You can configure the wave out plugin to alt volume monipulation it's slow,
but will change the volume.

Hello Joe and list: I also have been consulting another list! After
looking around, I finally found where to switch from Direct Sound to
wave output (and vise versa) no soap! If I switch to Wave output
(which actually did resolve the problem) but then if I turn Winamp down,
I turn everything down, which I don't want! So I had to switch back over
to direct sound! As for unloading Jaws as you suggested, again no
soap! When Jaws is unloaded, there seems to be no way to use the arrow
keys or anything else! Since Winamp is my default player, I've not tried
Windows Media; I'm not even sure that you can fast-forward through a file
with Windows Media anymore (I do know that you cannot go back) I also
know that you cannot go directly to a certain spot in a file with Windows
Media like you can with Winamp; these are reasons why I prefer Winamp
over what few audio MP3 players I have used! I do appreciate all of your
efforts to try and help! Hopefully (one way or another) I'll get this
resolved and will report back to you if and when I do!

You could try an alternative output pluggin.
go to prefferences control-p, press letter P till you hear plug ins,
press O till you hear output, then tab to the list, there is a
waveout, and a direct sound.

Select the plugin that is diffedrent to the current one, tab to close

don't know how you fast forward in WMP though.

Always use direct sound output, you can't go wrong, unless your
recording program needs to use it at the same time Winamp is using
it. In that case, one of the programs is gonna win. That's when you
need to use wave output when running Winamp, at least temporarily.
The volume control is in deed much more responsive when using direct
sound output.

Re: Still Looking For Help With Winamp

2012-07-05 Thread Joe Paton

Hi Tom,

I am not fully convercent with all the symptoms of your problem.

However, the screen reader's volume should be independent of the winamp volume.
I think the screen reader actually directly adjusts the audio device,
where the winamp volume adjusts actual output from winamp.

I could be wrong, I often am.

you need to start from somewhere as they say, so remove winamp.

Then go to the program files directory, and remove the winamp
directory if it is still their.

to be completely thorough, you could also remove the directory in
documents and settings, users user applicationdata there's a winamp
sub directory their which holds user settings, and I doubt if the
audio side is controled from here anyway but be completely sure,
remove this directory as well.

re-install winamp, remembering to accepth the clasic theme on the
visualisations side of things.

If you haven't got an recent winamp let me know and I'll send you a link.

If after re-install, then the problem shouldn't be winamp, but a
shared component.
So then you might want to re-install your sound card drivers, not
always easy, but can be done.

I suggested that you try another player to try and narrow down the
sources of your problem. Not conclusive, but a pointer.

Good luck.

2012-07-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have access to my Windows machine where I have Winamp installed,
but I think you have to be using the right output device in Winamp to
have the volume of Winamp be separate from your screen reader volume.
Try a different output device in Winamp to see what happens. I'm not
sure what the original problem was though, since I don't see the full
thread below.

On 05/07/12 11:20, Joe Paton wrote:
 Hi Tom,

I am not fully convercent with all the symptoms of your problem.

However, the screen reader's volume should be independent of the winamp
 volume.
I think the screen reader actually directly adjusts the audio device,
where the winamp volume adjusts actual output from winamp.
I could be wrong, I often am.

you need to start from somewhere as they say, so remove winamp.

Then go to the program files directory, and remove the winamp directory
 if it is still their.

to be completely thorough, you could also remove the directory in
documents and settings, users user applicationdata there's a winamp sub
directory their which holds user settings, and I doubt if the audio side
is controled from here anyway but be completely sure, remove this
 directory as well.

re-install winamp, remembering to accepth the clasic theme on the
 visualisations side of things.

If you haven't got an recent winamp let me know and I'll send you a link.

If after re-install, then the problem shouldn't be winamp, but a shared
 component.
So then you might want to re-install your sound card drivers, not always
 easy, but can be done.

I suggested that you try another player to try and narrow down the
sources of your problem. Not conclusive, but a pointer.

 Good luck.

Still Looking For Help With Winamp

2012-07-04 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: I assume that not many people saw my original post, concerning a
problem I'm having with Winamp since I re-installed it over the weekend! So I
shall repost it again in hopes that someone can tell me how to fix this: if I'm
listening to a file in Winamp; then I want to skip ahead, using the arrow keys,
I get a horrible noise that I cannot get rid of..except if I restart the
computer! Even shutting Winamp down won't stop it! Also, I notice that if I
have Winamp playing at low volume, I'm hearing some white noise; it's like a
hissing sound! Hopefully somebody can tell me what to do; I think it's
something maybe in preferences that needs to be either checked or unchecked;
whichever the case, I very much would like to be able to get this resolved!
And I'm sure there are many on this list who use Winamp as their player of
choice, so please feel free to jump in there and let me know what I need to do?

go to prefferences control-p, press letter P till you hear plug ins,

Select the plugin that is diffedrent to the current one, tab to close

2012-07-04 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hey Joe and list: Thanks for responding; may give this a try! Just to
clarify something: the actual sound isn't so bad; it's just that, if
something is playing at low volume; let's say I want to listen to a stream
that doesn't play at a high volume, I'll get that static (or hiss) or
whatever! For those who don't know, in Winamp, to advance through the file,
you can hit either the left or right arrow key (I know it works this way
with Jaws) may be something different with other screen readers; anyhow, one
can also hold that arrow key down to advance through the file quicker; it is
here that gets me into trouble as I get that bad sound! But will try Joe's
suggestion (unless I get one that may be better) and see if this clears up
the problem (I've had this happen a long time ago) but don't remember how it
was resolved!

Arthur and list: Is the library still accessible with 5.6? I ask because,
I seem to recall hearing that there was one version of Winamp that came out
where you couldn't do much with the library as far as the screen reader (in

Hey Joe and list: Thanks for responding; may give this a try! Just to
clarify something: the actual sound isn't so bad; it's just that, if
something is playing at low volume; let's say I want to listen to a
stream that doesn't play at a high volume, I'll get that static (or hiss)
or whatever! For those who don't know, in Winamp, to advance through the
file, you can hit either the left or right arrow key (I know it works
this way with Jaws) may be something different with other screen readers;
anyhow, one can also hold that arrow key down to advance through the file
quicker; it is here that gets me into trouble as I get that bad sound!
But will try Joe's suggestion (unless I get one that may be better) and
see if this clears up the problem (I've had this happen a long time ago)
but don't remember how it was resolved!

tom,

You could try an alternative output pluggin.
go to prefferences control-p, press letter P till you hear plug ins,
press O till you hear output, then tab to the list, there is a waveout,
and a direct sound.

Select the plugin that is diffedrent to the current one, tab to close
accepting the default settings.

see houw your audio sounds after this change.

Then maybe try playing the same file in, for example, windows media.

don't know how you fast forward in WMP though.

good luck,

Joe

My experience with the library, over multiple generations of Winamp, is
that the library is accessible for the local media and things like
managing your podcasts. It isn't accessible when it comes to managing
other remote content, such as radio feeds and the like.
