Re: Problems Playing WMV and MOV Files

Hi. I tend to download the programs from the BBC to my phone for later
viewing. I had installed the BBCI player to my phone and it's very
accessible. You have the choice of streeming the recording or downloading it
for later viewing. Now if every TV station other than the BBC offered this
free service then I wouldn't even have a TV and the TV License wouldn't need
to be renewed.

Victoria, I was refering to the BBC's Iplayer TV catch up streams which I
doubt are available outside of the UK.

You do need a pretty fast connection to sustain TV streaming, particularly
at
the high definition rate which approaches broadcast quality here in the
uK.

Caroline, I omitted to say there is something called Quicktime
Alternative

which is supposed to make life easier for screen reader users, though it
wasn't developped specially for us. I think it allows you to play
material
outside of the browser rather than the ebbeding imposed by web designers
when
using Quictime. there is a Wiki on Quicktime Alternative should you want
to
follow that up, but you seem to be getting along with QT.

Must admit it's ages since I sued the IPlayer downloader. I just stream
TV
programmes now. Often wondered if it's possible to record the video as
well
as the sound while watching, but not looked into that.

Do let us know if you have success getting downloaded programmes to play
in WMP.

as
the WMV files still stubbornly refuse to play. I've read through the
help

on the iPlayer site but it didn't address the problem I have. I think no
DRM licences are being downloaded although WMP is set to allow them. It
is
all rather frustrating, but at least I have found a workaround. As you
say,
QuickTime is not the most accessible player ever invented, but I have
found
enough keystrokes to make it usable.

I don't think my situation was helped by me still having the old iPlayer
Download Manager instead of the newer version. That just shows how long
it
is since I last tried to download anything from the iPlayer. Strangely
enough it didn't even prompt me that I still had an obsolete version of
the
downloader on my PC and I only found out about it from the article you
posted and then the iPlayer help.

Definitely a work in progress.

Caroline, I'm not surprised the Beeb isn't making it easy to play
downloaded
files in other media players because, after all, the licence you're
granted
to
play these does in the normal way of playing them expire in 28 days or
something like that.

I wonder though if there is an extra DRM module or plug-in for Windows
Media
Player that would allow you to play these programs in WMP. The BBC
itself

might be prepared to answer this question.

As an aside I'm rather surprised the Beeb hasn't closed the seeming loop
hole
where people are downloading radio programmes as that's not what is
supposed
to happen. there agreement with copyright holders is for 7 days
streaming

availability after a programme goes out. Still, a bit off the subject I

Hope you get an answer to this Caroline and I see you've posted this

Access-UK so who knows, maybe an answer will yet surface there.

Hi. There is a radio button with in the program in which you select after
downloading. The option is to convert and then you select your file. Once
that is done then select the format you want to convert to from the drop
down box. When ready select ok and then confirm quality of vidwo. High,
medium and low are the options. This option doesn't seem to be accessible
when using Jaws or System Access so I hit ok to continue anyway. I have
noticed that with the 2.5 version of the youtube downloader it converts the

Lauren,

From reading through the text version of the manual that Verizon posted
online, it seems to be a fully functional version of Talks for Windows
Mobile, and it would probably do everything you want, including text
messaging, email and Internet. However, if you look at the answer to
question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear
the word nontransferable in the answer about the cost. This makes me
think that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and
cannot be transferred to another phone later.

Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a
new phone when a better one comes along.

If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for
Blackberry to be released by Humanware. They say it will be released
soon, but they don't say when, and they don't give a price. They say it
will support all of the core Blackberry applications. This is the only
Blackberry model they mention specifically in the information on their
web site.

Good morning List,

Here is the promised information.

A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully
accessible to blind people. This phone was from Verizon and contained
the Talks program. The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech
program cost $249 with a 2 year contract. According to Verizon, the
Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this. Of course
I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all
it had to offer. I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and
compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an
alarm

or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't
happen.

I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a
few

issues. It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks
program. This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of
all

the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of
phones and different speech programs. Through my searching, I
discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone
was not the fully functioning version of the program.

I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after
hearing of a program called: Mobile Speaks. This program can be used
on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's. It
works
with several different service providers and costs about $300.00. I
was

able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile
Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to
offer. This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a
different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from
Verizon. I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new
phone.

Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile
Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work

I have been using a NC10 from Samsung for about a week. Our Samsung has
given us a 30 day evaluation unit to use. Actually, it has a very nice
keyboard, and it is just a slight bit bigger than the MSI Wind keyboard.
I know several people who have baught or are going to be buying the
Samsung, and two things that those people usually emntion is the nice
keyboard and over 7 hours of use on a charge of the battery.

I really like my MSI Wind, and it has some great features, including a
turbo mode that takes the speed to 2.0 GHZ. But, the best I have been
able to get with the MSI on battery life is a little over 5 hours. That
isn't bad, but 7 hours is fantastic.

This message was composed on a MSI Wind netbook.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96% keyboard

.3gp is the standard use by the NLS to record talking books and
magazines. It is also used by the Victor Stream Reader to record your own
personal notes. If you have the Victor Stream it comes with a CD
containing companion software that will convert .3pg files into .wav and
from there you can play them or convert them to .mp3 or .ogg etc.

Re: 3gp

2009-01-30 Thread Saqib
Yeah they are video files for phones. They are low resolution files so the
picture quality is not as crisp as an MP4 file. A film converted to 3GP is
around 150MB where it can be 2 to 3 GB if converted to MP4.

Hi Saqib,

Thanks for that info. As I said in another reply, I'm copying all audio
files to the library in Windows Media Player, and then I will try and burn
the two that I need to Audio CD, although, if you could clarify the
location

of the directory you referred to that would be helpful.

Subject: problems burning .wma files to CDR disks

Hi all,

I've just joined this list in order to see if any members can assist me in
solving the following problem.

I'm using a computer running windows XP as its OS which is also loaded
with

Office XP and Supernova Access Software.

I am trying to burn files which have been downloaded to the computer on to
CDS to play in a normal CD player. I thought the problem was that I was
writing the files to CDRW disks, so I went out and purchased some CDR
disks.

However before that, I had tried to burn files onto CDRW disks using a
trial
of Nero burning Rom version 9 and the files had reached the disks
although,

at that time I was not certain that I was using the wrong disks. When I
went to purchase Nero 9, the local PC world only had Roxio Easy Media
Creator 10 in stock, so I have purchased that instead. However, even
though
I have converted the files I wish to put onto CDs from .MP3 to .WMA I
can't
seem to get them to burn to CDR, when as I said, they used to be able to
be

written to CDRW but I couldn't play them on a standard CD player.

If anyone can work out what I am doing wrong please could you explain.
Thank you in advance for any help, and please note that the files I wish
to

put on CD are files publicly available from the website of the church I
attend, and I am recording them with the permission of members of the
church

purely for personal use.

Re: Itunes 8 now accessible

2008-09-11 Thread Saqib
Hi Jonathan. We both have the same phone. I have defined a Key to bring up
the music menu. When you put music or podcasts on the phone you can also
just Take the memmorycard out of the phone and insert it in to your card
adaptor and then pop it in to your laptop. I prefer this method of putting
music on to a phone. The thing with Apple you have to go to the trouble of
converting music in to the player's code and then if the player is
accessible you can select and play music of your choice. Did you enjoy your
trip to Sight Village in July?

Saqib, I completely agree with you. I have no need for a Nano when I have
 an
N82. But I think the reason why iPods and other stand-alone playback
 devices
are so big in North America is that they have nowhere near a strong a
smartphone culture as Europe, Asia and other places.

music from your phone or preferred MP3 device. It's taken Apple so long to

was sod the blind and who ever can't access our devices or software. It's
good that Apple are getting their head around the accessibility factor but

Hi Stephen, I have not played with one so am going based on what I've
 read,
but it appears that what happens is that when your nano is connected to
 your
PC or Mac, a scan is made for all albums and songs on your nano. Using
 your
default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files
are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to
your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you
 can
hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real
 text
to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox
 gave
us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless.

 off
the TTS you are running and loads it on to the Nano, or am I way off.

Does the Nano require you to install software to have speech?

Alex and all, the new iPod Nanos are sort of accessible but do not use
 text
to speech. They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years,
 where
they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that
 live
on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs.

In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of
Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able
 to
work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for
 iTunes
in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today
 and
am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others.
Apple have done a good job here.

Hello there,
You can simply go to the file folder of each rip and select individual
songs. Then, copy and drag over to CD drive.Once you've moved all the songs
you want, tab over once, followed by down arrow to 'burn to disc.' That
should then open WMP and you may have to tab over and hit the ‘start burn’
button.
HTH!
Once you’ve put all song files there, tab over once, and then arrow down to
burn

I'd first try mp3 and txt for extensions. P.S. be sure to make a copy
 first.

A friend of mine downloaded a sound clip from the Dr Who site's text only
version and that one's a strange beast as well, she couldn't open it and
 she
sent it to me, when I try to open it I get told that the file format's not
reognized and windows needs to access the net to find out what to open it
 with, very very strange!!

Subject: An audio file with no extention and isn't recognised

Hi everyone. I have a problem converting a file I have. It was sent to
 me
as an attachment from a friend who in turn received it from some one
 else.
It is a recording from a radio programme. My problem is, it is 2.7mg in
size and I wanted to compress it further in order to embed it and send it
on. However, when I tried to use Gold wave, it didn't recognize the file
and didn't list it on the list of audio files in my document folder. I
tried Sound Taxi but again, it didn't appear in the list of files. I can
play the file with WMA but it says that it doesn't recognise the file
 type
but may be able to play it anyway and do I want it to try. I said yes
 and
it did. It won't play in reel player or any other player I have except
 WMA
but with the proviso above. I looked at the properties and it said the
 file
type was file but nothing else. I turned on the extensions but
 although
all other files had an extension, this file did not, yet it is an audio
 file
as I can listen to it but can do nothing else with it. If anyone has any
idea what file type it is and how I can get into it to edit it, I would
 be
 appreciative. Many thanks. Walter.

Wow, that really does sound neat. How does it work- do you press a button
 to
copy and it coppies the cd to another cd- or does it have some sort of
 hard
 drive?

I just picked up a sony at crutchfield for !299. It is a 5 disc cd

cheaper. My equipment is sony however and I just wanted it to match
 the rest of my equipment.

Re: computer and bluetooth headphones

2008-05-09 Thread Saqib
Kathy if these bluetooth headphones are for PC or audio equipment then you
need to plug the bluetooth base 3.5 jack in to your headphone socket on your
PC. Make sure the base is plugged in at the mains. On some base units there
is a button you switch on to line 1 or line 2 . Make sure you have batteries
in your headphones. I know this sounds obvious but some times we just forget
the most basic things time to time. I have Philips headphones where I have
turned the switch to line 1 on the base and the headphones I can't think of
anything else. You might want to try ordinary headphones in the same socket
if they work then the problem lies with the bluetooth base or headphones.

Re: DAB Radios

2008-05-05 Thread Saqib
Hi. DAB radios are digital radios. A normal radio would pick up stations
vior analog signals. A digital radio would pick up stations vior digital
transmission. You would get all the channels which are broadcasted on
satellite and cable. here. The sound is crystal clear with no interference.
Most of these radios have an option where you can switch to FM mode to
listen to local channels.

Don't know about the best place, but knowing you live near Birmingham
I'd say try Richer Sounds or Super-Fi in Smallbrook Ringlway.

Mind you, if you are doing a limited amount of CD copying then as you've
obviously got a computer using that might be more economical.

 Cheers,
 Ray.
