Hi Andrew,

There was a very extensive review of Kurzweil (Version 7 I think) on Main

trouble in finding the file, I'll give you an exact link to it later.

Re: converting text to audio

2005-05-21 Thread Larry Higgins

Yardbird,

First of all, I think I accidently addressed my previous message on this
issue to you rather than Scott, who originally posted the enquiry
concerning this matter. Anyway, what I wanted to say regarding the facility
for converting text files to mp3 within Openbook is this. Openbooks option
has two major flaws. The first is that the rendering of the audio is a bit
uneven, in that it tends to pause at inappropriate intervals, as well as
introducing annoying pops and such. Another problem is that you are stuck
with only one setting for both bit rate, as well as sampling rate. This
really makes a difference in that if you record your text at 128/44100khz
stereo rather than at say 32KBPs/22.05khz mono, fast forwarding and
rewinding take quite a bit longer. This lower setting doesn't cause any
noticeable deterioration sound quality, at least not on the Victor Reader
Classic. Not to mention you can cram more books and docs onto a single
disc.

believe the person asked only about converting files to .mp3, if I'm not
mistaken, to be played on players that use such files. I don't own a Victor

Yardbird,

I really wasn't so much singing the praises of the Victor, but I will if
it's called for.I figure however, that most people who wan to go to the
trouble to convert text files to an audio format aren't likely to listen to
them on a computer that also has a screen reader. They are most likely
concerned with both the quality of the output, as well as the number of
books and such that can be ported around on one cd, rather than having to
carry around many. That's the reason I mentioned in particular the Victor
Reader, although I'm sure that any mp3 player, especially with bookmarking
or recall capability would suffice

Hi,
I appreciate your testomonial for CDs played in the Victor rReader, but I
believe the person asked only about converting files to .mp3, if I'm not
mistaken, to be played on players that use such files. I don't own a Victor
Reader nor do I plan to budget for one, because so much of what I want is
available in ways that are dufficient for my needs. But in any case, it's
nice to know about your method.

Yardbird,

I recently tried and purchased TextAloud, and just love it. I like to copy
files to a cdrw, and listen to them on my Victor Reader Classic. It's
really one of the best buys I've made in a while. The rendering is only as
good as my error correcting job after scanning a document or book with
Openbook. Give it a try, and I think you'll be hooked on this one.

You could try TextAloud to convert text into WAV or MP3 files. You can
download it on a try and buy basis and it's inexpensive if you decide to go
for it.

  Hi everybody,

I'm new to this topic, so I hope I ask the correct questions.

Basically, what I am looking for is an accessible and effective way to
convert text or MS Word files into mp3 or wav. I use Open Book
  currently,
but I imagine there is something out there which would more adequately
meet
  my needs.

  Any ideas?
  Scott
