I know nothing about MP3DirectCut. What is it, and what can it do. Is
it
really better tha gold wave, which is cheap, easy to use, very
accessible,
and for which there are a set of excellent tutorials available from
 for-the-people.com. Cris Hall

Re: new high minidisk.

2004-11-09 Thread Roger Fordham
Hi,
It is possible for a blind person to use Sonic Stage. What I did was buy a
Mousemat, and having installed it, and run the Sonic Stage program, with a
little experimentation and a bit of help from a sighted friend, I put a
braille label on the mousemat where the icon came on the screen. Then when I
wanted to access it, I simmply tapped the braille label with the point of
the pen, and it activated the link. I found it quite easy in this way to
access links to things in this way. I have no vision at all, and it did need
some sighted assistance and a little patience to set it up, but it was quite
possible. I used a Sonnic program to burn Cds to a Sony player which was
brought out about a year ago, [Sony's answer to the Mp3 question], so that
you could store on one Cd about 25 or so normal-length cds. Using the
mousemat was the only way I could access the program. But it did work, until
I got fed up and found that I didn't use the player much anyway, so didn't
need to store lots of Cds just on to one.

Cheers
Roger

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Yes, Gary, it is very fast, for instance,
if I wish to delete an unwanted commercial from a broadcast that I recorded
with MP3DirectCut, I find the beginning of the offender, press letter B,
then use the right arrow to find end of offending commercial press letter
N.
Then hit Delete keey the offender is gone that fast.
Its quite easy to navigate thru the audio file because you can hear the
audio while pressing the fast forward or reverse (right or left arrow).
You can also alter the volume of the recorded audio.
There's much more but I haven't learned how to use the additional features
as yet.
I highly recommend it.

Hi,
Oh yes you have more then one option here.
Wehn winmx stuff is allowed on this list I can see no reason why bit torrent
couldn't be as they both serve as file sharing programs.

You can use
www.torrentstorm.com
This is the most accessible one.
You can also use the very good azurious, but it's much more demanding and
will probably only work with Jaws 5.0 and above.

Re[2]: mp3 direct cut

2004-11-09 Thread djc
I also use this fast program all the time. I record my shows on Saturday
evenings and when I go on the air I stream to a server and then my stream
is relayed to the regular broadcast server. So I put the stream on the air
a few minutes early and put up an Instrumental till I hear the switch at
the main server and then I know it's time to go. When I finish my 3 hour
show I just load it in to mp3 direct cut and kill the instrumental portion
at the beginning up to where my show starts. When the show is rebroadcasted
on Wednesday evenings it doesn't have the instrumental portion so it comes
on clean. This is a fantastic little program and easy to use.

Shawn, only that its faster easier to use, its faster because there's NO
conversion involved, NO .wav files or conversion involved.
When you record with MP3DirectCut, the audio is recorded as MP3 directly, no
wave files, hence its name:
MP3DirectCut.

That doesn't make sense. After all, whether you plug a jack into
your
sound card or hook wires to a jumper on your sound card it is an
analog
signal you're dealing with and there is no benefit one way or the
  other.

There is a benefit. If your are a high end audio person, you know
 that
lining in a tape-deck to a sound card does give you a loss in
  sound
quality, graininess, and even some buzzing called bus noise, not
  to
  be
confused with the common 60 Hz hum. This unit probably attempts
  to
allow you to record to and from the machine...directly, which may
  mean
that the bus noise and other artifacts may be non-existent.

 the

Re: Splitting a file with MP3 direct Cut

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Ann, yes, there is a setting for seconds but I don't recall just where I saw
it.
Successful splitting does vary from one file to another because the files
are not generally as clean consistent as we would hope. I once split a
file which finished so fast I thought it had failed, but when I found the
word found the number 17 was in front of it there were indeed 18 files,
I think you always get one extra.
The Jaws cursor is required to find things.
Best wishes for success.

MP3 Direct Cut splitting files works!

2004-11-09 Thread Ann
Hi folks,

After following some very handy directions, and thank you to the one who
posted them, I've managed to split my huge MP3 file down to manageable
proportions. The Detect Pause feature, with a bit of tweaking, worked
beautifully.

And, it was so fast even on my slow old machine.

I'd recommend this little program for anyone who frequently deals with MP3
files.

Re: running nero 6.6 demo

2004-11-09 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Jay.

Just enter your name and then tab to the demo button and press enter. When
you get the next screen which is an overview of what you'll get with Nero,
just press ok.

You will now have a fully functioning demo until the end of November I'd
guess.

I've recently upgraded to version 6.3 and used the free demo right
throughout October in this way. Tonight I've used the online ordering
wizard on the Nero website to buy a serial number. This was e-mailed to me
within 5 minutes and when entered into the serial number worked straight
away with no problems.

Regards.

Subject: running nero 6.6 demo

 Hi folks,
Just downloaded Nero 6.6. It has no help file, so I can't check this out,
but, in the configure button they want name, company name and serial
number. I'm a bit cautious about downloading serial numbers without
committing to purchase. Can I run the demo without doing that or should I
be less paranoid? grion Also, I'm not planning on doing all those
movie-oriented thingies. Does a less complete version cost less? Thanks,
 Jay

2004-11-09 Thread Bruce Toews
I'm glad you found a product that works well for you, and I may indeed add
it to my arsenal. But I need things like mixing capability for doing my
radio show, the ability to load in and include files of different
bitrates, and so on, and I sincerely doubt that this program can do these
things, so I won't be getting rid of Gold Wave just yet. Plus, for
personal use I prefer Vorbis over MP3, and Gold Wave supports all the
different file formats I need. Thankfully, we have access to the various
different programs that meet our differing needs.

I'm sure that the good folks at XM may not care about what I think.
But..okay..I ran the demo version of Jaws 5.0; that made it better..but
still very difficult to navigate! It seemed to want to refresh..or
something; I couldn't get to all the channel numbers; I feel this way: to
me..screenreadr friendly means having access to the program..no matter
what version you're running. Some of us just can't go updating their
screenreader every time Freedom Scientiffick decides to come out with a new
version of Jaws. Just my two cents. I can, (I think) mayb..navigate XM
with Magic. But I believe I'd rather be able to do it..using Jaws! The sad
part is that..I'm sure there are some really good things to be found on XM.
But what good is it if I can't access it?

Re: mp3 direct cut questions

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Donald, perhaps the following will help you.
One can rewind and fast forward using

cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move

faster than the first two. How many frames each pair moves can be set

via the menu system.

b: Marks the beginning of a selection

n: marks the end of a selection

Note, that one can have several selections simultaniously in one file.

To activate a specific selection, one can use the menu system of

Mp3DirectCut.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not

the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move

by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:

1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left

2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right

3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left

4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a

selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the

MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts

can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a

different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.

It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually

selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from

one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The

file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue

sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the

markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions

in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box

is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file

position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours minutes

and seconds alone. The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts, which I mentioned in my first

message about MP3DirectCut:

r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the

recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open

As much as I know, there's no pause function in the program.

s: Stops the recording.

 Hello,

I really don't know whether the problem is lowsy docs or my thick skull.
But I have played with mp3 direct cut for a little more than an hour but
am not getting the hang of it. I understand a few basics such as
navigating through a file, and setting the advance distance of the page
up and down and the right and left arrows. Beyond that, I am somewhat
 in the dark.

Question 1: I want to copy a segment of a large file to a different
file. How do I do this? I do understand how to mark the beginning and
 ending points.

Question 2: What are the specific steps to create a cueue sheet?

Question 3: What ar the specific steps to make a recording with this
 program?

Sure wish that Harry or some other user of this program would make an
mp3 file showing step by step how to use this program.

 Thanks.

sounds a bit like the auto

Writing and reading audio

2004-11-09 Thread Frank Deweese
I have a tape deck. However, I would like to copy some books I receive from
the library for the blind and physically handicapped. This might be illegal,
however, I could read them at a later date.
Could I use one of the special cassette players provided by the library?
I hope this doesn't sound too stupid.

Nero wave editor, are its features accessible by a screen reader

2004-11-09 Thread Larry Higgins
Hi listers,
I just bought and installed Nero Ultra Edition, and I see that there is a
sound editor among the features of this package. I'm just wondering if
anybody has found this editor to be usable with a screen reader. Are there
any keyboard commands that would facilitate its use?

I have used Goldwave in the past, but was hoping that I paid good money for
this suite that I could make good use of this editor.

If the answer is yes, please write and say yes, and if no, say no g. And
if there are any suggestions as to how to make the best of it, please
elucidate.

Oh, Sure, I record from Radio 4 BBC nearly every day.
I also record from cassettes with MP3DirectCut, as soon as you press the
space bar when you finish, the recording is saved automatically as fast
as
you hit the spacebar.
Then you have a great recording, instantly.
You can select whatever bitrates sampling as you please.
There are numerous features which I haven't found as yet.
You can fade in fade out.
You can split large files into separate tracks.
I'll never go back to SoundForge or Goldwave.

Subject: mp3 direct cut questions

Hello,
I really don't know whether the problem is lowsy docs or my thick skull.

Thanks.
Don Roberts

Re: Writing and reading audio

2004-11-09 Thread Curtis Delzer
You can use sound forge, the reverse options to reverse the right channel
of a stereo tape deck, thereby making your book available to you, then
change the sample rate from 44,100 down to 22,050Hz thereby also getting
the pitch right. I do it all the time.

Thanks so much to everyone who took an interest in this. Special thanks to
Harry for your many helpful tips on using the program. Thanks, too, to Don

I still love gold wave, and I think that it will always be my first choice
for the sound editing, mostly very simple, that I do, but this seems really
great, and will save considerable time when splitting files, in particular.
