Subject: A Very Accessible SIP Soft Phone

 Hi all,

I set myself a project to find myself an accessible SIP soft phone that
 was
not branded to any particular service, but which was designed entirely to
connect without bias to the full range of SIP providers.

SIP stands for Session Initiation protocol, and it is the protocol behind
most voice over IP telephony systems today. If you've used the Voipbuster,
Google talk, Gizmo Project or Stanaphone client for example, or you've
 used
Vonage with a phone plugged into their box, then you've used SIP. The
 major
exception to this is Skype, which is proprietary.

A free, highly accessible soft phone is Express Talk, from
 http://nch.com.au/talk/index.html.

With this software, I am already connected to three providers from within
the client. Voipbuster, Stanaphone, and Free World Dialup. There are,
believe it or not, six lines on this phone, so you can be connected to up
 to
six providers concurrently. The software has a standard menu bar and
 buttons
which are accessible by tabbing. There are plenty of shortcut keys and a
100% accessible address book. It will also record calls to Wave format
 using
its built in recorder. With optional software, you can also play a range
 of
music or other material when calls are put on hold. There is even a free
 PBX
 package for it.

You can even sign up to the bigger providers like Broadvoice, which has an
option that allows you to purchase their plans without buying any hardware
 from them.

ExpressTalk is a really cool package which will allow you to explore the
huge range of options for VOIP calling, either PC to PC, or PC to phone,
that use this open protocol. And there are heaps of them out there. Skype
 is
of course a major player, but the principle behind this open protocol is
 an
excellent one. After all, when you email someone, you don't have to worry
about whether the recipient of your email is using the same email client
 as
you. When you phone someone, you don't have to worry about whether they
 are
on the same phone network as you. And the same should be true with VOIP.
 So
if you're interested in Skype alternatives, check this out.

 Jonathan

 Hi Chris.

Yes, when I go into Documents and Settings, I've got the following:

 Administrator.
 All Users
 Default User, and
 Owner.

However, it gets a bit more complicated than that. Prior to going into
Documents and Settings, after I've clicked on Local Disk C, I've got the
 following:

 Documents and Settings.
 Logue.
 My Downloads.
 Windows, and
 Programmes.

Logue is my second name, so I'm not sure if the account I am using is
 Logue,
 Owner or Default User.

However all the stuff in my Start Menu is only found within the
 Administrator Account.

Does any of this make sense to you? I really should not have to Log On at
boot up if I am the only user and I don't think that I need all of these
 accounts.

 What do you think?

 Best wishes.

Hi Jed:

You asked:

How many gigs does this ipod come with?
the second generation iPod shuffles typically come with one gig of flash
memory. which will give you about 250 songs give or take.

So how does this software work, do you actually install it on the ipod
 itself or what?
You install Anapod explorer on your computer, and then you use the software
to transfer songs to your iPod via simple copy and paste operations just
like you would in windows explorer. It's very easy to use. The software
has a lot of other features much too numerous to mention here. the best
thing you can do is just visit the website and read up on what it can and
can't do. and that'll answer all the questions you have, and might answer a
few you didn't know you were going to ask.

 SayPad from

allows you to denote chapters, and it runs on Sapi 5.
DSpeech I can't comment on, I haven't used it much. I use Kurzweil to do

Tim,

I think what you will need to do, is to origionally rip the CD into mp3
with your choice of a ripper, and tell the ripper to only make one mp3 of
the entire CD. Then simply put that one mp3 file in the CD layout, and
burn.

Yes, I'm careful to maximize the Goldwave window. I notice now that
insert-pagedown announces the elapsed time as the recorded file plays, but
no other information, such as the file's total duration. I wonder if I've
mistakenly made a setting that cuts short the status line.

BTW are you using Goldwave 5.xx or 4.26? There are different keyboard

I have followed their recommendations for settings and have been trying

 1. F4, the green play button, won't work unless I first press another
 key,
in this instance F6, fast forward. By contrast, shift-F4, for yellow
 play,
 works without a hitch.

 2. Pressing insert-3 for the insert line gives me no useful
 information.
JAWS says, File. Action... but no numbers. Similarly, alt-shift-d
 and
the other partial status info shortcuts don't read anything.

Note that I do have JAWS Goldwave scripts installed. I've confirmed it
 with
JAWS key-0 and also by pressing JAWS key-1, where the JAWS-scripted
keystroke functions are reported. For example, pressing alt-shift-d in
 this
mode causes JAWS to verbalize something along the lines of, says

Re: Rockbox Question

2006-12-11 Thread Chris Gilland
Well, I'd be happy to, assuming that I could figure out how to get my IPod
to come through my sound card. Right now I don't have a patch cable to use.

I'll try to come up with some way though, as I'm stubborn. I don't mind
doing a review, not at all, however, let me see how to get this audio issue
taken care a first. If I do it, I want it to be the best sound quality it
can.

On that note, how do I submit something to Main Menu.

Chris.

Re: Desporatly need help with Goldwave

2006-12-11 Thread Chris Gilland
Are you sure that you are at that point in the file when you hit the left
bracket key? In other words, if you get to the point to put your start
marker, then stop the recording with the space bar, you will return to
wherever your start marker origionally was, thus, if you hit the left
bracket at that point, you'll be dropping right where it already was.
Ideally, what you want to do, is space or f4, your preference, to start
playback. When you get to where you want to begin editting, hit f7 to
pause, then hit your left bracket to drop your start marker. Then hit the
space bar twice to resume playback. I say twice as the first time will take
you out of pause nmode and put you in a full stop mode. Once you get to the
point where the right bracket should go, hit f7 once again, to pause. now
lay your finnish marker down with the right bracket. now hit space twice to
play what is between your markers and be certained it sounds ok for what you
want to edit. If not use your shift left and shift right to move the start
marker to fine tune and your control shift left and control shift right to
move the finnish marker to fine tune. Don't forget your zoom ratio may be
too big or too small, so depending on how tight your edit needs to be, you
may possibly have to hit alt v and to to the view menuy and select a smaller
zoom ratio size. One tip is alt+v then the letter e as in echo. This will
jump you to the smallest movement zoom ratio. It will only be a frame of a
second, but if you really need it to be so pathetically tight it's
indescribable, that is one way to do it. Once done, just do your edit as
needed, like delete to crop that part out, control t to trim outside your
markers, control c to copy, control v to paste, or control p to paste print
to a new file, etc. I sincerely hope this helps but if not feel free to
call me at:

1-888-346-2666

Extention 2704

I'd be happy to help you further over the phone for a very reasonably small
nominal fee that my company charges.

forget the fee. This call will be on us.

Merry Christmas!

 you
would do is set up whatever sound recording program you have, set your

 your
text. I would also make sure that all windows sounds are turned off.

Re: Rockbox Question

2006-12-10 Thread Chris Gilland
Rockbox does work with the IPod Nano, and yes, it will speak all the menus,
well, actually, I should say 99 percent of the menus. Yes, you can most
deffinently navigate your library using it, and can ajust the settings, and
navigate your playlist, etc. It will also once installed, notice I said,
once installed, allow you to transfer tracks back and forth just using
simple windows explorer rather than having to use ITunes, or Anapod
Explorer, etc.

I'd suggest it. The installation isn't very easy, at this given time, but
if you would like to call me tomorrow, at:

1-888-346-2666

Extention: 2704

I'd be happy to talk you through it and get you up and running.

I think you'd really like it.

Hi, Vicky here. Would anyone explain what exactly Rockbox does? I have a
Nano iPod, which does not talk, but I marked it with 4 letters in braille,
so I could tell where to press. Would Rockbox merely voice these presses?
Does the Rockbox talk while the unit is connected to the computer, to help
you work with the music library and downloading songs on to your unit?
Thanks for helping me understand this. Vicky

Re: Recording Skype Calls and two Questions about Goldwave

2006-12-10 Thread Chris Gilland
Brent, is there any possible way, you could call me, and help me out with
that Virtual audio Cable thing? I've heard of it, and am incredibly anxious
to try it.

For now, you can call me at:

1-888-346-2666

Extention: 2704

Once I have you on the line, I'll give you my actual direct number, so that
it won't eat up my toll free minutes. I just don't for various reasons
which I won't go into on list, feel comfortable giving my actual house
number out publicly.

I don't mind you yourself having it, but call me at the toll free number
above and I'll give it to ya, and then we can talk about this and waht
exactly I'm trying to accomplish. You seem to be pretty savvy, so maybe
you'll have an idea.

I think Virtual Audio Cables could get the job done, all be it with 2 or 3
extra windows in the alt-tab order. Without unique identification, it'd be
real hard to shut a specific repeater down, as one would need to do if it
were a live stream, but it may not be a bad way to record.

Yeah, but, then we run into another issue. So, I switch my skype over
 to
say, my sigmatel audio, then uncheck the box to let skype ajust my
 audio.
Then in audio devices, I set it to play and record with sigmatel audio.
Then in control pannel sounds I set default recording and playback to
 my
 SB
Audigy II ZS. Then, finally I set what you hear as the record input
 through
windows volume control. Well, that's all dandy, except for one little
problem I think you all are over looking: The sound blaster now would
 only
record my speech and absolutely nothing else. The reason is because,
 the
sound blaster though set to what you hear, and though sound is being
captured through both the in and out of my sigmatel, that doesn't
 matter.
If the sound blaster itself doesn't hear it, it won't capture it. In
 other
more simple terms: since you're not using the SB Audigy in my example,
 for
the skype call then the only sound it's hearing through the what you
 hear
 is
speech and windows sounds or mp3's etc. you can't make the SB Audigy,
 atl
east not that i know a, anyway, hear audio from a totally different
 sound
device altogether. Now if you know a way around this, you let me know
 and
I'll gladly attempt it. LOL! Friendly smile. Personally, I've never
 ever
tried it, but I have heard, supposively, that Freecorder which I think
correct me someone, if I'm mistaking, is also put out by the same
 people
 who
make all the Replay products, will do just this, and I've also heard
 that
it's free. So if you're really serious about recording Skype calls, it
 may
be worth looking into. I mean Pretty Mae, and also Pamela will do it,
 but
 I
don't think either are free anymore, and plus, I've found them both to
 be
just a little bit hickuppy at places. They're not bad for what they
 are,
but... I dono... maybe I'm just too picky, but I personally didn't like
 'em,
which is kind a bad considerring at first I did and bought both of
 them.
 What a bummer. LOL!

Anyway, this is the list for discussing audio, not Skype, so I'll end
 on
that note, but, point is, I think there's a little more to it than just
setting your what you hear or having two sound devices.

Only way round that is to have Skype coming out of a separate sound
device as opposed to your software speech. For instance, in my PC, I
use the on-board sound devices microphone input and my SB Lives wave
output for Skype, I don't usually use software speech here prefering
my hardware speech as I get better performance out of computers with
 hardware speech

Hello, I have found a way of recording Skype calls with Goldwave.
 In
Skype, you need to go to Tools, Options, Sound Devices and uncheck
 the
check box that says allow Skype to adjust my sound settings. Then
 you
 can
record a skype call in What you hear in Goldwave, however when you
 have
finished the recording, you will need to recheck the box. I also
 have
 two
questions about Goldwave. I would like to know, out of interest,
 how
 you
make something sound like it is on a telephone. The reason is
 because
 when
I try myself, I get a high kind of effect when I am on 8000 hearts
 and
when it is playing it. I would like to know how you make it sound
 exactly
like a telephone. Finally, when I want a sound to loop, when it
 finishes
playing and starts again, I get a pop. I can't get that out with
 pop/click
or noise reduction. What do I do?

Re: Two Questions about Napster

2006-12-09 Thread Chris Gilland
Actually, no, not true. I consulted with Napster directly, and they said
none of the IPod products work. If they did, o, trust me, I'd be using my
IPod mini right now with it.

Re: Two Questions about Napster

2006-12-09 Thread Chris Gilland
Right, I knew that about the jaws cursor, which is what I've been doing.
Just didn't know if maybe they had a script that would jump me from the edit
combo box to type in my search, then if i tab over to the combo box for
artist, album, track, etc. set that then shift tab back, and hit enter to
start searching, now to get back up to the little browser window where I can
use my virtual cursor... I didn't know if maybe there was a script that
would jump me back there. I don't mind using the jaws cursor at all, but
it's just a little tedious. For what you can get though, it's worth it.

I thnk in the past week, I've literally gotten over 400 CD's. Granted, I
did it with the unlimited part of the subscription a corse, so, you're
talking no burning, and no taking it on the go with me, but that's fine as I
usually don't burn CD's anyway. I usually just listen on my pc anyway.

Jaws works well with Napster with no extra scripts needed. You will need
 to
use your jaws cursor in many cases.

Re: CAKEWALK PRO9

2006-12-07 Thread Chris Gilland
Yes, it works perfectly with JAWS, and no, the scripts are already included
in JAWS, but, no offense intended, why are you using Cakewalk Pro Audio,
that is somewhat old. They're now up to Sonar Producer Edition. If it's
due to pricing, I can certainly understand, as Sonar is quite a bit more
expensive from what I've been told. It's worth it though.

I don't know where you could find Cakewalk Pro 9. The program is now
called Sonar and we're up to Sonar version 6. Sonar works fairly well
 with
Window Eyes out of the box. There are free and $200 JAWS scripts
 available.
The $200 scripts offer great access as well as Sonar tutorial. There are
lots of blind people using Sonar.

Question about Olympus DS2

2006-11-15 Thread Chris Gilland
Hey guys. I just this month got an Olympus DS2 Digital voice recorder. I
love it, and just about have most of the menus I'd ever need to know
memorized by heart, however, maybe I misheard this, but is there a 3rd party
software that I could install to make the menus speak? It seems like I
remember hearing something somewhere about this. No, i am not referring to
Rockbox, I already know about that. That isn't what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

Chris.

Well, again, i think this guy wants to use his onboard sound for speech and
his actual sound card for all other audio related tasks, which actually does
make perfect sinse.

I could be wrong but I don't think that is a good idea.

If you go to the options menu and press enter on preferences, you will be
presented with a multi tab dialog.

The audio tab in that dialog is where one can change the playback and
 record
 devices.

Unless there is some compelling reason to use anything other than the
preferred audio device, the playback and record devices should be left as
the Microsoft wave mapper which is, in effect, the preferred audio device
 as
determined in the control panel of Windows.

I have been using an external Audigy ZS2 for quite some time with the
playback and record devices set to Microsoft wave mapper and Sound Forge
 work flawlessly.

Note that when control r is used to bring up the record dialog, the record
device is displayed. The setting is taken from the preferences settings.
Again, unless there is some compelling reason to do so, it should be left
 as
 microsoft wave mapper.

 Hope this helps,

 Robert Nelson

the record window remains and I see no sign of any recording being done.

Re: Media Player 11?

Does anyone know how to burn CD's with Windows Media Player? i mean, audio
CD's of corse? I have an issue where for some very weird really bazaar
reason Nero will not properly install on my laptop. Granted, I have it on
the desktop, but, I don't want to be bogged down to my desktop, just to burn
a CD, and I can't exactly find out how to get WinAmp Pro to burn. Yeah, I
added the files to the playlist, and then right clicked and went to send to,
and told it to send to my CD drive, but that didn't exactly work. It then
just kind a sat there and did absolutely nothing. I do have Sonic Record
Now, but, I really don't wanna put that on, if I can figure out with Media
player, or WinAmp, preferably Media Player how to correct burn. I'm using
Media Player 10. Please if anyone can help me out, it would be very most
greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-11 Thread Chris Gilland
i was always under the impression that JAWS already had scripts built in to
it for SoundForge, but maybe that was for a different version. I am more a
GoldWave guy, although I certainly have used SF, and love it. The only
reason that I don't use it, is because for me, it was a bit too pricy for my
budget, but yet GoldWave is only 44 U.S. dollars which in my opinion, for
what all you get and what all it does is phenomenelly reasonable.

I think both players have their plusses, and minuses, but, anyway... I don't
anna get off topic of this thread, so I won't comment on that right at this
given time.

Question about editting in Adobe Audition 1.5

2006-11-11 Thread Chris Gilland
I have the scripts for Adobe Audition, and am trying to figure out in the
waveform view of Audition how to go about editting. I know about setting my
start and finnish markers with left and right bracket, then I can add
effects, or hit the delete key to crop, etc, however, how do I actually move
the markers around once they are dropped. Is it the same as in GoldWave,
shift left and right for the beginning and control shift left and right for
the end? Lastly, I am trying to record an arrangement of me playing and
singing the Christmas song Away in a Manger. What i wanna do, is have the
first verse, have no music behind it. I've already recorded the
instrumentation file that will be accompinying me, But, If I insert it into
track one, remember, that I want the first verse to be just me singing with
no backing. Is there an easy way to do this as I've found that if I record
on say, track one, my first verse then in the multi-track view, I hit
control+shift+end, to go to the end of that, then go to track two and insert
the music track, the minute i hit control+space to start recording there at
the end, I find that my vocal track of the first verse collides with the
beginning of the music track. Basicly the effect i am trying to get is:

The Little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay, 2, 3, 1, 2, the then the music
come in, on the word cattle.

If anyone knows how to do this, let me know. O, sure, I deffinently could
fix it and edit it with GoldWave to sound correct, but that seems a little
unnecessary, I would think that Audition *should* offer a way to do this.

Again, as I said, I am in deed using the scripts.

Thanks.

Chris.

Re: Question about editting in Adobe Audition 1.5

2006-11-11 Thread Chris Gilland
I tried pasting and that for some reason doesn't seem to work. As for cross
fading, I bet that would work, but i'm not exactly sure in audition how to
do that.

Subject: Question about editting in Adobe Audition 1.5

I have the scripts for Adobe Audition, and am trying to figure out in the
waveform view of Audition how to go about editting. I know about setting
 my
start and finnish markers with left and right bracket, then I can add
effects, or hit the delete key to crop, etc, however, how do I actually
 move
the markers around once they are dropped. Is it the same as in GoldWave,
shift left and right for the beginning and control shift left and right
 for
the end? Lastly, I am trying to record an arrangement of me playing and
singing the Christmas song Away in a Manger. What i wanna do, is have
 the
first verse, have no music behind it. I've already recorded the
instrumentation file that will be accompinying me, But, If I insert it
 into
track one, remember, that I want the first verse to be just me singing
 with
no backing. Is there an easy way to do this as I've found that if I
 record
on say, track one, my first verse then in the multi-track view, I hit
control+shift+end, to go to the end of that, then go to track two and
 insert
the music track, the minute i hit control+space to start recording there
 at
the end, I find that my vocal track of the first verse collides with the
beginning of the music track. Basicly the effect i am trying to get is:

The Little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay, 2, 3, 1, 2, the then the music
come in, on the word cattle.

 Hey Chris,
I am using WinAmp pro to burn, and I'm not having any troubles, I am using
the scripts though (which I'm sure you know, makes it quite a bit easier).
I downloaded the scripts from the jfw lite site, they're for versions jaws
 5
6 but, they made it much much easier for me.
I am using WinAmp pro version 5.31.
 Hope this helps,
 Jeremy

the problem I'm having without scripts is finding where the record button
 is.pressing control+` or alt+r doesn't seem to be working. or I'm not
finding on screen anything that shows me that recording has started. if
 you
can give me a hint or two it would be appreciated.

i was always under the impression that JAWS already had scripts built in
 to
it for SoundForge, but maybe that was for a different version. I am more
 a
GoldWave guy, although I certainly have used SF, and love it. The only
reason that I don't use it, is because for me, it was a bit too pricy for
 my
budget, but yet GoldWave is only 44 U.S. dollars which in my opinion, for
what all you get and what all it does is phenomenelly reasonable.

I think both players have their plusses, and minuses, but, anyway... I
 don't
anna get off topic of this thread, so I won't comment on that right at
 this
 given time.

If they're mpeg you won't need to convert them, just use Nero or something

Actually, I think that avi should work with nero as far as making a VCD. Is
there any reason that you need them as mpeg?
