Re: not seeing cd rom in my computer

2007-10-17 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Kenneth,
Is your computer a desk top or a lab top?
If it is a desk top, then this may be what the problem is.
In the back of those internal cd/DVD drives, there is a jumper.
There are also a set of pens that are in a series of 6.
They are sat up like a 2-way 6-way connected switch.
They are labeled, master slave and cable.
By default, that jumper is on the cable.
All depending on how your computer is configured, you will have to change
that jumper from cable to either master or slave.
After you do that, It should work for you.
I hope this info helps, good luck!
  Signed John Price.

I'm using Nero Burning Rom to burn some CD's which have tracks which
 run
together--most notably, Pink Floyd and Chicago.

No matter what I do I cannot get the transitions between tracks to go
smoothly. I've even tried a couple different ideas in GoldWave.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to correct this problem.

 Thanks.

They may not know what you mean by accessible, just like I don't. If
you mean can you turn them on and change stations, I don't know of an
XM receiver you can't do that to. If you mean one that will speak
everthing then you won't find one in either company. If you mean one
that will partially speak then XM has them. They are usually some of
the replay models. I can't remember what they are, but I have seen
one. I'm still using my old PCR.

  Larry,
I don't think that you are going to find a satellite receiver with speech
output. The particular unit that I have is pretty straight forward, and the
buttons are raised and are in a straight row at the bottom of the unit. They
appear as little dots that are easy to feel. There are long bar type buttons
on the front panel off to the left that perform other functions, and on the
boombox itself there is a cluster of raised buttons; volume up, volume down,
off, and mute. When you change channels you hear a little beep that tells
you that you are indeed changing channels. The Source has this particular
unit on sale for I believe to be $129. This of course, does not include the
boombox that the unit clips into. This is a good unit for people with low
vision, as the faunt on the display window can be changed. Ideally it would
be nice to have a unit that would tell you verbally what song is playing. I
am wondering if a speech device could be hooked up to the unit to read out
the information on the display window. I think that it is dooable. This
would be similar to the device that reads out the frequencies on ham radio
  equipment.

Re: problem with replay streams

2007-10-17 Thread Mike Pietruk

A few points here:

WCKG, as a CBS owned and operated station, is but one of many such
stations that is giving fits, upon occasion, not only to Replay AV users
but streaming listeners in general.
Secondly, I probably wouldn't be spending much time attempting to solve
this one as media reports indicate that WCKG is on life support, so to
speak, and will most likely go through some format change by year's end
(looking at the Arbitron ratings will tell you why) as the station never
recovered from the loss of Howard Stern, the rover disaster, and Kevin
Matthews not being renewed.

I'll give WCKG a look later today; and, if I can solve the problem, I'll
report back.

Re: problem with replay streams

Here is what I've discovered:

Here are my findings:

This problem isn't unique to 8.30 as Replay AV 8.21 shows the same behavior.

The url listed in the Replay MediaGuide is

http://www.replay-video.com/user/redirect_station.php?id=5459&format=WMP

which records, but doesn't play as reported by the questioner.

following stream plays, but
won't record (obtained from StreamingRadioGuide
(http://streamingradioguide.com):

http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index.php?CALLSIGN=WCKGFM

practical solution:

create 2 entries in Replay AV one for recording purposes, and one for listening.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Larry N
Hi Bob and thanks for the response. The truth is, I know next to nothing
about sattelite receivers. I did phone XM, and was told they had no
receivers with raised buttons. Probably not true, but I didn't appreciate
the brush off.

Now then, after reading your post, I have 2 questions. First, what is the
name or number of the sirius model that you're using? Second, when you say
that I would need to purchase the boombox that this unit would clip in to,
are you talking about a standard stereo system or something else related to
sattelite technonogy. Please forgive these very basic questions, but my only
sattelite listening experience is through XM on Winamp.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Larry N
Hi Tim. I agree. Excessible is a term that I use primarily within the
confines of this group. After all, how is a sighted person supposed to know
what that means to me. And even within this group it's almost a cliche. That
being said, excessible to me means raised buttons for changing channels and
all. Speech would be nice, but I didn't think it existed. When I asked XM
Canada customer care whether or not they had raised buttons on their
receivers, the person who responded said that they had no such receivers and
thanked me for my interest.. I had hoped and still hope to find out which
service offered the most functionality for me as a blind guy and then take
it from there, learning which service offered more of what I want to hear.

Which Skype Recorder?

2007-10-17 Thread Steve Matzura
I have to admit, I'm a bit of an ostrich when it comes to certain
things--if I don't need 'em, I tend to ignore 'em--until one day, the
sun penetrates, my head pops up out of the technological quagmire in
which it's been buried of late, and I discover there's actually some
new tool out there that will do what I need done at the moment, and
it's been around for aeons, and I just never took notice of it!

Such is the case with Skype Recorder. However, there appear to be more
than one such tool with the same name from different
vendors/purveyors/authors. Just Google "skype recorder" and see what
you get--a veritable cornucopia of responses, some free, some not,
some even going under some kind of daily software giveaway program,
probably long expired!

So, my question comes down to this: Which one(s) have you used and
with what degree of success and pleasure? Or, which one(s) have you
used and to what degree of dislike or out-and-out dismay, and, of
course, why to all of the above?

Thanks for helping clear the fog on this one.

everthing then you won't find one in either company. If you mean one
that will partially speak then XM has them. They are usually some of
the replay models. I can't remember what they are, but I have seen
one. I'm still using my old PCR.

and where should I put it - goldwave directory, windows\system32 or
somewhere else?
Thanks very much in advance!

Subject: Which Skype Recorder?

You have to go to Adobe's support and download their flash uninstall
utility. then, reinstall flash player. This happens with the latest build
of the flash player Vista and some XP machines.

I'm the user whose quote is offered below. The difficult thing for totally
blind users is that you may not know flash hasn't installed. for sighted
people, a movie comes up to confirm the success of the installation. The
installation will go all the way to the end and even ask you to restart your
browser without issuing an error message. I didn't realize the player
wasn't successfully installed until the next time I received a message on

Re: problem with replay streams

2007-10-17 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. What you can do, at least up until CKG changes formats is
this. One go to your replay A/V screen and then go to tools with alt
t and then go to the URL finder.
2. Now go to ckg's website and hit enter on the listen link. Let
the audio play for about 15 or 20 seconds or so, and thentab back
over to the other window for the URL finder. the address of the
stream should be in the list that shows up there. you can then
schedule it as a new show and schedule a new recording and stuff like that.

Re: problem with replay streams

But what I am wondering, is once you record the stream, can you listen
later -- and is there a way to tell that the second stream you
mentioned is not recording?

Also, does tech support tell you anything useful about this?

I am thinking of buying the replay a/v as I am using Vista and there
seems to be no way out since total recorder will no longer work with
Windows Media player.

I'm using 331, is there a version issue?

Recordings are saved for you to listen at your leisure so, of course, you
can listen to them.
As you highlight an entry, RAV tells you when it was recorded last and
when it is scheduled to record next.
Entries, by default, are not playing unless you hit an

ctrl+t

when a item is highlighted.

There is an action of some nature against the program. Getting connected is

Replay AV alternative

A few weeks ago, someone was discussing an alternative to Replay AV for
recording streams. What was the name of the program or web site? I
think it was something like Radio Time.

Thanks.

Re: Replay AV alternative

2007-10-17 Thread Mike Pietruk
The program is called RedButton and is available through
www.radiotime.com.
A 14-day free trial is offered.
While I use both RedButton and Replay AV daily, the average blind user is
likely to view RedButton as somewhat more difficult to use.
The RadioTime online database of stations and programs is truly
outstanding and is updated on an ongoing basis.
RedButton costs aprox $30; but there is no charge for use of the online
station/show database.

Larry,
The sirius unit that I have is called Staarmate3. It comes complete with
both car and home kits. The unit can be used in both the car and in the
home. It also comes with two antennas, a small car antenna with a magnetic
back, and a much larger antenna that can be fastened to a windowsill with a
southern exposure. The catalogue number is: 1219809813 from the Source in
Canada. They have two other models that are slightly newer with the same
features of the unit that was previously mentioned. By the looks of the
photograph it appears that these models also have raised buttons as well.
The model numbers ar as follows: 1219812 and 1219807. All units come with a
built-in FM transmitter so that you can transmit your favourite station to
an FM radio in another room. Hope this helps.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Larry N
Bob, is a window with a southern exposure necessary for this antenna to
function properly?? We have windows facing east or west. Nothing facing
south.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Tim Grady
You would really be doing yourself a discsrvice to yourself if you
don't work with a reseller of the radios. In the first place, most
of the receivers for both Sirius and XM have buttons you can feel and
they beep for a lot of things. I haven't heard people do much
talking about this but most of the receivers for XM have the same
basic features that work the same way from receiver to receiver. The
same is true for Sirius. You absolutely do not need a boom box for
any receiver. On my Sirius receiver I use the home docking unit and
hook it up to my Bose. Some of the newer units don't even require a
home or car docking kit. What's really important is what service
works best in your area and you should also get a hands on look.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Bob Seed
Larry,
The antenna comes with a 21 foot long wire, so it is possible to mount the
antenna on a rooftop if necessary. If you have an internal wall facing south
that might work, however if there is a overhang that could also pose a
problem. The antenna has to be facing south, otherwise you will have dropout
of the signal coming from the cluster of transmitting satellites. The
antenna is mounted on a hinged type base that can be adjusted to maximize
the strength of the incoming signal in much the same way that one adjusts a
TV or FM radio antenna. I find that a 45degree angle of the antenna seems to
worke best for me. . .

 Larry,
I don't think that you are going to find a satellite receiver with
 speech
output. The particular unit that I have is pretty straight forward, and
 the
buttons are raised and are in a straight row at the bottom of the unit.
 They
appear as little dots that are easy to feel. There are long bar type
 buttons
on the front panel off to the left that perform other functions, and on
 the
boombox itself there is a cluster of raised buttons; volume up, volume
 down,
off, and mute. When you change channels you hear a little beep that
 tells
you that you are indeed changing channels. The Source has this
 particular
unit on sale for I believe to be $129. This of course, does not include
 the
boombox that the unit clips into. This is a good unit for people with
 low
vision, as the faunt on the display window can be changed. Ideally it
 would
be nice to have a unit that would tell you verbally what song is
 playing.
 I
am wondering if a speech device could be hooked up to the unit to read
 out
the information on the display window. I think that it is dooable. This
would be similar to the device that reads out the frequencies on ham
 radio
 equipment.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Bob Seed
It is not necessary to have a boombox, although it comes in handy when you
want to take your radio out on the deck or paddio. Keep in mind that the
signal from the built in FM transmitter doesn't travel very far. It is set
upin such a way that you can pick up Sirius satelite radio on your car radio
thus eliminating the use of wire. The fM transmitter that Jonathan has would
compliment these radios very well getting the FM signal out loud and clear.

Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?

2007-10-17 Thread Norma A. Boge-Conyers
I really think a lot of the antenna placement depends on
location. I'm in central Iowa, and I have one antenna which sits
atop our kitchen cupboard, pointing straight up. The other is on our
deck, southwest side of the house, again pointing straight up. Each
person needs to experiment and see what is best for them. Norma

Re: a winamp question

2007-10-17 Thread Sarah
Hello. use the direct sound out and then you can adjust onthe fly. I use it in
my broadcasting and I'musing it nw as I'm typing
this message. the music is way below jaws just the way I like it..

Subject: a winamp question

Hi listers. I have been seeing this thread about winamp versus WMP for a
while, and the only problem I can see with winamp, especially is that if I
use the direct sound output the volume is well below the volume of jaws.
This sometimes causes problems. If I bring the EQ up to try to compensate
for it, it sometimes saturates the player with weird results. If anyone
knows a way around this, I would be interested in hearing it. Thanks

Ted Phillips
