Problems with my DVDR/CDRW drive

2005-04-29 Thread John
Hi Everyone, John here

I'm writing because I need help with a problem

My problem is:
My CDRW/DVDRW drive keeps playing up, I run Windows XP Pro. With Jaws 6.0.
My CDRW/DVDRW drive can play and recognise any disk that is put in to the
drive but there will be no problems but after that, say I put a CDRW or a
CDR or a DVDR or a DVDRW in to the drive the computer recognises that it is
a CD/RW/DVD/RW and it asks me what task to perform, now my problem, If I go
to write music or data files to the CDR drive I get a message that says
moving files and that completes successfully but then a icon pops up and
says there are files waiting to be written to the CDR drive CD so basically
it has saved them there but I can put a CDR/CDRW disk in the drive ahead and
the computer knows it's there but when I come to write to the CD, a messages
comes up saying, something like checking disk, and it scans to 100% and then
ejects the disk and then says the disk could not be writ and asks me to save
the files, and I've tried different brands of CDR's and the same happends
every time.

Thanks get back to me

problem with Sound card

2005-10-15 Thread John
Hello
I have an Audigy 2 sound card in my Dell PC running Windows XP Pro and
Window-Eyes with Dectalk Access for Window-eyes (and not the separately
installed speech engine).
The problem is that when an audio alert such as a wave file called by an
email program or the MSN Messenger coincides with Dectalk outputting speech
a loud click is emitted giving the impression that the sound card isn't
configured for simultaneous outputs.
Has anybody experienced this before and if so, what remedies are there
available?
Many thanks,
John

Re: about various topics on this list

2005-10-24 Thread John
I should leave the job of moderation to the moderator, Brian. it is
very fortunate that Jonathan Mosen is an easy-going reasonable sort
of person unlike some I could care to mention.
PC Audio is a list for the blind community to share and explore ways
of taking full advantage of digital audio tools on and off the
computer. Of course, in the case of software tools, the only way a
blind person can gain access to the interface is via a screen
reader. So, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise to you, Mr. Brian,
that people are mentioning JAWS or Window-Eyes in their posts
The subject of P2p networks is perfectly legitimate and relevant to
PC Audio too. Again, the focus is on digital audio files and their management.

Hi, Richard, go into preferences with control p, and arrow down to
plugins, then down arrow to input, and tab to the list, the first one
is the one you want, so press the configure button with the space bar,
upon which, you will be in a tab control, just control shift tab to the
right most tab, the streaming tab, and then tab to the track bars, and
for each of them, press the end key on the 6 pack, and with
window-eyes, at least, they both should say 50 of 50, but jaws will say
100 per cent, tab to okay, press the space bar, and press the space bar
on the close button to get out of preferences. This should minimize
break ups during a stream, because the buffer will be maximized.

Hi, John, I would personally reccommend a reinstall of winamp, and
though this might seem drastic, you'll understand why in a bit. The
modern skin support and our screen readers do not get along at all, and
so to avoid ever running into that problem, reinstall winamp 5.05, and
during the installation, tab to the tree-view in the installer, and in
this installer, everything is checked by default, so, I personally
would press the space bar on winamp agent, to prevent it from being
installed, and modern skin support, to prevent it from being installed,
and visualizations, because we don't need them. If you use your review
cursor, as you press the space bar to unselect more and more things,
you'll find the space needed to install winamp gets smaller, and
smaller, and ideally, instead of 12 megs, it should be about 6 megs,
but this is a rough guess of whatt is being installed. Then after
you've unselected all the things you want to with the space bar, then
you can proceed to the next part of the installation. Doing this, will
insure that you'll never choose the modern skin by mistake. To get out
of the skins list, just hit shift tab, and you're back in the
tree-view, just hit p for plugins, and go from there.

Hi gary, thanks for your message. i had a talk with humanware two weeks
ago, asking whether there was any chance that we might be able in the
future to read the kindle downloads on victorstream. but i was told, that
amazon wouldn't agree. i downloaded four kindle books, and my son-in-law
used some programme on the amazon site to convert them in to text files
for me. the first one, searobber by kevin severin victor played well. but
the other three were hopeless. every time there was an apostrophe in the
middle of a word, such as you'll or an apostrophes at the end of a word,
the victor made the file concerned in to utter garbage. as for specialty
machines, i think we certainly do need them. commercial products are
working more and more towards to touch screens and no keyboard. i am not
at present going to get the new victorstream, as frankly, i am waiting for
someone of us who is actually using one, to tell us how he is getting on.
i certainly would like a better text to speech programme. i am told that
acapela or whatever the one in the new victorstream for playing text
files,is called, is good, but one can't speed it up. well, we have now
probably taken this subject as far as we can. good wishes to all the list,
brian. p s, is acapela a programme we can download to use separately.
anyone know. brian.

Re: CD Problem

2013-05-02 Thread john

Hi,

It does sound like some kind of protection system. I'm not sure what method
of protection would give this but I'm guessing it may be something called
multi-session disc.

I wouldn't know how to brake this protection but you could use a regular cd
player with a sound card to record the tracks as wave or mp3 to your pc by
connecting the output of your cd player to the input of your sound card and
use an audio recorder program like audasity or sound forge.

Subject: CD Problem

Hello

A few years ago I purchased a set of 12 double disc albums called
ClassicJazz from Time Life. I’ve played them often on a CD player in the
room I keep my PC. That has now been removed and all music is played on my
pC with the surround sound it’s hooked into. I decided to load all my
music onto an external hard drive and get rid of the discs. I found these
jazz discs will not load into the PC player. Going to My Computer the CD
drive shows as empty. The same is true of my wife’s laptop and my son’s PC
and laptop but any player except one connected to a computer will play
them with no problems. I’ve contacted Time Life and find the UK site no
longer exists. Therefore I dealt with the US Company. The ClassicJazz
series is no longer sold. I received a response to my email asking me to
phone them. I replied saying I’m located in the Uk and have heard no more
from them.

I seem to remember Sony brought out an anti copying method which sound
like what I’m experiencing here. I seem to also remember it was said you
could break this protection by rubbing a felt tip pen round the edge of
the disc. I’ve tried this to no avail. I could bring back a CD player into
this room and fit it into the sound system just to play this one set of
discs but I’d much rather have them all on my hard drive. Has anyone any
ideas to help me, please?

Many thanks Roger

Re: PHP and Shoutcast

2013-05-05 Thread john

Hi John,

I've not done much in internet broadcasting but did a little with shoutcast.
If you are looking for a large number of listeners, have you looked at third
party streaming hosts like:

http://www.listen2myradio.com/

As far as I know, when you host your own streaming server, the number of
listeners is restricted to things like server hardware, isp host etc. When I
dabbled on my 4gb ram pc with adsl isp host of 256kps up stream, I only got
5/6 concurrent listeners at 128bit streams before it started buffering.

So by making use of a third party streaming host, you only have to maintain
the stream to the host, while your listeners get their streams from the
host.

Hi Humberto,

I am wanting seriously to do a internet radio broadcast and was wondering
if shoutcast was the way to go. I don't want to just broadcast to a few
folks, but to mmany many. I am truly a greenhorn concerning all of this
stuff. I have a MacBook Pro that I am just learning and I am running a
Kruzweil K2600 keyboard through an Allen - Heath Zed 12FX mixer that I
just got today. I have a lot to learn and I was also wondering if you
would point me to some simple but good tutorials or podcasts on this
subject?

Thanks much,

Hi Jo,

Please don't give up and throw away your credits, if you feel audible are
not providing you suitable support, then contact someone higher up in
audible or perhaps an independant body to help you. At the bare minimum if
they are unable to support you, they should offer you a full refund of your
total un-used credits, as they are failing to provide yyou a service.

Which screen reader do you use? I am currently using nvda and IE8 and was
able to download books from my libary since the recent changes. However, I
haven't tried searching for new books or buying new books on the new site.

hello brian, o boy, what a mess, audible i mean, i spent thirty minutes on
the phone yesterday with a lady in jamaica trying to get her to understand
my problems with audible,, she was very indistinct and couldn't make out
what i was trying to say, eventually she agreed to put my six credits on
hold for three months as i was having difficulty in accessing them, she
then told me that my e mail address could not be found, i gave her my
amazon details, yes, she found me, wow, we're getting somewhere, then she
agreed to send me a password change e mail, along with a contact at
audible to whom i could write and complain about the treatment i've had
from audible, yes, you've guessed it, that was yesterday afternoon and
zilch, i've heard nothing, so for the last time today i'm going to call
audible and if nothing happens i'll forfeit my six credits and cancel
everything, it's gone beyond a joke now, i started having this problem
with audible last december, and it's now may, and i'm still without my
audible books, sorry once again for the rant, but it's really bugging me,

RE: M3u extensions and there placement

2005-11-29 Thread John Sanfilippo
How about just using shortcuts?

I'm not totally sure about this, but I believe part of the problem is
that those m3u files highly depend on being located in the same location
as the files they index, or else they must be edited to contain correct
file path information. I no longer bother with them and delete them.
Better still, I disable their creation in my ripper.

In my situation, I do the following:

I have a folder called lyrics. In it are textfiles containing the lyrics
of tunes. Each file corresponds to a tune.
I have another folder containing sub folders, containing subsubfolders
of mp3 files.

Now, what I want is to have shortcuts pointing to the mp3 file and the
corresponding text file. I used to make a special collection folder and
copy the mp3 file and the text file there, which means that I now am
using gobs of disk space because of all these duplicated files. One day
a new way dawned on me:

I now have a shortcuts folder, or folders, each of which may contain
shortcuts to the mp3 files and text files of my choice. I can pick and
choose from anywhere on my system, including external drives but the
shortcuts are all centrally located.

How to make the shortcuts: I'm using Windows XP, the Explorer ap.
Go to the mp3 file using Windows Explorer.
Press the windows applications key for the context menu.
Press s until you hear make shortcut., and press enter.
A short cut to MyFile.mp3 is made in the same folder as MyFile.mp3 You
will move this and other shortcuts to your shortcuts folder now or
later.

I do the same thing for the text files, but in that case only one press
of s for create shortcut is necessary.

I copy all the shortcuts to the shortcuts folder and rename them like
this:
MySong1.m
MyLyrics1.t
HelloAgain.m
HelloAgain.t
BabyFace.m
BabyFace.t

I take the trouble to totally rename the shortcuts because Windows names
them exactly the same as the file, so that if you should go looking for
files like myMusic.mp3 the file and the shortcut will show up in the
list. I find this quite confusing and undesirable. Incidentally, if
anyone knows a better work around for this matter of excluding shortcuts
in such a find, I'd be happy to hear about it.

Another nice thing about renaming shortcuts is that they provide a way
of giving files aliases without renaming the actual file. The shortcuts
can be renamed to anything you like. You can have N different shortcuts
with different names pointing to the same file, so that if the actual
file is 03King of the Road.mp3, you can have shortcuts like the 3 which
follow:

Trailers.m
142Dillan's best song
0GuessWhatIAm

I may use Explorer to point to this folder, press the aps key, press p
until I hear "play in WinAmp", and just enter. The contents of the
shortcuts folder containing my particular collection plays.

Now, having said all this, I confess I've heard an awful lot about the
use of, for instance, the WinAmp library, and/or the library system of
any of the media players, but I've never touched them. However, this
may very well be exactly what you're looking for if you want to try to
learn it.

Hth,
Js

Hi, this is Steve. I have music folders with m3u extensions. If I press
enter within the folder, the entire folder will play. I would like to
create a completely different folder with just the m3u extensions. I
copied and pasted and it didn't work. Is there a way I can have a folder
on my Pc, which just has m3u extensions, and when entering, will go to
the right place and play the entire folder?

MP3 versus WMA

2005-12-24 Thread john G
Hi folks,
what is the consensus on the WMA format for music files? I have
music encoded in 320 bits MP3 and 192 WMA formats and to be honest
the difference in quality is barely noticeable. I suppose after
quality what matters most is the compatibility factor. Have you guys
found there to be equal support for the two formats in hardware media
players such as juke-boxes and mp3 players?

Any other information, personal observation or opinion on the subject
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Good PC Speakers

Hi
I'm looking for a decent pair of speakers, preferably of the 2.1
variety, for playing music. Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of
brands and models out there but if I were to use the words
clarity, projection and warmth would you be able to name any product
which bears those qualities in its performance?

Thanks,
John

I haven't tried reaper yet, though I intend to. Is Reaper trying to open
your card as asio? This would explain it, as Asio always gets priority
over WDM streams.

Yes, Patrick, that is correct. My feeling is that
allofmp3 is run entirely on a unix-based system
and as you say, using quotation marks doesn't
always resolve the issues with space chars in

Ok, fellows, so, what are we going to do about it? Do we have any
organised plans for responding to this reptile? First and foremost,
we need to get hold of his/her IP address(s). Then any plan of
action should be reasonably straightforward to implement.

Re: AudioMagic

2006-03-19 Thread john G
You can hardly blame folks for their lack of I.T. knowledge. Okay, if
you can deduce from file size that something's amiss you're in a good
position to keep rogue software at bay, at least in this particular
instance. However, a lot of people tend to take the claims associated
with the program at face value. I mean to say, why shouldn't they?
After all, this is the first incident of the blind being deliberately
targeted by these nasties. To blame them for having faith in human
nature is arrogant and unhelpful.
So, instead of
oh look how clever I am
let's put our minds together and deal with the issue at hand before
more unsuspecting people fall victim to the scam.

Poikosoft E z c d d a extractor 9.x wav/mp3 issue?

2006-04-19 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

One of the file output formats offered by this program is called
something like .wav (Fraunhoffer) mp3 codec. When I choose this format,
I get a nice surprise. Files which are about half the size of mp3 128
bps which to my ears sound every bit as good. But there's one very
puzzling fact. The files are saved as .wav files. WinAmp will not play
them. But, if you rename the file to .mp3, it plays in winAmp and in wmp
on a pac mate.

Why aren't these file simply named .mp3 in the first place? Does anyone
know how to deal with this?

Thanks,
Js

WMA Encoder for CDEx

2006-04-24 Thread john G
Hi folks
I use CDEx for converting CD tracks to other compressed formats. The
program comes by default with a Windows WMA encoder which supports a
maximum bit rate of 160.
So, does anybody know of a WMA encoder, suitable for CDEx, which
supports higher bit rates?
Alternatively, does anyone know of a CD ripping program similar to
CDEx which supports the WMA format with higher bit rates?
One of the features I particularly like in CDEx is the link it makes
with the remote CDDB database allowing for all the album details to
be transferred and registered as track titles and other labels. I
wonder if there are CD ripping utilities out there in the cyber space
with such a feature.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks
John

RE: question about dialog that comes up when a cd is inserted

2006-04-26 Thread John Sanfilippo
I believe this is a nice feature of windows if you are paranoid like me
and want windows to ask permission to access anything, instead of just
going and doing it. Just arrow thru the choices each time it comes up.
If you turn it off, I do not know how to turn it back on. I think that's
your question.

After I insert a cd, a dialog box comes up which has seven choices as to

what action I want the computer to perform each time I insert a cd. My
question is where does this dialog originate from and is there a way to
change my preference at a later time?

2006-04-26 Thread John Sanfilippo
O, No biggy, if it doesn't work, just highlight the file and press
control z to undo the name from file.mp3 to file.wav.

But it is also a good idea to check file associations.

While we're on this topic, does anyone know about the mp3/wav

WMA Encoders (re-visited)

2006-04-27 Thread john G
Hi
I tried the MS MediaPlayer but to be honest found it to be very
confusing. All I'm looking for is an encoder, I think that's what
they call it, to work with my CDEx program which allows for CD tracks
to be encoded into 192 bit rate WMA tracks. The Microsoft WMA
encoder which is packaged with CDEx only goes up to 160 bit rate.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
John

Problem with the Easy CD Ripper Interface

2006-04-27 Thread john G
That's great, Jonathan, I have now downloaded and installed the easy
CD ripper. There's only one problem, however. First I should point
out that I'm a Window-Eyes user. I can't locate the button for
ripping the tracks from the CD. I did come across it when I first
launched the program but for some reason I'm no longer able to find
it again. is there a hotkey for starting the ripping process? What
I have found with the interface is that once you finish tabingb
through a list of options, instead of returning to the original tab
control, you unintentionally find yourself in a different dialog and
tab control. It's a bit like the Lion, The Whitch and the
Wardrobe. The only difference being that I've not met Aslan yet. *smile*
So, in a nutshell, a great piece of software, it does exactly what I
want it to do but the interface is a little confusing.
Any solutions?

Many thanks
John

Tracy! I believe that the official opinion is that ProTools under
Windows is not accessible through Window Eyes, JAWS or any other screen
reader and is only accessible on Mac's running system 9 and some earlier
operating systems with Outspoken.
I believe you'd do much better with this question on MIDIMAG. You
can subscribe to MIDIMAG from www.midimag.org There are people on
MIDIMAG who are involved with beta testing ProTools for accessibility
under Windows.

Additional Sound Cards

2006-05-02 Thread john G
Hi
I have a Dell computer which is equipped with an on-board sound card
and a separate Audigy 2 sound card. when I first added the Audigy
everything seemed to function normally until one day I switched on
the computer only to find that there was no audio output. Later it
transpired that the Audigy was causing some sort of conflict with the
on-board card. the chap from Dell solved the conflict by making some
adjustments in the BIOS, I think.
Window-Eyes 5.5 supports additional sound cards which means that at
last i may be able to channel the speech through a separate set of
speakers to those for outputing music. what I am not sure of is
whether a new sound card will work without the aforementioned
problems. Does anyone on the list run Window-Eyes on a computer with
more than one active sound card? What precautions would I need to
take in order to avoid potential hardware conflicts?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Many thanks
John

Re: Burning CDs With Windows Media Player

2007-04-08 Thread John Price
Hello Tom,
I've used Windows Media Player 11 to burn cds.
I didn't have that kind of problen, but I did run in to this kind of a
problem.
I ripped a cd that I wanted to make myself a coppy of.
I found that you had to play them all to get them all on to the cd.
Because if you didn't, WMP11 would only burn one of those songs on to the
cd, and lieve the other 12 or 13 or so out.
That is why I myself switch back to Windows Media Player 10.
So everybidy out their, watch out for that, because that can be a reall
pane.

Re: Cassett deck to pc.

2007-04-08 Thread John Price
Hello Anders Holmberg, DJ DR. P here.
Chances ar, your sound card is sat at it's default settings.
As for the USB casset deck, I don't know if there is anything like that out
there.
But I will tell you how to reset your sound card.
Step #1. go in to my computer.
Step #2. go in to the control pannal.
Step #3. scrole down to whare it says sound&audio devices and press anter on
it.
Sep #4. If you are a Jaws user, it will tell you the diffrent settings.
Step #5. Tab over to whare it says line in and then use the up and down aros
to ajust it and their you are.
The same steps can be applyed to the other settings in the sound&audio
devices.
One more thing, don't forget to tab over to the ok butten and press anter on
it to save your settings.
I hope I have been of some help to you, goot luck.

Your dorectional keys is how you will make the ajusments.

When one receives an email with an inserted audio file, and the file
plays as long as the message is open, where in the file structure is the
actual audio file hiding? I have such a message, and I'd like to
scavenge the audio file.

Thanks.

RE: SanDisk Sansa e200 Series MP3 players.

2007-04-15 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi Jim and listers,

Well, this was my experience with this product. I can hope that it was
just my bad luck and or lack of patience, and that it will be much nicer
for someone else, but, in my experience it was not especially friendly:

The price per unit was around $90, a really attractive price for what
this promised to be. The physical size and apparent layout seem very
nice. The model I was interested in played video and had a 2gb capacity.

But to change anything in the setup of the unit, you had to use the
software and it was not at all accessible. I could not get past the open
screen or access the cd to get at some alternate setup program.

The Sansa is set to come up in a special music mode (I forget the
precise letters) which interfaces with windows media player. I couldn't
get wmp to announce what it was finding on the unit so that kinda turned
me off.

There's supposed to be a way to set the unit to work in a more general
mode where it appears as a usb drive, but I believe that had to be set
via the software. So, around it went.

Unfortunately, I had to return the product.

Regards,
js

Re: combining mp3 files

2007-04-24 Thread John Price
Hello Melissa,
I won't try and tell you what to do, but I would like to make a sajustion.
Create a new folder, then go in to one of your audio books, do a control-a
to sullect all.
Then do a control-c to coppy to clipboard.
Then do a control-v to coppy all of the mp3 files in to the new folder.
Then do a control-a to sullect them all agin, and hit inter and Windows
Media Player will automadicly begin playing all of them for you.
If you want to skip ahead, do a control-f to skip ahead, and a control-b to
go back, and there you are!
I do this with my music files all of the time.
It works grate!
That is one way to combined them all together.
Good luck.

Re: combining mp3 files

2007-04-24 Thread John Price
It will work with that to as well.
An mp3 file is an mp3 file, rather it's in the form of an audio book or
music.
It is still a groop of mp3 files so it will still work.
I read audio books on my computer too so that's what I do to get it to work
for me.

Re: need info for computer speakers/ or speaker set up for computer

2007-04-25 Thread John Price
Hello Sunshine,
The speaker/amplifier system I have for my computer, is a system I bilt from
the ground up myself.
My speaker boxes are made of salet oke wood.
My inturnal speaker components are 2 8 inch full range drivers that I
ordered from:
http://www.tubesandmore.com
I have 2 15watt stereo tube amplifiers that I bilt from kits whitch I
ordered from:
http://www.s5electronics.com
the 2 stereo amplifiers are running in mono bridge mode to give me 30 watts
to each speaker.
If I can remember correctly, I payed $165.95 each for boath complete kits.
And for the speakers, I payed $75.95 each+shipping.
I use my computer to downlode alot of music, and I have tryed lots of
computer speaker systems, none of them gave me the kind of soun I was
looking for.
So I made my ohn, I am very happy with it.
If you know what you are doing, these tube amplifiers are easy to billd.
But ladies and gental men out their, please be very careful, they requier
120 volts to operate them, but 200 to 250 volts are on the cirket boards of
each one of these.
The models for the amplifiers are the 12-G, the speakers are the Jensen
P-8-Q.
If you don't want to go the rout that I went, Sound Blaster has some pretty
good speaker systems.
You can check them out at:
http://www.soundblaster.com
also SONY has some pretty good speaker systems too.
Check them out at:
http://www.sony.com
good luck on finding the speaker system that sutes your needs.

I believe most things in Sound Forge work with WE but some of the
sliders do not. You might ask on the GW-Micro list. Somebody may
have managed those sliders using the mouse keys.

Looking for an Audacity tutorial

I cannot find the shortcut keys anywhere. Most of them are there, but
I cannot figure out how to record, play, rewind, fast forward, or
stop. Can somebody please give me the shortcuts? Also, do I just open

multi-track software and I absolutely despise N-Track. Thanks for the

AMR files?

2007-04-28 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

My Nokia 6682 cel phone creates A M R files which I'd like to edit in
GoldWave. When I attempt to open such files in GW, I'm offered Dialogic
vox and Ra snd as choices. Within each of these there are yet more
parameters to choose. Would anyone know just what specs to set, if any,
to open these files? Of course, a Nokia sound player will play these amr
files, but, I'd like a bit more control of the audio.

Help much appreciated,
Js

Hello Dan,
First of all, what kind of a sound card ar you using?
I know that all Sound Blaster cards lets you monictor what ever you are

It lets you use your pc speakers to monictor what's coming in from that

Re: Looking for an Audacity tutorial

2007-04-29 Thread John Moore
Thanks for the help. THat guide is awesome. Now, I have another
problem. I am trying to record a couple of my friends singing a song
with a karaoke track. It seems that when Audacity lays down the
vocals, there is a delay that results in the vocals being one beat
off. Is there any way I can fix that? I sure hope it isn't my mixer
and sound card.
