2008-10-14 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Oh, I agree. But if you are a female, you can pay $500 for a purse or you
can buy one that doesn't have a designer name for 20.
You can pay 300 for a pair of jeans or you can pay 40.
You can buy a pair of Jimmy Chu shoes or you can buy a pair at sears.
I don't even know the U S price for these scripts, but Australian is $70.
Considering the weakness of the American dollar, I would expect these
scripts might be $80 or even $100.
But if you think it's worth paying $80 to access your $150 or $200 ipod, I'd
go for it.

Paul, it's all about value, and what's of value to you may or may not
be of similar value to me or others. Considering what the scripts do,
and what you can do without them, which is basically nothing unless
you have the proper version of JAWS or Window-Eyes, therein lies the

I too am a fan of freeware and open source software, but remember iTunes
has only just now become accessible "out of the box". You may also need
the latest versions of the screen readers as well, like the second
release of the JAWS 10 Beta, although I'm not sure about this particular
point. I'm more than willing to pay for an accessible solution when
either there isn't a free accessible solution at all or the free
solution is just a lot tougher to use. I'll also support the development
of accessible software by paying for software that's been made
accessible, although there is a limit! I'm not sure if J-Tunes is worth
the price, but it's my understanding that up until Apple released iTunes
8, you didn't have a lot of other options.

Just to come clean, I've never used J-Tunes, itunes or an iPod. For my
part, the Apple space is just too expensive and proprietary, although to
be honest, the iPod Nano 4th Generation does have me intrigued.

2008-10-14 Thread Paul Henrichsen
I am not a big jaws user, though I own version nine. But didn't Jim
Snowbarger and others who write scripts use to charge somewhere around $25
or so for their scripts?
I could see paying 25 or $30. That makes sense to me, but paying as much as
I paid for Norton ghost 12, which is clearly a much more complex program
just seems wrong to me.
Still, if he can get $70 for his scripts, more power to him.
I have always been impressed with the guy. I just wish he'd rethink his
price structure.
Regarding itunes being free, I suppose that one could assume that that was
figured into the price of the Ipod, somehow, since you need itunes to even
use the thing.
But a 4gb ipod is only $100. That should make itunes pretty cheap if you
figure it as part of the package.
Still, it is a much more complicated program than is the JTunes script or
the 40 dollar antivirus program I use.

I have a fundamental problem with paying more for a script for a
program than the program itself, and in this case, the program itself
is free! I can understand, though, why the scripts are as pricy as
they are. It's not just one single script with a handful of
quick-and-dirty functions--not by a long shot--but paying more for the
script than most low-end MP3 players, well, I'd have to think about
that long and hard, and I hope T&T Consultancy might do the same.

Re: Free Audio And Video Converter And Editor?

2008-10-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The free audio converter I use is Switch from
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html. It comes with a trial period
after which some of the features are disabled. The sound conversions I
do, such as WMV to MP3 for example, still work in the free version even
after the trial period. I'm not sure what conversion you're looking for,
but you could check out the web site and the help pages to find out what
file conversions are supported.

The only free sound editor I know is Audacity from
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/. I don't use it myself, so I
can't say any more about it, other than it's come up on blind related
links, so I'm assuming it's at least somewhat accessible.

Re: Scripts for Skype

2008-10-14 Thread Steve Pattison
Hi Steve,

Well that's a hard question to answer because you forgot to say what
screen reader you want these scripts to be used with (smile).
Window-Eyes scripts for Skype can be found at www.gwmicro.com/sc. JAWS
scripts for Skype can be found at http://users.visi.com/~dgl/skype. Now
both of the popular screen readers support scripts it is probably a good
idea to specify the screen reader when people ask about scripts. I hope
this helps.

Yeah. 20-30, but no way I am paying 70-80 for just a script no matter how
good it is.
Somehow, that reminds me when people who created accessible software used to
charge outrageous prices because they knew they could screw some agency who
would pay it. I really think this price structure should be rethought.

2008-10-14 Thread mark bishop
I have downloaded spywear doctor and found it easy to use. It found quite a
lot of threats on my computer. I just needed to know if to clean my computer
I had to purchase it? It keeps telling me to register it, is it possi le to
use without registering? the price does seem a little high for just 1 year
or is it?

thanks

Hi,

I do not know anything about burning CDs, but need to learn. What is the
easiest software that a totally blind person can navigate independently
where I can burn music from my own CDs, from the web, etc.? Thank you.

RE: SV: J-Tunes 4.0 is released!

2008-10-14 Thread Paul Henrichsen
No, The market won't decide it. Some people are just desperate enough and
will pay for anything. It happens the same way in the sighted world. People
are scammed all the time paying huge amounts and then getting nothing or
very little in return.
You're right. Nobody is going to hold a gun to my head and make me pay $70
for a script, but I also have a right to state that it's highway robbery
plain and simple, like selling hammers to the pentagon.
If he can get the money for an over-priced item, more power to him.
But $70 for a script is too high. Ask your sighted friends whether they
would pay $70 for a script.
When they stop laughing in your face, perhaps you'll come to your senses and
agree.
Nobody's whining about anything here. They're just calling a spade a spade.
Why not charge $100 for it? Someone will probably be desperate enough to pay
for it.
Doesn't make it right.

Have you tried the scripts? No one is going to hold a gun to your head to
pay for them if you don't want. Notice the version is 4.0 so it looks like
Brian has convinced enough people that the work he has done is worth it.
Why do you people insist on whining about something like this? If it is
just a simple script then write them yourself and give them away if you
want. If the price is too high then the market will decide it.

The J-tunes scripts take a program which is useable with JAWS and make it an
efficient well running pleasure to use. If you don't want to pay for it
then don't but don't make stupid and unsubstantiated comments about Brian
when you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

It's easy to download Main Menu and other ACB Radio shows from

You can identify what MP3 files to download for a particular show from
the M3U file.

How To Restore Default Windows XP Sounds?

2008-10-14 Thread Sunday Ugerdodge
Since I installed Yahoo Messenger, I got a problem with my PC's default sounds.

The audio's natural volume decreased against the 100% volume control settings.

My Windows XP default sounds are not functioning even the sounds settings are
still set to previous settings before I experienced audio problem.

Now, can you please help me how to restore my Windows XP Pro default settings?

Thanks.

Re: J-Tunes 4.0 is released!

2008-10-14 Thread Steve Matzura
I have a fundamental problem with paying more for a script for a
program than the program itself, and in this case, the program itself
is free! I can understand, though, why the scripts are as pricy as
they are. It's not just one single script with a handful of
quick-and-dirty functions--not by a long shot--but paying more for the
script than most low-end MP3 players, well, I'd have to think about
that long and hard, and I hope T&T Consultancy might do the same.

Hi Stephen. You are probably using the Nullsoft Direct Sound output
plug-in. You find the setting in the "fading" tab of the plug-in
configuration window. You may need to use the screen reader cursor to
find it.Tab till you hear a list that starts with "On start". Then
down arrow to "on seek". Then tab again to get to the Fade on seek
settings and uncheck it.

Alternatively; you could switch to the Nullsoft wave out plug-in which
doesn't have the fade on seek setting.

Subject: hearing fast forward in winamp

I know that this should rightly go to winamp for the blind group, but
since I'm not a member, I wonder if someone on this list could direct me
to the answer.

I haven't updated winamp for some time, but I've had to reinstall with
the latest full version - 5144. However, I like to hear my audio files
fast forwarding when I press and hold the right cursor button. Winamp now
seems to have a mechanism that uses what I believe is called soft start
and stop between presses of the right cursor button so that now there is
no background noise when fast forwarding. I tend to rely on this facility
to monitor the fast forward to for example the next music segment in a
recorded radio broadcast, thus skipping past the DJ's comments, weather
forecasts, etc.

So my question is: how can I reinstate the skipping noise when I fast
forward?

Any pointers would be helpful.
