with the default Orion install?

After configuring Orion to use SSL using the provided docco I
accessed the secure site and bingo, worked first time (as opposed
to iPlanet, Tomcat!). However I need to use client-auth
(authentication from client certificates) so the next step was
to turn client-auth on.

Unfortunately the client certificates installed in my browser
have been issued by my companies' own CA (not by Verisign & Co),
and it looks as though Orion is not prepared to trust client
certificates signed by this CA. I'm guessing this because when
IE provides a list of client certificates to submit to the Orion
challenge, the list is empty. Presumably this means Orion is
not listing my companies' CA in the list of CA's it is prepared
to trust??

I have tried adding my companies' CA certificate to the 'cacerts'
keystore believing that Orion might be picking up its list of trusted
CA's from there. Unfortunately that did not work...still an empty
list of client certs provided by IE (I do know the client certs are
installed correctly in IE as other SSL servers here can request and
use them...)

Any thoughts on how to add trusted CA's to Orion greatly
appreciated...!!

Challenge: Get the J2EE reference examples on Orion

2000-11-29 Thread Mateo Torrealto

Challenge:

Get the J2EE reference implementation examples
to work on Orion.

I tried to get the examples out the examples at
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/J2EE/Intro/index.html#contents
with Orion.

I failed. (so far)

These examples are from Sun and are for the reference
implementation of J2EE.

I am able to get the samples to work on the reference
implementation, but not for Orion. :o(

Has anyone else try to "port" these samples to Orion?
It should be really easy. Orion is compliant. What is
the easiest way to deploy the ear files from these
samples?

(This is good because the ear files are valid and
tested. And the example is explained well.)

I did this because I've been having troubles.
I went through the Orion primer. No Problem.
I tried to port some custom beans to Orion. Problems!
I figured there was something I did wrong in the
web.xml file, server.xml or something so I would try
some really well formed beans and servlets. If I can't
get the beans from the reference implementation
running, then

So now I figure if someone has already got the samples
for the reference implementation to run in Orion, then
I am all set. (If they tell me what they did to get
them running.)

Conversely, I could tell you what I did that did not
work.

If not, I will keep plugging along.

I have has some luck deploying servlets, etc. to Orion
with lots of help.

I don't think there is a problem with the Orion
documentation. But, I am having a hard time with the
server.xml and default web site.xml. I know my web.xml
and such are configured correctly because they work in
the reference.

I think having tutorial on how to port the reference
samples from J2ee reference to Orion would be a huge
boom for Orion newbies and ultimately to Orion.

If someone could help me out, I will do a right up on
how is is done and post the link.

RE: How can I use an BLOB datatype

2000-11-29 Thread Tim Drury

In CMP, the output streams should be created for you.
The database config xml file should provide a mapping
of a Serializable object to a BLOB/Image/etc. If
this is done, the object will be serialized before
insertion automatically.

I'm investigating that myself. I want to get it to work for serializing
an entity object's dependent objects to a database. From what I can tell,
you need to implement interface Serializable on the object(s) you want to
persist. In java.sql api docs, you'll see classes named
ObjectOutputStream, PreparedStatement and an interface Blob. Looking at
these you'll see methods relating to writing out a serialized object,
setting a Blob, getting a Blob, etc. I hope this helps...

Hello scott,

Check how many EJB are being deployed. Orion slows down startup when
it's deploying EJB, because it involves generating the java sources of the
skel and stub for the home and remote, and compiling them.

Re: Problems with an identity (autoincrement) field.

2000-11-29 Thread Boris Gertsberg

You can't use identity columns with EJBs as a primary keys if you use create
method, you have to set primary key property during the call of create
method. However, in this mailing list I saw ingenious hack to use finder
method as a replacement of create. So basicly you never call create method
but this finder instead. It looked something like :

INSERT INTO sometable (filed1,field2) VALUES ($field1,$field2);
SELECT pk_identity_column,field1,field2 from sometable where
pk_identity_column=@@IDENTITY

Obviously it will not work with other application servers that have it's own
language for defining queries (WebLogic for example).

Boris.

P.S. Consider it as a workaround if you absolutely must use identities and
NOT as a good programming practice that you should follow.

Problems with an identity (autoincrement) field.

2000-11-29 Thread fresnaULL

Hi,
I've made an entity cmp which map a database table which has an
identitiy (autoincrement) field as primary key.
When I do a home.create(primary_key) I get the following error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Cannot insert explicit
value for identity column in table when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF.

I've been looking for the INSERT statement which i guess is asociated with
the create method to try to fix it up but I haven't found it.

Does anybody know what I have to do?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Creating zones in orion server

One other solution:

create a second web app that uses a different servlet directory directive.

like so:

in application.xml add:

enseek
/enseek

in orion-application.xml add:

create a new directory under your application named enseek.
create a new directory under enseek called WEB-INF.
copy your existing web.xml file to your new WEB-INF directory.

change the following line:

to

This will allow you to do the same thing as my previous post without having to
map individual servlets.
IMHO the previous method is cleaner.

RE: SQL Error: Connection is broken

2000-11-29 Thread m . c . jansen

Hi,

Based on a remark from Juan Lorandi in "RE: Can't find DataSource in
ejb-jar.xml file???" I found out what caused the "SQL Error: Connection is
broken" when I was trying to use SQL-Server.

Although I renamed my Hypersonic data source (by changing the name-tag) in
DATA-SOURCES.XML, it was still trying to use it. Because I wasn't running
HypersonicSQL by that time I got the error message "SQL Error: Connection is
broken".

I thought Orion was using the name-tag in DATA-SOURCES.XML to locate a data
source. But that is not the case. It is using the "ejb-location"-tag. A
reference to this tag is made by the data-source attrib in the tag entity in
orion-ejb-jar.xml file in the deployment directory of the application. This
attribute points to the "ejb-location"-tag in the DATA-SOURCES.XML file. So
although I renamed the Hypersonic datasource, the ejb-location tag was still
the same.

By knowing that is was really easy to solve the problem:
- I just changed the data-source attrib in the tag entity in
orion-ejb-jar.xml to "jdbc/SQLServerDS"

When I started Orion the tables were automatically created on my SQL Server
database.

Marco.

P.s. This is wat I did to use SQLServer with Orion:
- Install the sample applications and deploy them with HypersonicSQL
- Downloaded the trial version of i-net Una 2000 Driver Version 3.04 for MS
SQL Server;
- Put the Una200.jar file in the \ORION\LIB directory;
- Add a new data source to DATA-SOURCES.XML in the \ORION\CONFIG directory
(see below);
- Change the data-source in the ORION-EJB-JAR.XML file in the application
deployment directory to the value of the
ejb-location tag (as found in the DATA-SOURCES.XML, in my case
"jdbc/SQLServerDS")
- Restart Orion

Example of my SQL-Server Datasource:

Hi,

I am having a problem with connecting the sample applications (e.g. ATM and
Addressbook) to SQL Server . When I deploy the sample applications (e.g.
atm-ejb.jar) I get the following error message: "SQL error: Connection is
broken: Connection refused: no further information".

I did the following things:
- I installed the sample applications and deployed them.
- They work fine with the HypersonicSQL Database.
- I downloaded the trial version of i-net Una 2000 Driver Version 3.04 for
MS SQL Server;
- I put the Una200.jar file in the \ORION\LIB directory;
- I tested the driver with a Java programm found in the README.TXT of the
i-net driver (see below) => works fine!
- I changed the properties of the Hypersonic datasource in DATA-SOURCES.XML
(see below);
- I removed the \ORION\APPLICATION-DEPLOYMENT directory (to make sure that
the sample applications are redeployed);
- I started Orion

Does anybody had the same problems and found a solution? Or does anybody
know if I did something wrong?

Thanks!

Marco.

FYI: I am using Windows 2000 Professional, JDK1.2.2 and SQL-Server 7.0.

Pradeep,

In web.xml create a mapping like this:

servletname
servletname
com.yourco.servlet.Servlet

servletname
enseek/servletname

RE: Running two instances of Orion on the same IP and port

2000-11-29 Thread Russ White
Title: Running two instances of Orion on the same IP and port

Larry,

Orion
is acting just as it should. You cannot have to two servers bind to the same
port (This could create all sorts of problems). There is no web server I am
aware of that will do this. That being said, all you really need to do is create
a new application and a new web site that is bound to a virtual host on the same
instance of Orion. Orion does a good job of keeping applications separate, so
you should be able to test to your hearts content. If you ever need to restart
things (on the test host) then you can simply restart the test application
from the console. You need not restart Orion itself.

  Orioners,
Has anyone ever tried to run two instances of Orion on the
same machine, IP and port.  What I am trying to do is have a second
instance of Orion listen to only certain virtual hosts (headers) and the first
pick up any unknown or blank headers.
The reason for us doing it this way is to have a test
installation of Orion that will be restarted often and a second 'stable
'installation that will run some ancillary sites for our internal
  network.
I know that binding a second IP to the box and having the
second Orion listen on that IP would probably work.  Is there an obvious
reason that the way I am attempting always gives me an "Error starting HTTP
server: Address already in use" error on the second instance?
  thanx,
  Larry

Pradeep,

the best thing you can do to yourself is read the servlet 2.2 specification.
There is a whole chapter (#10) on "mapping requests to servlets". Basically
what you need is a servlet mapping, which is specified in the web
application deployment descriptor

Creating zones in orion server

2000-11-29 Thread Pradeep

Hello Sir,
I have been using Orion server for my application and have been
successfully deploying many applications. But i am facing a problem in
segregating the servlets into different zones, Like for example

The servlets in the web-inf/classes directory can be accessed with the URL
"http://localhost/servlet/servletname" without any poblems.

But now if I want to access the servlets, lets say in the
web-inf/classes/enseek directory with the URL
"http://localhost/enseek/servletname"..? HOw do I do this

Can you please guide me with the various Configuration changes to be made in
the various XML files ? Also guide me if i have to copy any XML files in the
new folder.
Please help me out in solving the problem???

Yest there is, there can be only one HTTPD listening to the same port.
You could run have the other instance listen to 8080 for example. I
don't think binding another ip to the box will help you eiter.

Setup the first instance of Orion as usual.
Setup the 2nd instance of Orion on a different port.
Use TunnelServlet in Orion 1 to forward requests to Orion 2 for necessary
vhosts.
