Re: [ozmidwifery] full moon

2005-11-14 Thread Alphia Possamai-Inesedy

Dear Kerreen,
Here is one:
The "Christmas Effect" and Other Biometeorologic Influences on
Childbearing and the Health of Women Sandra K. Cesario, RNC, PhD

J Obstet Gynecol Neonatal Nurs 2002 31: 526-535

Objective: To review the body of literature addressing
biometeorologic and chronobiologic effects on conception,
pregnancy, parturition, and other health conditions.

Data Sources: Computerized searches of MEDLINE, PUBMED,
CINAHL, and the World Wide Web.
Study Selection: Studies, including international
research, dating from 1938 to 2001.
Data Extraction: Data were extracted and information
organized under the following categories: influence of leisure
time and seasonality on the rate of conception and birth, the
relationship of meteorologic changes and lunar cycles to
childbearing, the "Christmas Effect" and its impact
on other health outcomes, and nursing implications.

Data Synthesis: Research from the disciplines of
biometeorology and chronobiology indicates that there are
patterns in the occurrence of conception, pregnancy, and onset
of labor that vary in timing and amplitude in different
populations and geographic regions. Consideration of these
factors should be included in the analysis of birth data when
planning and providing maternity care. The Christmas Effect is
one of the most predominant seasonal patterns that can be seen
in birth data throughout the world.
Conclusions: Biometeorologic and other cyclic phenomena
are underused in the United States in planning and providing
maternity care. These phenomena warrant consideration when
planning holistic health care.

Let me know if you are having problems accessing the full
text.
Take care
Alphia

Dear Justine,
I am meeting with senator Steve Fielding at 3pm this afternoon so I hope you
get this and are able to get that previous briefing to me by then. If not
then I will just use the briefings drafted by the ACMI for Julia Gillard.

Thanks,
Leanne.

Dear Leanne

On our last Canberra roadshow we briefed Sen Fielding (In September) so
this is really a good opportunity to show him that what we (Maternity
Coalition) have said is backed up by others in the community. From our
experience with Julia Gillard it is good for those who belong to MC to
identify this and show their support.

For those non-members, please JOIN, support our work, because together we
can get there!

Leanne good work organising this and will send the briefing through to you
so you know what we said.

In solidarity

Justine

[ozmidwifery] "When a Baby dies" workshops

2005-11-14 Thread Andrea Robertson

Hello Listers,

Sherokee Ilse will be out guest in February as part of the Preparing for
Birth and Parenthood Conference we are presenting at Sydney University. If
you haven't checked this out yet, here's the link to the full program and
all the details. Anyone who is involved in parent and prenatal education
will want to attend this Conference - a skills based event that will be
showcasing the best in this field.

While she is in Australia, Sherokee has agreed to facilitate a series of
workshops on "When a Baby dies - making a difference" especially for
midwives. This is an area where we all feel sensitive - knowing how to
handle this situation in a supportive way while dealing with the trauma for
ourselves. Sherokee has written many books on this subject and is the
leading expert on stillbirth, miscarriage and neonatal death in the
US. These workshops will have limited places, to ensure an intimate and
supportive environment in which to explore this difficult tropic, so early
registration will be essential.

The full details are here:

http://www.birthinternational.com/event/sherokee2006/index.html

If anyone wants paper copies of the program and registration details for
either of these events, please call our office on 02 9564 2322 and we will
post some out to you.

Regards,

Andrea

Yes!
I have been to Maggie Banks Midwifery Intensive and it was truly inspiring
and had a midwifery perspective whereas the ALSO course is very obstetric in
nature.

It is worth every cent!!

Hi everyone,

I was just wanting to know if anyone had been to Midwifery Skills for
Emergencies run by Birth International with Maggie Banks as the
facilitator.
It's just that it is quite expensive ($1095) , which is dearer than the
ALSO

course.
Thanks,

Joan

Re: [ozmidwifery] emergency skills

2005-11-14 Thread Sonja & Barry
I attended Maggie's course in July. Reaffirms midwifery and women centred
care. Shows how to deal with shoulder dystocia etc from a midwifes
perspective and focuses on working with women that do not have the first
intervention of bed dystocia, which, as we all know, is often the first
stage of an obstetric complication . It may be more expensive than ALSO but
this course covers all meals and accommodation as well. I would recommend
all midwives wanting to undertake an emergency skills course to attend this
one.

Re: [ozmidwifery] emergency skills

2005-11-14 Thread Sue Cookson
I attended Maggie's Intensive in October 2004 in New Zealand at Maggie's
house.
It's a wonderful workshop to either reaffirm the work midwives already
do, particularly if you work independently, or to give you many new
persepectives and questions about why you do what you do, where your
teaching/training comes from and to learn new skills based in
woman-centred tradition, not obstetric land!!

A very different perspective.
Sue

Re: [ozmidwifery] Melb Ob's Supportive of Lotus Birth

2005-11-14 Thread Sue Cookson

I'd have to add that if she is looking for 'permission' to have a lotus
birth, she needs to work harder to understand it is her right to make
choice irrespective of whether that choice is understood or supported
by others.
If she firmly stands in her place with her decision to have a lotus
birth, then those who are invited to her birth will oblige.
I have assisted women with lotus birth at home and in a variety of
hospital settings, including c/sections - she may have to stay very
firm about it - just like not cutting the cord early for other people.
All sorts of excuses may be made - what she says and how she says it
will determine the outcome.
The more people access their rights, the more familiar everyone will be
with the different choices people can make.

A girl in my forums has

possible and also Peter Lucas – but other than that I have no idea
where to start.

I've booked in to the course in Adelaide next year, and know a couple of
students who did it last year, they couldn't stop raving about it, in fact,
one of them is thinking of doing it again! Must be good...

Having heard Maggie speak several times before as a part of different
programmes, I can't wait to have her for a whole weekend, she speaks the
truth about how amazing women are, and what we can do as true midwives to
facilitate them...roll on March!

Dear All

Just a comment here, isn't ALSO a bit of a waste for IPM's or midwives in
models without on-site medical? As I understood it is a multidisciplinary
approach within a medical model type training.

I must say if that's the case then it is ridiculous that so many midwifery
models demand it. Bring on the Maggie Banks type of training and the Jan
Robinson shoulder dystocia workshops etc.

But hey I'm only a consumer
