GoldWave and stereo files
Hello all, I've had some comments off list regarding my podcast, saying they could only hear it out of one channel. Does anyone know what's going on here? I have a mono version of it, but is that the actual problem? I would have thought that if GoldWave creates a stereo file, the recording is expected to come out of both channels, wouldn't it? If not, why? All help would be greatly appreciated. -- Mr Technician E-mail and Facebook: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Skype: chrishallsworth7266 Twitter: http://twitter.com/christopherh40 To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Re: CD Recording and Maintenance
Hi there. Thanks for such a detailed response. I have previously recorded onto my laptop, but I'm currently borrowing someone else's and haven't got room to put Goldwave on there (will do this when I get a new machine of my own). However, the CD recorder does have an advantage in that it doesn't seem to pick up the buzz which came with copying tapes using the computer (I know this can be edited out, but it does take additional time and patience). Also, older tapes which aren't great quality (such as those which have only recorded through one speaker etc) still come out fine on a CD recorder, whereas the signal would come through very quietly or not at all on my laptop. The discs I'm using often only have fine scratches but, as you suggested, they seem to throw the player out completely. Actually playing them isn't a problem, but when recording you get a crackling all the way through certain sections of the disc, making it very distracting to listen to. I've got an old Sony minidisc recorder, but it doesn't have a USB connection facility (being about ten years old), so I don't use it anymore due to the issue with transferring files. When recording on the CD recorder, I rip the disc to the laptop and then unfinalize/delete it on the recorder before recording again. My discs seem to last for 3-4 weeks, but I've recently found that they also stop recording part of the way through a session before they actually get scratched and produce the annoying sound which I referred to earlier. This, presumably, is something to do with their unpredictability - I also used to have trouble when recording on both recordable and re-recordable discs with my old Plextalk PTR1 device (which I no longer have), but assumed that this was a problem with the Plextalk and not the discs. My minidisc recorder does have long play, so if I could find a way of getting it attached to my laptop through USB this would be an excellent option, as it would allow me to leave things recording for longer when I'm out and would remove the unpredictability issue. Does anyone have any ideas on this score please? Many thanks again, Danny On 5/19/10, Walter Ramage wrote: > Hi Danny. RE: CD Recording and Maintenance
Hi Danny. Firstly Is there any reason why you can't record straight onto your PC hard drive or external drive? That would be your best option if you can do that. assuming you can't then Re-writable CDs have a very limited lifespan. You are very limited in how many times you can erase and record any single disc. I know from experience that they are very unreliable and bearing in mind they are kinda expensive they are not very economical in the long run. I'm trying to recall something I read about them many years ago but I can't fully remember. All I can recall was the problem lays with the dye's ability to react to the laser and over time it's response becomes ineffective and the disc becomes a piece of junk. I do have a few sealed audio re-writables but only use them if I have no other choice but since they have been in their sealed packs for a few years, I haven't been forced to use them. I found the worst combination was to record something on my Hi-Fi CD recorder, then take it to my PC and rip the contents and then erase it in the PC. A couple of times of that and the disc died. I found the best way to prolong the life of the disc as much as possible was if I recorded the disc in the audio CD recorder it was wise to erase it in there and if I burned the disc in the PC then, erase it there also. My preferred means of doing the sort of recordings you speak of is to record onto mini disc. They can be written on and erased a million times without deterioration of the audio quality. If you can get hold of a MD recorder with long play facility then you can get up to 5 hours 20 minute recording time from a single disc. Of course, the quality is slightly lowered compared to the stereo setting, probably similar to a PC file at 128kbs, but for the spoken word it is perfectly fine. Some portable Mini disc recorders can be connected to your PC via USB and you can transfer files freely. Also, Mini Disc has a reasonable, if only basic editing feature. Sadly, they are becoming quite hard to find though. The other option is one of the Olympic digital recorders but I have no experience of these and will have to leave it to others to explain whether such a device would suit your purposes. Finally, as for examining the disc it's self? That is something you would have to get a sighted person to do for you as there isn't a way of telling how badly scratched a disc is. In any case, not all scratches will adversely effect the playing of the disc. I have found some discs have had large, even deep scratches and played fine but a disc with extremely fine, almost impossible to see scratches just threw the player into a panic. It really depends where the scratch, or scratches are and how severely it interferes with the discs reflective capability. As a last resort, you might think about using unbranded write once discs, they are not very expensive. Re: NLS BOOK QUESTIONS
I totally agree, and I definitely appreciate the books that have been marked up with chapters. The only two things I'll add is that I'm not sure how much I want to slow down the process of converting taped books over to the digital format to get everything marked up. The second thing is that although DAISY marked up books are the best, even without this markup, it's still much easier to navigate around a digital book with minimal markup than it is to deal with tapes. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 5/18/2010 4:44 PM, DJ DOCTOR P wrote: High Chris, Here is what's wrong with the concept you described. Right now I am assisting Applian Technologies to improve accessibility with JAWS 11 screen reader their new software product called Replay Telecorder for Skype. This software allows you to record Skype calls in 5 different ways including audio only recordings which most of us want while sighted users will use it to record the video signal from the webcam while making a Skype call. It's a Skype call recording software program. Right now entering the product key is not possible with JAWS 11 but the developer sent me an updated version of Replay Telecorder 'release candidate' and the product key entry is accessible. So if you want to try the demo you are warned in advance here about this issue. The GUI interface needs some tweaking. Right now you can use the route JAWS to PC cursor and locate the text 'picture-in-picture' which you can click with left or right mouse click as I have forgotten which one you need to do in order to bring up the context menu for the recording setting type you want. I choose 'none' which means only record for me as audio. That is no video will be recorded during the Skype call. It has only 2 menus. You access them with alt+f and alt+h. They are hidden but keyboard shortcuts work. The default folder where recordings go is in Vista C:\Users\Your Name\Documents\Replay Telecorder\ That is the Documents folder. Recordings are saved as .AVI format. These play very well in Windows Media Player 11 which is my default media player. A user told me there was an issue when playing back the .AVI file within Winamp. Might need to update the codecs I told her. These .AVI files can easily be converted to .mp3 format with a converter like Replay converter. But I have not attempted this here. You run Skype first. Minimize the program, open Replay Telecorder program, minimize or alt+tab back to Skype, start a call, alt+tab back to Replay Telecorder and press alt+f and choose 'record'. Recording starts. When done choose alt+f within Replay Telecorder and 'stop record'. Recording is saved as .AVI file. The default recording setting is 'picture-in-picture' so you will have to change it to 'none' which is audio only format using your route JAWS to PC cursor and then navigation keys. You change the recording settings by locating the text within the GUI interface that reads as 'picture-in-picture' as explained earlier here. Pressing insert+NUMPad 3 reads the status bar. If the developer improves it a little it will be fully accessible with JAWS 11. Only time will tell what improvements will be done but I am successfully using Replay telecorder 1.1 RC 7 which is not available as a download right now on the Applian website. Do you want me to notify you when a new accessible version is released? If yes, emal me at petro...@yahoo.com Put in subject line Replay Telecorder. I do not work for Applian. Just a volunteer. I make no commissions. The above is only my experience. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Re: NLS BOOK QUESTIONS
High Chris, Here is what's wrong with the concept you described. Lets say hypothetically that you had to put your book down for one reason or another, you go back to it later but you can't remember how the story line came about. This is why I feel that jump from chapter to chapter feature is needed. I am willing to bet that I'm not the only one that feels this way. If you can't move back and fourth freely, it defeats the perpis of reading any book. My best regards. Re: NLS BOOK QUESTIONS
I'm going off of my memory here, but I believe I've also seen commercial recordings and older tape recordings where NLS has gone back and inserted some markups to facilitate navigation by chapter or heading. I've also seen older books which have been rerecorded in the new digital format complete with DAISY markups for headings and chapters. Like Dennis said, how much navigation is explained at the beginning of each book. You'll also hear whether the book has been converted from a commercial recording or an older tape recording. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 5/18/2010 11:43 AM, dennis wrote: its relative to the book. usually books that used to be on cassette don't have the chapter jump. sometimes they do in cases of books that are short stories. it says at the beginning of every book weather or not you can jump and how much you can jump. - Original Message - From: "Robert doc Wright" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Tuesday, May 18, 2010 11:40 AM Subject: Re: NLS BOOK QUESTIONS did you double check your settings with the books you downloaded? the majority of the books I read come from the BARD sight and I have no problems moving from chapter to chapter. - Original Message - From: "DJ DOCTOR P" To: "PC audio discussion list.
