I didn't even realize programs like that existed. Somebody needs to
write an accessible one. Intel Active Monitor, which came with my
system, was horrible. I wound up disabling it.

I too view Dana's approach as easier.
Personally, rather than maintaining a webpage with the links, I just store

For those who have never looked at Dana's listings, if you are an info

2006-09-14 Thread Dana S. Leslie
I, too, have a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit External. The software that
Creative supplies with it is, so far as I know, entirely graphical and
entirely inaccessible. You'll need sighted assistance, if that's the only
way to control the volume on your rear speakers.

Personally, I don't use the Creative software, at all, just the Windows
volume control. But, then, I'm not driving four speakers with the
SoundBlaster. I run a patch cord out of the front speakers jack into my
stereo receiver's auxiliary input.

Besides, once you visit the ACB Radio listening link, you can bookmark

2006-09-14 Thread Mike Pietruk
Bruce and Dana

That's a great way to do some sharing. My personal hesitation in doing so
are two:

(1) Some links that I bookmark are best not disclosed such as proprietary
links to subscription services. One that immediately comes to mind are
the individual links to NFL team feeds.

(2) I am constantly playing with my favorities adding, deleting, et al.

Mike

p.s.: I will have to take a look at your list, Bruce, as I haven't done
so in quite a while.
I now recall, a couple of years back, working with you on figuring out the
individual daily links for the various Paul Harvey broadcasts.

 Thank you, Mike!

I, too, used to just store all my links in the IE Favorites. But, then, I
set up my own web site, and I needed content! So, I created a Media page.
And, once I created it, I just kept expanding it! grin

I too view Dana's approach as easier.
Personally, rather than maintaining a webpage with the links, I just
 store
 them in ie6 favorites.
For those who have never looked at Dana's listings, if you are an info
junkie or a public radio one, you may discover some streams you weren't
 aware of.

We're all entitled to our prefered method of downloading music, and if you
don't like this then delete this message.
Last time i checked, we were living in the united states of america, which

Hi, fellow Earthlings! I'm trying to download some music for a young

allofmp3.com. It's a bunch of stuff by Tim Wilson which I'm told is

So, what have you all found to be the most accessible download sites?
  I

Article: Microsoft Officially Unveils Zune

2006-09-14 Thread Steve Pattison
This article is taken from the Beta News home page at
www.betanews.com. -Steve.

Microsoft Officially Unveils Zune
By Nate Mook,
BetaNews
September 14, 2006, 12:32 PM

As expected, Microsoft on Thursday took the wraps off its Zune
portable media player,
set to be available in time for the holidays. Zune features a 30GB
hard drive, wireless
connectivity and will come in three colors. But pricing has not been decided.
Microsoft confirmed a number of expected features about its new
player, which is
being manufactured by Toshiba and has become one of the worst kept
secrets in the
technology industry. Zune sports a three-inch LCD display that can be
viewed in portrait
or landscape mode, and includes a built-in FM tuner.

The device will be available in three styles -- black, brown and
white -- and the
interface can be customized with pictures.

But connectivity is what Microsoft hopes will set Zune apart from its
competitors,
and give it a shot at lessening Apple's dominance in digital music.
With built-in
802.11b/g Wi-Fi, users will be able to share selected full-length
sample tracks,
homemade recordings, playlists and pictures with other Zune users
wirelessly. Not
all songs will support sharing, however.

The digital music entertainment revolution is just beginning,
remarked Zune lead
J Allard. With Zune, we are not simply delivering a portable device,
we are introducing
a new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and
helps people
find new music and develop new social connections.

Songs shared with others can be listened to up to three times in
three days. The
idea, of course, is that if a user likes a track their friend has
sent them, he or
she will go purchase it from the Zune Marketplace. The Marketplace is
Microsoft's
new online music store that will offer a la carte downloads and a
subscription service
called Zune Pass.

Zune Marketplace will also support
Microsoft Points, which were developed for the Xbox Live Marketplace
and can be purchased as gift
cards at a variety of retail outlets.

Other features of Zune include the ability to import music from
iTunes and Windows
Media Player, although songs purchased from Apple will not be
compatible with the
player. Software upgrades will also be provided by Microsoft, which
says the future
is filled with possibilities due to the built-in wireless capability.

Zune is slated to go on sale in the coming months, but no specific
launch date was
announced Thursday. Also noticeably missing from the Zune unveiling
was a price.
But Microsoft did announce three accessory packs, also without
prices: the Zune Car
Pack, A/V Pack and Travel Pack.

Re: USB Mic Question

2006-09-14 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Sly,

If it's anything like my Logitech USB head set (which I expect it is) it
should appear as an additional device in the Windows Playback and Recording
volume controls, and in the Default audio Device selection drop-down, in
Control Panel. When you want to use it as a mic, you'll have to select it
from the recording volume control, and, when you want to use it as a
playback device, you'll have to select it in the playback volume control,
just as you do any other input or output device.

One thing you should be aware of, though: Because it's USB, if you leave it
plugged in all the time ()as I expect you'd want to do), it's likely that,
each time you reboot your computer, it will make itself the default output
device for Eloquence, if you use JAWS. This can be prevented with an edit to
jfw.ini. Let us know if you need instructions on this modification.

Blessed Be,

Dana

Subject: Accessible beyond-a-doubt legal music download sites

Hi, fellow Earthlings! I'm trying to download some music for a young
  person
who doesn't have access to a computer, and this stuff is not on
allofmp3.com. It's a bunch of stuff by Tim Wilson which I'm told is
available from Itunes and maybe Walmart? Well, I don't like using
  Walmart.
So, what have you all found to be the most accessible download sites?
  I
used to use emusic but found I couldn't find much on there to my
  interest.
Any help? Thanks lots in advance!

I too view Dana's approach as easier.
Personally, rather than maintaining a webpage with the links, I just
  store
  them in ie6 favorites.
For those who have never looked at Dana's listings, if you are an

  weren't
  aware of.

Sunshine,

below is a copy of a section from my jfw.ini. Note the line I have marked
with asterisks. You should insert the same line (without the asterisks, of
course), in the same relative position, in your jfw.ini; only substitute the
exact name of the sound device you want Eloquence to use as its default, for
the C-Media Wave Device, in my jfw.ini. be sure you copy the name of the
device you want to be the default exactly as it appears in the default audio
device selection drop-down, in control Panel, preserving exact spacing and
case.

After you do this, exit and restart JAWS, and the device you have specified
should be Eloquence's default, thereafter. Good luck.

Blessed Be,

There are a lot of good reasons to shop at Walmart.
Visit your local Walmart and you might actually be surprised just how much
they carry including computer related and audio items.
And as for the argument they drive independent merchants out of business,
so do almost any chain store for their mass buying power (pplus extended
hours of operation) provide consumers what they want.
And, amazing as it might sound, they actually employ people creating jobs
for the community.

Ok, call me a cynic, but why in hell would I want to buy a portable
device I can't transfer my collection to? From how i understand
this, maybe I've got it wrong, the article didn't mention anything
about supporting standard mp3s, or even Ogg Vorbis, and I've got a
lot of stuff in those formats. and what's this crap about putting
limits on the number of times I can listen to a song? Ok, so they
want me to go buy it, ok. I'm just not a big fan of these

2006-09-14 Thread Brent Harding
I actually went in the device properties and unchecked some map through or
some option like that whose context-sensitive help mentions wanting to turn
the particular feature off to make the device not become default. I was
disappointed to find that these don't have a mixing option for recording so
that you could shoutcast or do podcast demos where you want JFW or other
audio in the recording. Of course you could record both separately and piece
it together, but that seems like a lot of work.

Hi,
Chris nailed my concerns here. I'm not ever going to touch windows
media. If the thing doesn't support OGG and line in recording, it's a
waste. Give me an Iriver with Rockbox any day, not to mention all these
features will be inaccessible, because the thing most likely won't run
any standard operating system. And they haven't set a price, which

I seriously think that while this is a good device, Apple is going to

 Microsoft Officially Unveils Zune
 By Nate Mook,
 BetaNews
 September 14, 2006, 12:32 PM

As expected, Microsoft on Thursday took the wraps off its Zune
 portable media player,
set to be available in time for the holidays. Zune features a 30GB
 hard drive, wireless
connectivity and will come in three colors. But pricing has not been
 decided.

Hello. We add contacts by sending/receiving requests right? Now my question
is, how can I add the person's name in my list if I just called him/her? I
think it is related to the Skype out? I hope my question is clear.

Thank you very much,
Jouie

and they censor the music. Whatever you may think of a lot of the lyrics to
hip hop and rap songs, it's not a merchant's place to play big brother and
censore it.

why would anyone shop at walmart when they are nonunion and drive so many
small family businesses out of existance? I don't care how accessable they
are; principle has to come first sometimes.

   Thank you, Mike!

I, too, used to just store all my links in the IE Favorites. But,
   then, I
set up my own web site, and I needed content! So, I created a Media
   page.
And, once I created it, I just kept expanding it! grin

I too view Dana's approach as easier.
Personally, rather than maintaining a webpage with the links, I just
   store
   them in ie6 favorites.
For those who have never looked at Dana's listings, if you are an
   info
junkie or a public radio one, you may discover some streams you
   weren't
   aware of.

Looking for some help

2006-09-14 Thread John Moore
I am trying to find a way to get old Prairie Home Companion sound
clips of Emily Shackleton that were made in 1996 into mp3 format. They
are Reel Audio files with a .ra extension. Gold Wave doesn't even
recognize that the files are there. I am not going to buy Sound Forge
as I am already a Gold Wave enthusiast. Is there either a plug-in for
Gold Wave or a separate program I can use to convert Reel files to mp3
files? And also, how accessible is the program if there is one?
Thanks.

A cheaper way to go, unless you already planned to buy Sound Forge,
is to investigate Replay Converter
