Just to add, I dont think the organizer just approve all the CFP coming in.
They do have a selection committee, tho I dont know who they are/is.

I know because my CFP about Cloud and KVM is being rejected.

there are lots to be done, now that osdc has had that experience and gone
through the learning curve. kudos to all those involved in the conference.
the team needs more people and a strong taiko / big brother.

rafe, is your email hinting that there will still be a next year ? ;-)
appreciate if mdec can still continue to be the big taiko. but have a little
more faith for the little brother to define its path ;-)

while mosc2010 is still 'hot', can we start with the planning and paperwork
for mosc2011 ? then we can put in the program, organisation and budget much
earlier.

we also need to revisit the osdc formalisation and ask again : is osdc a
geek club or a business association or can it be both ? reading from this
thread: business is the anti-thesis of geek.

in my personal opinion, i would like osdc to be a geek club where it is able
to do advocacy and building up the community and do stuff like the
linuxvarsity and penguin masuk kampung.

i would also like to thank everyone in the community and inform everyone
that i will be stepping down as pro-term deputy president for osdc.my. i
want to focus on the oss industry (the cari makan part of the eco-system).

We chose friday night for a few reasons actually:
- Friday the 13th is easy to remember.
- Fridaynight we don't have to worry too much about people who have to
work next day
- Since the event is supposed to be fast-paced, 3,5 hours should be
more then enough. That fits nicely into an evening.
- Friday the 13th offers endless possibilities for entering in a
little bit of creativity/theming. Don't worry, we won't make you come

The only real downside here is that traffic on early friday evening
can be pretty 'interesting' :)

Touche. I could come up with a list of excuses, but that doesn't
change the fact that I'm a side-line talker at least for this
conference. I didn't explicitly say so, but I have great respect for
those in the organisation pulling this kind of thing of, and I'm sure
they have decent reasons for the decisions they made. I guess these
are part of the growing pains of open source becoming more ready for
the business world.

Moving forward then (and moving towards action instead of words) is
there anything I could help do right now? I'm about to organise a
highly technical event on August the 13th in the style of what I wrote
here: http://www.tribily.com/content/hivestorm-fast-paced-group-brainstorm.
'Problem' is though that that type of event is a breeze to organise
when compared to a fullblown conference.

/me is humbly open for suggestions.

would like to apologize if what I write here might hurt your big damn ego...

Kudos to the team who have organize mosc 2010 and who have put the heart and
soul into making the conference a success in any way... for all of us here
and there, where the fu*k are you guys when this 5 people needed you the
most?? Those who call themself a strong supporter of the course!! Where are
you when this people did not sleep for a week stright?? Struggling to raise
funds to give you an environment where you will feel at home and appreciated
and a place where you feel at ease to learn and to be among those who
fighting the same course as you!!! Where were all of you who only have the
guts to talk cock without having the balls to lay a finger to help them!!
I'm coming from an environment that is totally not OS and reading all the
crap here make me feel sick that the so called "brotherhood" is just a lame
excuse to point finger at others.. do fucking something about it lah don't
just talk. See the email see the Twitter see the blog look at it read it!
See how many times that they have asked for help yet none of you responded
none of you do shit about it now you are talking and bitching about it! Help
lah is for you guys anyway cannot understand ke? Feel like the big words in
OS eg, contributing is just a myth. YOU who feel that you are on top tak
reti ke tolong need to put red carpet is it in order for YOU to contribute
and to help!

Why they have in berjaya is only because the want to put a standard to the
OS conference being at par with the any others conference out there, think
about this guys if they were to have it in a 3rd class venue and trying to
promote the use of OS in the business what would be the offset of that? What
would the judgements of those who see it yet to adapt it. What would be
their perception over it!

I have so many things to write here but I honestly feel that it doesn't make
a different what so ever till every each one of you realize the true value
of being and working together as one in achieving the ultimate goal!

Sleep on it and think bout it if so there is another conference next year
you guys might be smarter a bit in way to CONTRIBUTE to the whole agendas...

[osdcmy-public] Re:

2010-07-07 Terurut Topik Chen Ruo Fei

Azrul I agree with you on every aspects you mentioned. Great
presentation during the light talk!

My mind was thinking "what the hell" when I saw Microsoft being one of
the only two main sponsors. M$ is pushing very hard to get into the
open source community, and they will take whatever possible to attract
clueless developers to use their platform.

By the way while I do agree that it is very important to get sponsors
from open source giants such as Oracle rather than from Microsoft, it
is also important to get more open source communities to really take
part in the conference. Otherwise the conference would be too business
oriented and become a market place for Red Hat et al to sell their
products to CIO/CTOs, like what happened in OSSPAC.

My friend also mentioned to me that the quality of speakers varied
greatly. Its like MOSC just accepts as many presentations as possible
to attract as many audience as possible. To me its like attracting the
wrong crowd to the conference. Heck I don't even want to measure how
much proportion of the audience truly appreciate open source. To cope
with the technical level of these audience, majority of the talks are
very introductory and I feel that it'd be better to put the title of
these talks as "Introduction to XXX".

I also feel that the environment is too large and too serious to have
some more casual sessions, like Ubuntu jam, PDF exploit workshop, and
lightning talks. The hall is so large and the distance between the
speaker and audience is so far that these sessions become more like
lecturing, rather than interactive session where discussions can be
made without through the microphone.

When I asked few of my OSS elite friends whether they will be
attending MOSC, they said that there's nothing much to see and going
attending it would be waste of time.

So while the participation of Microsoft do is an irritating fact, I
think there are also many other things to improve, if we want to get
back our geeks to attend next year's MOSC.

Just my 2 cents. :)

I actually was surprised about how much of a backseat MS took.
Normally when they sponsor a conference their name is all over the
place. This conference, it was limited to a logo here and there, a
small booth and a keynote that I missed (on purpose, sleeping in was
so much more attractive ;) ). Believe me, I have seen this a lot
differently many times.

I guess this boils back down to the question of having a clear focus.
This MOSC was very confusing: was it a business conf or a hacker/geek
kind of conference. It seemed to be somewhere in between, which is a
lot harder as a speaker to cater to then either end of that spectrum.

I got seriously concerned when I attended the drupal performance talk
just before doing my own zabbix talk. There, 3 or so people raised
their hand when the speaker asked how many people ever used Drupal.
How the hell can you expect someone to go in-depth on Drupal
performance when nobody has ever touched it? That's why I finished my
talk earlier, I didn't want to go as in-depth as I had planned. I
already feel like it was way too much in-depth anyway.

I didn't think it was a waste of time, I learned a lot. Just not from
the sessions, more about meta-stuff :)

Re: [osdcmy-public]

Azrul I agree with you on every aspects you mentioned. Great presentation
during the light talk!

My mind was thinking "what the hell" when I saw Microsoft being one of the
only two main sponsors. M$ is pushing very hard to get into the open source
community, and they will take whatever possible to attract clueless
developers to use their platform.

By the way while I do agree that it is very important to get sponsors from
open source giants such as Oracle rather than from Microsoft, it is also
important to get more open source communities to really take part in the
conference. Otherwise the conference would be too business oriented and
become a market place for Red Hat et al to sell their products to CIO/CTOs,
like what happened in OSSPAC.

My friend also mentioned to me that the quality of speakers varied greatly.
Its like MOSC just accepts as many presentations as possible to attract as
many audience as possible. To me its like attracting the wrong crowd to the
conference. Heck I don't even want to measure how much proportion of the
audience truly appreciate open source. To cope with the technical level of
these audience, majority of the talks are very introductory and I feel that
it'd be better to put the title of these talks as "Introduction to XXX".

I also feel that the environment is too large and too serious to have some
more casual sessions, like Ubuntu jam, PDF exploit workshop, and lightning
talks. The hall is so large and the distance between the speaker and
audience is so far that these sessions become more like lecturing, rather
than interactive session where discussions can be made without through the
microphone.

When I asked few of my OSS elite friends whether they will be attending
MOSC, they said that there's nothing much to see and going attending it
would be waste of time.

So while the participation of Microsoft do is an irritating fact, I think
there are also many other things to improve, if we want to get back our
geeks to attend next year's MOSC.

Just my 2 cents. :)

cheers,

Soares

Not having the conf in an expensive hotel downtown should already save
shitloads of money and cut out a lot of the "wrong" audience. Then,
finding companies to do small sponsorships should not be too hard.
If I'm still around when the time comes closer next year, our startup
tribily (http://tribily.com) will definitely be interested in
providing some no strings-attached sponsorship (don't have super-large
budgets though, but all bits help, right?). I believe that these kinds
of events should be free from companies trying to push their agenda.
It's about the geeks and the knowledge-sharing. If you want
marketing-opportunities, go somewhere else :)

If Malaysia is to build another national car, it will cost us taxpayers
billions. If Malaysia is to build another Twin Tower it will cost us
again billions. Now Malaysia is building more F1 cars, again more
money. But to build a top of the charts SourceForge project it cost us
nothing. Only me in this farm here with a ADSL line. No MDec, no grant,
no bodek. It is time someone beat my goal post rather than hate me for
pointing out the obvious. But i have to. I am not on the rest of the
world's side. I am on my side.
