WMKV's podcasts must be grabbed with iTunes and cannot be subscribed with
any other podcatcher.
There are extensive archives for the Tuesday Computer Talk show you
mentioned and, using iTunes, was able to grab a whole bunch of them.
The difficulty, at this stage, seems that one has to use WE7's mouse keys
in iTunes for this and a lot of it is hit and miss at this stage.
This, I am certain, will be dealt with either on the iTunes side or
through scripting.
With ITunes and screen readers being a new marriage, time and patience
both in the program's use and getting these issues ironed out is required.
But yes, archives using iTunes can be grabbed most definitely; and this
appears to be a worthwhile listen.

Mike,

Yes, the show is a very fine one. The topics are varied, and some shows
are of more interest than others. As I said, it was originally geared
to the senior, potentially slightly intimidated computer user, so
sometimes the treatment is very simplistic. These guys are not computer
pros, but folks who use the computer in their everyday lives.

As an aside, if you listen to enough of them you'll probably hear me,
Dave, or both of us. We actually visited WMKV last July as we were in
Louisville for the ACB convention, taking a bus up and back to meet them
in Cincinnati.

Having said all this, let me assure all that I receive no money for
plugging the station or their offerings. I just believe in and support
their operation.

You should have no problem doing this using the tandem of WE7 and iTunes8.
i have done exactly this for a couple of iTunes only podcasts marking
episodes I wanted and then have them retrieved.
If the podcast can be subscribed with a general podcast program such as
Juice, you also have this option.

I don't have time today to check out the specific feed you mention, but I
will place it on the to-do list for early in the week.

This is one of the great things about podcast subscriptions. You can not
only receive the latest installments automatically, but also many
subscriptions store a good amount of backlogged material for later
retrieval on a request basis.

Best of both worlds: get things automatically retrieved plus manual
retrieving later.

I both schedule to record and retrieve via podcast far more than I could
ever listen to.
I don't view this as a problem as it opens up the opportunity to listen to
something when and if I want to.
Replay AV, Juice, and iTunes all can be configured to automatically delete
items on a regular basis so this eliminates clutter.
And I do the collecting on an external hd so my main drive is kept neater.
With all this potential audio, I feel like the proverbial kid in the candy
store.

What I am finding now, thanks to all this audio, is that I do less and
less book reading.

2008-09-27 Thread Pam Drake
Good thoughts, Mike. I still want a little more control, especially
when there's the possibility I may already have heard whatever the
presentation might be live. I have enough trouble remembering to visit
mailboxes into which I have filtered mail, and if things are too
automatic I may forget. In other words, organization is not my strong
suit. smile

So is there no way to collect items on demand from Itunes? Especially
with a certain program, WMKV Computer Talk from WMKV in Cincinnati, I
try to catch it live and phone in when I can. I can record the repeat
broadcasts with Replay A/V if I want, but a number of months worth of
presentations have been uploaded to the Itunes store and are available
free. I might want to pick and choose, grabbing only those I haven't
heard.

It seems there was a program called Golden Ears which allowed podcasts
to be downloaded on demand and listened to immediately. It was an
option, not the whole premise of the program. I was hoping there'd be
some flexibility with Itunes.

Just my thoughts.

Actually, I don't necessarily want every show; and the last time I
subscribed to podcasts I didn't keep up. I got inundated! Of course I
think I was probably less sophisticated then as to what I wanted to
keep; but I am already doing so much recording of audio streams I'm
either not awake to hear or don't have the time to listen to in real
time that I hesitate to schedule things and risk winding up with another
driveful. smile

I want to record some of the presentations from ACB Radio
Mainstream on my hard drive for future listening. It's my
understanding
that a .m3u connection only plays from the original on-line source.
Am
I correct in this? Must I use an audio recorder such as Replay A/V or
Total Recorder to permanently record these presentations?
Thanks. I feel I ought to know this, but am not quite sure.

It seems to me that you should be able to record any streaming audio
with any recorder. You can download the MP3 files directly by going to
ftp://acbradio.org, then click on acbradio-archives, then click on mainmenu.
Identify the MP3 files you want then copy and paste them into a folder on
your computer.
Now figuring out what MP3 files to download involves some work. Go to
www.acbradio.org, click on On Demand, click on Main Menu and Main Menu
Live,. Identify the show you want. Right click on the date and choose to
Download Target As. Open that file in notepad and it will tell you what
files to download for that particular show.
I don't know why it has to be so difficult.
