I use it all the time, you have to watch that when you order labels a
second time, you order a differentletter otherwise you will get the same
numbers, otherwise its fine.

RE: The difference a subwoofer can make

2014-11-28 Thread John Gurd
Hi Walter, that sounds like a great set up. A well-controlled sub can sound
amazing. I have a Linn Sismik with an Arcam amplifier in my living room but
I didn't know Arcam do a DAC for a PC. I think I might look into a set up
like that myself.

Thanks for sharing.

Subject: The difference a subwoofer can make

Hi folks. I've been auditioning at home the B & W PV1d subwoofer. Most
people will assume that subwoofers are all about bass and nothing else.
Maybe I should describe my set up before going on. My Source is a custom
built tower PC. I'm using an Arcam R-pack DAC with a Chord USB interconnect
going from the PC to the Dac. The Phonos going from the Dac to the
amplifier which is an Arcam Solo Neo are Chord Chameleon interconnects. My
Speaker cable is also Chord cables and the Speakers are the B & W CM5s plus
the B & W PV1D subwoofer. OK, Before installing the subwoofer the sound
from my system was very good indeed but since the use of the PV1 there has
been a profound difference. The CM5s are extremely effective despite being
stand mount and their bass response is very good also. However, with the
PV1 the sound has a completely different quality and the sound stage has
changed out of all recognition. It is a very warm and solid sound and very
large. Bass is deep but very well controlled. On Saturday evening I was
sitting listening to a few tracks and was playing at a reasonably high level
but it sounded powerful but not "loud." The thing though that really caught
my attention was how wide and high the sound was, it filled the whole wall,
in fact it appeared the sound was larger than the room I was in and in
truth, although I have good spacial awareness I was unsure where the
speakers were placed as the sound was very much forward of the speakers and
had great depth. I could tell the vocalist was right in front of me but the
drums were behind him and other instruments could be placed accurately. It
is very hard to describe to others what I heard but for those of you who
have or have had some site, it is kinda like sitting down in front of a 42
inch TV but when you turn it on, the picture looks like a 65 inch screen.
The subwoofer has filled out a great more than just an improved bass line
but the whole picture has been dramatically altered. When I listen to a
radio drama it almost sounds as if the actors are giving me a private show
and are acting out right in front of me. I've got to say, I'm mightily
impressed with this sub and for those who can afford a good sub, I would
heartily recommend it.

There is one fly in the ointment though; The sub being digital has a number
of settings one can adjust to suit your needs whether it be to match a
different set of speakers, if it is for music listening or movie or gaming
etc, these settings are not accessible to the blind. However when they are
set they are fixed until you wish to change them and even if you turn off
the sub and turn it back on, these settings remain. The off and on switch
is also digital so you don't really know it is on or off, unless you can
hear it but it automatically senses the lack of a signal and turns itself
off. It also has an auto switch off facility which I have set to 30 minutes
so when I go to bed and turn the amp off, if after 30 minutes it doesn't
sense a signal it switches off and switches on again when you turn on the
amp in the morning. There is a "on the fly" volume control but again, it is
digital and not accessible but there is a work around. I'm so impressed
that I will most likely buy a PV1 provided the dealer can get me a good
price which he says he can but even if he couldn't, I'd still get one as I'm
so truly impressed. I'm sitting here almost giggling at my confusion when
I was listening, I heard sounds from about 3 or 4 feet to the left and right
of where my speakers are placed but there is a cupboard on one side and a
wall on the other and my brain was telling me, it isn't possible because
there is a cupboard there and a wall over there, but my ears are saying, it
doesn't matter, we are hearing it come from that location, a bit of most
enjoyable confusion. I thought I would give you all the benefit of what
I've experienced here Oh!! one final thought, it makes mp3 files sound so
very good despite the compression. Walter.

RE: The difference a subwoofer can make

2014-11-28 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi John. Yes, Arcam do a few dacs but the one I have is the R-Pack USB DAC.
With the subwoofer I find that the USB interconnect is better if you use the
Chord cable. Without the subwoofer things are a bit clinical but you get
great imagery and clarity but as I said, a little too clinical. However
with the addition of the sub that clinical characteristic is neutralised and
you get the benefit of a solid bass line but also clarity at the top end.
The Arcam R-Pack USB dac is their entry level model but is very good,
especially when it comes to playing mp3 files. I've compared listening to a
CD on a separate CD player with the MP3 file through the dac and there is
very little difference. Unless you were doing an A/B test you wouldn't know
which one is playing and even then, you might not detect the difference.
The Subwoofer is great but the only drawback is setting the default level,
that is digital with a touch screen but once set, it need not be touched
again ever. It does have a "on the fly" volume in case you want some extra
woomf on a particular track but once the sub is turned off and then turned
back on, the "on the fly" volume control goes back to its neutral setting.
Walter.

I too have one and rarely use it. My reason is I have the tiniest bit of
vision and if I use huge print I can see the item's title. If one had no
other choice, the unit is okay, but if you have an iPhone, you have several
options which work very well.

What model of iPhone are you using Digit-Eyes on? I’m curious as to whether it
may be quicker on the iPhone 6 and IOS 8, I have to admit that Digit-Eyes is
not one of those Apps I use each and every day though it does come into its own
when I do need to use it.

I can’t comment on the labeled as I don’t have one though I’m now in two minds
as to whether it might be worth getting one or not and I appreciate the input
from others on this topic, the talking Barcode Reader has also been referred to
and its also available.

I have a 6+, but I used digit-eyes on a 5 and by the time you positioned
the camera properly, etc. it could take some time and sometimes I could
not get it to see the label, and the specialized devices work
immediately, so this is why I use them instead.

Update on TapinRadio Crashing

2014-11-28 Thread Steve Pattison

Hi all,

Recently there was some discussion about TapinRadio crashing for some
people on the list.

I mentioned that I had solved this problem by uninstalling my anti-virus
program which is ESET Smart Security version 8, updating TapinRadio with
the latest station presets and then re-installing ESET Smart Security.

Since then I've found that every time I update the station presets in
TapinRadio with my anti-virus program installed I get the problem other
people have reported with an error similar to web downloader not
responding. So I have actually uninstalled my anti-virus program,
updated the TapinRadio presets and then reinstalled ESET Smart Security
for a second time.

After the second installation of ESET Smart Security I went into the
options of TapinRadio and turned off the option to check for new station
listings automatically.

Since I've turned this option off I haven't had any problems with
TapinRadio crashing. However while I can now listen to stations on
TapinRadio I can't update the presets for fear of TapinRadio crashing again.

I'm using Windows 7 32-bit with all important Windows Updates installed.

I hope a solution to this problem can be found for those of us who are
getting the crashes in TapinRadio.

Regards Steve.

we have one and it works fine! make sure to back up just in case things
get scrambled, since if you make a lot of labels you'll not want to lose
them.

Re: Penfriend Audio Labeler

2014-11-28 Thread Dane Trethowan
Thanks, some people unfortunately just have built-in prejudices/bias or just
like holding a grudge

I’ve never seen this item before so am greatly impressed by the amount of input
given by other users of the labelling device, they’re cheap enough and its
always handy to have a backup “stand-Alone” device.

Others have pointed out that performance of the labeled may be better than what
I already have? If so then that speaks volumes.

Digit-Eyes IOS App

2014-11-28 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I mentioned this App when talking about the Penfriend Audio Labeler.

I've just been up onto the Apps Store to rredownload Digit-Eyes and discovered
that a "Digit-Eyes Light" version is available, I have the purchased version
which I think I may have purchased nearly 5 years ago now.

Just to summaries, I think Digit-Eyes does much of what Penfriend Audio Labeler
does however Digit-Eyes also reads and recognises Barcodes thanks to its
interactive online database, oviously the iPhone is connected to the Internet
all the time thus Digit-Eyes can make full and interactive use of this.

Anyway try it for yourself with the "Light" version though I'm not sure how the
"Light" version is limited compared to the "Pro".

RE: Penfriend Audio Labeler

2014-11-28 Thread David Boden
I have been using the original version for two or three months. I
understand RNIB has just brought out a new version.

The sound quality is very low-fi.

I sometimes find The small labels difficult to find on frozen food. I place
a couple of boxes of frozen food in a bag and label the bag. In that way,
the same bag can be reused for other food. I find the labels sometimes peel
off and get lost in the freezer. Well worth trying, in my view, but be
aware of these limitations.

Just Under 4 Weeks Till Christmas

2014-11-28 Thread Dane Trethowan
Just ordered my Christmas present, a new Samsung Galaxy Note3 phone though its
said that this phone is a cross between a tablet and a phone.

I'll let you know how I get on, starting and setting up is usually the most
difficult task but after that's done I don't see any major issues springing up.

Just a tip for those getting into the Android game - and this is based on past
experience with other Android devices I've had -, make sure you have a
Bluetooth or wired keyboard to hand as you're most certainly going to need it
at least to help you set the device up.

There are thankfully some excellent tutorials around for those starting up with
Android, Talkback and Accessibility.

I mentioned that I had solved this problem by uninstalling my anti-virus

After the second installation of ESET Smart Security I went into the

Since I've turned this option off I haven't had any problems with
TapinRadio crashing. However while I can now listen to stations on

I'm using Windows 7 32-bit with all important Windows Updates installed.

I hope a solution to this problem can be found for those of us who are

Hi, try DVD Audio Extractor; just Google it and you'll find it. It's
shareware so you pay about $30 or thereabouts, but after that all updates
are free; I use it; it's about as accessible as things get; I'm sure there
are other options but others can fill you in on those, but for my money DVD

I would agree, this software is completely accessible. if I was being really
picky, the 2 minor points I don't like so much about it, are that it doesn't
seem to have that many really high quality output options, and I also find
the volume a bit low on the audio files it produces. a quick run through
wavepad's amplify feature soon sorts out this second issue however.

Audio extractor is The One hands down.

RE: a cd problem

2014-11-28 Thread frank cuta
Hi Joe,

Boy its good to see that name! I remember when we used to talk microphones
on the phone even before the Playback years.

Note: I see that I have this folder sorted by size instead of receive date
so I accidently pulled up a question that you had back in June. I do not
care, I am going to take a stab at it anyways!

Addressing your problem 3 things come to mind. On your computer you can
produce both mp 3 and wav recorded CDs. The mp3 will often play on a newer
boom box but not on an older juke box or CD player.

Second, some recorders and players are picky about the brand of blank CD.
Just try a different brand.

Third, some players are picky about digitall errors. You can reduce the
error rate by going into settings in your CD burner software and turning
down the recording rate. (slower is better)

Take care,
Frank Cuta

 Hi, All,

I recently started using a laptop to burn cd's. They play perfectly in a
blue ray player and in a very cheap cd player. They won't play in my Sony
Jukebox.

I will very much appreciate your thoughts. Hopefully there's a remedy.

portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-28 Thread Mary Otten
I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with
portable bluetooth capable devices. For reasons not particularly
relevant to this list, I won't have access to that speaker during the
school year, since it will be going to school with my spouse. So I'm
wondering about other alternatives, perhaps even some that might not be
as pricy as the Bose. I've just read about the B&W t7, which actually
costs more than the Bose. Then there are Braven models which look
interesting, albeit not much less costly than the Bose.

Since all my devices are ios, I could also use airplay, not necessary
to have bluetooth. What are people using and really liking in this
category?

Mary

Hi!

Shame you can’t be with your Bose Soundlink III, I wouldn’t be without mine.

So a less costly alternative, have you looked at the Logitech UE - Ultimate
Ears) - Boom? Its longer than the Soundlink and not as tall but is built very
well, sounds reasonable enough but doesn’t go quite as loud as the Soundlink
but still goes very loud - you don’t want a Soundlink III at full volume unless
you want to lose your hearing .

So what did you think of the B&O? I’ve never heard any of their stuff yet.

Well, I have heard of the logitec, but haven't actually heard that
particular unit. And I'm not sure what you meant by b&o. I know you're
familiar with B&W, so don't guess that was the question. Color me
confused. I have heard neither the Braven that I initially asked about,
nor the B&W t7.

Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?

2014-11-28 Thread Dane Trethowan
No, B&O being Bang And Olvsin, hope I spelt that correctly .

Now there are several Logitech Boom models and the UE Boom is the one I’m
referring to, I’d put it just behind the Bose Soundlink III in quality but not
by much and that says a lot for the Bose actually given its smaller size.

Having said that however the Logitech - in the value for money steaks - is a
good buy given that its half the price or thereabouts of the Bose and quality
level is still pretty good.

I have only one small complaint about the Logitech UE, when the battery level
starts to run down the volume level falls and I’m sick of these teething
problems that pop up in portable Bluetooth speaker units, if Bose can get it
right then why can’t other manufacturers.
