Subject: Demo for Nero

Can someone tell me a website I can go to download a demo for Nero please. I
would like to try it out before I even think about purchasing it. I did go
to Nero.com and hit enter on the link for the download but when I installed
it and tried to use Nero it told me my demo session was over and it wanted
me to enter a user name and the serial number of the CD but I don't have a
CD of Nero since I haven't bought it yet and I haven't even been able to try
it out. The installation went fine so I am not sure what to do. If someone
can give me a step in the right direction it would be very much appreciated.

CLICKS AND SCRATCHES

Greetings!

Now I haven't been a user of CDEX for quite some time (over 18 months
having moved up a level to a more reliable CD ripper) but the problems
described from messages to this list (where clicks, scratches etc are
appearing at the beginning, at end of tracks or both) would appear to be
more of a CDEX problem rather than a MP3 issue, meaning that CDEX probably
needs some tweeking, sounds that some people's drives may not be compatible
with the settings that they have for CDEX etc and the problem should be
easy to identify and sort out.

The suggextion of editing the surplus noise from the file? Well... that may
be more of a nusance than its worth as the surplus noise could be masking
propper CD audio.

Re: cdex and scratches

2004-08-08 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Just to add to this thread. Looking over the CDEX manual, it appears the
track offset parameter that is the first edit box in the CDEX window should
be used for fine tuning track start. It is defaulted at zero but can be
incremented with each increment equating to a 75th of a second.

Although this could be used to fine tune where CDEX determines the start of
the track,
I think it would be quicker to rip and edit later for the number of times
you need to do this.

It would be interesting to see if any of the paid for rippers can do a
better job but I'd assume that this issue is with individual CD's and
suspect that even the paid for rippers would need some manual fine tune for
the odd track here and there? Many of the cases where there's a click or
scratch are where tracks actually merge into each other on the source CD.

I don't believe that ripping a track at a time would resolve this minor
irritation with CDEX and it would be more trouble than it's worth. To put
things into perspective, I get about one example of a click or scratch at
the beginning or end of a track for every 3 or 4 CD's ripped so it's not
really a big deal to trim it off. I normally review the ripped tracks
with
Winamp by starting the music in that folder and then using alt + R to move
me to within 5 seconds of each track's end thus allowing me to review the
end and start of each track and only trim those that have a click or
 scratch.

When I was using CDEX, I never experienced this problem, I've seen it but
not for ages and only one ripper I ever owned gave me the problem.

I'm sure that paid rippers will display this problem too! if the drive
paramaters are not set correctly or are incompatible in some way.

Unless I'm very wrong, each CD-ROM/CD-RW drive has its own offset values so
you'd have to find out what they are and I'm glad that CD ripping software
is allowing the entry of these valuses as it makes for accurate ripping.

In the case of EAC (Exact Audio Copy) you can make a test CD to dertermine
these values or use a CD marked in the EAC CD database, many pre-recorded
CD'S are lsited.

Hey, mint to reply but, didn't have time until now. I've noticed Skype
interferes with both Total Recorder and can interfere with Shoutcast if you
use that to stream. I will point out at this time that I haven't tried the

Hope this helps.

Subject: Windows Media Files and what to do with them

Hello Caroline and the list!

I once got a bunch of Windows Media Files from one of those download
services on a trial. Once I decided not to keep the service, the files
would no longer play. However, prior to dropping the service, I played the
files and recorded them through one of my recording programs that allows you
to record directly from your sound card. Then I saved each file in either
MP3 or Wav format, giving it a name, and then I had them all. You can use
Soundforge, Total Recorder, or CDEX to do this as follows:

(1) Set the volume control to what you hear.

(2) Turn off JAWS or your screen reader, but first locate and highlight the
song you want to record.
(3) Then start your recording program and then click on the song. Let it
play, then do the stop feature in your recording program. Then, if
necessary, reload your screen reader program. Save the program in the
default format for the particular program you are using. You can edit as
necessary, taking leading noise or blank areas or trailing blank areas or
sounds off; then saving it under your desired name. You could also record
many sounds; then do one of the marker features and save them in individual
blocks. Then go to your saved folder and find the files saved in your
chosen format. They can then be put on CD or saved on your hard drive as
desired.

I originally did this just for fun, but I later discovered I did the right
thing, as those WM files from the download company did not work, even though
they had given me a seven or fourteen-day free trial of the songs.

Just remember, anything that comes through the sound card can be recorded
with some of thes programs, so why not use them before they are taken away
from us.

James Robinson

P.S. I hope I'm not giving any trade secrets away.

My only comment would be that (no matter what programme you use to do such
a conversion) you'll be losing some quality in the end result so (unless
you have a very specific reason) I wouldn't bother. To my knowledge, the
only way of converting such a file is having the software decode the file
and then re-encode it again.

Hey, mint to reply but, didn't have time until now. I've noticed Skype
interferes with both Total Recorder and can interfere with Shoutcast if
you
use that to stream. I will point out at this time that I haven't tried the
newest Skype version. I downloaded the previous version, had some problems
with Total Recorder, got frustrated and took it off.

 Hope this helps.

RE: WMA to MP3 Conversion

2004-08-08 Thread Caroline Ford
Bob,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I don't have Sound Forge, but it seems as if Total Recorder
would be able to do this as well by recording directly from my sound card,
so I'll give that a try.

Regards,

Caroline.

Hi Caroline,
Soundforge will do this very nicely. When you save to mp3 format, you will
have the choise of what size template to use, 128 bit, 64 bit, etc.

2004-08-08 Thread Mister Lynn White
Norma!

I don't believe that it is possible because the countries cannot send
audio feeds to the United States because that would be in violation of
the rights given to NBC by the USOc and those rights are protected by
the International Olympic Committee.

Also, if memory serves me correctly, Westwood One also has radio rights
in the US as well.

ordering winamp pro

2004-08-08 Thread Jaffar Sidek
Hi folks. I am seeking help from any of you who possesses either a paypal account or
any internet credit card account that will allow a transfer of funds. I am trying to
purchase winamp 5.04 pro. Unfortunately, when I click the order link, i get an error
message saying that the product is not sold in my area and that I'll have to contact a
local vendor for what I want to purchase, which is actually very wierd indeed.
Anyway, what I need is someone with a paypal account or a credit card account to help
me purchase the product in question, and then I will transfer the cost via my wife's
paypal account back to my benefactor, as it were. Any help in this matter will be
greatly appreciated. So as not to clutter the list, whoever agrees to carry out the
transaction on my behalf should contact me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the
details so a smooth transfer can proceed. Thanks for your help in this matter.
