An Audacity Problem

2011-11-25 Thread Dave Trevino
Hi everybody,

I'm a new kid on the block.

I've downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 hoping for a free usable multitrack recording
program. I've run the output from a Zoom H D8 to the line_in jack of my sound
card and am bringing a mike through the H d8. . My single track recording
efforts went okay, but when I started adding tracks on the computer, suddenly
the production sounded like it was being played through three or four feet of
galvanized pipe. Is it a phasing problem? Is there a setting I need to
change? Would a later version of the program help[? Thanks for any advice.

Re: An Audacity Problem

2011-11-26 Thread David Bailes
Hi Dave,
the 1.3.13 beta version of audacity is much more accessible than 1.2.6 version
and is reasonably stable. In addtion there's a guide for jaws users for this
version, which can also be used by users of window-eyes and nvda. It's
available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.13-Guide.html
I'm not sure what's causing the galvanized pipe effect, but it might be a
latency problem. If you record additional tracks whilst listening to existing
tracks, there are delays in audacity which cause the tracks not to be in sync.
Audacity can automatically correct for this if the amount of latency is know.
The recording section in the above guide covers the various options for
recording, and also includes a method for measuring the latency. An alternative
to that method would be just to time shift tracks, and find the latency by a
sort of trial and error. Time shifting of tracks is covered in the more
advanced editing section of the guide.
David.

Hello there, would this Gold Wave program work better for the blind than
Audacity?
Also, I run XP-home with jaws 8 and I read that Audacity 1.3 or is it
3.13 but the latest beta version works best...but will it work with my
XP-home? If the Gold Wave is easier and better access for the blind, I'm
willing to pay but need to know if it is better. I do not do a lot of
editing, only copying over from cassett to PC and then into an MP3 file.
Thanks out there!

Hi. Well if you're not having a lot of issues with audassity than stick with
it. All you r doing is recording, making some slight adjustments, i'd
imagine, and saving the files. Yes goldwave can do this for you, but for
what your doing its not necissary
There are several audassity users here and the links given are great

Re: An Audacity Problem

2011-11-27 Thread David Tanner
So, does anyone know if there is an Audacity tutorial? I know just enough
about it to be dangerous. I have looked at the documentation for using it
with Jaws, but for some reason I can't get it through my head how to move
the cursor and mark a track so I can delete a short portion that I do not
want in the recording.

I use Sound Forge, and Studio Recorder all the time and they seem so much
easier to use. But, I would like to learn Audacity because I occasionally
have a client ask me about it, and I have discovered from the little I have
used it that it really is a pretty good sound editor.

I use goldwave to do my file splitting, never have figured it out in
audacity. and it's 50 bucks, but that's a one time fee, and I know
audacity is free, I just happen to use goldwave on a daily basis so it
was worth that fee for me. just my two cents.

Hi David,
have you tried using the [ and ] keys during playback to mark the start and end

Could you be more specific about what you're getting stuck on?
In addtion to this list, there's also an audacity4blind list - details can be
found in the help sub-section of the introduction section of the jaws guide to
audacity.

best wishes,

I am sure Sound Forge will do what you want, but Audacity should have no
problem doing that too, and Audacity is free. On the other hand, the Studio
version of Sound Forge will cost somewhere between $50 and $100. I have not
seen a recent price on Sound Forge Studio, but the last I knew it was around
$50. You could also get the job done well with Goldwave.
