Re: help with an audio problem

2015-01-10 Thread Jeff Samco
So, let me see if I understand the situation. The 3.5mm jack on the
back of the TV is the ONLY means of getting audio out from the TV.
And, that jack is the only audio out that will also carry content
from the satellite and DVD player. And, if something is plugged into
that jack then the TV speakers are silenced. Is this right?

So, I guess you have to use that single jack for both purposes. Then
the only way for your dad to listen using bluetooth headphones and
others to listen at the same time by speakers is to split the audio
signal coming out from that jack. Here's a couple options as I see them:
1. Use a simple headphone splitter making 2 3.5mm audio jacks. One
can be used for his bluetooth headphones transmitter and the other
can go to a powered speaker using a patch cord or a second bluetooth
transmitter and using a bluetooth speaker.
2. Or, you could use that jack to connect audio into a small
amplifier. Then you could connect both the bluetooth headphones and
any speaker system you care to use.

Jeff

Hi

according to the tv manual they are only for receiving audio
and not transmitting audio. We have tried using them but the
sound from the tv doesn't come through the audio part of the
5 set of phono connections. According to the manual you have
to use a pair of two plugs plus a set of 3 but they are not
audio out. If we plug the headphones in the rear of the
satellite box, the headphones work perfectly but he cannot
get the sound from the dvd through the satellite, only
through the tv. The dvd doesn't have a scart connection on
it, only hdmi. The satellite doesn't have a hdmi connection
only scart and one pair of phono connectors. We have looked
at hdmi to scart converters, they are very expensive. On my
own tv setup I have the tv and dvd connected to the
satellite and I am able to hear everything through my
surround system. According to the questions and answers
concerning the particular headphones the senheizer rs170,
you can get a special adapter that creates another 3.5 ml
connection on the rear of the tv but I know little about
this kind of thing. Dad doesn't want to have to keep
unplugging the headphones from the tv, plus if we all want
to listen to the tv, it won't be possible without several
sets of headphones, what is the best way around this please?
Dad is insisting on using the phono connections. Help!!

Re: Best Bluetooth speaker

2014-12-28 Thread Jeff Samco
I have recently purchased the Creative Roar bluetooth speaker from
Amazon for $150. Although I have only heard the small JamBox this
Creative speaker is far better, as it should be for being much
larger. Don't know how it compares with a Bose SoundLink 3 or large JamBox.

The Roar is about 10 inches wide, 7 inches deep and 2 inches high. It
has an extremely solid feel and lots of weight, likely due to the 6
amp battery in it. It has 2 different amplifiers: one to drive the
base speaker, and one to drive the 2 other speakers for mids and
highs. The sound is extremely balanced throughout the range. There's
a "roar" button that boosts the sound to more fully fill a room.
Volume goes quite loud with no distortion.

There are lots of reviews on Amazon. Admittedly, a significant number
of the reviews seem over the top in their praise. But, in my personal
listening I find the speaker extremely good for the price.

Jeff

also it also speaks some things when you move switches on the back but not

overall it's a really nice speaker with great sound and lots of functions.
and at £99 it's a good deal, and also when you order it on the creative

shoulder straps for half price so if you want it don't add it to your
basket until you go to the basket otherwise you will get charged the full

I'm catching up with PC Audio messages a little late. I see Pete has a
SoundBlaster Roar wireless speaker. I've been looking at this off and on
for
a while now but have held back because I've never been sure whether the
controls are accessible to someone who is totally blind. This especially as
it has a lot of features which could potentially make it quite complicated
to operate.

Anyway, two things coincided. I just read Pete's post about the Roar and
Creative have just (possibly temporarily) dropped the price to £99. I'm
just
wondering if Pete has had any issues with the controls as I know it has a
lot of selectable options? I've got the Boes Soundlink Mini which is good
but sometimes a little too bassy. And I had hoped too sometimes use the
Mini
via Bluetooth with Jaws from my PC but found that the Mini kind of cuts off
the beginning of Jaws audio unless it is getting continuous sound. Anyway,
I'm really interested in the versatility of the Ror and it's currently a
great price.

Thanks for any info.

hi mary,

i've got two new bluetooth speakers a week ago both of which are fine one
is
outstanding but costs more and the other has three diferent versions each
one stepping up in size.
both of these have built in speech that tells you when it's pairing and
when
connected and the cheaper one even speaks what battery power is left.
there both made by creative, the dearer one:
sound blaster roar
has outstanding sound with 30 watts output from a unit that is roughly the
size of an A5 sheet of paper and 2 inches tall.
it has bass boost, the ability to expand the sound field, has a micro sd
card slot it's own built in music player and works as a speaker phone.
if you have an sd card inserted you can either play music that is on it,
press a record button to record memos or lectures and such like or if you
are on a phone call via bluetooth to the speaker a press of the record
button will even record your conversation which you can play back using the
buttons on the speaker.
it also has up to date codex built in so it can play uncompressed audio via
bluetooth or via the 3.5 aux in socket, it even has an alarm switch that
when activated a press of a button makes it work as a siron.
it works from both the mains or from the built in battery.
in UK pounds it cost £129 but i don't think it's much more in dollars
in the states.
the second is the:
creative muvo mini.
which i think is also known as the muvo 10.
this is about 7 inches long and 2 inches tall and deep.
it has a rubber coating and is suitable for use in bathrooms, on the beech
and anywhere outdoors even in light rain or where it will get splashed.
it's not as powerful as the roar but still has reasonable sound and works
as
a speaker phone.
this one cost £50 UK pounds.creative do another couple of models of the
muvo
with the rubber coating with each one being bigger and more powerful and i
think they are called the muvo 20 and muvo 30.

I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with
portable bluetooth capable devices. For reasons not particularly relevant
to
this list, I won't have access to that speaker during the school year,
since
it will be going to school with my spouse. So I'm wondering about other

there are Braven models which look interesting, albeit not much less costly
than the Bose.

Since all my devices are ios, I could also use airplay, not necessary to

Re: Using Gain In MP3 Direct Cut

2013-06-18 Thread Jeff Samco

Tom,

These are my steps for increasing or decreasing the gain throughout a file.
First, I do Ctrl-A to select the entire file, which is the same as
Rich did with marking the beginning and end of the file.

Use Ctrl-G to bring up the Gain menu.
You are now on a scroll bar for setting the gain level for the start
of the file. By default you're on 32 of 90; I usually lower the
number to something like 28 or 25 to moderately increase the gain.
Tab to the next scroll bar which sets the gain for the end of the
file. Set the same number for this if you want an even increase
across the entire file.

Press O to close the gain menu.

Re: Several questions regarding manipulating a file in mp3 Direct Cut

2013-05-31 Thread Jeff Samco

Hi, Tom,

I'll take a stab at what you might do different.

Control-P brings up the edit box with the time info in it.
The first number is the total length of the file shown in minutes,
seconds and fractions of a second. Hours would be shown if necessary.
The second number is the current position also listed in minutes,
seconds and fractions of seconds.
It is the current time that you need to edit. Be careful not to
remove the punctuation marks like apostrophe which delineate the
minutes from second, etc.

After editing, press Enter to jump to the new time location.

Hi, Kevin,

I wrote up these instructions for using MP3 DirectCut a year or
more ago. I think it will answer most if not all of your questions.
If something isn't answered, just email me about it.

HTH,
Jeff

MP3 Direct Cut is a free direct mp3 editor, splitter, cutter and recorder.
Download it from
http://www.mpesch3.de

Here are some notes for keyboard shortcuts for basic operation of
this program:

Play and Stop by using the SpaceBar.
During playback, the F8 key will increase playback speed and F7
will decrease it.

Rewind and fast forward using cursor left and right or page-up and page-down.
The latter two keys move in larger increments than the first two.
The number of frames each pair moves can be set via the configuration menu.

The Home key moves to the beginning of the file.
The End key moves to the end.

One can move to a specific location in a file by time.
Use Ctrl-P to bring up an editable text box showing the total time
of the file and the current time location.

Edit the current time location to where you wish to move, then press Enter.

How to mark beginning and end points of a selection for deletion,
saving as a separte file, etc:

While playback is stopped,
Use the letter b to mark the beginning of a selection
Use the letter n to mark the end of a selection

When beginning and end points are set, use the Up-arrow and
Down-arrow keys to jumpt to each respectively.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys,
not the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard.
These commands move by frame. One frame is roughly a 38th of a second:
1: Move the beginning mark of a selection one frame to the left
2: Move the beginning mark of a selection one frame to the right
3: Move the end mark of a selection one frame to the left
4: Move the end mark of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of
a selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the beginning mark of a selection
F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection
F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection
F8: Plays the two seconds after the end mark of a selection
F9: Plays a portion of the file around the selection as if the
selection had been deleted

To remove a selection one can press the delete key.
This does not touch the MP3 file.
It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index.
Therefore, deletes and cuts are made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection
into a different file.
For instance, Ctrl-E will save the selection with the opportunity
to choose its own filename.
and Ctrl-W will save the entire audio using the current name or
edit it to something different.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can
use the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.
It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually
selections with a length of zero.
To check the markers, one can go from one to the other with
Control cursor right and Control cursor left.

The file can then be split according to the markers.
Or one can save a cue sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file.
Both would contain the markers.
With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions in
an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position within the audio file, use Control-p.
The displayed edit box is a bit odd.

Does MP3DirectCut work with Windows 7 and 8?

2012-12-15 Thread Jeff Samco

Hello, list,

I've used MP3DirectCut for years on my XP machine. Soon I'll need to
get a new laptop with either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Does
MP3DirectCut work with both? If so, does it work equally well on
either or are there precautions I need to consider?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Chris,

I read somewhere that this is possible with MP3Direct Cut using
cut/copy and paste, but I didn't get it to work for me. I use an
older version, I think 1.31, which has a much cleaner and simpler way
of doing it. Hopefully you can find an old version still with this feature.

The Ultra is better than the plus but you're going to pay a little

The Expressionist Plus are quite reasonably priced given what they do.

To remove a selection one can press the delete key.
This does not touch the MP3 file.
It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index.
Therefore, cuts are made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection

For instance, Ctrl-E will save the selection with the opportunity to

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

To check the markers, one can go from one to the other with Control
cursor right and Control cursor left.

The file can then be split according to the markers.
Or one can save a cue sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file.
Both would contain the markers.

Re: Problem With MP3 Direct Cut Not Taking Me To Correct Folder

2011-08-23 Thread Jeff Samco
You're halfway there, Tom. After doing Ctrl-O and a shift tab, yes,
you're in your last used folder. Shift tab 2 more times to a list of
folders. It never seemed to be in any order I could figure out. I do
a left or right arrow to then enable me to up arrow in the list. You
will likely find a folder at a higher level than the one you wish to
go to to locate your MP3 file to edit. Leave that higher level folder
selected in that list. Now tab twice to the list which will show all
the folders and files under the higher level folder you just
selected. If you need to go to deeper levels of folders, just select
the next folder you need to open and press Enter. You can keep doing
this until you reach the folder with the file you need to edit.

Jeff

Re: MP3 Direct Cut Question

2011-07-15 Thread Jeff Samco

Hi, Tom,

Yes you can easily do this.
Find the beginning point of the section you wish to save,
press the space bar to stop playback, press the letter B.
Then find the end point,
stop playback and press N.
At this point, you can fine tune the location of the beginning point
by pressing the numbers 1 and 2 respectively for moving this point
forward or backward.

Move the end point with 3 and 4 respectively.
These are the numbers on the top row of the keyboard and not the number pad.
You can listen to the audio around these two points,
use the F5 and F6keys to hear the few seconds of audio prior to and
following the beginning point,

and F7 and F8 to hear audio before and after the end point.
When your satisfied with these locations, press Ctrl-E to save this section.
You can edit the original filename to whatever you want it to be.
HTH,
Jeff

Subject: Windows XP and using a bluetooth headset

I recently purchased an Arctic P311 blutooth headset. It is my
first experience with any bluetooth device. I easily and
successfully got it going with my iPhone. But it's a different
story with my Windows XP laptop.

I'm using the laptop's built-in bluetooth capability. I wanted to
use the headset on the laptop for going completely silent with
hearing my screen reader, etc. However, after a bit of fussing, it
looks like I can only use the headphones to hear audio generated by
a media player on the laptop. I hear that audio through the headset
but the screen reader through the laptop speakers.

Can I change something so I can hear all audio through the headset?
Or, do I need to get a bluetooth dongle to broadcast all the
laptop's audio? Please clarify this issue for me.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Podcast feed

There's a good podcast client called Juice. It is free and you should

Juice originally went by the name iPodder. I recall that Blind Cool

Re: where to find MP3 Direct Cut tutorial

2010-10-31 Thread Jeff Samco
Which type of tutorial are you looking for? I have the MP3 audio
tutorial files. I can email them to you if you wish and if they make
it through any attachment barriers. I also have two different sets of
text instructions. One came off the internet and the other I have
worked up. I will paste both of them after my name below.

HTH,
Jeff

MP3 Direct Cut is a free direct mp3 editor, splitter, cutter and recorder.
Download it from
http://www.mpesch3.de

Some brief notes regarding keyboard shortcuts for this program are as follows:

Play and Stop by using the SpaceBar.
During playback, the F8 key will increase playback speed and F7 will
decrease it.

Rewind and fast forward using cursor left and right or page-up and page-down.
The latter two keys move in larger increments than the first two.
The number of frames each pair moves can be set via the menu system.

Marking a selection for deletion, saving as a separte file, etc:
Use the letter b to mark the beginning of a selection
Use the letter n to mark the end of a selection
NotePlayback must be stopped when marking the beginning and end of a
selection by using the Spacebar.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys,
not the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard.
These commands move by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:
1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left
2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right
3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left
4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a
selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection
F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection
F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection
F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection
F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key.
This does not touch the MP3 file.
It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index.
Therefore, cuts can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection
into a different file.

For instance, Ctrl-E will save the selection with its own filename.
and Ctrl-W will save the entire audio using the current name or edit
it to something different.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use
the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.
It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually
selections with a length of zero.
To check the markers, one can go from one to the other with Control
cursor right and Control cursor left.

The file can then be split according to the markers.
Or one can save a cue sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file.
Both would contain the markers.
With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit
box is a bit strange.
Don't delete the words in it, just modify the numbers for the
current file position.
One has to leave alone the apostrophes, which separate hours minutes
and seconds.

The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts.
r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the
recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open
s: Stops the recording.

My personal set of Notes.

Page Up to move back or page down to go forward in fairly large time
increments.

Use left and right arrows to move in smaller increments.
Space bar to begin and stop playback.
Ctrl F4 to close a window within MP3 Direct Cut.

Recording
Consider muting Window Eyes.
Press R to open recording screen.
Press P to begin and S to stop.
If Append is checked in the configuration window, stopping and
restarting recording will continue in the same file thus acting as a
pause function.

Marking beginning & end of selection.
Press B for beginning or N for end while playback is stopped.
1 and 2 will adjust begin point B backward or forward.
3 and 4 will adjust end point N backward or forward.
These commands move by frame and are quite precise.

To listen to where the B and N marks are, use f5 and f6 to hear
before and after point B; and use f7 and f8 to hear before and after point N.
Use F9 to hear what the audio would be like if you were to delete the
currently selected segment of audio.

To append a file you must be using the older version 1.39:
Open the file to be appended to the end of another file,
Open File Menu and select Append To.
Press Shift Tab to locate file to append it to.
When desired file is found, just press Enter and it is done.
Then close this window with Ctrl F4.

press Control+A to select all, and then I believe the keystroke is
Control+D. This should open up a dialog box like a Windows explorer
window to allow selection of the file

Re: MP3DirectCut tutorial

2010-07-03 Thread Jeff Samco
Below are notes I have gleaned from others and my own trial and error
learning with MP3 DirectCut.
There were some podcasts produced a number of years ago which are
good but a bit dated now. The podcast feed is

http://feeds.feedburner.com/RobsPlace

If I recall correctly, the biggest difference is how MP3 DirectCut
used to have a simple append feature up til and including version
1.51. I keep that version around just for the times I need to append
quickly and simply.

HTH,
Jeff

Re: If it's stealing, then please explain...

2010-04-19 Thread Jeff Samco
One big difference with passing around a print book compared to a
digital file...
One cannot read the book once it's in someone else's hands. Copying a
digital file and passing it on gives all new recipients the
opportunity to listen all at the same time. The real comparable would
be to delete your copy of a digital file when you pass along a copy.

insist they're all taking a drastic nose dive the likes of which haven't
been seen since the Titanic sank.

Additionally, explain this to me. If getting your hands on a copy of a book,
CD or movie you haven't paid for is so illegal/immoral/otherwise a sin on
the same level as breaking into a store and taking something, why is the
exchanging/giving away/otherwise distributing of actual, hard copy books
still so popular? It's far from uncommon for avid book readers to read
something, then pass it on to someone else to read, who will then pass it on
to someone else while at the same time passing something they'd just
finished reading back the other way. That's not considered illegal, and has
been going on arguably since the invention of books. But yet, the same copy
of that book is being passed from one hand to another. It hasn't been paid
for by these other people. It hasn't resulted in any compensation whatsoever
to the author from these other people for the privelege of reading that
book. And no one's thrown a fit over billions upon billions of lost sales
dollars because each and every one of those people who dared crack that book
didn't pony up the money for their own copy before doing so. Why is that so
different from the digital era, in spite of the fact the only real change is
now if someone else wants to read that book, the original buyer doesn't have
to give up their copy? I'd really appreciate hearing the explanation for
that from some of these folks who seem to be under the impression we've all
joined the rip off the author/musician/actor bandwagon here. Anyone?

Re: Bookpo9rt Plus and Plextalk PTR2

2010-03-22 Thread Jeff Samco
I don't know about the Book Port 2, but the PlexTalk Pocket has no
timer to start recording. However, it does have a recording setting
that keeps recording in "pause" until sound is "heard." So, if you
have a way to set the TV to come on a particular channel at a
particular time then the Pocket will start recording at that time
with this setting.

Jeff

Okay well that being the case then the person who told me that her

given that my Plextalk PTX1 uses SD cards.

feature would be handy for elderly people who could use these type of

manager for basic information, The Victor Reader for example uses LINUX
as its operating system so there's no question about the power the player

has, its just a question of how to design such a system I outlined.

Hi!

Okay, I don't have a Book Sense but I do have a Victor reader Stream.

One thing I like about the Stream is that all prompts and messages are
recorded in human voice rather than having to rely on a software voice
synthesiser so you won't miss any alerts, prompts or errors which
Victor is trying to communicate to you.

I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor
coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your
recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to
a PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major gripe

about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a Mac
most of the time and there's no way of converting files from the
Victor's format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix the

problem.

The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its
incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested
to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only
hope that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're
prepared to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be
solved by purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the
manual first so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how to

arrange things etc.

Why do you say that about unprotected wma support? The Stream has
had that
for quite some time.

Re: CD E X tutorial?

2009-08-11 Thread Jeff Samco

Here's a tutorial I have used over the years.

***
CD EX - from How to Corner
http://www.blind-corners.com/CDex.htm

CD ex Version 1.51
This is a great little program that can do several things, plus, it
is very easy
to use. Another good plus to this program is that you need no scripts
or anything

to make it work with Jaws for Windows.

You can use the program to:
rip music files from a CD,
convert existing sound files to MP3 files, and
record audio from an external device through your line in jack on the
back of your system.
You will find step by step instructions on how to do all of the
following, plus how to set the program
up after installing it below. If you haven't yet downloaded the
program and installed

it on your system, then just hit enter on the following link to download
Cdex 1.51
http://www.blind-corners.com/cdex151.exe/

*How to for Cdex 1.51

Contents
Setting up the program for the first time
Selecting a bit rate for ripping
Creating a file format for ripping
Ripping music files from a CD
Selecting multi files from a CD
Selecting all files from a CD
Converting wav files to MP3 or MP3 files to Wav
Recording from a external device

*Setting up the program for the first time
There are a few settings that must be set once the program is
installed. Follow these

steps to set the program up and get it ready to use.
1. Start the program and hit F4 to open the Cdex configuration dialog box.
2. By default you are on the encoder tab.
Use Control tab until you hear, remote CDDB tab.
3. Tab once and you should hear, your email address: edit. Enter your
email address.
4. Tab about four times until you hear, auto connect to remote CDDB
checkbox not checked.

Hit the space bar to check the checkbox.
5. Now control tab until you hear, file names tab.
6. You should be automatically put in the file name format edit box.
This is where you can choose how your file name is created using
things like artist name, album
name, track number and etc. If you plan on ripping Music from a CD,
then this is
where you tell Cdex how you want your file names created. Below is
what each %Number
stands for and some examples. You can either leave it the way it is
with the default setting,

use one of the examples, or create your own.
Here is what each %Number stands for:
%1, artist name
%2, Album name
%3, track #
%4, track name (song title)
%5, CD volume ID
%6, CDDB ID
%7, track # leading 0
%8, total # of tracks
%Y, album year
%G, genre
\ (back slash), can be used to specify folder directories
Some Examples using the above items:
%1\%2\%7-%4 (default),
creates the following output, Artist folder\Album folder\track#
starting with 0-track name.wav or MP3.
%1\%2\%4 creates the following output, Artist folder\Album
folder\Track name.wav or MP3.
%1-%2-%3 creates the following output file name, Artist name-Album
name-track #.wav or MP3.
%1\%1-%4 creates the following output, artist folder\Artist
name-track name.wav or MP3.

7. Tab two times and you will be in an edit box with a directory.
This is the directory where your wav and MP3 files will be saved.
To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it
will bring up a computer tree view.
Use your up and down arrows to navigate the tree view, and the right
and left arrows to open folders.
Once you are where you want wav files to be saved, tab to the okay
button and hit enter.
8. Tab one time and you will be in an edit box that displays the
directory where recorded files will be saved.
To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it
will bring up a computer tree view

so you can select where you want recorded files to be saved.
Once you have chosen the directory, just tab to the okay button and hit enter.
9. Your done setting up the program. Just tab to the OK button and hit enter.

*Selecting a bit rate for ripping
The bit rate is the quality at which you will rip the songs from the CD.
The default bit rate is 128, but you can select any bit rate between
32 kbs and 320

kbs.
For ripping audio tracks from a CD, I would recommend 128 kbs or above.
Most people use anywhere from 128 kbs to 192 kbs.
To change the bit rate for ripping, do the following:
1. Open the CDex program.
2. Hit f4 to bring up the configuration dialog box.
3. You should land in the encoder page, but if not hit control tab
until you are in the encoder page.

4. Tab four to five times until you hear, bit rate combo box 128 kbs.
5. Now you can arrow up and down to change the bit rate to whatever you like.
6. Tab to the OK button and hit the space bar. Your done!

* Creating a file format for ripping
This is where you can choose how your file name is created using
things like artist name, album name, track number and etc.
If you plan on ripping Music from a CD, then this is where you tell
Cdex how you want your file names created.

Below is what each %Number stands for and some examples.
You can either leave it the way it is with the default setting, use

It just shows up as a x-FI card in device manager. You can go to the
Creative support site and have it detect your card. It will then tell you
what model it is.

Hello,

Does anyone know how to determine the version of a Sound Blaster X-FI card
that is installed on a machine? When I look in Device Manager, what shows
up is just X-FI. I'm trying to determine if the card is just an X-FI card
or an X-FI Titanium. If anyone has the X-FI Titanium can you tell me what
it shows up as in Device Manager?

Re: Simple Sound Editing Program that's easy to use

2009-04-13 Thread Jeff Samco

Hi, Jim,

This is easily done with MP3 Direct Cut.

1. Open the program.
2. type Ctrl-o to open an MP3 file to edit.
3. Shift-Tab to get into a standard Windows file browsing and open
dialogue box. Locate the file you want and press enter.

4. Press the spacebar to toggle playback on and off.
5. Use the right and left arrows to move ahead or back in small
increments; or use page-up and page-down for larger increments.
6. When you are at the starting point of the section to remove, stop
playback and press the B key.
7. Resume playback until you reach the end point of the section to
remove, stop playback and press the letter N.
8. Now you can finely adjust the start and end points in this way.
Use the F1 and F2 keys to move the start point back or ahead in very
small increments, like 1 32nd of a second. The F3 and F4 will do this
for the end point.
9. Use the F5 and F6 keys to review the audio just prior and
following the start point; likewise use F7 and F8 to review the audio
just prior and following the end point.
You can use the F9 key to listen to what the audio will sound like if
the selected audio were deleted.

10. When ready, press the delete key to remove the selected audio.
11. Ctrl-Z will undo the last editing if need be.
12. Save the edited file with Ctrl-W and follow the prompts to confirm.
That's it. MP3 Direct Cut is really a fast and easy program for minor
editing like this.

If you wish to clear this file and open another for editing just use Ctrl-F4.

HTH,
Jeff

Hi again everyone,

I could really use some help here. I didn't really get an answer last time.

I'll explain the situation.
I have Total Recorder right now, and unless I can use something
different, I'll have to use it.

I have a song I need to edit. There is about fifteen to twenty
seconds, in the middle of the song, that I need to cut out. So,
what I've done is the following:
I first began playing the song. When I got to the place I wanted to
cut, I did a Shift L to mark the front of the spot to select. It
finished and then I did a Shift R to end the selection.
I then hit the Delete key, but nothing happened when I tried saving
the file again.

What am I doing wrong?

I also just got the Direct Cut mp3 program, so if this can be done,
I could use some directions. I've been trying to do this for a week now.

Thanks.

MP3 Direct Cut and increasing playback speed

2009-03-22 Thread Jeff Samco
I have noticed when I have a MP3 file loaded and I am mousing around
the MP3 Direct Cut screen I hear reference to faster and slower
playback. There is nothing I can find about playback speed in the

Re: voice recorders that append

2009-02-23 Thread Jeff Samco

Hi, Steve,

I can only speak to the operation of the Sony ICD-B25 which is about
7 years old now. It is quite easy to use with the audio beeps
function turned on (which is by default). The clock and alarm
functions are totally inaccessible but all the basic and intermediate
functions are fine, such as:

record, stop, playback and skip forward and back;
splitting a recording, joining 2 recordings, erasing a recording;
moving from one folder to another, and so on.
But I cannot say what features remain accessible in currently-available models.
As for price, 7 years ago I paid about $75 but that's not going to
tell you what they cost today since recording capacities have
improved so dramatically and features added like stereo recording.

Fred's Head Companion recently highlighted a CD/DVD Burner which was
free and has a very screen reader friendly interface.

You can read about it at

but however, it doesn't use sappy 5 voices, but it can convert text to MP3.
Someone wanted a program that can convert text to MP3 that also uses
sappy 5 voices, Open Book 8.02 which is the latest version, does use
sappy 5 voices.

And it does a really nice job of converting text to MP3.
So you all may want to do some checking in to it.
My best regards!
 John.

Re: Zen Stone Plus Question

2008-07-20 Thread Jeff Samco
Hello, Larry,

Creative has made it confusing in the way they have incrimentally
adjusted names for new players as they come on line. To answer you
directly, the Zen Stone Plus has a radio and voice recorder along
with a screen menu system. Not me, but others say they have learned
to navigate the menus without sight. However, it sounds to me you are
more interested in the 4 GB capacity than the radio and recorder
functions. So, read on.

There is also a new line of Zen Stone players with a built-in
speaker. There is a 4 GB model. I have also recently purchased a MuVo
T100 player with 4GB capacity. I really like it. It has no screen and
no speaker. It functions just like a Zen Stone of which I own a 1 GB
model. If I had known of the Zen Stone with speaker prior to buying
my MuVo T100 I probably would have bought the Stone with speaker.

In any case, you and others might like to know that I just saw this
weekend that Creative has a sale going on for their MP3 players and
other items. Go to:

Hello Everyone,

I also apologize if this has been covered, but are the controls for the
player for game day audio more accessible this year? Man, wouldn't it be
nice if one could get Applian to add this to Replay-AV.

Re: zenstone

2007-08-24 Thread Jeff Samco
For DRM WMA files you have to use something like the Overdrive
transfer tool or Windows Media Player. This is because license
information needs to accompany the files so the player knows it is
alright to play them. Otherwise, the files are unplayable.

Simple sound settings restoration program

2007-07-31 Thread Jeff Samco
This simple, new program was recently announced in IRTI's email
newsletter called News Clips. I don't know anything more about it
except the exerpt I have included here. Sounds like it could be
useful in a number of situations.
Jeff
-

What Happened to my audio!
Do you ever find after someone else had been using
your PC that changes in your audio settings mysteriously occurred or is
completely shutdown rendering your screen reader useless?
Have you ever installed or used unfamiliar software and magically
your PC systems audio
output is disabled? We can tell you that IRTI tech support hears about this
scenario so often it has prompted us to write a New Talking Utility we
referred to as Audio SafeGuard.

Audio SafeGuard is a simple self voicing control that enables you to adjust
your PC's default audio settings providing accessible control for Volume
level and Mute State for your Master Volume, WAV audio output, CD
Player, SW Synth,
Microphone and Line input devices. The next time Audio SafeGuard is
launched, it compares the current default PC audio settings to the stored
preference file and automatically resets all audio parameters back to your
preferred audio settings.

Audio SafeGuard can be configured to run automatically when your computer
starts up or you can launch the application manually with a hot-key.In
either case, your preferred audio settings are automatically restored
without the need to ask for sighted assistance. If set to run at start up,
Audio SafeGuard temporarily loads, runs a sound check, then automatically

Hi Roger, there are a few solutions available. If you have access to
Microsoft Outlook, that is the Outlook that comes with Microsoft office, not
Outlook Express, then I'd highly recommend Skylook from
http://www.skylook.biz. This offers some brilliant integration between
Outlook and Skype at a number of levels, and one of the features is the
ability to record Skype calls. it records directly from the Skype stream, so
it doesn't require any additional sound drivers that might mess with your
sound card, and it's the most accessible, reliable solution in software I've
seen.

Question about Overdrive books and transferring to an MP3 player

2007-06-09 Thread Jeff Samco
Hello, list,

I have recently begun downloading and listening to Overdrive books
through my local talking book library. I was under the impression
that the 2 week check out time limit did not apply to placing a book
on a player with a WMA DRM license. However, I have found that the
Overdrive Console is the only way to transfer a book's files to an
MP3 player and it, too, tracks the experation date.
So, is there a way around this or was I mistaken about no time limit
for transfering?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Creative Zen Stone Player

2007-06-06 Thread Jeff Samco
As an alternative, aren't there battery charging units that plug into
a USB port? Power comes from loading batteries into the charging
unit. That way one could use rechargeable NiMH type batteries to
easily fuel the portable charger. Am I assuming correctly about this?

well for starters I can let you know since I got an invite a couple of days

a least with window eyes isn't accessible at all.
In order for me to get my juice name, I had to have my sighted wife help me
because none of the fields are read or labeled.
after I managed to sign on something starts playing allright but unless
someone clicks with the mouse the program doesn't work as i said earlier.
neither the arrows nor the cursor keys work here at all.
there are some good channels for what I could tell but perhalfs with jfw
might work better which I haven't tried with though by the looks of the
program I don't think so.

RE: Sound Forge and Noise Reduction

2007-04-10 Thread Jeff Bishop
Yes. I completely removed Sound Forge 7 and all associated items (CD Arch,
preset manager, and Noise Reduction 2.0D) before installing 9.0A. It did
install it and the options are the same as though in the 2.0D version but
they are invoked under the Tools menu as well as the DX Favorites menu (like
you used to have to do).

You don't have to do this, but I didn't want mmultiple versions on my
system.

They have. When you install SF9 it is installed after the main Sound Forge
components. You actually see the installer come up for Noise Reduction 2.0.
It is version 2.0E. It is invoked from the Tools menu of SF9.

Yes, Dean. They're one and the same. But, it is not a part of Sound
Forge unless version 9.0 has incorporated it. The Noise Reduction that's
built into Sound Forge is different and much more limited than Noise
Reduction 2.0.

OverDrive is strictly a subscription service. There are some 10

RE: Game Day Audio in Windows Media Player - not in browser ...

Subject: RE: Game Day Audio in Windows Media Player - not in browser ...

There are numerous ways to control volume even if you cannot get at the
volume controls within the gameday player.

(1) Get a keyboard that includes extra keys for raising and lowering volume
as well as muting.

(2) Autohotkey from autohotkey.com
has among numerous scripts available a volume control one where you can
define keys to do this.

On the programs page of JFWlite

www.jfwlite.com

you will find a link to a program called Volume Tray.
This too gives you control over your volume.

Another handy utility called

Wizmo

available from

www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

allows you to do all sorts of neat tricks. I have set up hotkeys to set 5
different volume levels and another that makes certain that the soundcard is
active.
A couple other neat functions of Wizmo is that it can force shutdowns and
reboots of your pc in those times when all else fails and normal
shutdowns/reboots just hang.

With all of the above, why worry if you can happen to locate a particular
player's volume controls.

Try tabbing with the JAWS virtual PC or Window-Eyes browse mode off until
you hear unmamed view. This will ensure focus is in the WMP control on the
page. Shift+tab is faster.

RE: Hats Off to Apple

2007-03-07 Thread Jeff Bishop
The proof is in the pudding. Apple still hasn't gotten Windows Vista
support done let alone accessibility, so I am sure it is merely a priority
for the Mac platform more then it is for the Windows platform.

Better accessability for Itunes is being worked on. I'm not making excuses
for Apple but everything takes time and I'm sure that Windows users will end
up with a totally accessible version of Itunes before too long, just be
patient, can't say too much right now.
Why do Apple users make a thing about how accessible Itunes is?
Because quite simply its worth making a thing about, its taken a while but
Itunes has turned overnight from something which wasn't all that accessible
at all (more near to totally inaccessible) to something which is getting to
the point of being near totally accessible so that in itself is worth making
a thing about plus the fact that all the hard work and all the
correspondence between Apple and Voiceover users finally paid off, we now
have a commitment on behalf of Apple that further development will continue
etc.

On 08/03/2007, at 12:28 AM, Stephen Guerra wrote:

It appears that those who are using Macs are giving praise to Apple where I
as a Windows user still as most find that Itunes is still lacking.

Seems like any hint of an Apple user makes them scream that the little
tidbit that Apple does is golden, well, its not and they are not, (meaning
Apple) are Golden Delicious.

More like rotten Macintosh!
