Re: Palm dev print mags

2002-12-29 Thread Joe Biron
I subscribe to Dr. Dobbs (and I agree with the previous post that this
month's issue is painfully slim), and I think it's a little less than every
other issue, but I haven't really been noticing until now. I also subscribe
to a couple of Java programming magazines, and they feature J2ME articles
every single issue.

Joe Biron

Steve Mann once printed a magazine called Tap that dealt with
development for the Newton, and later Palm OS devices -- he sells an
archive CD that has all the articles, and there are some good ones
 there.

Thanks for the almost-correct plug Ben. It was (eventually) called
PDA Developers, never Tap (that was the old MADA magazine that
published about 4 issues before going belly up). Unfortunately, the
CD-ROM is not longer available, but it's not a great loss. We stopped
published in 1999. A lot has happened since then. Virtually 100% of
 the content is now obsolete.

It would be great to see a Palm developers magazine, but it's not
likely to happen considering the size of the Palm developers market.
Just MHO. Last time I looked (2+ years ago), Dr. Dobbs published
articles about hand-held development fairly often (every other
 month?).

 Regards,
 Steve Mann

As a new Palm developer (but an old crusty software developer) I
was wondering if there are any print magazines targeted for Palm
development, as opposed to mainstream consumer oriented PDA-type
 magazines.

nope, not yet :)

the thought has crossed my mind however to work on something like
this - i have a few topics i would like to write about :)

Otherwise, there really hasn't been anything in print -- the Internet has
killed the traditional programmer magazine. Handheld Computing has a
developer newsletter, but it just electronic, and its only been published
erratically.

Really the best sources of info are the mailing lists, the newsgroups, and
weblogs like my own palmoswerks.com.

Of course, the Internet resources are abundant and very effective, but I
really like receiving programming mags in the mail and taking them on the
train with me. Its perhaps a sentimental thing. I got interested in
programming as a result of my dad getting a subscription to Family
Computing. Ever since then I've voraciously read printed periodicals to stay
current.

Alas...

the Internet has killed the traditional programmer magazine.

Sad... I picked up a Dr. Dobb's Journal the other day for the first time in months,
and was shocked how thin and emaciated it has become.

Hey, maybe they have room for more Palm articles now. :-)
