Re: comparison between the LS-7 and DM-620

2011-07-14 Thread Dave Scrimenti
I'm trying to figure out which recorder to get also. Not sure whether to go
with the DM4 or LS7. If you get the LS7, I encourage you to do some blind
listening tests to determine how much difference you notice with various
sampling rates with this machine. I know it's good, but considering its
price, Olympus could only spend so much on mics, pres, and converters.
Anyway, be interested to hear your thoughts after listening.

I'll just be doing out door stuff. As far as spending hundreds or
thousands
on mikes and mixers and stuff like that goes, hell to the yeah I would if
I

could and had it. I've even told Neal Eweres so. I told him I'd get one of
the Sound-devices recorders if I had the thousands for them. Actually I
can

play 96000KHZ 24 bit files. I've already made some with Sound Forge 10. No
offence taken. I just wanted to know your thoughts is all. But, yeah, I've
even gotten away with 32 bit audio with Audacity too. But, that's for
another time. Point is, I'm a purest, and I want to record things at the
purest sound possible. But yeah, don't feel bad about what you said, it's
your feelings and that's about all, and that's all I wanted to know. What
you felt.

I don't know which one you should buy, but I certainly wouldn't go for the
ls7 for the 96/24 sampling rate. What are you going to record that you
believe requires such a high sampling rate, especially since you'll
usually
have to downsample to 44.1/16 anyway? And are you planning to spend
hundreds

or thousands on microphones and pre-amps so you'll actually notice the
difference? I don't mean to sound harsh or sarcastic, but I don't see the
necessity of going to 96/24 with what is essentially a consumer recorder.
Even Neal Ewers in his podcast says he rarely uses those high rates.

I thought as much. The DM-620 sounded to me like a glorified DM-2 when I
first read about it. So, at the time I said no,
I'l stick to trying for the DM-4 thanks. But then along comes the LS-7
and
makes me think again. It's cheaper then the DM-4, it sounds better, and
it
can record in full LPCM 96000KHZ at 24 bit. That's blue-ray audio. I
don't
know. We'll see, but I think I'll get this one instead. I mean, the
catchy

things about the DM-4 are the text to speech, speech recognition, and the
DAISY player. But, it can only record in DVD quality namely 48000KHZ at
16

bit. As much as I like the 3 above mentioned things about the DM-4, I'm
really thinking about the LS-7. What do you guys think. Which should I go

Subject: comparison between the LS-7 and DM-620

I've purchased both the Olympus Ls-7 and the DM-620 and want to post a
brief
comparison and review of the two recorders.
The short version: I'm going to return the DM-620 to amazon.
Although both recorders have three mics, the Ls-7 has better mics -- the
two
side mics stick out more than the DM-620 mics. there is no comparison re
the
quality of voice recordings; the LS-7 gives a much richer, life-like bass
sound to recordings, even when recording in MP# mode.
The DM-620 does not have a pre-record mode, which buffers two seconds
of

recording; the LS-7 has this mode.
The DM-620 also does not have a 100HZ or 300HZ low-cut filter; you can
either turn the low cut filter on or off on the DM-620.
The LS-7 has a 100HZ and 300HZ low cut filter choice.
both recorders have the same button configuration, which, in my opinion,
is
inferior to the Dm-420 or Dm-520. the record,/pause and stop buttons are
on
the front face of both recorders, not on the side as they are on the
DM-520.
The case on both recorders is terrible; it is really a sleeve. It does
not

have a flap that opens and closes, nor does it have the kickstand
feature
like the dM-520 case.

Both recorders have the same level of voice guidance; 95% of the menu
choices talk. Neither recorder gives you system memory info, nor can you
set
the clock by voice as far as I know.
But all of the record, lay, file, etc, selections speak on both
recorders.

In short, if you are looking for an excellent digital recorder, spend a
few
more bucks and get the LS-7. You won't be

Re: Observations with bluetooth versus 3.5 mm cable

2011-07-14 Thread Steve Jacobson
Chris,

The way I look at it, if you like the sound better through BlueTooth then that
is probably all that should matter. As a matter of accuracy, though, the cable
should really give you better sound because it will be passing the full analog
output from a digital source without any of the side-effects of possible
BlueTooth bandwidth restirctions. If you are plugging your cable into a
computer, it is receiving its analog signal directly from the computer's sound
card
which has on it a digital to analog converter. When you use BlueTooth, the
signal is being transferred digitally via a wireless connection, just as you
said,
but it undergoes some processing and possible data compression as it is
transmitted. These parameters can vary, though. At the very least, though,
Bluetooth cannot make the sound any better than it originally was. When it
gets to your earphones, it is decoded and turned into an analog signal probably
by a less expensive digital to analog circuit than exists in your computer.
The signal then passes along wires, although they are very short, from the
output
of the digital to analog converter in your headphones to the earpieces, just
like your cable does.

So are you wrong to think it sounds better? No, I don't think so. Something
in the Bluetooth circuitry is changing the sound in a way that fits your
preferences. The earphones may even be better matched to the output of the
built-in digital to analog converter than they are to your computer's sound
card via the cable. While I like my BlueTooth headphones, I think I sometimes
hear some data compression effects that are a little like low rate MP3 files
but the convenience is worth it. The point here is really just to point out
that the reason it sounds better to you is probably not because BlueTooth is
digital.
There may even be some settings that might explain it. Some bluetooth devices
in computers actually act like separate sound cards with their own settings
and may differ from the settings applied to the output jack of your computer's
sound card.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I think you're right Steve. My bluetooth stack installs an additional
sound card, Bluetooth AV Audio, which it switches to on the fly as soon
as the headphones are connected. When disconnected, it switches back to
my onboard High Definition Audio sound card again on the fly. So I think
the bluetooth AV audio driver sounds better to my ears anyway.

But like I say, I was just curious that was all hence this thread.

Which program are you using to rip the CD's? I assume you're using the
same program on both computers, and ditto for the other settings? I
suppose the hardware, CD reader, device driver, ..., and even processor
might make a difference, so ripping at the slowest possible rate and
giving the CD ripping program the highest priority setting might help.
Also, what differences is the person saying they are noticing? I doubt I
know enough to answer your question, but I would think these would be
important pieces of information.

Re: determing which encoder is used

2011-07-14 Thread Clifford Blackwell
I'm using the ripper in the Real Player, latest version in both cases. They
are definitely ripping to 320 kbps .mp3 at constant bit rate. Both
computers use Windows xp though one is home and the other Media Center.

I was wondering if there was a way to see if one was using lame or perhaps
if they were different versions of lame or some other encoding engine.

Thanks for the effort. If you or anyone else has ideas, I'll be happy to
know.

RE: comparison between the LS-7 and DM-620

2011-07-14 Thread John Riehl
recorders have three mics, the Ls-7 has better mics -- the
 two
side mics stick out more than the DM-620 mics. there is no comparison re
 the
quality of voice recordings; the LS-7 gives a much richer, life-like
 bass
sound to recordings, even when recording in MP# mode.

You won't be sorry.

Hi List.
If this is off topic then I apologise.
I'm wondering whether anyone has used the Kay-Tel blog for downloading
the old Majestic Record albums that are listed on there or whether
they're also available commercially on cd.
I ask because I've been trying to use the site but have been told by my
antivirus software that it's blocked.

Would appreciate your feedback.

I don't know which one you should buy, but I certainly wouldn't go for the
ls7 for the 96/24 sampling rate. What are you going to record that you
believe requires such a high sampling rate, especially since you'll usually
have to downsample to 44.1/16 anyway? And are you planning to spend
hundreds or thousands on microphones and pre-amps so you'll actually notice
the difference? I don't mean to sound harsh or sarcastic, but I don't see
the necessity of going to 96/24 with what is essentially a consumer
recorder. Even Neal Ewers in his podcast says he rarely uses those high
rates.

Which should I go
for in your opinion?
