When I put the track number at the beginning of the file name it worked ok. The files displayed in the right order when looking at them in Windows because Windows has no problems with long file names. This may be worth trying. Also I read a review of the Zen Stone which said that it does not always resume play from where you stopped. If I go on vacation, like a cruise, I'd still have to bring my laptop just to recharge my Creative Zen Stone. If you're comparing it to something which takes batteries then I guess it would be more inconvenient, when the battery runs down, you have to tether yourself to an electrical outlet or a USB port while it's charging, but if it took batteries, you could just pop a fresh battery in and go. I guess for the price, you could always buy two! OK never mind, you're right, I can see where it would be a bit nor inconvenient! I'm still asking for one for Father's Day though! I have the Creative MuVo with 128M of memory, and having something that's supposed to be just as easy to use, but with 1GB of memory is just too appealing. If this is true; then why couldn't the same type program be on a notebook or laptop computer? What is the difference? I hear some notebooks talk of having Windows Mobile operating system on it. If this program could fit on a notebook, then we could just use bluetooth to access it on a bus or in a car--couldn't we? If not, then why not. Clicking through the menu on your iPod demands a significant amount of visual attention, which can be a hassle (while jogging) and even dangerous (while driving). But engineers at the University of Toronto and Microsoft Research are working on software that could make it possible to navigate the menus of gadgets that use circular touch pads, like the iPod, without looking at them--only audio cues would be used. The researchers have designed an auditory menu technique--called earPod--that provides audio feedback when a person drags his or her finger around the touch pad. Although it's not ready to replace the expansive menus on real iPods, the results are encouraging, says Patrick Baudisch, a research scientist at Microsoft Research, in Seattle, who worked on the project. LINK: http://www.patrickbaudisch.com/ Within 30 minutes of beginning to use the technology, people can navigate two levels of earPod menus faster than traditional visual menus, and just as accurately. Requiring constant visual attention while using a PC is reasonable, says Baudisch, but if you're using an iPod on the road, [constant visual attention] is unreasonable. In addition to giving people back their eyes, he says, audio menus could help gadgets save battery life by not wasting energy on a screen, and they could add functions to the screen-free devices such as the iPod shuffle. The idea of using audio menus isn't new. Auditory interfaces can, after all, be found in touch-tone phone menus and in various assisted technologies for seeing-impaired users. But historically, handheld consumer gadgets haven't widely used audio menus. There are a few reasons for this, says Bruce Walker, professor in the school of psychology and college of computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. LINK: http://sonify.psych.gatech.edu/~walkerb/ One reason, he says, is that audio hardware and software have been resource intensive, requiring significant amounts of computation and energy. In addition, audio software has been difficult to program. But computing power is becoming cheaper, and there is an increasing need to find different ways to interact with handheld devices, says Walker. Within the past 10 years, he says, the ubiquity of mobile devices with small displays has made us all visually impaired. Currently there are only a handful of researchers who are systematically looking at ways to make better audio interfaces for various devices, but Walker expects the ranks to grow in the coming years. The next level contained eight examples of these items. I love FM and truly hate DAB here in the UK! BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Radio stations face analogue axe BBC NEWS Radio stations face analogue axe Traditional analogue radio stations could be facing extinction under proposals put forward by the communications regulator Ofcom. It is suggesting a review of AM stations in 2009 and of FM services in 2012, or when digital use accounts for 50% of the total, whichever is sooner. It also wants analogue licences, up for renewal from 2009, to be extended - but with a two-year notice of termination. Ofcom says the analogue bandwidth taken up by radio could be put to better use. Costs and benefits The regulator is predicting 90% of all radio listening will be via digital platforms by 2017 and is launching a consultation on how best to use the analogue signal. Current licences are set to expire between 2009 and 2027, depending on the date of issue. An Ofcom spokesman said: There is no date set for switching off analogue radio signals but with the increased use of digital we need flexibility in the spectrum. Any such changes are a matter for government and parliament but they may wish to consider how to allow Ofcom to achieve common end-dates for all FM and AM licences. It added: Any reviews would include a full assessment of the costs and benefits, taking into account the needs of consumers, including the most vulnerable members of society. Ofcom believes the freed-up spectrum could be used for mobile television, more digital radio, more community radio services or other new technologies. The consultation will end in June. Some people didn't like Howard Stern coming over their favorite religious station as an example. Many of the newer XM portables are using touch screens these days which aren't accessible for us! Mr. Stewart then said it's about time for XM receivers to have audio feedback or prompts for those who cannot see the screen. Re: Why the iPod is losing its cool
with regard to that, that article is horidly out of date, that information came out last spring, and apple since investigated and inforced better working condissions oin the factory, which is one thing i must give them credit for, as apple has been notably proactive on employee rights. A 50 hour work week maximum has been inforced with a requirement of 2 days off a week, (10 hour days) with breaks. I'm no supporter of the ipod, but i feel its important to give credit where its due when it comes to these issues. tj - Original Message - From: Nick G [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 2:39 PM Subject: Re: Why the iPod is losing its cool Death to the IPod, thank you very much...That's one device I really hate, and the thing about using chinese workers in those conditions...well...May explain, for instance, why IPod Nanos break in half. - Original Message - From: Kelly Pierce [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 1:09 PM Subject: Why the iPod is losing its cool The iPod lost its cool for me when I read the Sunday Mirror expose a few weeks ago. The story told of a place it called Ipod city where 200,000 people work and live with factories, dormitories, restaurants, grocers, and health clinics. It even has its own transit system. The article said workers for Apple assemble iPods by hand standing up at tables for 14 hours a day. They are paid much less then other factory workers in China. If they try to stretch their arms or legs after many hours of standing nearly still, Apple's minders force them to do push ups and humiliate them in front of other workers. The offending worker is then slapped with mandatory overtime, toiling until they virtually collapse from exhaustion and stress. How cool is that? Kelly The Observer [UK] Sunday September 10, 2006 Why the iPod is losing its cool Apple has added ever more extras to its digital music-player in a bid to stem falling sales. But fears are rising that the device is now too common to be cutting edge David Smith, technology correspondent The Mermaid, Puddle Dock, is not the first place you might go in search of the cool and cutting edge. That will not stop an expectant crowd gathering at the conference centre in London's Blackfriars this week for a live satellite broadcast from San Francisco that could make or break one of the consumer icons of the Western world. The iPod, the digital music player beloved of everyone from Coldplay's Chris Martin to President George Bush, is in danger of losing its sheen. Sales are declining at an unprecedented rate. Industry experts talk of a 'backlash' and of the iPod 'wilting away before our eyes'. Most disastrously, Apple's signature pocket device with white earphones may simply have become too common to be cool. On Tuesday the eyes of iPod-lovers the world over will be on Steve Jobs, the co-founder and chief executive of Apple, when he seeks to allay fears that it could follow Sony's tape-playing Walkman into the recycling bin of history. Jobs is widely expected to announce the most ambitious iPod service yet - the sale of feature-length films via the internet for viewing on the devices, which may receive an expanded 'widescreen' and improved storage capacity. If downloading movies from a computer to an iPod proves even half as revolutionary as it did for music, the multibillion-pound DVD industry could be quaking. There are rumours that Jobs will also announce a long expected 'iPhone', combining the music function and sleek style of an iPod with a mobile phone. Industry-watchers warn that the iPod could soon be regarded by teenage cynics as their 'parents' player' because a mass-market product rarely equates with edgy fashionability. Although it has sold nearly 60 million actual iPods and a billion downloaded songs worldwide, cracks have begun to appear in the edifice. The Zandl Group, a New York-based trends forecaster which regularly interviews a panel of 3,000 consumers aged 25-35, recently picked up its first significant criticisms. 'The iPod is far and away the most popular tech gadget with our panellists - however, for the first time we are hearing negative feedback about the iPod from some panellists,' said the organisation's spokeswoman, Carla Avruch. 'Panellists cite that the batteries are not replaceable, so when they die the entire player must be replaced,' she said. 'We have heard from some conspiracy theorists that the batteries are made to die soon after the warranty ends. 'Other complaints are that iTunes [Apple's online music store] is overpriced and the format is not easily transferred on to other players. In our ethnography interviews, some long-time iPod-users told us that they have stopped updating their iPods because it's too much work, while other consumers who had bought iPods more recently had not even

RE: realtek sound card
Realtech is by my unerstanding a cgipset not a card onto itrelf. As such the board manufactorer can use it in a number of ways. I havent seen it used in such a high end interface. -- original message -- Subject:realtek sound card From: Rachel D Keyte [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: August 06th 2006 10:42 am Hi all, Please bear with me here. I am not technical! I just bought a new pentium4 computer and it has onboard a realtek sound card. I'd never heard of this before, and don't know much about it. I just wondered if anyone else has one of these and could get back to me? The volume control works differently to what I'm use too, eg. (when ajusting playback, in properties, you click on ajust volume for realtek HD audio output and for recording, there is realtek HD digital input or just realtek HD input and they're the three mixing devices in volume control. When I click on the plain HD input thing, I get recording volume, then all these other checkboxes for Mic, vidio, CD, line in, etc (which can all be selected together or not), but no actual individual volumes for any of them. all I get is mute checkboxes. However, when I go to ajust the realtek digital input I just get an option for spdif which i have no idea what that is. and jaws doesn't speak at all in this single control unless I go into jaws cursor. I only then have the option to mute or unmute it. (these are the only options I get even when I go to select the options I want to show up in those mixer devices). The playback (or realtek output does actually have individual volume controls but no mic option (like I'm use too). This card has surround sound capabilities, but I have got a new 2.5 (I think it's referred to as) system. When I unplug and plug in jacks, an information message tells me this and then I have to select which device I just plugged in (whether it be headphones, microphone,) etc. How come it does this? Can I possibly turn this off and have it automatically detect them? Sorry all for the ramble. I'm just not use to this and I want to go back to being simple! Lol Oh I did try and research this on the net but didn't find out much. Thanks for any help or advice. Cheers! :) -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2006 9:36 PM Subject: Panasonic and Accessibility Hi all. I hope this isn't off topic, but earlier, I received some information on this list about Panasonic's liaison for accessibility, Robert Wenner! But as of April 1, another person has taken over this role. I'm forwarding a message that he sent to me, regarding DVD recorders and DVR's, and accessibility! Gary, I took over Panasonic's Accessibility Program from Robert Wegner effective April 1, 2006. Regarding your inquiry Panasonic does not offer Tivo. Panasonic does offer DVD recorders with TV Guide Electronic Program Guides (EPG) for ease of programming similar to Tivo, but, without the monthly Tivo fee. Panasonic also offers DVD recorders with or without hard drives. Cable DVRs can not be connected to a Panasonic DVD recorder. All Panasonic DVD recorders allow simultaneous record and play, however, you can only record one program at a time, since only one TV tuner is included. I hope I have answered all of your questions? If not please advise? I haven't contacted you in a while. I'm glad that Panasonic is dedicated toward making things accessible for blind people. A friend of mine has a competitor's DVD recorder with a built-in harddrive. I believe it's a Humax, out of Korea. It has the Tevo system built into it. It sounds like that might be a good system, but I'm wondering if Panasonic has something like this built into their DVD/DVR recorders. It sounds like a neat way for folks to program their shows they want to record on their DVR, and copy things to DVD! I know that some cable providers like Comcast have a DVR built into their cable boxes, and I'm wondering if something like that could be accessed with your product. I think that for some, they're able to program their Tevo's through their computers. That would be great for a blind person who uses a screenreader, if their screenreaders can read the messages that are necessary to go to an edit field where they can program the shows they want to watch. With your Panasonic DVD/DVR recorders, can a person record more than one show at a time? This is something I'm asking about, just out of curiosity. Flash cards run about 70 dollars in Canada, but probably could be purchased much cheaper else where. The flash cards come in a hard plastic case large enough to put a Braille number on it. You could organize your flash cards and also keep Braille index cards with corresponding numbers. If I had my druthers flash would be the way to go. A little on the expensive side, but well worth it, as with these devices there is no moving mechanical parts that can wear out. I also looked at a Sony 20 gig model. A little on the expensive side. interestingly enough the station i currently work at my school uses what i a hybrid system of editing material called a Shortcut. Its a unit with function buttons and a wheel to controle your space in the file. We have it hooked in and out to a board, and record to it edit then outpout to minidisc when doing productions or recording. its a pretty nice system once you memorize the key layout, with minimal need for screen support, though it does help. The only work around that I can think of is to make use of two computers. One computer for the production and programming elements using screen reading software. Once you have recorded your program, you can then send the file to your host computer that would go directly to air. The work around that we would be looking for would be similar to that of call centers in that only the operator would hear the prompts from the screen reader. In this case I can only assume that they must be using multi channel sound cards and somehow splitting the different audio feeds. . I find that what is lacking with radio automation software is the amount of information on the screen. Some software programs are so detailed that they would require a lot of information from a screen reader program, and there are other programs that simply do not prvide enough information for the operator. Unfortunately at this point in time it is basically a visual thing. I do have some functional vision, but would like to have some audio prompts simply as a guide as there are simply too many functions that can be overlooked with out being prompted. The tune tracker software package was designed with a broadcaster in mind, as it has functioning buttons that resemble buttons on a cart machine, tape player or CD player. It even has VU meters that look like the real thing. You would be hard pressed to find a radio station these days that didn't operate with out radio automation software. People who are blind or visually impaired are simply put at a disadvantage. I have worked with Dallet radio automation software and found it to be very user friendly. I used it on a computer with a large monitor along with Zoomtext. I have no idea how it would react with a screen reader. All that I can say is that electronic editing is much better than using a razor blade and editing tape. Don't want to go back to those days ever again. - Original Message - From: Brent Harding [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. I see the touch screen interface not working for obvious reasons. I wonder how hard the artist and title info are to obtain using speech, and also operating the other controls of the software? I wonder how one would get the screen reader redirected to a cue channel where only the operator hears it? I assume each channel off the system is it's own physical sound card so have windows default be for that purpose. Maybe radio sound cards are multichannel with multiple outputs that software can address individually, I wish I could figure out how on my turtle beach to force jaws to another of the 3 outputs that would then have nothing else on it. I hope this tune tracker thing can be made to work. . It sure would be nice to see something that is workable. - Original Message - From: Bob Seed [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. I have yet to find a fully accessible music scheduler that will tell you everything that is going on on the screen from song placement in the lineup to song title and artist. Believe me I have looked at a number of radio automation software packages, and there simply isn't a package out there that I could find that will meet all of our needs. Doris New Winamp Security Vulnerability Tech News: Nullsoft has just released an update to Winamp aimed at fixing a serious security vulnerability that opened up systems to remote attack. The company posted version 5.13 of the media player online on Monday after Secunia and other security companies issued alerts about the problem. Malicious software exploiting the extremely critical flaw was already circulating on the Internet, according to Secunia's advisory. A security researcher by the nickname of Kozan discovered the flaw in the Winamp 5.12 that can be exploited to compromise a user's system. Proof of concept code was published last Sunday. An attacker could exploit the flaw through a specially crafted playlist file. Upon opening the file, the flaw results in a buffer overflow, allowing the attacker to launch applications and take over control of a system. The vulnerability effectively allows the attacker to turn the computer into a zombie system or steal data from the system's hard drive. Even though the security company gave the vulnerability its highest rating for software threats, it noted that the number of people who use Winamp has declined over the years, so the scope of the problem is not as large as it once might have been. Winamp used to be the world's most popular MP3 player and is still quite popular, but as Windows Media Player has gotten better, some users have migrated over, said Thomas Kristensen, Secunia's chief technology officer, to CNETnews.com. We aren't aware of any systems that have been compromised yet, but it's likely to happen since there's exploit code out, Kristensen said. Well, as you can plainly see, nothing is safe anymore. Not even your music player. So, if you want to keep your system safe, go to www.winamp.com/player/ and get the latest Winamp version. Do you know what it would be in U.S. dollars? Also, what are the prices for the cards which go in it? If we're talking about the Edirol R09 which isn't out yet, it seems to have a going price of $399. I don't know if that's a street price or not, I think it's MSRP, actually, so it will probably end up being cheaper. I got my Edirol R-1 for that price, and this is supposed to be cheaper than the R1 since it's a more slim-line design with less bulk. As for the SD cards, check mwave or newegg for good prices. Mwave seems to have 2GB SD cards starting at around $115, 1GB starting at $48, and smaller cards for cheaper. At least for the under 2Gb mark, sd seems to be cheaper than compact flash, which the R1 uses, but they're around the same price for 2GB. -- Good Sunday, -- Patrick Perdue (MCP, CNA) KE4DYI Greensboro, NC website: http://www.pdaudio.net home: +1(828)221-2971 Mobile hone and SMS: +1(336)509-5583 e-mail and .net messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] skype: Borris For anything related to the yamaha motif line of keyboards and modules, subscribe to the motif-help mailing list by sending a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. Music sounds better as recorded, with some equalization and automatic gain control, but I'm not fond of the added echo. A few systems I heard at stores automatically add enough compression to things that radio at all sounds bad, probably sounds fine for other sources, didn't have a CD around when I checked stuff out or the knowledge of what the manufacturers actually call it to find where the setting is controlled. When I returned my T30, I happened to get a nice lady who was willing to check in the back room for me and that resulted in the 899 I wouldn't have had if I would have just trusted the first person I spoke with on the phone who said they didn't have any remaining in stock. Just a thought. Sometimes, just a tad of persistence really can pay off big. Of course, since the model has been discontinued, it may be extremely likely that no local stores have any in stock. If you're sufficiently adventurous, you may want to check Ebay, maybe overstock.com, etc. There is, for example, an iRiver IFP 899 available at overstock.com for $154. You can't see them as another drive in windows explorer so that you can copy folders to it. I would have bought a zen instantly if it wasn't for the software interface. Another exciting development is that the folks at rockbox.org is working on alternative firmware that may actually give the player a speech interface. Re: looking for a portable MP3 player but not a walkman type
hey my best suggestion is a standard mp3 player with some portable speaks tj - Original Message - From: joanne [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pc-audio pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2005 7:21 AM Subject: looking for a portable MP3 player but not a walkman type I know the subject of MP3 players has come up but not having the need for one I don't know if this particular type of player has been discussed. A blind friend wants an MP3 player but one with its own speakers in it and not one like a walkman that would always require the wearing of headphones. He's wanting one that's a little bigger and that he can play his CD's and/or MP3's while working in his shop--something designed like the ghetto blasters as they were called. I have a Bose system but I think he's wanting something that can be battery-powered or plugged into the wall, and my Bose only runs off electricity. Does anyone know of a good MP3 player with accessible buttons, and if you also know an approximate price range will you let me know that as well?
