Note, Docuscan plus is not a scanner it is OCR software. It requires a
scanner or camera to work.

Hi John,
You can obtain an accessible scanner from www.Serotek.com. They have one
called DocuScan Plus. It's heard to be very accurate and you can scan books
or any printed materials with it. The coolest thing about it is, that you
can even save the stuff you scan as a braille file, that you can either copy
to your braille notetaker, if you have one, or send it to a braille printer
if you have one. one.
Mike
Rochester, NY. You can get more information about it and you can contact the
company using the information provided on their website.

I am in need of a good flatbed scanner that scans fast and accurately.
Someone on one of the lists mentioned that the Plustek Optecbook flatbed
scanner is good for scanning books which is what I will be doing a lot of.

I use JAWS, Windo-Eyes and NVDA.

Thanks for any Helpful suggestions,

If you have the latest firmware on your Ipod you need to go to settings and

RE: J-Tunes 4.0 is released!

2008-10-15 Thread Karl Smith
I think the comparison of the J-tunes scripts and something
like Norton
Ghost or antivirus products is invalid. Consider the market
for something
like an antivirus program. It is definitely in the millions
for the
original product and the yearly subscriptions. I don't know
anything about
Brian's business but if he has sold more than a thousand or
so copies of his
scripts I would be surprised. Prices are determined by the
work involved in
producing a product but also the size of the market. I
remember a
conversation I had with Ted Hinter many years ago when
Windows 3.1 came out.
He was saying that for $79.00 which is what it cost then,
you got a lot of
software. This was when JAWS was $795.00. There have
probably been maybe
250,000 copies of JAWS sold since the beginning and I
remember when Windows
95 arrived I read an article that stated that Microsoft was
shipping
something like 38 million copies per week. That is the
difference of scale
between these markets.

The bottom line is that no one who feels Brian is charging
too much will
likely change their mind and that's surely their right. I
do think it is
somewhat presumptuous to assume that he is simply trying to
rip off the
blind or agencies serving the blind because you think the
price is too high.
All my dealings with him have been professional and helpful.
 He provided me
with answers and information even before I ever spent any money.

So I say as I did before. Try the scripts demo and see if
you like them.
If they give you a value you think is worth it then buy
them. If not don't.

I am not a big jaws user, though I own version nine. But didn't Jim
Snowbarger and others who write scripts use to charge somewhere around $25
or so for their scripts?
I could see paying 25 or $30. That makes sense to me, but paying as much as
I paid for Norton ghost 12, which is clearly a much more complex program
just seems wrong to me.
Still, if he can get $70 for his scripts, more power to him.
I have always been impressed with the guy. I just wish he'd rethink his
price structure.
Regarding itunes being free, I suppose that one could assume that that was
figured into the price of the Ipod, somehow, since you need itunes to even
use the thing.
But a 4gb ipod is only $100. That should make itunes pretty cheap if you
figure it as part of the package.
Still, it is a much more complicated program than is the JTunes script or
the 40 dollar antivirus program I use.

I have a fundamental problem with paying more for a script for a
program than the program itself, and in this case, the program itself
is free! I can understand, though, why the scripts are as pricy as
they are. It's not just one single script with a handful of
quick-and-dirty functions--not by a long shot--but paying more for the
script than most low-end MP3 players, well, I'd have to think about
that long and hard, and I hope T&T Consultancy might do the same.

RE: SV: J-Tunes 4.0 is released!

2008-10-13 Thread Karl Smith
Have you tried the scripts? No one is going to hold a gun to your head to
pay for them if you don't want. Notice the version is 4.0 so it looks like
Brian has convinced enough people that the work he has done is worth it.
Why do you people insist on whining about something like this? If it is
just a simple script then write them yourself and give them away if you
want. If the price is too high then the market will decide it.

The J-tunes scripts take a program which is useable with JAWS and make it an
efficient well running pleasure to use. If you don't want to pay for it
then don't but don't make stupid and unsubstantiated comments about Brian
when you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

Yeah. 20-30, but no way I am paying 70-80 for just a script no matter how
good it is.
Somehow, that reminds me when people who created accessible software used to
charge outrageous prices because they knew they could screw some agency who
would pay it. I really think this price structure should be rethought.

I too am a fan of freeware and open source software, but remember iTunes
has only just now become accessible "out of the box". You may also need
the latest versions of the screen readers as well, like the second
release of the JAWS 10 Beta, although I'm not sure about this particular
point. I'm more than willing to pay for an accessible solution when
either there isn't a free accessible solution at all or the free
solution is just a lot tougher to use. I'll also support the development
of accessible software by paying for software that's been made
accessible, although there is a limit! I'm not sure if J-Tunes is worth
the price, but it's my understanding that up until Apple released iTunes
8, you didn't have a lot of other options.

Just to come clean, I've never used J-Tunes, itunes or an iPod. For my
part, the Apple space is just too expensive and proprietary, although to
be honest, the iPod Nano 4th Generation does have me intrigued.

I don't. I am testing Sandisks now. They are a bit more expensive but I

I am going to be selling over 300 record albums, and I would like to know a
couple of things before I begin. Does anyone have any suggestions on
cleaning up the albums? They aren't too bad, but I'd like to clean them up
some. Also, some of these albums are worth quite a lot of money, while
others aren't. Is there a website or resource for finding out how to price
them? I am also doing the same with close to 300 45's. Thanks.

Misunderstanding about Ipodder

2006-09-03 Thread Karl Smith
Hello Folks,

Some time ago I downloaded the Ipodder software. I have been fiddling

them. I guess I have missed something because I can't seem to get any of
them to play. Do I need something else to play the feeds I've downloaded?

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply
irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac
OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system
on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta
today.

As elegant as it gets

Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though
you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does
not sell or support Microsoft Windows.(1) Boot Camp will burn a CD of all
the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the
Internet looking for them.

Optional alt. At startup, hold down the option key (alt) to choose between
Mac OS X and Windows.

Run XP natively

Once you've completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at startup
to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. (That's the "alt" key for you
longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows completely
natively. Simply restart to come back to Mac.

What you'll need
List of 7 items
. Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.6 (check

. The latest Firmware update (check

. 10GB free hard disk space
. An
Intel-based Mac
. A blank recordable CD
. A printer for the instructions (You'll want to print them before
installing Windows, really.) . A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft
Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or
Media Center versions.) list end

The Boot Camp course

Boot Camp Public Beta provides a straightforward means of letting your Mac
run Windows. Here's how it works:
Intuitive partitioning.

Space maker. Meet the most elegant hard drive utility ever.
List of 6 items
. First, you need to make sure your Intel-based Mac has the latest version
of Mac OS X and the latest firmware update. These provide technologies that
make Boot Camp possible. It's also wise to print out the Installation &
Setup Guide.
. The Boot Camp burns a CD with the drivers Windows needs to recognize
Mac-specific hardware. It is very important to do this before starting the
Windows installation.
. The software also helps you set aside hard drive space for the Windows
installation, without moving any of your Mac files around. Just drag the
intuitive slider to choose the size that's right for you. Boot Camp also
helps you remove the Windows partition, should you so desire.
. Next, insert your Windows installation disc, restart and follow the
Windows installation process. The only tricky part is selecting the C: drive
manually.
Be sure to get this right, or you could erase your Mac files accidentally.
Remember, Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows.
. After the installation process is complete and your Mac has booted
Windows, you'll need the Macintosh Drivers CD you burned previously. When
you insert the CD, it will automatically install the drivers. Follow the
instructions in the Installation & Setup Guide for helpful hints.
. Don't forget to follow best practices for updating and protecting your
Windows system (see "Word to the wise" to right).

List of 1 items

Included Amenities

For your convenience, Boot Camp burns a CD with all the Mac-specific drivers
for Windows:

. Networking
. Audio
. AirPort wireless
. Bluetooth
. The Eject key (on Apple keyboards)

This CD also installs a Startup Disk control panel for Windows. To find it,
look for Startup Disk in the Performance and Maintenance section of the
Windows XP Control Panel. See the Installation & Setup Guide for more
details.

Everything but the sign-up process is quite accessible. They do provide a

RE: User friendly DVD payer

I have gotten so irritated by the variations in DVD format and my inability

As mentioned before that depends on the dvd itself. I'll give a perfect
example of two different tv series which have a completely different
structure. First is Friends. The way all ten seasons are set up is just the
way you would like. You start the dvd, press play once and the first episode
starts. If you press the forward button you go to the next episode, and so
on and so forth. The reason this works this way is because what they did is
make all six episodes on each dvd one large movie for simple terms. Each
episode then is basically like a chapter in that movie. What they then did
is take each separate episode and put it on the dvd as well a second time as
individual chapters so in essence, each episode is on there twice. One as
part of all six episodes together and two as separate episodes. I believe
the reason they did this was so that one could either continuously play all
episodes back to back using the first method or so one could play one
episode at a time using the second method. I still have not figured out how
to use the second method but I have not really tried as using the first
method has worked well for me.

Now onto the second example of tv dvd structure. I use Star Trek Deep Space
Nine series for this. When you start the dvd you are presented with what is
called the main menu for simple terms. This main menu just has four options.
Each option is an episode name as there are usually four episodes per dvd.
With most newer dvd players simply pressing the number on the keypad and
then pressing menu or play will activate that menu item. So if I wanted to
watch episode 3 on the dvd I'd press the number 3 on the keypad and then
play. This then loads episode 3 and takes me to the episode menu. This one
is similar to the first menu one sees on a regular movie dvd. It has play,
language, setup, scene selections, etc, and lastly, return to main menu. On
most Star Trek dvds this is option 4 so to return to the main menu showing
the four episodes I press 4 on the keypad and then play. While in this
episode menu I can press 1 and then play or just play by itself and the
episode starts playing. While watching this episode it has chapters which
can be moved to by pressing the forward button, I can also use the backward
button to go to previous chapters within this episode only.

I hope all this makes sense.

snap to use and quite accessible. They are, in fact, just barely
accessible. Let me explain.

I can, as has been stated by others, listen to my XM radios with little
trouble. I can choose the stations I want by number or move up and down
the dial with little trouble. The problem is that this is only the bare
bones minimum of what is available for my monthly service. I have a Myfi
portable unit for example which is a wonderful device. I can do all the
things I have stated on it with ease.

But here are some of the features I can't use.
1. I can't read the display to get the artist and title of the song.
2. I can't set the presets.
3. the other day the unit got locked and I didn't know why until I
discovered which button to press and how to press it to unlock it.
4. The Myfi allows for programmed recording of events much like a VCR
records TV programs which I cannot do because I can't see the screen.
5. After recording my selections it is possible, if you can see, to rotate
the selection wheel and go through a list of all the songs which played
during the recorded item and select only the one or ones you want to hear.
6. my car radio and my Bose stereo require the XM radio to be set at
different volumes for undistorted listening. I have to have my driver do
this because it can only be done on the screen.
7. here's one I forgot. On the Myfi unit you can select an artist you like
and be advised every time that artist's music is playing on any channel,
if, of course, you can see the screen.

There are others such as knowing the battery level or satellite strength
but I think you get the picture.

Now I'm not meaning to whine about the unfairness of it all but I think we
need to continue to let manufacturers and service providers know about our
needs. I'm now still kicking myself for not getting an XM PCR when they
were available. Finally, I think XM is a great service and I hope we can
do something about not only the web site but the radios as well.

Re: New portable hard disk recorder from Edirol

2004-12-06 Thread Karl Smith
I looked at this recorder and wonder if anyone knows the price and if the
system is very accessible. I note one reference to watching the screen and
wonder if there are audio methods to do the same thing.

You can read a features list at www.edirol.com. One can find it quickly
by searching for r 4 (r space 4).
This sounds phantastic!

USB FM transmitter

2004-11-30 Thread Karl Smith

Hi Folks,

I'm sure this was covered before but, naturally, I wasn't as interested in
this as I am now. Which model of USB FM transmitter have people been
buying and does it require power or does it draw power from the USB
port? Thanks.

Re: extracting the audio from a DVD

2004-10-11 Thread Karl Smith
Hi Ted,
About a month ago I had the same question and was directed to DVD audio
Ripper. I bought the software for $29.95 and I have been able to extract
audio just as I wanted. The problem is now I can't figure out where I got
it. Maybe if you search for DVD Audio Ripper you can find it. If I figure
it out I'll let you know.

ripping DVD audio to MP3

2004-09-06 Thread Karl Smith
Some time ago I asked if there is any software which will allow me to rip
the audio from a DVD and put it into an MP3 file. I thought I had an
answer but apparently didn't store it where I thought I did. Is there such
software and where can I get it if it exists? thanks.

ACB radio convention stream figured it out

2004-07-07 Thread Karl Smith

Hi Folks,
It turns out that the applications key or the shift applications key are
not the same as the right mouse button in this case. I tried the right
mouse button and was able to download the file. That's how it's done in
case anyone wants to know.

ACB radio convention stream

2004-07-07 Thread Karl Smith

Hi Folks,
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to download the ACB convention
coverage so that it can be played in Winamp or something? There is an FTP
link for each day of coverage but when I activate it it just plays but
doesn't let me download the file. The link just above the FTP link says
"listen" so I assumed that the FTP link would let me download a file. If I
right click the link I don't get a save source choice. Anyway, can anyone
out there help?

Ripping audio from DVDs

2004-06-13 Thread Karl Smith
Hello,
I'm sure this question has been asked before but, as everyone else says in
this situation, I didn't need the information then and now I do. Is there
a software package which will let you rip audio from a DVD which is
accessible with a screen reader?

Win Amp opening minamized

2004-05-15 Thread Karl Smith

Hi Folks,
Lately for some reason I can't figure whenever I start playing a file with
Win Amp it seems to be minimized. If I want to turn it off I have to go to
the system tray and right click it to get a menu to exit. I can't seem to
figure out how to get back to the Win Amp window I used to get when opening
a file. Any suggestions?
