Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-24 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Stephen! Maybe we could keep the keys the same size if we did some
things: Maybe we wouldn't need the keypad. I don't know about the
six-pack, and maybe get rid of the function keys. Of course, we would need
the arrow keys, so other keys would have to substitute for the keys that
would no longer be needed. I heard someone say that netbook computers don't
have the horsepower as desktop models. I guess that's why I posed the
question to see what others think. I don't think these computers have a CD
rom drive, so one would wonder what would someone do if they had a program
on a CD or DVD?

Subject: The New Netbooks

Hi All! I'm wondering if anyone has yet tried using the new netbook
computers. I hear that they're quite handy to take from room to room,
but
again, the keys seem to be a bit smaller, and take a bit of getting used
to.

Has anyone ever tried using one of these animals?

If there was a need for a CD-ROM, connect one via USB. Make sure you find
one that is capable of being a boot device.

RE: The New Netbooks

2009-02-24 Thread Tom
Please folks, this is not the place to discuss and give
general reviews of hardware or software when not related to
audio. If you want to discuss using audio related hardware
or software on a netbook that's fine, but please do not make
posts dealing with memory, processor speed keyboard etc.
There are other e-mail lists for those subjects and issues.

Thank you.

Hi Steve,

I have been using a NC10 from Samsung for about a week. Our Samsung has
given us a 30 day evaluation unit to use. Actually, it has a very nice
keyboard, and it is just a slight bit bigger than the MSI Wind keyboard.
I know several people who have baught or are going to be buying the
Samsung, and two things that those people usually emntion is the nice
keyboard and over 7 hours of use on a charge of the battery.

I really like my MSI Wind, and it has some great features, including a
turbo mode that takes the speed to 2.0 GHZ. But, the best I have been
able to get with the MSI on battery life is a little over 5 hours. That
isn't bad, but 7 hours is fantastic.

This message was composed on a MSI Wind netbook.

Yes, but from those who have tried this unit, the concensus is just those
who are probably not using any screen reading or magnification technology
so

to me its not valid points.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96% keyboard
or

it would be the best seller.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-24 Thread Gary Wood
I was wondering if I should post about netbooks, but I thought that since
many seem to be using them, and like the portability, I thought that maybe
PC audio may be exactly the things people might be using them for. I'm
sorry, Tom, if this may be off topic, but that may have been my only reason
for posting about this. If people stream to their stereos, that may be a
plus!

I have an asus eee pc and like it more than the nc10. From what I've seen
of the nc10, that's just boasting. My 900 ha has maybe a 90 percent full
keyboard, probably less.

The soundcard on this thing rocks - for most things, anyway. It converts
files in gold wave with no lag at all. Its better than most laptops in
that it has xp. (keep in mind I'm keeping this as audio related as I can,
sorry if I stray off topic just a tad). I average 4.5 hours on battery
with a 4 cell battery. None of the other netbooks can do that - because
asus's super hybrid engine.

Again, love it. Will never buy another brand of netbook again - or laptop,
for that matter.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-24 Thread Gary Schindler
all the issues you bring up can be addressed quite nicely. you can buy plug
and play sound cards for audio work. you can get USB cd burners that run off
the buss and you can buy USB keyboards if you like. instead of a 72 RPM hard
drive they usually have a 54 rpm speed. now it is up to me to choose which
one I want. the Acer's are the cheapest I think.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-24 Thread Rick Alfaro
Just to add to this a bit, the Asus EEE pcs also use the RealTek sound.
My particular model the 904ha can also go up to 7 hrs plus with screen
brightness turned all the way down. It has a 6 cell battery and the
Asus Hy bread engine also offers a super turbo mode that will over-clock
the Atom. What I particularly like about this model are the keyboard
and sound. The keyboard is almost as nice as the HP keyboard, and the
speakers, although on the bottom part of the front edge, sound very good
considering the size and they don't get totally covered up when you
place the device on your lap.

David Tanner wrote:
Let me make a few comments here. I have used the MSI, HP MiniNote, the
Samsung NC10, and the Dell Mini 9. First let me say that I was totally
disappointed by the Dell Mini 9. The keyboard is too small, keys are
crammed together, and a number of important keys are missing or have
been moved. The keyboard has not functionkey roe, and only has the
ability to get functionkeys F1 thru F10. Finally, the Dell has the
same processor as the other units, but ran much slower and boots much
slower.

The Samsung has a very nice keyboard, and is quite easy to type on at a
rather fast pace. The speaker sounds good considering the size of the
unit, and works well even with software such as Kurzweil1000 and
Openbook with a Canon Lide 200 flatbed scanner. About the only
complaint I could find was that the button to turn the unit on and off
was on the side of the unit where a person could easily accidently press
the button and turn the unit on or off without intending to do so. The
most fantastic thing about the Samsung is that with the great battery
management software in the unit it gets around 7 hours of use on a
charge. That is a fantastic time for any laptop, and I have heard of no
other netbook that can even come close to running as long on a charge.

The HP MiniNote I used was very nice, and had fantastic sound for its'
size. The HP MiniNotes have very nice keyboards and are easy to type
on. But, battery life per charge seemed to stay just over 4 hours per
charge.

I baught a MSI Wind in December and absolutely love it. I think the
only minus is that the speakers are under the unit and do not sound as
good as some of the other units because of their placement under the
unit. The keyboard is very good, easy to type on, and has nice size
keys. I am getting just over 5 hours of use on a charge of the battery
(6 cell). The MSI has a new firmware bios that allows the unit to be
run in turbo mode that takes the speed of the processor to 2.0 GHZ
instead of the 1.6 standard. But, because of the use of stepping you
should not have to worry about overheating the processor because the
processor will only run at the faster speed when processing demands call
for the necessity of more speed for heavy processing. This difference
makes the MSI able to perform more quickly and crispy on a lot of
applications than the other units here that do not have any turbo mode.

I have used Jaws 10, Window-Eyes 7, the latest NVDA, and the latest
System Access on these units and had no problems using any of these
packages on any of the units with the exception of keyboard issues on
the Dell Mini 9.

This message was composed on a MSI Wind netbook.

Yes, but from those who have tried this unit, the concensus is just those
who are probably not using any screen reading or magnification
technology so

to me its not valid points.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96%
keyboard or

it would be the best seller.

2009-02-24 Thread Rick Alfaro
There is a podcast that someone did on the Asus 904ha. You can find it
at www.blindcooltech.com. Just do a search for Asus on the main page
and you should find it. Although the podcast wasn't put together all
that well, you can see the netbook in action, using GoldWave for
recording and processing audio, along with a bunch of other stuff that
will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of performance from
a netbook or at least this particular model.

Maybe the Samsung with it's turbo mode could even handle some soft
synthesizer plugins.

I just tried the trial of the TV suite version of the program and it appears
surprisingly accessible. The keyboard shortcuts let me do some rough cuts
and navigate in the file. It's quite expensive at $75 but I think I'll go
for it. Thanks for the tip.

You could try Video Redo suite from http://www.videoredo.com

It's not the most intuitive program , but by using the contex key
instead of the programs shorts cuts, I regularly edit ads out of tv
programs and record them to dvd.

I've been recording a lot of audio described TV programmes as audio
files.
As I'm totally blind that's mostly what I'm interested in. I use Total
Recorder to edit out the adverts.

However, there's a couple of programmes that my sister, who is sighted,
is interested in. I think I can use Nero to burn my mpeg files to video
DVD. I got excited when I saw that there's a plugin for Total Recorder
that would let me edit video in exactly the same way it does audio. I
figure the rough edits I want to do can be done just by listening. But
it turns out the plugin only edits AVI and WMV files. Does anyone know
how to get round this or of a video editing programme that is accessible
enough for this purpose?

Vista Sound TuTutorial

2009-02-24 Thread Morey Worthington

Hello all.
A while back there was a link to a tutorial about using Windows Vista and
its recording properties and the troubles within.

It was done using Jaws and Vista Home Premium.
Any thoughts on where I may find it? I tried the Blind Geek Zone but not
there, but was pretty sure it was there, or some site like that.

Thanks,

It really does work well. Try the Ad Dective feature for finding and
deleting ads more or less automatically.

Olympus ds-50

2009-02-24 Thread Martin, Tim A., NMDOT
I know this has been covered in the past, but can someone tell me how
the little speaker on the ds-50 recorder sounds. I don't need perfect
sound, just need to hear what I've recorded.

I need something for simple voice recordings with a built-in speaker so
I don't have to use head-phones.

Someone that uses this recorder please!

Thanks much,
Tim

2009-02-24 Thread Robert Logue
Thanks Rick. I listened to that podcast. Found it quite helpful. Think
the Asus responds much better than my desktop.. Didn't notice any hiccups
and long pauses. Aaron sure was loading up the system with processes.
Playing audio games wile recording and processing noise in Goldwave is
impressive to me.

There is a podcast that someone did on the Asus 904ha. You can find it at
www.blindcooltech.com. Just do a search for Asus on the main page and you
should find it. Although the podcast wasn't put together all that well,
you can see the netbook in action, using GoldWave for recording and
processing audio, along with a bunch of other stuff that will give you a
good idea of what to expect in terms of performance from a netbook or at
least this particular model.

Hi Tim,

I've been using the DS-50 for over a year. The speaker is fine, but
you need to place the recorder very close to the person who is
speaking into it.

I use it primarily for having people give me their contact info, and
then put the info on my Braille Lite.

Once in awhile, I use it to get main points from a lecture, but the
quality isn't as great.

Good luck, and feel free to contact me off-list.

RE: Using a Bluetooth earpiece as a general PC headset

2009-02-24 Thread Lynn Schneider
David, I'm behind on my messages, so sorry if this has already been covered.
Yes, there are a couple ways you could do this. I use the Plantronics
Pulsar 590A, which is an over-the-head stereo headset costing about 100
bucks that comes with a universal adapter that hooks into any non-Blue Tooth
capable device that has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. I might do a podcast on
this headset because I really like it, and they may even have models that
are not over the head. The Pulsar 590A also comes with a USB cable and an
in-flight cable. The cool thing about the universal adapter is that, aside
from using the headset with your cell phone, you can essentially use it with
any device that is not Blue Tooth capable but that has a 3.5 mm jack.

Is your computer Blue Tooth capable? If not, I think they have something
called a USB Bluetooth adapter or Blue Tooth dongle that you can hook to
your PC to give it Blue Tooth capability. I don't know much about these,
but I do know a lot about the Pulsar and I really like it.

One thing I noted on the 4 netbooks that I have worked with is that most of
them do not have a MP3 encoder. So, if you plan to use Goldwave or another
editor that does not include a MP3 encoder you will need to download and
install one. I installed the latest Lame and all is well since doing that.

recording and some audio editing.

Maybe the Samsung with it's turbo mode could even handle some soft
synthesizer plugins.

Re: Olympus ds-50

2009-02-24 Thread tickpub
Ok, I use the Olympus 40, the only difference is in the capacity. But,
the speaker works fine for me and I am sure that there might be an
improvement on the 50.
My ears ain't all that good now days but the sound quality is good. I
listen to music and to many articles, you can turn it up pretty loud. I
lay it down about two foot from me on a counter next to my work and just
let it play. It does well for this an sounds like it is something you
can work with very nicely.

I know this has been covered in the past, but can someone tell me
 how
the little speaker on the ds-50 recorder sounds. I don't need
 perfect
sound, just need to hear what I've recorded.

I need something for simple voice recordings with a built-in speaker
 so
 I don't have to use head-phones.

Someone that uses this recorder please!

 Thanks much,
 Tim
