Re: [OT] New surface laptop
I actually ended up getting this zenbook flip. Requirements matched what I was after and can't complain about the price. Going well so far. Battery has been pretty impressive. Thanks for the tip! Re: [OT] New surface laptop
So I'm using the top-of-the-line Surface Book at the moment in my new gig. I must confess, the laptop has made a positive impression on me, specifically given I'm a visual thinker (who likes to sketch note in meetings). I will, however, say that the Pen sucks via OneNote but picks up its strength again via other products like Autodesk Sketch. There is still too much latency for the Pen which is a trigger for me. The in/out of tablet mode is buggy, and while I'd put that towards Windows 10 as being at fault, however, the Surface product line can't play the game of "it's not our fault, it's the OS" given if it's paired up against Apple the lines of ownership should in this context encompass OS + Hardware combined. Performance wise, it can handle large amounts of computation while not getting so hot that I can't touch the keyboard. So far its heat signature is on par with my Macbook Pro (which I bought 1x month ago as well). I'm not convinced to give up Macbook Pro entirely as whilst I enjoy the detachable tablet mode, it's not something that I'd miss if it were removed tomorrow yet.. --- Regards, Scott Barnes http://www.riagenic.com On Tue, Jul 11, 2017 at 6:38 PM, Tom Rutter wrote: > Nope still haven't got one, using the old lady's to get by. RE: [OT] New surface laptop
Did some googling. Seems like this isn’t just a problem with Surface Book? Threads on answers.microsoft.com (like this one: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfbook-surfperf/laggy-low-fps-performance-for-windows-10-ui-on/284760ee-3b16-4ece-9064-4b1428b5c4f7) have people with other models also complaining. I don’t use any UWP apps. And I don’t have this issue when I plug an external monitor into my SB. This is my second SB, and I’ve never had this issue AFAICT. Lots of other issues that were gradually resolved over time (Standby etc. not working, blue screens etc.) but not this one. Why buy a Surface over other laptops. Putting aside the alligances to Microsoft given the craft we choose, in all honesty what is it that sets it apart from competiting products. I look at it and I'm just unsure. I typically keep 1-2 laptops with me at any given time, because most of my tooling is OSX based but at the same time I prefer to write C# code on a Windows Machine (Parallels is fine for minor work etc). The “look” of items is different to performance (lag with updates, screen tearing etc.) I’ve set the scaling specifically for each monitor I have (rather than relying on Windows to “auto-pick”) so each time I plug in a previously identified monitor, I get the same experience. RE: [OT] New surface laptop
Yes it’s an OS problem which I believe based on whether Windows boots with the primary monitor as high-DPI or not. I’ve not confirmed if this is fixed in Anniversary Update, as I just stopped connecting my surface to external monitors after I got a dedicated dev box. Why would UI performance suck if the DPI were different? Sorry about that. Didn't mean to make another laptop thread, was only asking about the surface laptop. Hah didn't even notice that before you mentioned it. It's as if the designers did it just to make something wrong with the laptop. I've looked at so many laptops now that I'm over it all... Re: [OT] New surface laptop
We need to make laptop threads on topic. They happen so often we could almost make the list about them. :) My Dell xps 13 is ok but it felt lacking in performance. I suspect it's the aggressive power throttling. I may turn off the CPU stepping and see if it runs better. Recently got Razer Blade pro. Good except too heavy to be deemed portable and the sound is popping even after driver updates. Might just be a dud. Getting support on that which is delayed due to timezones. I don't think good laptops exist. They are a myth. On 3 Jul. 2017 11:20 am, Tom Rutter wrote: Anyone got the new surface laptop? If so, thoughts?
