RE: problems with winamp and windows media player
I have XP, which may be similar to XP Home in this way. If you go to the control panel, then file options, you will be able to associate file types with the application of your choice. The application you select becomes the default for those file types. If XP Home looks like this but you still have difficulty following, please post again. I, or someone else if they answer first, can list the steps. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of John Melia Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2010 9:32 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: problems with winamp and windows media player I have both winamp and windows media player and I want winamp to be come my default player but I keep coming up with windows media player I know where the options are but can't uncheck the boxes. hi. this is a really long URL, so you may need to copy and paste it into your browser. but you can get it at: http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/98ef02c36021bdacf5c689d53b2f53756638e4e59524bb4477185870d90061d1/ I would really recommend the use of Winamp 5.33 though, because of all the bugfixes in that release, and at least, on my system here, version 5.33 runs a lot nicer. It's more stable and hasn't crashed once. I've had absolutely no problems with it to speak of. But the above url is the direct link to download Winamp 5.24 full. Re: problems with winamp
Hi. I think we're confusing concepts here folks. >If it were buffer overrun, why would it do it on this version and not a >previous one? There is a huge difference between a buffer overrun, and a buffering internet stream. A buffer overrun is when a program gains system access through code that is written to do that, but that's getting off topic. A buffering internet stream is when a stream starts and stops and it skips like crazy. There are ways of fixing this, even in the 5.33 version that was just released on the Thirteenth of February. To do this: 1. go to preferences, control plus p. 2. in the tree view, press your home key and go to the top so that we're all at a central place to start. Now arrow down to the plugins section, and arrow down to the input section. 3. press your tab key a couple times and you'll get to a list of plugins, choose the Nullsoft MPEG audio decoder. 4. Tab to the configure button and press the space bar. 5. You are now in a multipage dialogue. press your right arrow on the tab control and go to the streaming tab. 6. you'll see an edit box when you press the tab key once more, it says, streaming data buffer edit, and it'll be set at 64. You shouldn't need to change this, but if a station is giving you lots of trouble, you can change this to 128. 7. you'll then see 2 different sliders which determine how much Winamp buffers before the start of a stream. Back in the days of dialup access, it was recommended that you put both of these to 100%, but if you have a high speed connection you shouldn't need to do that. So what I would do is raise both of them just a little bit and experiment. choose a higher setting and see if it still buffers streams. and try several out as well, it may just be that one particular stream acting up, I've seen it happen and it's even happened to me when i was streaming something. So experiment a bit. So after you do all that, press the ok button, and then close the preferences and you should be all set. It could be a bug. Two broadcasters have told me that they find version 5.24 the most stable... You can find it at oldversions or someone may have it. I also have problems playing some radio stations in the newer versions of Winamp; they keep forever buffering while in 5.2x versions they play alright; also when there are titles available the 5.3x don't show them while the 5.2x do; so I solved it for now by installing the older 5.2x into a different folder so I can choose now between the two Winamps; LOL! A few problems with Winamp beta
With the beta Winamp version 5.33, I did experience some problems with the library which I tend to rely on. I'm accustomed to control shifting into the library then tabbing twice to my list of bookmarks. With the beta, I found that I had to use the Jaws cursor to first click on bookmarks before I could tab over to access the list. I must admit though, that after finding that to be the case, I rolled back to 5.32, so I can't say that I experimented much. I'm curious as to whether anyone else had my experience?
