RE: User Profile Service

2012-08-23 Thread Marko Salonen
Did anyone configure other services first, because the way I read the Harbar
procedure you don't. But then I thought UPS was dependent on other services? Or
does it only work with other services like Managed Metadata once configured...

Subject: User Profile Service

Hi All

Wow, what a week. I have been banging my head against a brick wall with this
one, and I feel defeated. Not a great introduction to SharePoint for my
colleagues, and I amazed that this is so difficult. To make myself feel a
little better I just remember that the leader of Kony 2012 got arrested before
Kony did! :)

Today I started from a completely clean environment. Recreated my service
accounts, and went over the accounts in
http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx step by step with our networking
guys, and followed the instructions to the letter. Alas to no avail.

When others have followed the instructions by Harbar, have you started any
other services? If yes, which ones?

To recap

Win 2008 R2
SharePoint 2010 SP1 July 2012 CU

SQL 2008 R2

I open the 1433 port
I create an SQL Alias
I set local admin access
I set local login

Run Config Wizard (not using the AutoSPInstall)

I then follow the Harbar instructions to create the UPS.

Regards,

Marko

Yes, R2. And I have configured the AD directory changes as required.

I think I am going to leave it for now, have a chillaxing weekend and look at
it again next week with fresh eyes.

Appreciate everyone's input!

Re: User Profile Service

2012-08-23 Thread Sezai Komur
Hey Marko,

The approach I take with setting this up in new non-prod environments is to:

Backup and restore the *ProfileDB* from production into the SQL Server of
the new environment, and also the *SocialDB*.
DO NOT restore the *SyncDB*
Use the following powershell to provision the service application:
New-SPServiceApplicationPool –Name "User Profile Service Application Pool"
–Account "DOMAIN\UPSAACCOUNT"
$upa= New-SPProfileServiceApplication –Name "User Profile Service
Application" –ApplicationPool "User Profile Service Application Pool"
–ProfileDBName "RESTORED_ProfileDB" –SocialDBName "RESTORED_SocialDB"
–ProfileSyncDBName "DOESNT_EXIST_YET_SyncDB"
New-SPProfileServiceApplicationProxy –ServiceApplication $upa –Name "User
Profile Service Application Proxy" –DefaultProxyGroup
Note the above command will create a fresh new SyncDB and reuse your
restored ProfileDB and SocialDB.

When completed, go in to the user profile service application and manually
recreate your synchronisation connection etc. and run a full sync.
The benefit of this approach is after you're done you should have your user
profile data from production restored into your new environment :)

I also restore the My Site content db from prod as as a seperate step as
well.

If your having dramas creating this, the above probably won't fix any of
your issues :(

When others have followed the instructions by Harbar, have you started any
other services? If yes, which ones?

To recap

Win 2008 R2
SharePoint 2010 SP1 July 2012 CU

SQL 2008 R2

I open the 1433 port
I create an SQL Alias
I set local admin access
I set local login

Run Config Wizard (not using the AutoSPInstall)

I then follow the Harbar instructions to create the UPS.

Marko

The notes I have are that the SQL must be SP1 CU2 (or higher).

From:

"You must have a full installation of Microsoft SQL Server, not the Express
edition. If you are using SQL Server 2008, you must have Service Pack 1
(SP1) and Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) "

RE: Infopath

2012-08-23 Thread Nigel Hertz
I've experienced that a lot. Sometimes running a full text crawl rectifies it,
but not always. I've found the easiest way to sort it out is to disable any
workflows that run when the form is modified, create a dummy column, open the
library in datasheet view, and then fill the dummy column with a 1 or
something. That forces it to refresh somehow.

I have added a field from Info-path form to share-point library as a column.

The new column is blank, to get it when I open and save info-path form the new

Is there any easy/faster way to populate the new column for existing forms,
then opening and saving 100's of existing forms

Hi Marko

Is your domain's NETBIOS name different to its Fully Qualified Domain Name
(FQDN)? This can add extra complexity with configuration.

On a SQL Server perspective, are you using a named instance of SQL or the
default instance? If you are using a named instance then you may have to open
additional ports. Search for "How to configure sql server to listen on a
specific port" for more details.

I recently had a challenge with configuring User Profiles because the GAC
didn't have the correct version of an assembly. I reran the configuration
wizard and then restarted the user profile sync service to solve this one.

These are related services/service applications and they are not mandatory for
the creation of UPS, they are required if you want make use of the full social

Hi

I have followed that to the letter, and I still get the unexpected error when
trying manage the UPS.

What I am doing now is manually configuring all the service (a good learning
exercise I suppose) and I was wondering if anyone happens to have a list of
services that should be running before I try to configure the UPS?

Cheers guys!
