Hi Anne,

I coordinate Homebirth Access Sydney and
our last issue of Birthings magazine focused on Lotus Birth. It has a few birth
stories in it and other information regarding the practice, how to care for the
placenta, the reasons why women choose this option etc. I do have a few copies
left so if you would like me to send you one just email me your address and
I’ll pop it in the post.

There has been discussion on a committee I am involved with
regarding the practice of Lotus Birth and whether women should be
"allowed" this, I am familiar with this practice but a couple
of issues were raised  :

What evidence is available to support this practice ?

Why do women choose to do this?

Is there an increased risk of infection etc ?

When will the cord/placenta separate?

I believe in informed choice and I am keen to present this
in an evidenced based manner to allow women the choice.I have my own experience
and thoughts but additional research/ evidence would be appreciated.

Many Thanks Anne

Hi Di,

I'm sure it will be fine for you to come and have a look through.  The Birth Centre number is: 49 686404.   Our appointment days are Tues-Thurs, but on Mon & Fri we may or may not be there (doing home visits etc).  Hope to catch up with you.

Cheers

Hi to the Mackay Midwives,

I am going to be in Mackay for a few days next month and wondering if I can come and see your Birth Centre. Any suggestions on who to contact to arrange this. I am interested in how different midwifery models arrange their work as we are trying to get a caseload model up and running at Wyong (near Gosford). My husband would love to move there too but Im not sure I could handle the humidity!
Cheers,
 Di.

[ozmidwifery] Obs first visits

2005-10-21 Thread Sonja & Barry

Dear all,
I am hoping for some information about
midwifery/maternity units that don't require women to be seen by an obstetrician
at any stage throughout their pregnancy.  Info I need is do the
midwives listen for heart sounds etc, do they see a GP, or is this all quite
irrelevant and thus no needs to do any of these checks?  Some places call
this a first visit, whilst others may use these checks to "allow" women access
to birth centres etc.  I hope this makes sense.
Regards Sonja

Gillard calls for Medicare numbers for
midwives

Labor's health spokeswoman Julia
Gillard says it is time for the federal Government to get on with introducing
Medicare provider numbers for midwives, to ensure women are given choices when
they give birth.
Earlier this year, Health Minister Tony
Abbott said he would consider paying midwives Medicare benefits if their
patients had been referred by doctors.
Ms Gillard has told a state conference
of midwives in Sydney today that midwives should also be given access to medical
indemnity insurance.
"Whilst the Minister for Health, Tony
Abbott, has indicated some words of support about getting Medicare provider
numbers for midwives, precious little appears to have been done.
"Our call would be for the Minister to
get on with what he has said he is prepared to do and to be seriously addressing
the issue of provider numbers for midwives."

From Jeanine Parvati's latest newsletter on her

Our dear crone-sister is ailing. She is unable to

and is now in a hospice preparing to pass.

She is asking for her friends/sisters/kindred
spirits to tune in together at
noon on the 23rd of October for
13 minutes and to send her your prayer
tincture, she refers to this as settling her
spiritual affairs and suggests
that it is time to say what has been left unsaid.
