Actually I've found that this space bar pausing only works when you have Jaws loaded. If you unload Jaws, only the C key pauses, and the space bar does nothing. Thanks a lot. Re: another winamp question
Well I don't know about a playlist, but if you just hit control A within a folder, it will play the whole thing. Make sure not to select any documents or other files besides mp3s, because that will lock up the program. If you hit alt E when using Jaws within Winamp, the playlist editor will open up. Hit control alt G and it will generate a playlist chart for the selected tracks that Winamp is playing. It's not always accurate though, for some reason. Thanks a lot. Re: Question about Amazon MP3 downloads
That's the same question I had wondered. If you install the Amazon downloader, which is a fairly transparent application, then thereafter, when you click on buy track, it pulls up a window called Amazon downloader. The song then downloads without any further action. You can keep clicking on buy track on different songs and it will keep downloading. On my computer, it keeps me logged on, and my card is billed a few minutes later without any checkout process. It's basically a one-click thing, where you click on buy track. You should check the menu bar on the downloader program to make sure the files are being downloaded where you want them, and where you can find them. Thanks a lot. Re: n-Track Studio 6.0.1 Released
Hello, I haven't used the latest version either, being happy with my registered version from several years ago. I've just never needed anything else. Unless he has added the ability in there somewhere to perform mute and trimming operations in there, I just record what I need and mute breaths or other extraneous noises with Sound Forge, mix the track down, and then go back into Sound Forge to trim out the stuff before the song starts. I did a review on Main Menu when I first got the program, and so if you haven't heard that, you could get a feel for the program for anyone who hasn't tried this application. The developer is from Italy, and though English is not his first language, he converses well, and is very receptive to suggestions about accessibility from visually impaired users. I believe there may still be a link from his page to the review on Main Menu. Thanks a lot. Plug-in chainer gets in the way in Sound Forge
Hello, does anyone know how to get rid of the plug-in chainer that gets in the way when you move around with the cursor keys in the data window? It's slowing me down, because whenever I press a key, the plug-in chainer comes up, and I have to close it with control f4. If I minimize the plug-in chainer rather than close it, then the whole Sound Forge window goes away. I never use the plug-in chainer, and really don't know what it does, other than annoy me. Any help on getting it to leave me alone? The view menu doesn't do anything helpful. Thanks a lot. Is ITunes accessible with Windows?
Hello, I'd like to get some music from ITunes, since they seem to sometimes offer exclusive tracks. Is the program accessible with Windows XP and Jaws 7? I don't have an IPod or anything like that, and would only want to burn the downloaded tracks onto an audio cd, since that seems pretty straight-forward. Will this be possible? Re: A USB turn table question:
Also, I'm a bit leary when they say you can play your 33s and 78s, without giving you a specific needle for the 78s. You can play the 78s with the 33 needle, but the sound quality won't be as good, because of the difference in the width of the two different-sized grooves. I've not actually bought one of these USB turntables, since I'm content with connecting my turntable the analog way, but they may or may not offer the arm with the unscrewable cartridge. If they do offer the unscrewing option, then you'd just have to buy the headshell with a 78 needle or remove the 33 needle and put in the 78 one every time you wanted to switch. Thanks a lot. Although it's not an option in the menus, you can put bleep sounds in with Sound Forge. It's just a bit involved, but once you get the hang of it, it takes a few seconds. Re: editing unacceptable content out of songs?
Hello, there's a command called paste special in Sound Forge. An easier and more exact way to bleep out content without possibly losing your place, is to use the synthesis menu, simple tone, then five-second tone. Get a new data window for that, select all, and then go back to the project you're working on. Go to the first instance of bleeping, select the swearing section with I and O, then go to edit, then to paste special, and then hit overwrite. Never mind that the thing you've copied to the clipboard is a five-second tone. It will only take as much of the tone as it needs to fill your selection. I know it sounds detailed, but once you get that tone copied, it goes by really fast, especially with keystrokes. Alt E, S, then O. Go to the next section, select data with I and O, then repeat the keystrokes. I hope this helps you with future projects. Thanks a lot. Re: Sound Forge, normalizing and Volume
Hello, if you want to use the normalization feature in SF, you would select those parts which are lower than the rest, and normalize those one by one. I should add a statement that the noise will spike up louder and drop lower, and will not be smooth between transitions. If you ever are dealing with live concert material, never normalize talking portions or bring down applause. Always normalize the whole show as one piece. re: saving single channel output: was Another sound forge question
Hello, it's a little involved, so here it goes. Focus on the channel you want to save, such as the left channel, move to the top with control home, hit control shift end, and then copy that to the clipboard. Hitting control A to select all is not what you want, as that will select all of the data in the entire file, both channels. Hit control E to paste that to a new data window. When that happens, you'll be moved to that new window, and the audio from the left channel will be playing in mono out of both speakers. Sound Forge has thus already created a mono file for you. You'll save this in whatever way you want now. When that's saved, you hit control tab to move between sound windows. If you chose to close that current window upon saving, then you'll just be put back to the first thing you were working on. Hit tab until you get to the other channel, and repeat the process. It sounds involved when written out, but you develop a rhythm when doing it. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: re saving single channel
Ah, I bet I can guess what you're doing. Those NLS tape recorders break down too often, so I order the tapes from the library, and record them from my standard tape deck into mp3 files. However, I use the high-speed dubbing function, by faking a recording in the other tape deck, and so I can record a side of an NLS tape in 22 minutes. Then I do those steps I told you about, only instead of fiddling with sampling rates, I use the pitch control and put it to minus 25 or so to slow it down. If you were going to do the high-speed dubbing thing, then the sampling rate trick won't work, as it's four times the speed with the high-speed dubbing. For the right channel, I just hit the reverse process. Then I encode each one into an mp3 at 22500 and 32 kbits, naming them with the side numbers. I don't know if encoding an mp3 from 22500 wav to 22500 mp3 would sound lesser quality than if the original .wav file was at 44100, but anyway, that's how I deal with NLS tapes for now, until they go digital. I should say for anyone wondering, that I don't make the mp3s available anywhere. Once I listen to them, I delete them, just like I'd send back the tapes. I'll not get another machine from them of the tape variety. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Sound Forge help with mixing voice overs
Hello, well it's using the technique of voice overs in Sound Forge, but my purpose is a little different. I've used the paste special menu, but it just doesn't turn out like I hoped. I have a concert recording where the singing and guitar is more to one side of the audio track than another. It's difficult to listen to like that, and I don't want to discard the stereo image because of the audience ambience. What I figured on doing was having one file be where the audio is on the left side mostly, and taking the exact same thing and swapping channels for the other file. So we have two files, one where the audio leans towards the left with audience ambience happening on the right, and the other file which is the exact opposite, with the audio leaning towards the right and audience ambience to the left. I figured I'd select all the data in one of the files, which one doesn't really matter, then flip over to the other file and use the paste special menu. I select mix, and then select the normal voiceover mode. The result leans one way or the other, and doesn't balance out. This sounds like it should work in theory. Is there something I've done wrong? If I did a straight channel copy, then that means losing the ambience on the channel where the guitar and voice are less prominent. Would I have to cancel out the less prominent channels first, then add them back in later? Any help would be appreciated, as I'd like a nice balanced recording. No, exactly the opposite. The needle will be fine for 33s and 45s, but will not be ideal for 78s. Though the 78s may play, you won't get the best sound. Re: torrent sites?
Ok, there is either shn or flac files. ETree.org is just a database of shows which are in the collections of traders. You have to e-mail the traders and ask for a trade, and then you work out the details, whether it be postal mail or ftp. Dime A Dozen actually has the files, but that depends on the sharing concept of torrents. If I were to upload a show to Dime, and three people downloaded, that would be four peers having the show. If I lost internet, or went offline somehow, the three peers would be left. If two of the three peers are not sharing the files, then this would leave only one person available to download from. When I come back online later, then the download increases for the person trying to get the files. If you're downloading a show and everyone of the four peers goes offline, then you're out of luck until at least one comes back online. So, Dime hosts the ability for the files, but the files are on all of our computers, depending on which shows we wish to share. If you're going to get into torrents, I would suggest you use UTorrent, from www.UTorrent.com since it's very easy to use. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? A new public domain sound editor
Here's an item which was posted to the blind Cool Tech list which should be very interesting. Matthew Hello all, I have written a new sound-editing application called Audio Magic. It is an alternative to Sound Forge 8, but it is in the public domain and it is freeware. It does not yet have all of Sound Forge's features, but we are only on the very first beta release at this point, and I would like all of your feedback on how I could improve the interface. I am a JAWS user myself, so I have tried to make the interface to the application as accessible as possible. You will not need JAWS scripts to make use of the program's features; the program will communicate it's information to JAWS without any other files needing to be installed. This program is also a lot faster than Sound Forge in terms of saving files, etc. It includes features such as changing pitch, reverb, noise reduction (coming in next beta), etc. It can currently save in MP3, WMA, OGG and Real Media formats. More support is coming soon and people will be able to write plug-ins to support other formats if they wish. If you would like to try it out, you can go to http://audiomagic.roachhost.com and download the latest beta version from there. You can read the user's guide and other documentation after you've got the program installed. Documentation will also be available online by the time the final product is released. If you feel any changes need to be made to the documentation, let me know that as well. Hope you all enjoy the program. Hello, I couldn't get the keyboard shortcuts area to display after I pulled down the help menu. I didn't know where to start with Reaper. Re: Sound forge Question about left channel to both speakers
Hello, if all the audio is in the left channel, use the process menu, choose channel convert, and then choose stereo to mono, 100 percent, no faders. It's part of the presets in the box. That will get the job done. If the best of two channels is on the left or the right, and you want to ignore bad or low audio in the other channel, hit tab till the sound comes out of the channel with bad or low audio. Then go to the process menu and choose mute. That will mute only that selected channel. Hit tab till you get back to where the unmuted channel is playing your audio, and then do the steps outlined above. You then get only the good audio from the one good channel, without mixing in bad audio that might be on the other channel. This often happens with old tapes. That's why I brought it up, and thought I'd give you both situations so you could refer back to them at a later time if need be. This comes in handy if you have a tape where the audio only ever comes out the left channel. The right side is just a tape hissing noise, so better not to even have that at all. If you record in mono, then you're getting both left good channel and right empty hissing channel. That's where the muting one channel comes in the best use. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Re: Sound forge Question about left channel to both speakers
But you'd still get the hissing from the mixer itself, regardless of whether that channel is on or not. It still usually makes some kind of noise. I'm a perfectionist, and do archive work sometimes for personal use usually, and so this is what I use to get the best sound, by muting the unused channel. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Re: DbPowerAMP
Hello, if the live tracks are all one show, you don't want to crossfade them, and you don't want to normalize each individual track. Normalizing the whole thing is fine, but doing it for each track changes the volume and breaks the flow of the show. Crossfading is a similar thing, since it affects the quality of the material. I actually haven't tried the cd module. I'll have to look into it. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: transferring music collection to hard drive
Well, I use mp3 at 160 kb. However, if it is possible to tell from your collection, you might want to put any out-of-print cd's into a lossless compression format for archiving. Flac will do very nicely, though you'll have to get the tracks into .wav format first. If you're going to do flac, write in again, and I'll give further instructions. But for most cd's, they'll probably be in print still, so mp3 should do fine. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: n-track - what is it?
Hello, I really haven't found a way to mark sections of a file or delete them, nor to line up sections. I use Sound Forge to mute the parts of tracks I don't want. Perhaps if you e-mailed the author and told him that other blind users are enjoying the program, then he would be willing to implement a build with certain keystrokes. The easiest would be to use the standard Windows selection commands. For instance, to delete everything before the cursor, he could use control shift home and then delete, and control shift end and then delete to delete after the cursor. He is very responsive, so let him know the problems you're having, and see if he will work on them. He's made special builds for me and retained the changes once I told him that they worked, but I think he'd like to hear from someone other than myself in the blind community. Thanks a lot. Re: etree
Hello, ETree is very good. I'm an active member, and provided you are willing to mail out packages and trade live shows with people, this works out well. My personal list is at http://db.etree.org/kb2rza to give you an example, but this isn't the only show listing format. There are a few other ways to display your listings of shows. You can browse existing database entries, but I've found that when you're trying to add a show not currently in the master database, that Internet Explorer comes up with a blank page after you enter the show details, and the show isn't entered. Since people on this list might have trouble mailing out packages, due to waiting on others to address and send out packages, you may need to ask for a little more time, and give a time frame, or require a self-addressed stamped envelope. Or, you could do ETrades, which would be an exchange of files through ftp sites, which you or the trading party might have. The file formats often used are .shn files. All of the tools needed are usually found on the ETree website. This site frowns on mp3 sourced shows, so this is lossless trading. If you store shows on your hard disc, they can take up plenty of space. Another file format is .flak, which is also widely used. If you need help, let me know. If enough people are interested in this live show trading topic, we can continue onlist. It will be on topic if we keep to discussions about the tools used to convert the audio, but once you install them, they are pretty straightforward. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Sony recorder with Dragon Naturally Speaking
Hello, has anyone bought this recorder from either Ann Morris or Independent Living Aids? How do you like it? Is the sound quality 44100 and 16 bits, and how come it comes with Dragon? They don't give a model number on this, so I don't have a way of finding reviews of this product, and you can't return it because it contains software. I'm thinking that if you can download the files from the unit onto the computer, that if it sounds as good as cd quality with their microphone, then this might be faster than listening in realtime to minidiscs. There's a tool to combine .wav or .mp3 files.
Hello, a few weeks ago, Larry asked about how to merge two .wav files which were each side of a cassette. He got several suggestions, and all valid, and these were things I did, like combining the files by the copy and paste method in Sound Forge. However, I'm going to be recieving a large amount of live concert recordings in .shn format, and it will be in individual tracks. I'd use my .shn to .wav converter, but then I'd have the time-consuming task of loading each track into Sound Forge and copying them into one master file for retracking. I hoped there was a better way, and it arrives in the form of a tool which will combine .wav or .mp3 files into one file. It costs $19.95, and lets you join ten times before the demo expires. It's a little tricky to get going, but nothing you can't do if you know how to manipulate your mouse cursor a little bit. It took me about fifteen minutes to get the hang of it's layout. This is just one of the tools available from www.Splitter-Joiner.com Note the hyphen in there. Anyhow, it's worth the $20 I will be paying for it when my audio projects come up, so I thought I'd pass it on for the archives, if not belatedly to Larry's question of three weeks ago. Thanks a lot. Is CD Architect accessible?
Hello, the latest version of Sound Forge, version 8, doesn't appear to be out yet, but when it does come out, it's being bundled with CD Architect. Will this extra program be accessible? It will allow users to burn gapless cd's from the program, respecting the regions you've placed in a file. I have a lot of concerts on my hard disc, all in .wav file format, and marked with region markers for making the track marks. Now when I make a cd, I have to extract the regions into separate .wav files, and sometimes it doesn't exactly line up seamlessly on the audio cd. This will help a great deal if it is accessible. As I said in my review, the cost for upgrading from the 16 bit to the 24 bit is the price difference from $42 to $64, but this new upgrade from version 3 to version 4 is about $25. If you've got a registered version of the program from February of last year or later, it's a free upgrade, but if yours is like the one I registered three years ago, then you'll have to pay the fee. N-Track problems are resolved
Hello, I've been working with the author of N-Track, the multi-track software, and he has made the latest build of the program accessible once more. To get the menus to speak, uncheck the icons in menus box in the options settings. Also, by default, the program recorded two files at a time for use with two sound cards. If you only have one sound card, and wished to record in stereo, the button wasn't accessible, and he had to modify the configuration file and send that to me, but he has fixed this, and now control alt f4 opens the settings which cannot otherwise be accessed. Re: A Soundforge Question
Hello, use the extract options from the file menu, with letter E as the shortcut key. Go through the box and check the one that says put regions in the file, and let it extract the whole cd into a file. Then you can work with it until it's where you want it, and then make cd's from the modified file. Sound Forge has a track at once burning program, so for live cd's, or for anything you don't want to have a two-second gap in, use something else to burn the cd. You'll have to cut the files into regions for separate .wav files. Let me know if you need more info on how to do this. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? If Flavio, the author, doesn't have the old versions which he can post to his web site, then I'll send you the older version with his tweaked config file which gets rid of another obstacle for the blind. I would definitely get a hold of Flavio, because if you go with another multi-track program, then Flavio will not be made aware of the problems you are having. The only reason I don't get a hold of him myself is because I'm happy with my older version, and I wouldn't know how to describe all of the problems you're having, so I'm leaving it up to you. But please contact him, so he is aware of the problems. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: trouble with ntrack studio.
Well what happens after eight tracks? If it's something that can't be avoided, then you could mix down what you have and add to that. There's a check box that says to decrease volume when tracks are added. I haven't figured out why you would want it to do that though. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Hello, I think the easiest way to access the menus when first starting the program is to hit 0 on the number row to open the recording box. Just escape out of it for now, and the menus should then appear. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: trouble with ntrack studio.
Hmm. This depends then on what version you're running I guess. I didn't upgrade to version 4, as the version 3 build I'm using is good enough for what I need, so maybe things have changed. Unfortunately then, I can't help with it, and my Main Menu review will not help you until you can get into the menus. Write Flavio, the program author, and ask him what changes you have made. He's familiar with my audio review, and with the fact that I am blind, so if you let him know your troubles, maybe he can give pointers on how to access it with the keyboard, if indeed he has changed something around. Let him know that I do not have the latest version of the program, so I won't be able to help. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. Re: multi-track programs.
Hello, well actually Sound Forge doesn't do multi-track recording. You'll want to try N-Track, from www.NTrack.com or hear my main menu review of the program from www.ACBRadio.org in the on demand section, then under Main Menu. Search for my name down the page and click on the show date, and use the B key in Winamp to skip to the segment. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Re: Deleting Regions in Sound Forge - Can it Be Done?
Hello, please respond on list, as I believe others will want the answer as well. When you're going through the file putting markers in, you can hit alt shift m if you're using the Snowman's scripts to delete a marker. Sometimes this doesn't work, so you'll have to undo that, but sometimes the undo is way far back. Once the regions are in the file and the file is saved, I've not been able to make changes to them. I have one file with a double region at the starting point of a file, so that it makes one region .wav file as a blank file of 0 seconds, and the rest of the .wav files are the concert split into the tracks. I'd like to be able to delete the regions, but when following the directions you've posted, after hitting alt 3, Jaws just says playlist, and I don't know what to do. I close that window and look at the playlist/cutlist menu, and delete/cut regions is unavailable. Please explain how this can be done with no sight using screen readers, if it is possible. Re: Delta soundcard question
Hello, cd quality sound is 16 bit, and 44100 samples. If you're recording in 24 bit at 96 khz, the higher end audio will not be accepted by the lower cd-quality. Therefore, in order to retain the 24/96 parameters, you may have to use DVD audio. I'm not exactly sure about this, but there are detailed instructions and tips if you search on google for the FAQ on taping with laptops. A sound card with cd-quality sound will do fine, but I have no experience with recording digitally. I just plug a cord into the sound card with my source material coming into the line in port on the sound card from the cord. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Hello, this is fine since I have one already, but if they fail to update us with the newest channels, then this will be a problem. If things become any different, to where I can't enjoy the service, I will discontinue it. I will not do this out of anger at XM, for whom I have none, but I will simply not be able to tell what I'm listening to, and that's important, as I listen to a lot of music which is unfamiliar, and would like to buy it if I enjoy it. Hello, try RealWavRecorder. This program will take a .ram file and play it straight through, converting it into a .wav file.
