Re: Need Help for dummies

2004-12-30 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Shannon. MP3, I think has to do with moving pictures, and MPG means
moving pictures group. WMA means Windows Media Audio, and RM means Real
Media. And of course, there is Og Vorvis. I hope this helps.

Subject: Need Help for dummies

Hello list,
I am slow in getting in the pool of digital. I would like to know if there
is info out here in the world written for dummies?
I am looking for digital stuff 1o1. Grin!
I would like to understand the different file types their advantages and
disadvantages. How they work and what to use them for and what uses them.
What is the definitions of all these abbreviations I hear floating around
in
my Alphabet soup.
If anyone has any info or places I can go to learn about this stuff I
would
like to expand my horizons.

I have found that I know just enough to confuse myself even more than
when
I knew nothing!

I have a really nice mini MP3 recorder /player but I haven't the foggiest
idea what all that stuff means in the manual. They left out the much
needed
Glossary of terms.
I need a pointer to the basics.
All I really know is that if I click on the file it should pop up in the
media player and do its thing. I have no idea how it works. How to
manipulate it or what I can do or not do to files.

Like Schultz said, "I know nothing!"
If you can help I would be so appreciative.
Shannon

re windows media player and labeling tracks

2004-12-30 Thread Cris Hall
Many thanks to Kevin and others who offered help with this. I have, at
long last, solved the problem. Somehow, the item labeled "song title" was
listed ahead of the item labeled "track" in the file name section of the cd
ripping options. I don't know whether those are the default settings, or
whether my inept bungling caused this to happen, but now that I have put
"track" at the top of the options list, the numbers come first, and
therefore, tracks will now play sequentially, as originally intended,
rather than alphabetically.
Thanks again.
Cris Hall

windows media version 10

2004-12-30 Thread Don Smith
Hi:
I would like to try windows media version 10, but, as I use win amp as my
default player, I don't want media 10 to take over.
If I install media 10, how do I stop it from being my default player and just
be able to use it when I choose?
Thanks

Hi Cris.

dialogue. The ripping tab has 2 buttons at the top of the page; one allows
you to change the folder to where you rip tracks and the other allows you to
change the file name format.

If I remember correctly, there's a combo box where you can check a checkbox
to have track numbers inserted at the beginning of the track name.

I uninstalled media player 10 a couple of weeks ago as I found it clashed

RE: running sound cards simultaneously

Right!
Well I should have said that I don't use any Screen Reading package with
software speech and if anyone wants to know my Screen Reading habits then
feel free to ask me off-list but (for the record) I'm a free thinker so it
naturally follows that I use Window-Eyes..

Ok, well I use 2 Sound Cards (or devices, which ever you like) here without
a problem though I don't use JFW or any software speech as this can
complicate issues, I have more computing power and resources at my disposal
etc but that's another topic for another day.
Firstly, I tather that in order to use more than one software device, you
need to be using Windows XP, I use XP here and I have no trouble though
I've never tried using more than one sound device with Windows 98, ME etc.
Second, I'm told that for best results its best to use 2 completely
different sound devices (the example is given below of both internal and
external sound devices which sounds fare enough to me, in my case I use the
internal sound device which is placed on my Mother board and an Audigy
Sound Blaster card, the system works well with these 2 devices).
Third, make sure that your devices are configured correctly from the
control pannel, I have my Internal device configured so that all system
sounds and events are played through it. If I want to do any further
configurations for the sound devices I do those directly from other
applications, (Winamp for instance, I go into the Output Tree of the
Preferences and configure the Waveout plug-in to play directly to my Sound
Blaster Audigy which is connected to my audio system), the trick seems to
be to bypass (wherever possible) that Microsoft Sound Mapper, and (if
installed) to Total Recorder driver etc.
Finally, be sure tthat all drivers for all sound devices are
up-to-date. Be sure that the internal sound device (if you're planning to
use one) has been enabled from the CMOS and take note that Windows XP may
not be able to find some sound devices automatically so the option of using
a hardware speech synthesizer comes into its own here.
Cheers

Re: Burning CD's what do i need what to do and how to do it

2004-12-30 Thread Susan Wojtecki

I have purchased/downloaded several tracks from Wallmart.com which are in
.wma format. I don't know the steps to burning them using Windows Media
Player but was hoping to find a way to burn them along with other .mp3 files
to a CD. I suspect the answer is no, but is there a program that will allow
me to burn from both formats without having to convert the .wma files to
.wav or .mp3 with a probable loss of quality? I'd appreciate if anyone has
ideas on the best way to do this. Many thanks in advance.

Bruce! A number of M-Audio cards come in at well under $200 these
days. The famous Audio Phile 2496 is only $120 right now. Check them out

digital conversion and back are very well understood and high quality can be
found in the most inexpensive of audio devices. People who are convinced to
pay hundreds of dollars for better analogue to digital converters and
digital to analogue converters are being cheated.

I am slow in getting in the pool of digital. I would like to know if there
is info out here in the world written for dummies?
I am looking for digital stuff 1o1. Grin!

I would like to understand the different file types their advantages and
disadvantages. How they work and what to use them for and what uses them.
What is the definitions of all these abbreviations I hear floating around in
my Alphabet soup.
If anyone has any info or places I can go to learn about this stuff I would
like to expand my horizons.

I have found that I know just enough to confuse myself even more than when
I knew nothing!

I have a really nice mini MP3 recorder /player but I haven't the foggiest
idea what all that stuff means in the manual. They left out the much needed

Shannon

Re: Talking books todigital files

2004-12-30 Thread Joy Tilton
What i do is, since I have the use of a four track recorder of the multitrack
variety, I record with sound forge tracks 1 and 3 off the recorder, 1
completely panned to the left and 3 completely panned to the right. I record
all this at 1 and 7/8 speed off the recorder and at a sampling rate of 44/100.
Then when I'm done, I'd select the content off a single channel and copy it to
aanother window that is set for mono at a sampling rate of 22/050, then save
the mono file according to the side number.
Tracks 1 and 3 are what I use since they both play in the same direction and
one does not need to do any reversing. Of course, again, this is for those of
us with multitrack tape recorders.

a problem though I don't use JFW or any software speech as this can
complicate issues, I have more computing power and resources at my disposal
etc but that's another topic for another day.

Cheers

Microsoft Anti-Spyware Preview

2004-12-30 Thread Roger R. Cusson
 This article is taken from

 http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/ms_antispyware_preview.asp.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware Preview

On December 17, 2004, Microsoft announced the acquisition of an
 anti-spyware company,
surprising many in the industry. The acquisition is notable for two
 reasons. First,
Microsoft had already revealed its intention to get into the
 anti-spyware market.
Second, the company it purchased, Giant Software Company, was largely
 an unknown
in the industry. But in a rare moment of luck, I'd actually been a fan,
 customer,
and advocate of Giant AntiSpyware, as their anti-spyware solution is
 logically named,

for several months. In fact, I've found it to be far more effective
 than the industry
darlings, Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. And I've been
 recommending it to
 friends and family ever since.

But wait, the luck doesn't end there. While my experience using Giant
 Antispyware
gives me a unique perspective of this product, I was also lucky enough
 to interview
Giant co-founder Andrew Newman just days before his company was
 purchased by Microsoft.
Newman discussed with me Giant's plans for future versions of the
 product, including
 a centrally-managed enterprise version
that, I suspect, played a large part in Microsoft's interest. Newman
 explained
to me why Giant's approach to tackling spyware is superior to that of
 the competition,
and provided some valuable insight into how spyware can be confronted
 and defeated.

 First, a bit about Giant
Giant Software Company was founded by Ron Franczyk and Andrew Newman in
 Chicago in
November 2000. The pair were both working in corporations and were
 frustrated by
spam and the horrible anti-spam solutions that were available at the
 time. Rallying
around the message "Online Peace of Mind," the two started Giant
 Software Company
with the goal of creating a better anti-spam mousetrap. The resulting
 product, Giant
Spam Inspector, now protects over 2 million email inboxes from spam.
Despite their name, Giant Software Company was never a giant company.
 It grew from
the two cofounders to 11 employees who are today based in Chicago,
 Atlanta, and New
York, and it also sells a pop-up ad blocker and the anti-spyware
 solution that we're
now most interested in. But Giant has been profitable and
 self-sustaining since its
inception, Newman told me, and its products are currently used by
 almost 1 million
customers. That success, he said, has been driven by Giant's
 community-based approach.
"We decided to leverage the power of community and create an anti-spam
 community,"
he said. "Many products are like that now, including Cloudmark and
 others. But there
wasn't anything like that four years ago. We allow the Internet
 community to help
us solve a huge problem, and we build into that system an intelligent
 approach to
anti-spam that combines [traditional anti-spam] rules with heuristics."

About a year ago, Giant began looking into anti-spyware for both
 consumers and enterprises.
Here, the company knew it could use some of its existing anti-spam
 technology. But
it also solidified its community-based approach into a community Web
 site called
Spynet, which helps ensure that Giant customers know about spyware
 threats before
anyone else. Spynet was an immediate success, with over 200,000
 contributors in its
 first month alone.

 Why Giant AntiSpyware is better
Because many of the companies that are getting into the anti-spyware
 market come
from an anti-spam background, they tend to bring with them the habits
 and methods
that worked there. That makes some sense, Newman told me, because
 spyware is essentially
an extension of spam, or the technological successor to spam. However,
 Newman told
me that battling spam and spyware are not identical. That's because
 spyware is typically
more pathological and invasive than is spam.
"Windows was developed as a platform, and is extremely extensible, so
 we can integrate
into the system," Newman said. "The problem is, anyone can do that,
 including malware
writers." To effectively fight spyware, he said, you need software that
 can do more
than just look at a file, poll a list of known bad files, and identify
 it as good
or malicious. Spyware often imitates legitimate files, or finds ways of
 hiding itself
on your system. For this reason, Giant AntiSpyware uses logic that is
 based partially
on feedback from Spynet to examine the "genetic fingerprints" of files
 and determine
whether those files are valid. "We can detect variations of files,"
 Newman said.
"The way anti-virus works is it looks at strings and patterns in file.
 This looks
at the file as a whole. They're completely different approaches."
Indeed, the signature-based methods used to combat spam are ineffective
 against spyware,
because the methods spyware use to attack your system change so often.
 Newman said

Giant AntiSpyware provides a three-pronged attack on spy

Greetings!
I got a Panasonic rxD29 CD radio cassette recorder for Christmas and I'm
thinking of reviewing it for this list, would anyone be interested?
What's so special about this boom-box? Well, it plays MP3 and WMA files on
either CD-ROM or CD-RW CD'S and does this job very well with a choice of
decoder software, various surround-sound modes etc.
To my knowledge, this portable is the first of its kind made by a leading
consumer electronics manufacturer to be marketed in Australia, and as far as
I'm aware, other manufacturers like Sony etc are not marketing any such
device
with so many detailed features etc. Teac have a CD radio which will do the
job
at half the price but... well... you get what you pay for and the Teac is a
toy compared to the Panasonic beauty.
Its odd really as you see plenty of CD walkmans and CD micro/mini systems
which
play MP3 but not too many boom-boxes which do it.
Anyway if their is enough interest? then I'll draft my impressions.
Its interesting to note that these things can be a bit hard to track down,
all
the places that my Father visited before Christmas had run out of stock.
