[OSList] 30 year celebration!

2019-08-23 Thread Jeff Aitken via OSList
Harrison came to my grad school in 1989 to offer two days of open space on
'spirit in organizations'. It helped kick off our new MA in 'organizational
development and transformation', co-led by the awesome duo Antonio Nunez
and Howard Schechter.

Changed my life... That program morphed into an online MA in Leadership btw
(shameless plug.)

I'm happy to report that the 30th anniversary of Open Space at CIIS in San
Francisco was celebrated with a Faculty-Staff gathering using open space to
start the new school year. A deep, resonant, and creative time was had, of
course!

Onward with blessings

Dear Moiz,

good luck with your os event on a small level.

Here are some pictures.

The first picture shows a bulletin board with the issues participants
posted. Here you see that each beginning time for breakout sessions has
a separate pinwall (6 pinwalls for the 6 beginning times spread over two
days).
Participants posted their issues on A3 size yellow papers according to
the time that they wanted to have their issues worked on.
Each yellow issue paper has a post-it stuck to it, showing the time and
the space for that session.

The second picture shows the postits arranged on a separate flipchart
for a 2 day os event with 5 beginning times for breakout sessions. Each
post it has the beginning time it is intended for and the space (with a
symbol such as a sun, moon, star, cloud, flower as in this case).
Right next to the flipchart you see an empty bulletin board with the
beginning time it is intendet for. On the flipchart you also see a
postit that has pins stuck into it for participants to use to fasten
their issue sheets.

The third picture shows a bulletin board in the Market phase of the os
event where participants have used up all the postits (with time and
space noted on them and stuck to their issues, you see the empty sheets
on the flipchart to the left where the time and space postits were
arranged and are now stuck to the issues) and two participants are seen
planning which breakout session they want to attend.

Speaking generally, you can use any wall for a bulletin board. In my
practice that were wooden walls (such as in gyms of schools), movable
separation walls in a very large room usually wood, a row of tables with
a row of more tables placed on top of then them with their surfaces
facing participants (stability!), stone walls, tapestry walls, etc.
Each requires a method to attach the issue sheets (pins, sticky tape,
etc.) so that they can easily be moved when participants want to change
beginning times, the day, the space or bunch issues that appear to be
similar or the same.

I am sending you this directly since the OSLIST does not readily accept
attachments.

Contact me directly with any questions you may have.
You may also search for an os worker near you in the Open Space World

And, of course, you are invited to include yourself there, too.

Dear Jeff,

congratulations!
This appears to me to be an example of the sustained impact open space
can have in groups, organizations and systems.

Of course, I am curious how your life changed back in 1989 and also how
the perpetual use changed the programme or the institution...

Re: [OSList] 30 year celebration!

2019-08-23 Thread Jeff Aitken via OSList
Hi Michael: We enjoyed twice yearly OS retreats in the MA program for 7
years while I worked there, and then I brought it into my small PhD program
in cultural recovery and wrote a dissertation with OS as my research "muse".

Angeles Arrien taught at CIIS, and her wisdom on the OS "four principles of
detachment" (from her book The Four-Fold Way) was a key in my research.
Along with Harrison's palette of Hebrew stories and Kpelle ceremony and
Tibetan bardo teachings in his painting of OS.

But it hasn't been a constant feature in the larger university. In 2010 and
2011 I cohosted the faculty-staff opening retreat in OS with Heidi Nobantu
Saul. This year was the first that we returned to OS for our day of
re-gathering before the school year.

The MA in Leadership has offered OS in several of their one-week
residential student retreats each semester.

I'll clarify too: Harrison told me that as a storyteller he has filled his
palette with influences from around the world - but OS emerged from the two
martinis of course!

Not until afterward, in trying to understand this wonderous creation OS,
are the influences of some specific stories able to be made more clear.

[OSList] WOSONOS

2019-08-23 Thread Harrison Owen via OSList
WOSONOS is coming to Washington, as doubtless you know. It is sort of a
"return to the beginning." The site of the original, Day's Inn at Dulles,
has gone upscale and thus prohibitively expensive, but Suzanne Daigle found
what she thinks is a great place and I'm sure it is. Sounds like folks are
coming from all over and it should be GREAT as usual. I expect to be there,
but for the first night only, to join in what I understand to be a little
story telling. That will probably be the extent of my presence. There does
come a time in life when the available energy is not equal to the
opportunities - And WOSONOS is a wonderful, super high energy opportunity.
At least it always has been, and unless the magical wonder of self
organization has somehow been shut off (along with gravity and the Sun)
history will repeat. And there will be an Owen. I understand that Barry, my
son, has been asked to Open Space. You will love him. I do. And NO, this is
not the continuation of a Dynasty. It remains true that anybody can do it
given a good head and good heart. Have at it Friends, and I may be able to
Zoom in on occasion.

Hmm. Does Barry have children? Will any of them continue the OS royal
lineage? :)

Glad to know you'll be there for an evening Harrison, and that Barry is

Re: [OSList] Open Space training before WOSonOS

2019-08-23 Thread Birgitt Williams via OSList
Dear friends and colleagues,
I have a little story to share about the development of the module *Working
*with Open Space Technology. I fell in love with OST in 1992 when Harrison
came to Ontario, Canada to offer his first four day Canadian OST training.
The setting was the Five Oaks Conference Center of the United Church of
Canada. George Hermannson, Director of Five Oaks and Larry Peterson,
Director of the national Urban Core Support Network had heard Harrison
speak in 1990 and thus began their intention to sponsor a training, and to
bring Harrison to Canada. In those days, Harrison offered four day training
sessions in OST. Participants included primarily Directors of various
social service, religious, health and educational services, about twenty of
us.

I immediately started using OST in my social/health service organization.
Even though I was in the 'boss' senior staff position, I chose to be the
facilitator. One initial multi-day OST meeting with Board of
Directors/Staff/volunteers/community allies to develop the basis for a
strategic plan, followed by a monthly half day OST meeting to work on each
of the four themes that came out of the first OST meeting to further
develop our strategies for implementation.

There were many developments based on OST in the following three years. The
Board of Directors and the staff team of about 80 people participated in
active experimentation with me about using OST, what worked within our
organization, and what didn't work. The learning we did together led to the
development of this module of the Genuine Contact program, Working With
Open Space Technology. The finishing touches for the module came about when
I had assistance from a school principal, Monica McGlynn Stewart when
facilitating a large OST meeting. She was superb in her questioning of me
in why certain things were happening, what my thinking was, how I was
making the many many decisions I was making in my role as the
consultant/facilitator. Prior to that I was not aware of all of this
decision making that I was doing. Via Monica's questions which she tracked
on post it notes for me, I came to realize more that was needed in
facilitating the OST meeting.

Simultaneously, the Urban Core Support Network in most inner cities across
Canada under Larry's leadership started using OST for many types of
meetings including community engagement. The Urban Core Support Network
used a multi-day OST meeting for the annual conference. This gave me the
opportunity to be a participant in OST annually, to learn more about OST
including how we as an organization could benefit from the annual meeting
throughout the year...the benefits and trials of doing so.

I had my own experiences as a leader of long term use of OST in an
organization.
I had the experience of watching and conversing with Larry about his long
term use of OST in an organization.
This led to two articles published in Berrett-Kohler's Journal: At Work:
Stories of Tomorrow's Workplace.

All of this experience led to the development of the module Working with
Open Space Technology.

For those of you coming to WOSONOS, this offer of Working with Open Space
Technology by Anna Caroline and Thomas takes this module in their own
unique way, building on the original development via their own wisdom and
experiencesand their expertise in assisting others to learn.

If you cannot get to WOSONOS, and are in Europe, our colleage Doris
Gottlieb offers Working With Open Space Technology
Sept 3-5 in the Netherlands. And
our team at Dalar International offers the same module in an online
environment Oct 18, 25 and Nov 1 (three Fridays in a row from 9am to
12:30pm EDST
). We
also offer this 'on demand' as a self-study with one to one mentoring.

As Anna Caroline and Thomas say, this module is good for those new to OST
and also to those well seasoned OST practitioners. It is also valuable for
leaders who want to bring OST into their organizations as they learn how to
support the OST meeting...and its outcomes.

in genuine contact,
heart to heart,
Birgitt

WOSonOS:

Ah!! It’s in Washington DC in November?? When? where? I’ve decided to
join the golden oldies and come! Might as well have the entire history
present.😍.
Actually, dear Birgitt, I have an email version of the 1997 Barrett
Koehler OST At Work series you mention. I edited it. There were about 15
(or maybe more) articles about the use of Open Space in a whole variety of
places. I’ll put it on line as part of the historical artifacts collection!
And Day’s Inn was where one of the first conversations about OST
certification took place. Ah me! Too bad it’s so upscale now.

Love to all of you! Anne
