 Gary,
Do you have your computer incorporated into your Home Theater system?
 That's
what I ultimately want to do, but when I did so a few months ago, my
computer screen didn't read well on a HD TV. The wife said all characters
looked weird, but I only have composite and S video out on my video card
 and
no adaptor to accommodate the 16:9 TV screen.
Don't quote me on this, but I heard the BK Audio Components AVR
 507receiver
will allow software programs, such as JAWS to be loaded onto it's system
allowing blind folk to use it more easily. I'm currently running an Onkyo
989 version 2 THX Ultra 2 receiver and considering a few other options now
as I'm trying to sell the Onkyo.
JVC has wireless PC hook up capability as well as Sirius satellite radio
built right into the 702B model. So, I'm considering the BK as mentioned
above or the JVC once I sell my Onkyo, or I might just wait to see if
 Onkyo
has an upgrade soon with newer HD features.
I also like to use a few surround features when playing music.

 Best Regards,
 Cornell

  Hi Cornell

The Nad c320b is an integrated amplifier. I do not need a home theter
system so I went for a simple amplifier to listen to music.

This is a very simple integrated amp with no bells or whistles, like we

Perhaps I should have stated this in my original message. The reason I

And I must say that the few times I listened to music on home theater

Re: Information and help needed regarding MP3 players

2007-04-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not familiar with the Sony series you mentioned, but what kind of
MP3 player are you looking for? Are you looking for a compact flash
based MP3 player that has maybe 1GB or 2GM of storage, or are you
looking for a hard drive based player that has 20GB, 40GB or more of
storage?

With the compact flash based player you have several choices. The one
that I'm familiar with is the Nomad MuVo from Creative. Unfortunately,
Creative doesn't distribute it anymore, but you might find one on the
web somewhere. It doesn't have a display and just a few buttons to
adjust the volumen and volume and skip from song to song. There are a
few other similar options on the market, like the iPod Shuffle. The
nice thing about the MuVo that I have is that it doesn't come with any
software, it's just a UMS device on your computer and you can use
Windows Explorer to move MP3's over to it. It also plays WMA and DRM
files, so you can use it with Audible and Overdrive.

In the area of a harddrive based MP3 player, I recently just got myself
an iRiver H10 20GB MP3 player and I loaded the Rockbox firmware on it.
You may need some patience and sighted help to get this working, but if
you do, you end up with a device that has spoken menus and even spoken
song titles, although it doesn't have TTS built into it. You can still
get the iRiver H10 on line, in a 5GB, 6GB and 20GB version. I got mine
recently from woot.com for $99.

Sorry I don't have information on any newer players, but I'm just
sharing my personal experience and remember, these are just my
opinions. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

I have recorded. I also don't need something with a radio built in since
I own several AM/FM radios that work fine with headphones and can be used
 for that purpose.
also I wouldn't mind just being able to forward and rewind through the
songs, because I really don't want to have to spend a lot of money, and
anyway, I would just have them all arranged in one folder.
I quite liked the look of the Sony, it was very nice and small, and the

could get the software to work even slightly with Jaws, and so I really
didn't learn too much about the player itself.

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of one of the smaller flash
players with 1 or 2 GB, although the iriver one sounds interesting. Our
access to sighted help is somewhat tenuous since the person who could help
us is a partial who gets headaches when looking at the screen too long.
As I said before, I would be happy with a machine that I could simply hook
up to the Usb port on the PC and just drag files into it and as long as I
know where the basic navigation keys on the player are that would be fine.

Talksina,

1. When I play a stream in Screamer, it plays through the same sound card (my
default card) as JAWS. Doesn't this mean that any recording I make will capture
JAWS, as well as the recording source? Is there a way to isolate the recording
source from JAWS.
2. I've found the menu option to begin a recording. Is there a keystroke that
can be used, instead? And how do I stop or pause a recording?
3. I've found where I can set the recording bit rate. But is there a way to
choose a format other than mp3?
4. When I click on the menu option to Open Recording folder, it takes me to my
root directory. Is there a way to specify another folder in which to place a
recording.
5. When I first start the program, the JAWS focus is on an up-down slider
labeled Information, and set to 100%. What is this control?
6. I've found the presets menu. How do I add additional presets of my own?

These are the questions that have occurred to me so far. I'm sure I will have
additional ones as I proceed.

Thank you.

Hi Gary,
I had the same experience on the BK audio site as well. I’ll hold on to
this email through the weekend and will forward privately so I don’t clog
things up on the list. IOW: I will get info for you and send it along.
I had my eye on a unit via EBay had I sold my system. I kind of glad I
didn’t though, unless I could get into the BK unit. I have an older BK
4090 preamp, but the remote went bad, so I sold my power amp about two years
ago and jumped into the Flagship Onkyo receiver. After further research, I
realized how much of a step down the JVC would’ve been, so I moved on from
it. Although it has some nice features, it’s not TXH Ultra II certified.

Best Regards,
Cornell

Re: Screamer Radio?

2007-04-06 Thread Martina Letochová
Hi Dana!

1. When recording JAWS doesn't interfere in it.
2. As far as I know there is no shortcut to start and stop recording;
anyway, there is a rec button when you alt-tab once when you're in the
main up-down slider so just press space on it if you want to record and
again to stop recording; or simply go to the recording menu and begin or
stop recording from there.
3. There seems to be no other formats than MP3 or OGG if the stream is in
OGG format.
4. You can set another directory for recordings by going to preferences
under the settings menu and then to the recording card; then tab twice and
you will find a button which JAWS won't specify but just press space on it
and you'll get to the dialog box to find a new directory.
5. The up-down slider info is the volume; 100% is the highest so just move
the up and down arrows to get a lower volume if you wish; BTW, if you lower
the volume it doesn't have any influence on JAWS.
6. The presets are updated automatically and you'd better not add to them or
then your additions would be deleted by the new automatic update anyway, but
you can add new stations by yourself to favorites instead.

Hope this helps.

Minor League Baseball on the Net

2007-04-06 Thread Tony Swartz
I learned earlier this year that a triple A minor league team moving into my
area would be carried on the net. Last evening I brought up the site and
found that the broadcast was through MiMLB.com a division of MLB. The site
uses the same media player, and the login is almost exactly that of Game
Day. I then assume that the fidelity would compare to that of Game Day. When
the broadcast began I was astounded at the higher quality. It was though I
was tuning into an FM broadcast of the radio station carrying the game. I
realize that Game Day at $14.95 a year is a bargain, but surely after
several years at it, I would have expected an improvement in Game Day's
sound.

1. When I play a stream in Screamer, it plays through the same sound
card (my default card) as JAWS. Doesn't this mean that any recording
I make will capture JAWS, as well as the recording source? Is there
a way to isolate the recording source from JAWS.
No, Screamer doesn't capture Jaws sound too. Don't know why and how,
but with Screamer you record pure and clean audio streamings, without
any disturbance by the annoying Jaws.

2. I've found the menu option to begin a recording. Is there a
keystroke that can be used, instead? And how do I stop or pause a recording?
Navigating the Screamer Radio window, you find all buttons. volume
control (slider), then Play (alt+p) which becomes stop (alt+s) during
playback. then Mute/unmute (alt+m), then Rec (alt+r) to toggle
recording on and off.
I explain you the Mute button later.
Of course you do not have it announced, if recording is on or off,
but if you have doubts you can verify it from the recording menu,
if it says begin it means it's stopped, otherwise, it's recording.
And another fast way to verify if it's recording or not, after
having pressed alt+r key, is with the status bar reading command,
insert+page down
It says Playing... if it's just playing, and recording...if it's
recording. The streaming comes aut clear, so, it does not care of Jaws speaking
In the status bar it also reads the direct URL (source) of the
current station, and how many seconds of playback. But, you just need
what it says first, so, when you hear Playback... or Recording... you
press the ctrl key to make it be silent!

3. I've found where I can set the recording bit rate. But is there a
way to choose a format other than mp3?
No, there is no other format. It just streams into MP3.

4. When I click on the menu option to Open Recording folder, it
takes me to my root directory. Is there a way to specify another
folder in which to place a recording.
Of course there is. Go to preferences, recording tab, and when it
says saved press tab and you find a ..., which is the browse
button. There you can choose whatever folder you want.

5. When I first start the program, the JAWS focus is on an up-down
slider labeled Information, and set to 100%. What is this control?
It's the volume control. Just turn up and down pressing up and down,
or right and left, arrows. Usually it speaks, but for example with
jaws 8.0 in my workstation here in the office, it doesn't (the
braille display follows me, but not speech)
and at home, with jaws 7.10, it speaks properly. and also in my
sighted boyfriend's computer, where I installed a jaws 5.10 to play
around configuring his toy, it works.
Let me explain some things about main window.
First you have the volume
Information is not the label of the slider, but the title of the group box.
if you navigate the window with jaws cursor, going up from t he
slider (route jaws to pc and then up arrow), you will find, under
information, the name and URL of the station and eventually the
song currently playing, then the buttons, and in the end, the status bar.
Let's assume your volume is OK as it is now.
you tab, and find play (alt+p)
it will say, playback play button. Playback is the title of the group
box containing the controls (play, mute and rec)
The Play, of course, becomes Stop when you are playing and/or
recording a station, and so, the access key from alt+p becomes alt+r.
after play, you tab again and find Mute
The name is quite ambiguous, because it seems that pressing it will
make our computer silent.
But that's not.
Pressing Mute, just stops the playback. But the Jaws continues
speaking, and also, it does not affect the recording in any way!
It means that you could start Screamer Radio and begin recording, not
to miss your favourite talk show while studying, and keeping it silent!
Unfortunately it's not possible to schedule the recording, that is,
telling Screamer to start and stop recording at a user-defined time.

6. I've found the presets menu. How do I add additional presets of my own?

Unfortunately you cannot play with presets
Presets are managed by the Screamer Radio developers, there is a
forum on the site, where stations can be suggested, unfortunately the
forum has the visual confirmation to register, I just asked David
(the developer) to resolve the issue via AntiBot question but he did
not answer me
Unfortunately again, in this period, Ludvik, the Presets man, is
away, so he cannot keep presets up to date, I am trying to find a way
to help them
You can add your favourites, using the favorites menu (remember that
when you add a station you must put title, URL, and the source is
usually filled with the url you are currently listening to)
but favorites cannot be arranged by genre, language, region, etc
I hope I have been satisfying your requests

Actually I have found that alt+r can be used to start and stop recording.
You need to use jaws key numpad 3 to read the status bar to tell if it is

 Hi Dana!

 1. When recording JAWS doesn't interfere in it.
 2. As far as I know there is no shortcut to start and stop recording;
anyway, there is a rec button when you alt-tab once when you're in the
main up-down slider so just press space on it if you want to record and
again to stop recording; or simply go to the recording menu and begin or
 stop recording from there.
 3. There seems to be no other formats than MP3 or OGG if the stream is
in
 OGG format.
 4. You can set another directory for recordings by going to preferences
under the settings menu and then to the recording card; then tab twice
and
you will find a button which JAWS won't specify but just press space on
it
and you'll get to the dialog box to find a new directory.
 5. The up-down slider info is the volume; 100% is the highest so just
move
the up and down arrows to get a lower volume if you wish; BTW, if you
lower
the volume it doesn't have any influence on JAWS.
 6. The presets are updated automatically and you'd better not add to
them or
then your additions would be deleted by the new automatic update anyway,
but
you can add new stations by yourself to favorites instead.

 Hope this helps.
 Martina

I would just like to be able to hear it at all at any volume level. My issue
remains, if I have no trouble with other audio offerings, yet cannot hear
gameday audio, and if other people, both blind and sighted are encountering
the same issue, how can it be assumed that the problem is exclusively on the
user's end. It is difficult, not to mention frustrating for me to track the
problem when everything else that I stream works flawlessly.

Gameday Audio has worked as it should from the opening day of spring

Hence, any problems are on the user end rather than the supplier.
I have sampled numerous feeds over the first 4 days of the regular season

I had the same experience on the BK audio site as well. I'll hold on to
this email through the weekend and will forward privately so I don't clog
things up on the list. IOW: I will get info for you and send it along.
I had my eye on a unit via EBay had I sold my system. I kind of glad I
didn't though, unless I could get into the BK unit. I have an older BK
4090 preamp, but the remote went bad, so I sold my power amp about two
 years
ago and jumped into the Flagship Onkyo receiver. After further research, I
realized how much of a step down the JVC would've been, so I moved on from
it. Although it has some nice features, it's not TXH Ultra II certified.

  Gary,
Do you have your computer incorporated into your Home Theater system?
  That's
what I ultimately want to do, but when I did so a few months ago, my
computer screen didn't read well on a HD TV. The wife said all
  characters
looked weird, but I only have composite and S video out on my video card
  and
no adaptor to accommodate the 16:9 TV screen.
Don't quote me on this, but I heard the BK Audio Components AVR
  507receiver
will allow software programs, such as JAWS to be loaded onto it's system
allowing blind folk to use it more easily. I'm currently running an
  Onkyo
989 version 2 THX Ultra 2 receiver and considering a few other options
 now
as I'm trying to sell the Onkyo.
JVC has wireless PC hook up capability as well as Sirius satellite radio
built right into the 702B model. So, I'm considering the BK as
  mentioned
above or the JVC once I sell my Onkyo, or I might just wait to see if
  Onkyo
has an upgrade soon with newer HD features.
I also like to use a few surround features when playing music.

  Best Regards,
  Cornell

Well I like my home theater system. I play my music in surround sound,

No, I understood what you were stating, but I'm such a junky for audio

   keeping
things simple without too many bells and whistles. I'm also an audio

but I began to incorporate home theater A/V into my system back in 91
  with
an Onkyo 70 Pro integra receiver with discreet amplification.
For the most part, I fully agree with you about home theater systems
 not
that great for audio files. However, when you get into higher end
  systems,
at least with a few out there, they tend to accommodate audio
   listening
quite well along with the home theater features. But, that typically

First of all, 99% of Gameday customers likely have no problem. If the
service works for that large of a group, clearly, the service is working
as intended.
It's also clear that you have a problem for whatever reason.
If you have sighted assistance available, I would suggest that you have
that person try accessing a game.
Turn off your screen reader so that it doesn't interfere with that
person's use of the pc.
Make certain that a mouse is plugged in.
If I had to guess, perhaps the Gameday's player audio is either on mute or
down to no volume.

When having done this kind of debugging for myself, my sighted wife can
often spot problems within 30 seconds that I couldn't detect in 30 hours.

You are either doing something wrong; the problem is with the gameday
player or something is blocking the stream.

And I would also guess that the only way to resolve this is by someone
having access to the machine that doesn't work.

message that there was a problem decoding. It doesn't do this with all my
files, but these particular files are podcasts related to I-Tunes. Is
 there
a setting I should change in either the program or the files? Thanks.

Gameday is using the same page as last season, and nothing appears to be
different.
As to wwhy a few individuals are hearing no audio but the vast majority
are, I don't have the foggiest notion -- and I am guessing that GameDay
Audio doesn't either.
Probably, what somebody needs to put together is a step-by-step users
guide with troubleshooting tips which might help resolve these issues for
blind users.

I do feel for you, but I also believe that GameDay Audio itself isn't the
culprit here.

Re: Game Day Audio in Windows Media Player - not in browser ...

2007-04-06 Thread Beth Hatch
Hello everyone,

I'm catching this thread in the middle so I haven't read all of the
messages concerning Game Day Audio not playing for some users. I had a
similar problem last season, audio not playing, and here is what I did
to resolve the issue. I removed Windows Media player, rebooted my
computer, and performed a completely new installation of Media player
10. I think something broke dealing with Active X or Windows Media
player, I couldn't access game day audio with Firefox or Internet
explorer, this happened after it had worked for several months with no
audio problems and then suddenly stopped working. After reinstalling
Media Player, I rebooted my machine and then went to
www.mlb.com/mediacenter. Since I am using JAWS, I hit the letter t to
read the various tables on thethe media center web page, the one I
wanted was shown with the day's games. I did, however, experience
annoyance in attempting to view archived games from the menu on the web
site, according to the mlb web site support frequently asked questions,
this menu to select the archive was in java and I couldn't find a way to
access it. Maybe they have fixed this problem for this season, but I
haven't tried to access it. I would suggest reinstalling Media player,
rebooting, and installing it again and rebooting, perhaps that will fix
the problems people are having. Please note that I had no other
problems with any other audio I wanted to listen to when this problem
occurred, only with the Game Day Audio. I hope this helps those who are
annoyed and frustrated.smile

Thanks for listening,

Beth

problem burning DVD's

2007-04-06 Thread Allison Mervis
Hi all!
I usually use DVD Shrink 3.2 in conjunction with Nero 7 and the latest version
of Any dDVD to burn DVD's. However, the last two times I've tried to rip a dvd
with DVD shrink, I get the following error message.
DVD Shrink 3.2
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.graphic 683 Failed to read
file D:\
Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
OK
What could be wrong? Is there any other software out there that works? I've
already tried DVD decryptor, and I don't like it much. It never rips the DVD to
a size which will fit onto a blank. Thanks!

  Hi.

I have JFW running with software speech and a virus scanner. I did have the
XM PCR running too, so that could have been part of the problem. I also
  have a virus scanner running.

I guess that means Elloquence.
I used software speech similar to that with a 1 gigahertz machine with no
problems. But, I began using a hardware synth for assurance that I was using
as little computer resources as possible. Also, I didn't run anything except
SF.
