Re: A midi question

2006-01-23 Thread Ian Wells
Well now, I don't think its the MIDI player itself that is the
quality issue as the MIDI player as far as I'm aware only directs the
MIDI data to the sound device or MIDI synthesizer of your
pre-determined choice, the output device to which your MIDI play is set to etc.

Its been a while since I've played with MIDI files but I reckon the
best synth I've ever heard for MIDI stuff has been the Roland Sound
Canvas hardware version, not the software version. Software synths?
Well, they're ok as far as they go but once again, you're relying on
your computers CPU to do all the work and I'm one of those who like
to have my computer with as many resources available for my use at
any one time which increases performance etc and things such as
software speech and synthesis only over burden allot of systems.

Re: ipodder problems

2006-01-22 Thread Ian Wells
Well, I got it to work, you first need to register and then you need
to search for the book you wish to subscribe to. Once you've found
the book you want, click on the subscribe link and its added to your
subscribed book list, you can then copy your personal subscriptions
link into Juice and it will be downloaded as a podcast or series of
podcasts, works here.

Re: alternative to real player

2005-12-14 Thread Ian Wells
well of course, I don't have that problem as I
don't use software speech and I certainly
wouldn't recommend anyone else use it either if
they can avoid it, you just don't have any idea
how much the performance of a computer system is
increased without that but each to their own of course.

Of course, the other way around the problem I've
just realised is to change your default sound
device from the Windows control panel and then
change it back again when you've finished.

Shame realy as their are some very very nice sounding Real streams out there.

Also does well with music if you use the Limit at 6DB and maximise
preset, that one is particularly great for broadcasting, have used it here.

Re: Wav Hammer in SF

2005-12-10 Thread Ian Wells
Well, fiddle with the presets and you can hear some of the functions
the Wave Hammer is capable of and here's how you can achieve this.

First, open an audio file.

Next go into Wave Hammer and press the Preview button, you'll hear
your file being played in real time, now go up and down the preset
combo box, you'll find various presets for limiting and compressing
audio and of course, you can set your own preferences for what you
want but again, I'm found more accessible solutions other than the
Wave Hammer that comes with Sound Forge and I've documented them on this list.

Re: ACCESSIBLE DIREX PLUG-INS

2005-12-08 Thread Ian Wells
Also be aware that when installing these plug-ins you will have to
enter your serial number manually that is to say you'll have to write
it down first and enter it from your written soruce rather than say
pasting it from notepad or whatever, this installation seems to take
up all the screen and other programmes don't seem to display corectly
or aren't fully able to be viewed with a screen Reader so keep that in mind.

Re: DVD RECORDER, I DON'T THINK ITS PRACTICAL

2005-12-04 Thread Ian Wells
Well now, I suppose the term "expensive" depends on how you look at
the machine, if its from a point of view of accessability only then
yes, it is a bit expensive however if its from the point of view of a
very good quality hard drive recorder which has good specs then
perhaps its not too expensive but as I said, for most general
applications, it seems to me that most people would be better of
purchasing a computer with accessible TV tuner card etc as I said previously.

DVD RECORDER, I DON'T THINK ITS PRACTICAL

2005-12-04 Thread Ian Wells
Okay, well I've just started playing with this beast and I'll write
what I've found thus far.

Now it appears that one can only access the hard drive through the
Ethernet port meaning that one can only manipulate files, change
titles, change playlists, change chapter titles etc and it would
appear that we were wrong as their doesn't seem to be a way to access
menus or other functions through the Ethernet connection although how
accessible the functions are through the conventional front buttons
or remote controller are yet to be seen, I'll keep testing.

Another factor that should be considered, even supposing everything
was accessible through the Ethernet port, would you really be willing
to pay over $3,000.00 Australian for one of these machines when the
cheaper and more accessible alternative would be to purchase another
computer with a couple of big hard drives, a good DVD R-W drive such
as a Pioneer DVR-110 screen reader and accessible TV tuner card?

Re: remote tabCDEX question

2005-12-03 Thread Ian Wells
Firstly, CDEX doesn't use CDDB any longer, it uses FREEDB which
requires an email address, yo ucan use anything here if you like say
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you so desire.

Winamp uses CDDB which is now called Gracenote, this service licences
itself out to software developers and company's and is more accurate
than is FREEDB due to the fact that entries made are checked whereas
with FREEDB they're not and you can get some very strange results
from fREEDB sometimes.

What version of Window-Eyes are you using? Apparently in WE 5.5, some

I also found that the most recent version of

Re: Umax Chilly

2005-12-01 Thread Ian Wells
Well, I can't answer the question about that particular model but
have you looked at say the Ipod shuffle? I have one here and I have
no trouble using it and you can get it in two sizes, 512 meg and 1 GB.

Re: NEW PANASONIC VIDEO RECORDER

2005-12-01 Thread Ian Wells
Right! I'll see what I can do but the first thing I need to warn you
all is that we're talking about a high-end model of recorder and it
ain't the cheapest thing on 2 legs, you only have to look at the
information provided for the model at the Panasonic web site to
realise that we're talking about a Rolls Royce in domestic hard drive
recorder here.

I don't know about the latest version which I think is 5.09 but 5.08
shouldn't have any trouble.

NEW PANASONIC VIDEO RECORDER

2005-12-01 Thread Ian Wells
Hello all!

A friend of mine has just told me about a new Panasonic video hard
drive recorder that's just come out, it has an Ethernet connection
which allows it to be networked to a computer or other video
recorder, a 400 gig hard drive and can record multi formats such as
MP3 etc, the built-in DVD drive will also record. My friend works at
Panasonic and may be able to get a unit for me to try, would any list
members be interested in my findings?

As yet, I haven't been able to study the manual but I'm told that the
recorder features a html interface similar to those found on say the
Linksys Wireless Gateways or Hp fax devices, this interface allows
the user to edit chapter titles, playlists of recorded material and
I'm told, set menus and functions of the recorder itself and its this
last point that I'm personally very excited about for if it is indeed
true, then it means that the unit will be accessible and we can
bypass the displayed menus on the TV screen etc, not to mention
getting the full functionality that connecting a video recorder to a
comptuer can provide.

Re: What Is The Quickest Way To Make A Voice File?

2005-11-30 Thread Ian Wells
Right! well you could try the Windows Sound Recorder and I think its
found in the Entertainment options under Accessaries in the
Programmes group, sorry I cannot be more specific as its been a while
since I've used that tool.

SOUND DEVICES FOR A MAC MINI

2005-11-28 Thread Ian Wells
Hello all!

Just wondering if anyone knows of some good sound devices to use with
a Mac Mini computer.

The Mini has a built-in sound device which is fine for most
situations but this device doesn't have a line-in socket so I'm going
to have to use either a USB or Firewire type, any suggestions?

Thanks
