Hi. We've been talking about stand alone multitrack recorders with speech
being developed. Until that happens, what is the best software for windows
to do multitrack recording with Jaws. Does multiquence do multitrack
recording? and is it accessible for us? I'm thinking it might be since
goldwave, a program made by the same developer is accessible. Thanks. Joe.

Hey, Christopher and list! Well, I'll be! Smile. I'd just heard so often
that those commerical cables wouldn't work that I just believed it! Note to
self: Read the BARD information. Well, this is nice to know since I have
zillions of these commercial cables, not that I plan to get a cartridge
really.

| The cable is actually a standard USB extension cable. A commercial cable
| will work. The problem is that the cartridge has to plug into the female
end
| of this cable, and the housing around the USB blog keeps it from
physically
| plugging into most commercial cables. Although it's a standard cable, and
a
| commercial cable will work, I'd suggest just getting a cable from ILA, APH
| or Perkins. It'll be a bit more expensive, but you'll be sure it works.
|
| Here's what it says at the BART Talk web site's FAQ at
| http://www.bardtalk.com/faq.php:
|
| 9. How can I connect the DTB cartridge to my computer?
| Answer: Any standard USB cable will work, as long as it is identified as
an
| extension cable. this means the cable must have a full size male USB plug
on
| one end, and a full size USB or female receptacle on the other. Companies
| such as Independent Living Aids carry a short cable used for this purpose,
| but
| the cable is not a special cable and may be purchased at other locations.
| The standard NLS cartridge appears to be smooth or flush where the female
or
| receptacle end of the cable attaches to the cartridge. With a little
| practice,
| attaching the female end of the USB cable to the cartridge will become
| easier. When attaching a thumb drive to the NLS dtbm using a cable, a
| shorter cable
| is preferable since it will be less likely to snag on something and become
| the means by which the NLS dtbm is yanked from its perch.

2010-04-05 Thread Dane Trethowan
Just to clarify this a little, I've not played with Audacity much myself but it
was certainly accessible enough to get around, I remember someone writing a
tutorial to use Audacity with JAWS, I was able to adapt the concepts presented
in that tutorial without a problem to get Audacity to work successfully using
Window-Eyes on the Windows PC and Voiceover on the Mac.

Unfortunately, I Don't remember where I found the tutorial so someone on list
may know where to find it or indeed! whether the tutorial still exists. The
Tutorial talks about 1.35 which was - and still is as far as I know - in beta.

No, if you need a flash drive, you will have to buy one.
I found in my experience, that having a cartridge that was made just for

You can get them from:

But the only thing is, you'll have to wait until next month.
They have them on back order.
Also keep in mind, you will need a USB extension cord in order to plug

Hope this helps.

The Bookshelf Upgrade

You might want to download several books or magazines to a flash drive
and then listen to any of them in some random order. To do this, your
player must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to
"bookshelf" books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library
digital book player to the latest software:

Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site:
http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page two links.
I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work, return to the
page and download the second link.
After you click the link from the web site and download the file to your
computer, extract (unzip) this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive,
etc.) so that the directory "upgrade" appears in the "root" directory of
the drive. This procedure is exactly the same as you use to download a
book.

Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the
player.

The player will announce "Upgrading your player's software."
Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10
seconds), then remove the flash drive.
The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the
version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge will
not repeat the upgrade.

You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you downloaded
to undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to download books
and magazines.

To employ the bookshelf feature, turn the player on. Press and hold the
Play/Stop button until you hear the narrator announce the activation of
the bookshelf feature. Continue to hold down the Play/Stop button and
press either the FF or the RW arrow-shaped key to either side of the
Play/Stop button. As you push and release these keys, the player will
announce the next title on the flash drive. Once you get to the end of
the titles saved on the drive, you must utilize the other direction key
to toggle back through the titles. In other words, you cannot continue
to use only the FF or the RW key to toggle through the titles in a
circuit-type action. Release the Play/Stop button when you reach the item
to which you desire to listen.

Re: digital multi track recording

2010-04-05 Thread Danny Miles
Hi everyone. My name's Danny Miles, and I'm a UK citizen whose new to
the list. Apologies if I cover something mentioned somewhere else,
but I'm just catching up.

Yes, I'd love to see multi-track recording hardware with speech, and
would be pleased to give my support in any way I can (afraid I'm not
knowledgeable enough to make suggestions, but would be pleased to act
as a tester etc). As I've never had a Mac I use Goldwave, but have
never heard of Multiquence until I joined this list (more info on
where to obtain it and any tutorials would be gratefully received).
I'm also a traditionalist who likes to carry out recording without
worrying about technology, and a good piece of hardware would be great
for me in several ways. I'm a budding journalist, and even if I never
end up doing this in a professional capacity, I will be spending
plenty of time making programmes and documentaries for voluntary
radio. I also have a history as a drummer and local band manager -
booking gigs etc - but I've never been able to assist with the
production of EPs due to a lack of knowledge about accessible
multi-track recording hardware/software. I used to record the
occasional thing with a minidisc recorder (you'll be pleased to know
I've advanced to an Olympus digital recorder since those teenage days
of mine), but this obviously meant that I could only take a straight
recording so I wasn't able to do very much.

book player to the latest software: Obtain the latest software from the
NLS web site: http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page
two links. I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work,
return to the page and download the second link. After you click the link
from the web site and download the file to your computer, extract (unzip)
this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive, etc.) so that the directory
"upgrade" appears in the "root" directory of the drive. This procedure is
exactly the same as you use to download a book. Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the
player. The player will announce "Upgrading your player's software." Wait
until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10 seconds),
then remove the flash drive. The upgrade will only occur if the player's
version is older than the version of the software on the cartridge;
reinserting the cartridge will not repeat the upgrade.

In other words, you cannot continue to
use only the FF or the RW key to toggle through the titles in a
circuit-type action. Release the Play/Stop button when you reach the item
to which you desire to listen.

High Randy,
No, if you need a flash drive, you will have to buy one.
I found in my experience, that having a cartridge that was made just for
the NLS player, works best.

You can get them from:
http://www.aph.org
But the only thing is, you'll have to wait until next month.
They have them on back order.
Also keep in mind, you will need a USB extension cord in order to plug
those cartridges in to your computer to put anything on them.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Cables for NLS cartridges and the BARD Talk web site [was "RE: Where do you download updates to your digital talking book player?"]

2010-04-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the message
you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable needed to connect
a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a standard USB extension
cable. This will have a full sized male connector at one end and a full size
female connector at the other end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS
cartridge, many USB extension cables aren't going to work, and you may find
it best to buy a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to work
with the NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw this
message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on this list,
the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good information. It's also
well organized and well thought out. I think it will clarify a lot and won't
appear as contradictory as separate posts to a mailing list may seem to be.

2010-04-05 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Tom,
If it's a standard USB flash drive, it will plug right in to the USB port
that's located on the right side of the player.
I was the one that said that you'll have to wait a month to get the
cartridges from AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE.

I called them Friday morning to place a credit card order for 2 of them.
I was told by the rep, that they were on back order.
She tried to talk me in to placing the order anyway, but that didn't make
any since to me to charge that to my credit card then having to wait a month
before I have them in my hands.
If this other website that I've been hearing about has them in stock, I will
get them from there.

Only one question though, do they take credit card orders over the phone?
My best regards.
John.

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on the
right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one way,
so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

where can you get the flash drives?
Are they small drives?
I've never seen one of these before.

Places To Get USB FLASH DRIVES

2010-04-05 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Randy,
You can get them from any department store and or any electronics store.
You may wish to check Office Depot.
Another place you can look is, Office Max.
One more I could add to the list is, RadioShack.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable
needed to connect a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a
standard USB extension cable. This will have a full sized male
connector at one end and a full size female connector at the other
end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS cartridge, many USB
extension cables aren't going to work, and you may find it best to buy
a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to work with the
NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on
this list, the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good
information. It's also well organized and well thought out. I think it
will clarify a lot and won't appear as contradictory as separate posts

Hello Tom,
If you feel the right side of your player, you will find a headphone jack.
Right behind it, is the USB port. It does have a plastic cover over it.
If you remove that cover, the USB port will be exposed.
Right there, is where you will plug in your new thumb drive.
Hope this helps.

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on
the

right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive
should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one
way,

so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

I think it

Hi Tom.

Sounds like you got a USB drive like I have. Grab each end of it, and
gently pull. You should get one part that protects the USB port, and the
other part, which is the drive. Also, grab the ends so you have the flat
part between your fingers.

Hope this works for you. By the way, APH won't have the cartridges in stock
until the end of May, at least that's what I heard.

Don't work too hard.

Hello Tom,
If you feel the right side of your player, you will find a headphone jack.
Right behind it, is the USB port. It does have a plastic cover over it.
If you remove that cover, the USB port will be exposed.
Right there, is where you will plug in your new thumb drive.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

will clarify a lot and won't appear as contradictory as separate posts
to a mailing list may seem to be.
The URL for the BARD Talk web site is http://www.bardtalk.com/.

you want the standard cable normally used for digital cameras. It has a
standard USB on one end and the other is about half the size.

2010-04-05 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi Gang: Okay..this is what I have so far: there seems to be something on one
end of the drive that can come off..but do we need a screw driver or something?
Mom and I have both tried to get this off..no soap! It does appear that once
this comes off, I'm in business! If one of you cares to write me offlist as I
don't wish to tie the list up with this too long! My email is

the flash drive should plug directly into the computer USB port, or the port
on the side of the NLS player. you can keep the cable you have, you may use
it for something else down the road. I don't think I caught what cable you
do have.

RE: Flash Drive Update

2010-04-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yeh, it's a USB extension cable. You can further clarify that you need a
full male connector on one end and a full female connector on the other end.
Note that even if you get a USB extension cable, you may still not be able
to fit the NLS cartridge into the female end because of the limited
clearance on the cartridge.

Most flash drives should work just fine though, although you can also plug
them directly into the NLS player.
