Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, I'm not sure the developers would want to add another control to the toolbars. As an alternative, how about: 1. on the playback speed slider, the arrow keys move in 10% increments, and page up and down move in 40% increments. 2. a shortcut key is added to open the dialog box which contains both the edit box and the slider, so you can type in whatever value you want. David. original message: thanks much I'll play with that ugly work around. Possibly a spin box or combo box to select those increments would be less ugly. Re: selecting with audacity
I could work with that Wouldn't mind seeing the page up and keys usable as seek keys if for example the audio you needed to grab was 76 minutes into a 3 hour file. - Original Message - From: David Bailes david_bai...@yahoo.co.uk To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Friday, April 10, 2009 06:58 Subject: Re: selecting with audacity Hi Ray, I'm not sure the developers would want to add another control to the toolbars. Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, If you need to move the cursor by a large time increment, like 70 minutes, it's easier to do this using the selection start spin box. It takes a little time to get the hang of, but it's a very useful control, as you can increment or decrement any digit in the time. For example to move forward by 70 mins, just increment the hours digit by one, and the tens of minutes digit by one. Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, Adjusting the jump. If you open the preferences dialog (ctrl+p), select Audio I/O in the tree view, you can then tab to the seek time when playing section which contains two edit boxes. The names of the two edit boxes are short time and long time, and the units are seconds. Unfortunately Jaws misreads the the names. Instead of short time it says Audio to buffer: (higher = more latency), and instead of long time, it says milliseconds. Playback speend increments and decrements. I presume that you're referring to the playback speed slider. Unfortunately there's no way to change size of the increments at the moment - I presume that you find them too big. What sort of size would be useful? With regard to an early problem you were having finding the spin boxes, I've only just realized that in Audacity 1.3.7 there's a problem with the focus after you've opened, saved, exported, or imported files. This causes some keystrokes such as ctrl + f6 not to work. A work round for this focus problem is to press alt + tab, then alt + tab again to bring you back to the Audactiy window. David. original message: did not see where to adjust those jumps. Also is there a way to change the percentages at which play speed increments and decrements? Re: selecting with audacity
I found the alt tab work around through trial and error. As far as speed variations, increments of 5 or 10 percent would be preferred. I saw the edit boxes you mention but was not sure what I was seeing so I'll have to take another look at those. - Original Message - From: David Bailes david_bai...@yahoo.co.uk To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, April 09, 2009 10:41 Subject: Re: selecting with audacity Hi Ray, Adjusting the jump. Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, I'll mention your suggestion about smaller increments to the Audacity developers - they're far too big at the moment. There is however a rather ugly work around for this. If you move to the playback speed slider, route the Jaws cursor to the pc cursor and double left click, then a dialog opens which has both an edit box and a slider. The text in the edit box isn't intially selected, so select or delete it, and then type in any number you like, such as 1.45. The focus problem, and Jaws not reading the correct names of the short and long increment edit boxes have already been fixed by the developers, so they will be fixed in the next release. Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, If you're using the start selection spin box for moving the cursor around, it's best to set the group of 2 radio buttons to length, rather than end. Yes, you can use [ and ] to mark the beginning and end of the audio during playback. During playback, you can jump/seek by short/long amounts, as described in the playback section of the guide, and this is useful for quickly moving to the audio you're interested in. Also as noted in the guide, you can adjust these short and long increments to whatever values you want. Re: selecting with audacity
Hi Ray, Assuming that you've turned off the option to select all if non sekected, as described in the guide, then one or more tracks and a time range have to be selected to select a portion of audio. When you first open audacity, the focus should be the track table, so to move to the spin boxes on the selection bar, press ctrl + f6 to move to the selection bar, and then tab through the controls on the selection bar to find the spin boxes. If you've still having a problem with this, could you confirm that you using version 1.3.7 of audacity, and let me know what screen reader you're using. Pressing ctrl + f6 should cycle you round the toolbars, track table, and selection bar - what is your screen reader reading back when you press ctrl + f6 a few times? It should be something like: length radio button, pause button, track view table, etc. David. original messages: do I understand that the track has to be selected before a portion of audio can be selected? unfortunately, I'm not seeing the spin boxes referenced in the documentation.
