RE: vs 2010 and 2012

2013-01-16 Thread Katherine Moss
The comparable edition to vproj in VS 2012 is Install Shield LE. And for
dialog design, if you wanted a point/click interface, you can use SharpSetup,
though I have not figured out how to make that program produce straight MSI
files instead only producing standard .exe files. And then you could use
InstallAware if you wanted to as well which also has a VS add-in that works
with VS 2012.

My last reason for using VS 2010 whilst still having VS 2012 installed was
due to lack of Crystal Reports support in the new IDE.

Thankfully, they've finally released an update that supports 2012 in the
last couple of days. So now I no longer have a reason to use VS 2010.

Yeah; I think Oleg's taking good care of us there. But the question is whether
he will make all features of WiX available through his framework, especially if
you have seen the proposal for WiX 4.0; it's a lot more involved with support
for different deployment technologies like nupkg, appx, and others, so WixSharp
could have a lot of catching up to do.

This project (WiXSharp) was first mentioned on CodeProject in late 2008 - I
would guess that Oleg Shilo has been tracking the changes in WiX since then
(WiX itself has certainly become more usable and full-featured since then).

2013-01-15 Thread Greg Keogh

You may recall a few months ago I was stung by this subtle and easily
missed change. As a migration test I opened all of my solutions in VS2012
and ran a bulk bouild and I was surprised when it hiccuped on dozens of
vdproj files! It's a serious impediment to quickly flipping over to VS2012
for all our live development.

There is a vdproj to WiX xml converter, but it produces reams of unreadable
xml and I didn't bother persuing it further. The output is useful as a
tutorial however.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well WiX was integrated into VS2010 and
managed to get a couple of simple setup projects working reasonably quickly
thanks to their good help and examples. However, old setup projects with
custom dialogs in them have me blocked at the moment as you have to design
the dialogs manually with x,y positions and lengths, a really tedious and
fragile process (is there a WiX dialog designer??). I also haven't yet
cracked how to make a WiX installer that behaves like an old IIS setup
project.

I spent all weeked in VS2012 and I notice that WiX setup projects now come
out of the box. I haven't tried one yet.

That implies that there is readable xml. :^)

wix isn't bad, but why in h*ll did they have to write it in xml? Too lazy
to write a text parser, you think?

I've been running both in parallel for about 6 months and haven't run into
any issues with either.

Yes, and it's even designed so that when you upgrade projects to 2012, hey
can (mostly) still be reopened in VS2010.

Only a few projects fail this - LINQ to SQL, and some reporting.

Most definitely yes. Be aware, however, that VS 2012 will install 4.5 over the
top of 4.0, so make sure that you test your applications on a 4.0 only box
before deploying.
