Re: PC and Recording

2005-07-17 Thread Susan Wojtecki

Tim,
Make sure you have the What you Hear option checked in your volume control
under recording properties. You can only have one item checked at a time
under recording and if you have mic checked it will either pick up your
soundcard alone or everything including your soundcard, which you obviously
do not want. Please note that what is called What You hear applies to the
soundblaster cards. if you have a different soundcard i think it is called
Stereo Mixer or something like that, but it is the last of the recording
options before it cycles back to the beginning so you'll know when you get
there. i hope this solves the problem for you, since otherwise i'm out of
ideas.

Thanks to Susan and others, I now have TR and winamp co-existing as long
as

I start my stream in winamp before I launch TR. I've also followed all of
Susan's recommended settings below (as far as I can tell).

The problem is the only thing TR is capturing/recording is Eloquence when
I

press Record and Stop.

I can stream and run Eloquence together no problem. I just can't record
them

together with TR. Note, I'm not interested in Eloquence. I'm just pressing
Record before the program I want begins and then leaving the computer
alone.
I know I can also schedule the recording and then leave the PC alone
and/or

unload JAWS.

It seems like I'm missing something that should be obvious, but I humbly
welcome any help - obvious or otherwise.

I'm running TR 5.2 Standard, JAWS 6.2, on a new PC with XP pro.

Subject: Re: PC and Recording

   Jim,
In case you are using Windows 98, here are some thoughts on what you may
need to do to get TRworking optimally.

First, I know of no way to use TR with software speech on an older OS,
though for me it works fine with XP without Eloquence sounds bleeding
through or causing conflicts. Another difference i found between 98 and
XP

is that in 98 i always had to have Total Recorder up and running before
accessing the stream. There seems to be a conflict with the Total
Recorder

driver used for recording streams and Winamp, possibly the other audio
players as well. if this is true you will get an error message that
another

driver is accessing your sound card or something like that. The best
workaround for me involved switching to the Direct Sound under output
plugins in Winamp. The Wavout plugin is the default but it does not
always
coexist peacefully with the TR driver. in order to record, your sound
card

or mixer settings need to go through total recorder and for Winamp to work
you must be sure that it is going through your sound card and not the
Microsoft sound mapper. When switching between chat clients such as
Ivocalize and Winamp or Total Recorder, I found it necessary to check
these

settings every time and i couldn't always tell whether ivocalize or Total
Recorder was the culprit. Also, your recording parameters should be set
as

follows;
first, go into the record source parameters dialog, and

make sure the radio button for software is checked, which it should be by
default, then, if you want to convert on the fly, check the check box that
says convert using specified parameters below, and then pressthe change
button, and pick mpeg3 from the 13 or so formats in the combo box, and I
choose 44,100 128 bit rate, and then after you get the settings the way
you

want, you can press apply and okay. Then, go into

options from the file menu, by right arrowing, and then pressing enter,
and

enter again on the settings dialog, and you should be in the system tab,
which should be one of 12, and first, tab to the two radio buttons, and
then

select the bottom of the two, telling total recorder only to run its'
driver

when the program runs. Then, check both the check boxes that say use
directly, press okay, and apply, and everything should be set up. Then,
tab

to the mp3 tab, and in there, you have to press the button to tell total
recorder where to look for the lame encoder, which should be in c:\program
files\lame and press open, and I think the .dll is the bottom file before
you press the open button. Then you should have total recorder set up,
just

choose stereo from the radio buttons in that tab, and everything should be

Re: PC and Recording

2005-07-13 Thread Dean Martineau
Hi. Either stereo or mono mix should let you capture streaming
audio. Also, you may have more options than you know. In the volume
control, hit alt-p, then select properties. Tab to the list of choices and
choose recording. Tab again and there will probably be a list of sound
sources which can appear in the recording dialog box. Not all of them will
be checked. You might see if Wave is there and ensure that it is
checked. Once you hit enter and therefore enter the recording volume
control, any of the sounds which you have checked will become available for
you to choose and to set the volume. To record using Goldwave, unless you
want to capture the microphone as well as the sound coming from the net,
you really only want wave output.

Hope this makes sense.

Greetings all,

I am hoping some people on this list can help me out with a project. I've
posted a similar question to the group before with minimal results.
I am aware of recording programs for the PC.  Well, I know they exist;
although, I haven't had much success using one. I am also aware of the fact
that one can record what are known as netstreams, where you can set the
program to record from a radio station on the net or something like that.

I'm wondering if anyone has recorded stuff from the web using these
programs, and what they recommend.

For example, next Monday, at 6:00 central, I would like to record a program
off of a radio station from the midwest that is broadcasted on the internet.

I currently have Total Recorder, but I've not been able to get it to work
correctly. So, if people know about recording programs one can use to do
these things, let me know.

Thanks.

Re: PC and Recording

2005-07-13 Thread Susan Wojtecki

   Jim,
In case you are using Windows 98, here are some thoughts on what you may
need to do to get TRworking optimally.

First, I know of no way to use TR with software speech on an older OS,
though for me it works fine with XP without Eloquence sounds bleeding
through or causing conflicts. Another difference i found between 98 and XP
is that in 98 i always had to have Total Recorder up and running before
accessing the stream. There seems to be a conflict with the Total Recorder
driver used for recording streams and Winamp, possibly the other audio
players as well. if this is true you will get an error message that another
driver is accessing your sound card or something like that. The best
workaround for me involved switching to the Direct Sound under output
plugins in Winamp. The Wavout plugin is the default but it does not always
coexist peacefully with the TR driver. in order to record, your sound card
or mixer settings need to go through total recorder and for Winamp to work
you must be sure that it is going through your sound card and not the
Microsoft sound mapper. When switching between chat clients such as
Ivocalize and Winamp or Total Recorder, I found it necessary to check these
settings every time and i couldn't always tell whether ivocalize or Total
Recorder was the culprit. Also, your recording parameters should be set as
follows;

first, go into the record source parameters dialog, and

make sure the radio button for software is checked, which it should be by
default, then, if you want to convert on the fly, check the check box that
says convert using specified parameters below, and then pressthe change
button, and pick mpeg3 from the 13 or so formats in the combo box, and I
choose 44,100 128 bit rate, and then after you get the settings the way you
want, you can press apply and okay. Then, go into

options from the file menu, by right arrowing, and then pressing enter, and
enter again on the settings dialog, and you should be in the system tab,
which should be one of 12, and first, tab to the two radio buttons, and then
select the bottom of the two, telling total recorder only to run its' driver
when the program runs. Then, check both the check boxes that say use
directly, press okay, and apply, and everything should be set up. Then, tab
to the mp3 tab, and in there, you have to press the button to tell total
recorder where to look for the lame encoder, which should be in c:\program
files\lame and press open, and I think the .dll is the bottom file before
you press the open button. Then you should have total recorder set up, just
choose stereo from the radio buttons in that tab, and everything should be
fine hope this helps. i don't have the Pro version installed so hopefully
someone else can walk you through the scheduling.

OK. Thanks. Are there any other things I need to switch or do to get it to
record?

Well, I'm not sure on settings and stuff because you can either record
from two possible settings.

I guess I need to know the best settings to have TR on. When I tried
recording from a radio station, it didn't record. Also, I tried using
the timer, and it didn't do anything.

Jim,
What kinds of problems have you had with total Recorder? I had some
problems on and off when using it with Windows 98 but with XP it works
much better. Let me know what the problem is and your settings
configuration and i'll try to help, or maybe one of the real techies can
have a crack at it. Also, what soundcard and OS and which audio player?
There might be other programs that would work better, but sounds like TR
might be worth a try since you already have it installed.

Greetings all,

I am hoping some people on this list can help me out with a project.
I've posted a similar question to the group before with minimal results.
I am aware of recording programs for the PC.  Well, I know they exist;
although, I haven't had much success using one. I am also aware of the
fact that one can record what are known as netstreams, where you can set
the program to record from a radio station on the net or something like
that.

I'm wondering if anyone has recorded stuff from the web using these
programs, and what they recommend.

For example, next Monday, at 6:00 central, I would like to record a
program off of a radio station from the midwest that is broadcasted on
the internet.

I currently have Total Recorder, but I've not been able to get it to
work correctly. So, if people know about recording programs one can use
to do these things, let me know.

Thanks.
