Yes. We call them Big Iron. With all the noise and the need of aircond. Its huge. Its can handle batch processing in matters of hours. Remembers Banking need to use this for a huge calculation with hundred thousand account. The data is huge. You can search for other Big Iron like HP Super Dome thats running HP-UX 11i, IBM AS400 (Blue and Red) thats running OS400, Unisys that run ECDIC OS system (Spend 2 months to write a shell script to integrate data system from Unisys and Unix SVR4). The bank tend to use the Z series as something like a Big Database, the thinking tend to be very different. As the system is optimized for batch processing, and it used to be it need a bridge to support tcp/ip not quite sure if it still need it. and one more interesting is, they have hardware supported IO, so it is very optimized for that too. NO, the Z series have a long tradition. It started 40 years ago as system 360. And it is said the proprietary OS have some of their code since that time, and it is said that it can runs program written since then. Imagine, during 1960's they have invented Paravirtualization, and a series of stuff that is way ahead of their competition during that time. Disclaimer, I only used their proprietary OS long time ago, no linux though, good old days On Fri, May 27, 2011 at 6:08 PM, mohd fenris wrote: > AIX right?
