There's HD tracks and I tracks. Just remember you need 1 of the new players
that will play 96 KHZ 24 bit files.

You can add a Bookmark in Winamp with control alt b. So there should be no
conflict.
If that's not what you're refering to, then I don't know.

Subject: Another Winamp question

I am back with another Winamp question after learning that Control Alt N is
the key combination to add a Winamp stream url. The problem is that
control Alt N brings up NVDA. So I need to change the hot key in Winamp to
mark a stream. I would appreciate it if someone will tell me step by step
how to accomplish this. Thanks.

Hi all

I realize the subject line might be a bit confusing so please let me explain.

I have been wondering for some time whether it is possible to play media files
like mp3 files for example through two different sound cards at the same time.
I realize that this may sound unusual but I may have need of someth9ing like
this in the near future.

Say for example you have two different usb sound devices and you would like to
have the music to come through both of these devices? Is such a thing possible?

SV: Google Play Music

2016-01-23 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi Mary,
I must admit I love using Apple music.
The only disadvantage to most services is that very old recordings are
pretty hard to fine around.
I've almost gone the same route as you with Spotify and so on. I stil like
the audio quality of Spotify, but sadly it's no longer accessible on pc.

In Denmark where I live my internet provider has a pretty good free music
service with a tons of music. I'm just beginning to using that, so I'm not
totally familiar with the quality but their app on iPhone looks very
accessible.

We live 3 persons here in the house, so the family version of apple Music
certainly apeal to us.

I wasn't aware that there is another android-related list for the VI.
I'm familiar with the eyes-free list, which is a google group and has lots
of traffic. I don't see myself giving up iTunes match. I have a lot of stuff
in there, and Apple recently raised the song limit to match others, so no
problem there. I suspect it depends on what you're looking for as to which
service you like better. There were some folk on the android list, which has
a certain anti-apple tone to it rather often, who admitted that in their
view Apple Music had more songs than Google. But the impression you get from
an unsuccessful search or the opposite undoubtedly contributes to the
opinion. I had spotify for a while and dropped it. Same for Pandora. My pc
is old and not connected to anything in the house, not even via airfoil. So
even if I were interested in google music from the pc, it wouldn't be this
pc.

Don’t care any more as there are so many good alternatives anyway, the best
thing that every happened in the media player world was the announcement made
that development would cease on Winamp and as yet I’ve not heard any convincing
reason as to why anyone should mourn the loss of this software.

If a new company has taken Winamp over and development has started again then
all well and good but I do think the player became far too bloated is is very
much over rated.

The iPhone 6S isn’t all that much thicker though technology has changed of
course between then and now.

At least one could say that the speaker of that iPod touch was certainly
audible unlike that of the Victor Reader Scream and that’s one of the mysteries
to me, how a speaker of that size sounded so God Damn Awful, guess the only
thing that can be said is that - in the case of the Victor Reader Stream 1ST
generation - “Past Sins Are Best Forgiven And Forgotten”.

Hi,
Clone the vocal track, and delay it a little bit for example 35 ms then pan

This isn't the best way, but it might emulate the doubling feeling just a

Well I certainly didn’t read it that way, the Lightning connector is exactly
what the plug is, and that can.. we.. connect to any number of things.

Via Interface - given the nature of the discussion - he’s talking about
recording - I thought he was referring to say a Sound Device with inputs or
outputs or something similar to that, an Interface in other words to connect
other pieces of equipment, microphones, guitars, synths and so on.

An excellent site has thus been provided by a fellow member which I’m sure
will help out in this regard, its all covered there.

The hosting for the pc audio list and the domain name will
expire at the end of December. The list software has been
problematic for over a year. Not sending messages to some
people, not allowing some people to send messages to the

What I'm about to say is my personal point of view but when it comes to
Audacity then I can only say that people just have time to waste.

Yeah sure! its free but all the ucking about that people seem to have to
do to get the thing working when there's stuff like Total Recorder just
sitting there waiting to be part of your software collection and again,
the software doesn't cost a Kings Ransom - even if you get the Video
Edition which I have -.

I haven't played with too many of the add-ons available though I've used
the speech add-on and its not too bad, again cheap at $32 I think it was.

The Editor in the Professional version does a pretty slick hob though
I've changed a few of the keyboard shortcuts to reflect my personal
tasts, changing shortcut keys isn't difficult either.

And finally, You're absolutely spot-on when you talk of the excellent
support from High Criteria, just go onto their web site and look at the
various tutorials and primers, not only on products from High Criteria
but on associated topics such as recording different types of audio etc.

that you can split files in realtime manually. I don't even think it
can be done with GoldWave. Split by time many programs supports, but
split manually is something to struggle to find. The skedular is easy
to use and I like the fact that each dialog that might pup up have a
copy and debug button so you can send them all the info they need. It
also have a system as whereby you can save bug info settings to a file
and stuff so you can send to tech support. There staff is really
helpful and with such kind of tools they can easyer help you solve
problems and you can actually get the help you need. I really think
people should try it before they give it up. If you install it with
the default settings and don't change the driver moad, then you will
be fine on most newer systems.

handy to the fingertips and whoever set the price at High Criteria at

Anyway to the point, I've been setting up some schedules and other stuff

The sluggish menu navigation seems to have been fixed, there was a delay

Accessibility or lack thereof with a PC and Mac did get me thinking
about alternative paths one could take, after all Spotify is certainly
not the only subscriber based music service in a crowded market place.

As far as I'm ware the closest one could get to Spotify is Google
Play, I used this quite some time ago and I was able to access it
through all platforms though I have to admit that with the PC I used
Google Chrome and NVDA so don't know how good it would be with
Internet Explorer but it seemed to me that all buttons and so on were
standard.

Anyway the point here is that Spotify and Google Play both allow you
to stream and download the content - the latter in the case of a $10
 per month subscription -.

Failing all that one could try Pandora, there's a very accessible
client for Pandora and the Windows PC called Hope and another very
nice Pandora client for the Mac called Muse.

Of course Pandora will only let you stream your music, it won't let
you download the content to your computer.

There are a lot of people out there still using Winamp but the time will come -
if it hasn’t come already - when those people are going to run into
difficulties.

I’ve been playing with WMP for the last few days and I’m quite surprised at the
flexibility of the player, in fact I’d go so far as to say its been just about
a closely guarded secret smile.

Sure, WMP has some annoying problems in my opinion, its not very flexible when
it comes to playing Audio formats such as FLAC but for most people I’d imagine
this isn’t a problem and in any case, if you’re that concerned about playing
Lossless formats then you can use software to convert your FLAC collection to
Lossless Windows Media Audio.

My favourite player across platforms is VLC which just keeps getting better.

 Hi!

I'm setting up another Windows machine for someone who wants to stream
media files from the machine to DLAN compatible devices, in particular
 a Surround-Sound Receiver.

I'm no expert when ot comes to the DLNA side of things and I know this
topic does come up on the list from time to time, another Google
search was in order to see if I could discover any new information on
the topic, and low and behold, I found what seems to be quite a nice
tutorial on the subject, thought others on the list may find it interesting,
 helpful and instructive.

Hi. When I attach the AC plug I get no notification. I didn't try charging
via the usb because if a problem occurs then I have another element to
consider, is the fault with the player, the usb connection or my computer
etc. The AC was the most straightforward so I've used that but it must be
the default setting. When I'm more experienced I will try the usb and no
doubt I'll get a notification confirming usb charging, will have to wait and
see.

Last night I thought; what the hell, and put it on charge again over night.
I didn't do anything different as far as I know but in the morning I
disconnected it from the mains and turned it on and this time didn't get the
three beeps and the voice navigation was working. I won't do anything
involved with it until Friday when I'll get sighted help and if the charging
indicator shows full then I'll try exploring the player. In between now and
then I'll try working through some of the manual and try and make sense of
it. However though, it is working, so far anyway. I think though I'll buy
a replacement battery just to be on the safe side as they aren't too
expensive from Amazon. Walter.

Walter, the thing to keep in mind is that, when you plug it in, it should
say something like a c adapter connection or pc connection.
Then depending on your U S B settings, you must either select the a c
adapter setting, or it will be selected by default. Then once you here that,
you must press enter, it should then speak the promt: press ok to start
charging and once you here that you must press the enter key strait away.
You might not here any feedback at that point, but its very important you
press enter at that stage and no other button, because that dialog will
dismiss. What happened to you is that you plugged it in power, but you did
perhaps not confirm the charging aspect. Then it run on power only. So then
you took it out, and when it turn back on, it gave you free short beeps to
confirm that the battery is stil flat. It did not charge and therefore it
only work in the wall.

Hi all. This is a tentative inquiry regarding this voice recorder. I
bought it around 2-2.5 years ago but apart from a day or two of
investigation I have never used the machine. I took the battery from
the player and stored it all away for 2 and a half years or more. My
interest
has once more been rekindled but after replacing the battery, putting
 it
on
charge over night for around 8 hours I'm a little confused. When
attached to a mains outlet and I then turn on the player I get the
start tone and I can using the voice guidance navigate through the
 folders. Of course as
it
hasn't been used there is nothing in the folders but the voice
guidance does work. However if I disconnect the player from the mains
and again turn it on, I once more get the start up tone but around 3
 or 4 seconds later I
get
3 quick beeps but the voice guidance doesn't work as when it is
 attached
to
the mains. I at first thought the battery isn't charging but if that
were the case then it wouldn't start and I wouldn't get the start tone
so the player must be getting power from the battery. Unfortunately I
will have no sighted help until Friday to see what is on the screen
but if anybody can tell me what the 3 quick beeps mean and if it is a
problem what can I do about it. Hope you can help but if you do need
 more info, I'll try and
get
 that on Friday. Walter.

Having listened to a youtube video on a comparison between the original
5, 6 and 6 plus, I can say that I definitely notice a difference. It's
most noticeable between the 5 and 6, but even from the 6 and 6 plus, the
plus does sound a little more clearer. Unfortunately, the microphone
that the uploader was using wasn't super high quality, but it was
certainly decent enough to detect the levels of bass between the 5 and
6. I've also got a buddy who's got a really nice sounding mic, a yeti,
and while in stereo, the differences between the two phones is huge, the
5 and 6.
Take care.

So now I’m searching for a utility that will tell what cd is inserted, and the

Transrecord CD Info is a free program that will give you the info about a

the driver is installed, all of its properties can be
adjusted with JAWS. In addition, all the controls on the unit are
tactile and are either toggle buttons or volume sliders. When the
toggle buttons are pressed, they are depressed so a blind person or a
sighted person in a dark location can tactilely feel if the button is
activated.

I hope this has been helpful.

Steve,

It all depends on the kind of system you have and the fussiness of
your ears. At the end of last year, I bought a Dell 8700 computer with
the Intel i7 4770 processor, the fastest chip on the market at the
time. It had built-in HD audio. When the Dell pre-amp was configured,
the audio sounded as good as the M-Audio 24/96 sound card I bought 10
years ago with the highly regarded Casio drivers. The computer came
with separate jacks for a quadrophonic speaker setup as well as 5.1
audio in addition to the regular jacks for traditional stereo, line in
and microphones. Computers with less sophisticated microprocessors
may not have as many options or HD audio.

That said, I want one sound card for the screen reader and one sound
card for audio playback and recording. To that end, I bought a Roland
Duo USB audio interface for $37 on eBay. It normally retails for $200.
Dancing Dots recommends this audio interface to its customers using
Windows computers. The company is the leader in accessible music and
audio production by the blind. The audio from the Roland interface
sounds real and lifelike and instruments are more distinct than the
integrated sound card. This should be no surprise as the audio is
processed outside the machine in a different cycle from the computer.
Try as they do, Intel and Dell cannot deliver in a mass-market product
the quality that audio focused companies have been doing for years. If
you just listen to spoken word audio and popular music, the integrated
card could be acceptable. If you like listening to classic jazz
performances, classical music, or instrumental music and deejay or
stream capture or edit audio on your PC, then a second sound card or
an audio interface is needed. For a lousy $37, including shipping, why
is anyone anguishing and spending precious brain cells on such an
obvious decision.

Honestly, all this fuss about a FM radio, everyone knows that a
FM radio in a device such as this - whether it be a Phone or
similar - is bound to be inferior to a dedicated FM radio.

The only real reason I can think of that Hims Inc would bother
putting one of these into their products is because they can, a
bit like Tecsun giving you 3,000 memories into a radio, not
because they particularly serve any practical purpose having
that many, just because

Tecsun can do it.

Its the OCR and associated functionality that I would think is
more appealing about this equipment than a FM radio.

A couple of things here.

I got a VR Stream - First Generation - in 2009, 5 years ago.

At the time I was warned about the VR Streams dreadful speaker but - given
the size and not knowing any better - I defended the VR Streams speaker,
after all it seemed its better to have a speaker than not have one as my
previous player - Bookport - didn't have one.

So 2009 rolled on and we came to December 9 when I took delivery of an
iPhone 3GS and this proved to be an eye opener.

Not only did the speaker of this device sound ten times as good, the device
had 100 times the functionality of the VR Stream as I was soon to discover.

Now yes, the VR Stream is a Daisy/Audio player but the iPhone did all that
soon and it wasn't long before I started using the iPhone to play Daisy
Books and so forth with, not only that I had the benefits - even then - of
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology so I could stream my material and even listen
to Internet Radio stations in much the same way as those who use the current
generation of the VR Stream do so really, the VR Stream is offering
absolutely nothing that we don't already have if we choose to look around.

On the other hand, Hims Inc are breaking new ground with their new offering
and we find - yet again - that Human Beware are on the catchup roundabout
and still trying to tell us all in their marketing stuff that they know the
market for the visually impaired? What they actually mean is that they know
their own loyal market.

in a minority. I do use bluetooth on my mobile phones, for
pairing the phones etc and have unsuccessfully tried to link
a bluetooth keyboard but have ordered a different one so
don't give up that easily. I think humanware should give us
the choice, whether they will incorporate bluetooth into a
future product is anyone's guess, they will have to do
something good otherwise they will lose out to the market
again, when the vr stream was first released there was not
many similar players but now you have many more and some of
them are better in their own way but it depends on what you
require. I think they had to bring out the new stream mark 2
rather quickly to keep the market otherwise many people
would have gone away from humanware products in favour of
say I devices or similar gadgets which can do much more in
their own way. Again it is personal choice. What will come
after stream mark 2 has gone the whole way as it will
inevitably do in perhaps 5 or more years time, there will be
much different demand. It is good that stream mark 2 has the
wifi so there is several options as to what they can put
that to use with. So far it is just internet radio for me in
the uk and Europe and some book services in the states but
of course for me they are not available. They will add more

Hi Adrien, I've changed the subject line to better suit the

I didn't know that a survey was done so thanks for pointing

I can see how a lot of people wouldn't have rated Bluetooth
as being critical to them but really that does illustrate
more than anything to me just how Human Beware actually
work, that company doesn't really want to market to people

For example, those of us who have been using mobile phones

we buy the appropriate equipment such as speakers, hands

Hims Inc obviously want to market their products far and
wide to help those who need good accessibility live as
independent life as is possible and - wherever possible -
integrate into a full working environment and use - wherever
possible - all the tools that are available in the

I don't have any problems with the approach that Human

It's gonna be the best portable device for blind people ever.

Hello all.
I'm sorry if this has been discussed loads of times before, I'm new to
the list and unsure how to search passed messages.

I am totaly blind and am looking for an mp3 player. here are a few points.
i am using a sony nwz model at the moment, this is fine but it's only
16 gb. I have about 3 tb of music and collect records, so this is
getting to be not nearly enough even for day to day use, especially if
i go on holidays.
I don't care if it talks or not, in a lot of ways i'd rather it didn't.
I know that you can get big takling ipods, but I don't think I like
those too much.
The most important thing for me is that on my sony I can use the up
and down to go back and forth by album and left and right by track. I
love this feature about it, but I would like something with simple
menues so that if I so wish I can put it on shuffle for a while.

Do you folks have any suggestions to check out?
sorry for the long post!
Rob.

Honestly, all this fuss about a FM radio, everyone knows that a FM radio
in a device such as this - whether it be a Phone or similar - is bound to
be inferior to a dedicated FM radio.

The only real reason I can think of that Hims Inc would bother putting one
of these into their products is because they can, a bit like Tecsun giving
you 3,000 memories into a radio, not because they particularly serve any
practical purpose having that many, just because Tecsun can do it.

Its the OCR and associated functionality that I would think is more
appealing about this equipment than a FM radio.

something not mentioned in the pres release, on the Hims website or in
a TechTalk presentation was the version of USB used. All current
portable book readers use USB 2.0. this includes the next generation
Victor Stream. The current version of USB is 3.0, which has
significantly faster file transfer rates than USB 2.0. I sent an
e-mail to Hims last week and have not received a response. If Hims
opted for USB 2.0, I will likely wait to learn if others introduce a
portable book reader with OCR that includes USB 3.0.

this issue reminds me of quality recording capacity in the last
generation of portable book players. the Plextalk Pocket and Book
Port Plus were the only units with a quality recorder. I have since
used the recorder for various purposes, including making broadcast
quality recordings of lectures that later were aired on radio
stations. with the last generation of players, I'm glad I waited for
the Book Port Plus.

To be honest I couldn't give a damn, its the OCR part which is of interest

If OCR does well then I'll be most satisfied.

oh yes! after seeing the cost of the booksence when it came out i

Re: Really strange problem with winamp 5.07

2014-05-27 Thread Brian Olesen

Hi,
Here is the official answer about this from Gracenote.
Very sad, but 100 % reliable.

Best regards
Brian

Hello Brian,

Thank you for writing. The music lookup function on your Winamp application
is not working because the software developer unfortunately has not renewed
their license to use the Gracenote music recognition service, and their
license term has now expired.

I found their forum page, which confirms this information:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=377496

If you would like to continue accessing Gracenote's music recognition
service, you can look around. Other popular licensed applications include
iTunes and products by Sony, Creative, Samsung, Roxio and many others. Some
applications are freeware and some are commercial, and you can go to the
software developer's own web site for more information or to download.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Sonia

Until now it has presented the cd tracks fine, when he inserted a cd in the

But this functionality has stopped working. Now Jaws only says Artist
unknown, Album unknown and so on.

Any help will be highly apreciated.
He don’t wanna upgrade to the latest version as it has some issues. For
example it recognises all external drives as a portable music player and
wants to add them, which is annoying.

Hi Howard, Older televisions typically had enough speaker enclosure and
did not require something like a sound bar. The newer flat screen models
are the ones we speak of, and most if not all have multiple modes of input
and output, making it a simple matter of plugging in a stereo cable or
HDMI cable and making the connection.

How does one get the audio from the TV into any other device. My TV (a

has no outputs at all. All you get is the little internal speakers that
are (maybe) 24 inches apart. I also have another set (off brand) that I

I agree with pretty much everything that Walter has written below,
Soundbars

are a very convenient option, to illustrate the point let's take my
situation where I'm using a room with a small TV, I have a surround-sound
system in the lounge but don't want that in my Den, I just want something
I

can use with my Television.

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the
experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top Box
etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so
on.

It should be noted that - whatever system you used with your Television
these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in
those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of
string.

There are several reasons for the bad audio quality, the most obvious
being

that Television sets these days are getting to the point of being as thick
as a piece of cardboard thus good sound would really be defying the laws
of

physics.

Hi Tom. It is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If
a soundbar at $150 improves the sound quality from your TV then I
guess it is worthit. each person must decide what they can afford and
act accordingly.
If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then
feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality.
I
think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a
particular cinematic sound and in my opinion if it is for listening to
music seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it
is to use with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment.
If you are going to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to
audition the soundbar first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are
soundbars to suit every pocket the sound quality will generally match
the price. Walter.

Hi,
Yeah an iPhone is a hard headed battery consumer. :-)
So you won't get many hours reading time. But as one pointed out some people
don't have the option of buying much gear and for those an app might be a

Great to have all in one device if you can.
But battery life is a big consideration also. For me having real buttons is
the big advantage.
But then I use the mobile phone maybe only two or three times a month.

tasks are easier to perform on one device than another.

I use the oOtunes App for radio stations - oOtunes is the same system used
by the Victor Reader Stream as it happens - and skipping between radio
stations is about as logical as it gets, press the previous or the next
buttons, select a station from your favourites list, search for or browse
stations, press stop to stop or pause to pause and continue recording
depending on your settings, shake to stop or start etc.

Hi Dean,
There you have the problem. Maybe it's grounded but the units don't share

The PC and TV are on opposite walls so they are about 12 feet apart. so they
can't use the same outlet. The PC is plugged into a uninterrupted power
supply which has the three prong outlets and it is plugged into a three
pronged outlet which means it should be grounded.

Microsoft.net framework version 4.0 or higher in order to continue with the
installation. Being that I'm an average everyday computer user, who doesn't
mess around with my operating system, I have no idea as to what this all
means. What is Microsoft.net Framework 4.0? Why do I need this? and where
can I get it? Is it possible to install this so-called Microsoft Framework

hi,
and are you 100 % sure it's not electrical humming?
you can check that by touching it while you record. if it stops then it's a
grounding problem.

Hi Colin,

I don't know about the high pass filter, but I have found a different
solution which sounds fantastic to my ear.

In goldwave, go to Effects, Filter, Equalizer. From the presets, select
Inverse RIAA EQ curve. The effect was to remove too much base and boost the
treble too much, so I modified the numbers a bit. I'll send you my result.

Hi,
Another aproach is to buy and install any dvd as most movies are encrypted
nowadays.

Then an old baby like dvd shrink can do the actual ripping.
But as i've stated earlier it's much more efficient to not rip, but simply
copy over the entire disk to your harddisk and play the contents from
there, with a player of your favorit choice. Or if you want one single
file for the disk use an image program, and create a full disk image.
Physical hard drives are so inexpensive today that you probably can have
your intire collection on one single 3 or 4 tb drive, and what's more
importent with no loss of quality.

Any DVD HD can even do the whole ripping job for you, and at the same time
remove the encryption.

I use DVD Shrink; it's old, but rarely fails. Allows you to only
pick parts of the disc (like the main film but miss out the
trailer, for example) and choose things like which subtitle or
audio track/s you want.

ALso, as the name suggests, will if needed compress the video so
it will fit on a standard writable disc.

well first ctrl shift f stands for fast, not particularly fast forward.
The way you can fast forward is to tab to the seak option and then right and

My Recommendation is to switch to a more blind friendly music player.
There are quite allot, and personally I have 2 favorits ah maybe 3. :-) 1.
VLC player which originally is a video player you also can use for music
playing and all other kind of standard media files.
2. MaPler which I can't recommend buying any more as even how good it is

I do not believe that rewind and fast forward work on all file types. In
particular, I am not sure they work on MP3 files, for example, or at least
not on all bit-
rates. However, it is possible that CONTROL-SHIFT-B is used by your screen
reader. For example. Window-Eyes uses it to toggle between restrictions
on the mouse pointer keys. You can get past that by using the key that
bypasses controls first. In case of Window-Eyes, pressing INSERT-B first
will
cause CONTROL-SHIFT-B to be passed through to Windows Media Player. One way
you can determine if the rewind is working is to find Rewind in
the menus. Go do Play and then to rewind. If it is not functioning, it
will say Rewind disabled. Incidentally, I have some MP3's where fast
forward

works but rewind does not.
