Re: satellite radio

I bought a mifi for XM on Ebay for some ridiculous price, like $59 I think.
The mifi is not made anymore, so you still might find some really great
deals on Ebay.

If you're in to rock and metal maybe XM would be a better choice. Sirius
also has rock channels, but Sirius is more repetitive. XM has the Delphi
MyFi, and I'm not sure how available it is, but all the buttons are
 tactile,
and you just press in the channel number. You can plug headphones into it,
and the battery will last about 4 hours if I'm not mistaken. It also has a
home and car docking kit. I'm sure Sirius has portable receivers too, I
 just
don't know what they are. I have the Audoivox SIR3, I think it is, which
 has
a home kit and can be plugged into a boom box, but it can't operate on its
 own.

 Hi all,
Sorry if this is too far off.
I'm thinking about purchasing some sort of satelite radio, and I'm
wondering if anyone can recommend a device that fits the following:
Portable, so I can plug headphones in and use it like a standard radio.
Channel selection needs to be accessible. (not through a menu or touch
 screen)

 Under $200 US
I really don't know which out of XM and Sirius is better for me, I'd
mostly be listening to rock and metal music, so if one has a better
selection of that type of music I'd go for that over the other.

 Any suggestions are appreciated.
 Thanks
 Brandon

Re: satellite radio

2007-11-29 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High List Members,
I have to make this quick because my bus is on the way to pick me up for
work.
But however, I too have a question about satellite radio.
I'm wanting to get an XM receiver that's made primarily for home use.
Someone at XM suggested to me the Polk Audio receiver.
From what I'm told, it has an on screen display.
But it has to be hooked up to your TV set in order to see the on screen
menus.
I am also told that it comes with a remote control.
Does anyone know anything about these kind of receivers?
If so, how is one of these receivers setup or modified to be user friendly
for a blind person?
Thanks in advance.
  John.

Re: Satellite Radio

2005-11-08 Thread Brent Harding
I'm thinking of switching to Sirius, but I have until March, I believe,
until my XM I prepaid for last year expires. I like the idea of the new
shows like daily source code and the other budding new guys, interesting to
see if they make it. It would be nice to hear stuff like Tom Martino or
Handel on the Law. I know that Sirius has CourtTV and the discovery channel,
neither of which XM has. I think XM may do better in the music department,
don't think O and A are as big a hit as one thought, they seem kind of
boring, maybe Stern's a little better.

I have them both. I have a device from Sirius and the XMPCR from XM, and
 am
spoiled with that because I can read all the XM text. I started with XM,
 but
got Sirius for the college sports after Real Player was dropped by
 College
Sports TV. I have dropped the Real Player college sports stuff, infact I
dropped all the Real player stuff, wasn't using it. I found the Sirius
quality the best until a few days ago. It seems that the XM quality audio
wise has improved. If I could only afford one, I would stick with XM
 because
of their wider choice of music. XM now has the NHL and will be the
 exclusive
distributor of the NHL in 2007.Both have their strong points but if I
 could
only have one I would have XM.

Depends also where you live. For example, I live in the DC area. I
had Sirius for about a year because they seem to have better
programing, however their repeater system wasn't as extensive down
here as XM's, so I switched to XM because I didn't have an
unobstructed view of the sky and needed the repeater system. Sirius
does carry more sports like the NBA and NFL and more college football
than XM. XM does carry some college football but not as much as
Sirius. Sirius also has a few more talk and other channels like
Courttv Radio, only I don't off hand remember what they are. On the
other hand, XM does carry baseball, and this is just my opinion, but
their channel lineup does seem to be better organized. XM used to be
cheaper than Sirius, but it isn't any more. I think it depends on
what part of the country you live in. If you were a sports fan or a
talk radio fan then you should go with Sirius, unless you live in the
DC area or realy want the baseball.

When you hear that beep it usually means that a message is flashing

get someone to read the display when you hear the beep and I'll look it up.

Hi. If you really are leaning toward Sirius,
wait for the S50 to be
 released sometime soon.
Not sure of the accessibility of the thing, but
  the word is that it's
supposed to allow you to record up to 50 hours
  of content. To
   me, XM radio
is a much better service, but it's all in what
  you want.
If you like Major League Baseball, Opie and
  Anthony and a wide
   selection of
music and talk, xm is your service. If you like
the NFL and more of the
popular tunes, and Howard Stern coming in
  January, then you want Sirius.

slight correction, was Re: Satellite Radio

2005-11-08 Thread Chris Skarstad
 Hi
Just a slight correction. Sirius is spelled
s,i,r,i,u,s.
It's named after the star in the sky, also known as the dog star.
The company logo is a little dog.
So it's not serious, as in this is totally serious, but Sirius as in the star.

Hi The message that is flashing is telling that trafic
reports for pixburg and detroit are les than 4 minutes
away or something to that affect. When this happens I
can not do anything with the remote except turn it of
and back on again and so I have to wait it out for a
few seconds and all is well again.

If you could figure oout how to turn this off that
would be a big hlp.

Re: Satellite Radio

2005-11-07 Thread Paul Oeser
If you want everything you mentioned you'd better buy both
services. Sirrius has the NFL and some college football with the
south eastern conference. XM has MLB plus big 10, acc and pac 10 in
college football. Both have the NHL untill 2007 when it becomes
exclusive to xm.

XM now has exclusive rights to Air America Radio while both carry the
Ed Schultz show. Both services have the Dave Ramsey show. I'm not
sure who has the exclusive rights to what show in conservative talk.

Hi. If you really are leaning toward Sirius, wait for the S50 to be
   released sometime soon.
Not sure of the accessibility of the thing, but the word is that
 it's
supposed to allow you to record up to 50 hours of content. To
 me, XM radio
is a much better service, but it's all in what you want.
If you like Major League Baseball, Opie and Anthony and a wide
 selection of
music and talk, xm is your service. If you like the NFL and more
 of the
popular tunes, and Howard Stern coming in January, then you want
 Sirius.

Hi Chuck,

What is the XMPCR?

I bought the MyFi a month ago and adore it, but do wish I could access the
menus.

I have them both. I have a device from Sirius and the XMPCR from XM, and am
spoiled with that because I can read all the XM text. I started with XM,
 but
got Sirius for the college sports after Real Player was dropped by College

Re: satellite radio

2005-03-10 Thread Mike Mote
I just bought the Delphi Miphi, and it's very cool. It is a little pricy,
but when you consider all you get for the price, it's well worth the
investment. You have to buy so much extra, and this includes everything you
would ever need, and I mean everything. So far, it is user friendly as
well. I own both an XM and a sirius, and I like both for different reason.
But as far as signal goes, you can pick it up no matter where you live in
the lower 48.

This is a very good article. I'm interested in getting the myfi system
and not listen online, however I still think its a good article and i do
have someone sighted who can help me with things, but what I want to know,
has this article been shown to xm or that other one?
Myself would subscribe to xm, but everyone has their preferences.
I live in the Eastern part of the u.s in Pensylvania. Would i be able to
pick up the signals well with with my myfi receiver?
thanks

Subject: Satellite radio receivers

Hi, everyone!

I just got my Sirius receiver today and
listened to the preview channel. I got
the home kit and receiver. It's a
little bulkier and heavier than the XM
radio, and the buttons on the remote and
receiver are laid out differently. I'm
going to go ahead and activate tomorrow
and I won't have to do that on moving
day. All home receivers flash the i d
number, so you have to have sighted help
to read it off to you. I did not go for
the computer version of the receiver
because I do not have enough u s b
ports; I only have two of them; one is
being used by the scanner and the other
by the XM pcr. The Sirius receiver has
a regular power cord with three-prong
plug where XM has that bulky, heavy
adapote plug. The one for the boombox
is heavier than the one for the home
adapter kit. All those box adapters
make it combersome on a power strip.

I'm anxious to check out their oldtime
radio, folk channel and other music and
talk choices. Who knows? I might find
some programs I like a lot there, too.

I'm keeping my XM. It's still my top
choice.

Mimi
